Props to the guy who said "Ma'am you are too irational to deal with" and proceeded to ignore the customer, I think this should be a standard practice when a client is being far too difficult or causes a scene. Just ignore them, like you would a child throwing a tantrum, if they start breaking stuff, that's when you intervene and call for backup but if they are just yelling and hurling insults, ignore them altogether, they'll figure out they're being looked at and making a fool of themselves and promptly leave.
it doesn't hurt anyone but the person who is hurting themselves by throwing a tantrum and avoids unnecessary confrontation or violence. So the employee can avoid any repercusions from higher ups.

I worked at Dollar General for a short while. A woman in her 30s came to my register with an economy size 12 pack of toilet paper. I rang it up, she handed me a coupon, I scanned the coupon and the system rejected it because it was expired. I said sorry the coupon is expired. She went batshit. When she came up for air I told her the system wont allow me to apply the coupon . She went more batshit. My manager obviously heard this screeching banshee and came to see what was up. He also told her we couldn't honor the coupon. In her best "Karen" voice she demanded to talk to the manager. With a joyful smile on his face he told her he IS the manager. "Karen" threw around some choice words, then threw the 12 pack of toilet paper on the floor stomping out saying she'll never be back! Manager said good, we don't want you back! All this over 50 cents.

I work front line at a fast food place. Its only been a month and I've seen two tantrums that did NOT need to happen.
First guy, turns out he is a regular. He comes in once a week for our 4.99 after 4 dinners. I took his order, and in the middle of him ordering he starts incessantly bitching about our health score card. He says its to high up for him to read, and we needed to lower it so people could read it. It wasn't that high up at all. Like I'm short as shit and I could read it perfectly. He threatened to call the health department, which get this, he already did twice on our store, for that fucking same reason!!
The other was a guy who came through the drive thru ordered food for his family. Came in and while we were starting our clean up stuff cause we closed at 10 and it was 9, and started yelling as soon as his foot entered the store. Saying, "THESE PRICES ARE BULLSHIT! WHY THE FUCK DID I PAY ALMOST DOUBLE FOR A KIDS MEAL COMPARES TO THE NUMBER 7 THREE PIECE FINGER COMBO, AND GET ONE LESS FINGER! THIS IS BULLSHIT!!! WHY?" The prices are litteraly like 3 or 4 cents different, with the combo being more then the kids meal. The manager on shift threw three fingers in a box, and said "you can keep the others." And as he left he said he wouldn't be back.
There was no need for all that. Like no fucking need at all. You're grown. Stop acting like a fucking child over shit that doesn't matter.

I was with my grandma at Walmart and some old lady started yelling at my grandma because she had a dog with her in the food isle. She was saying how dogs aren't allowed, just in a fit of rage. The thing is dogs are actually allowed. Now, I would have understood her view if the dog was sniffing everything, tearing food to shreds etc. But the dog just walked beside her, sitting down patiently when my grandma looked at something. The dog had previously been training to be a service dog (to help people) but failed training because she missed us too much. The lady was screaming about how she's going to call (I'm not sure what, the pound? Animal control? I forgot, it was 3 years ago.) And the dog is just standing there, probably very uncomfortable and scared. My grandma showed her the card showing that the dog is trained but the lady continued her screaming fit. People were staring. Employees started trying to get her to leave and she did. not. Want. To. Leave. I wish I did something and stuck up for my grandma but I was a shocked 10 year old, not expecting anything like that. The funny thing is, right before we entered I made a remark about the strange people I hear about that go to Walmart, but did NOT expect to encounter somebody like that. After she was escorted out, a few women who argued with my grandma stopped for a few mins to talk to my grandma about how horrible that woman is, especially cuz my grandma had a child with her. It was a bit of a blur so hard to remember

This is Starbucks at 9am on a Monday morning so they were crazy, and the poor baristas were understaffed so the drinks were slow. I guess the type of cup she picked wasn’t included in the $2 cup deal they had posted, but she didn't realize it. She starts yelling and freaking out about how they charged her $3 instead of two. Pulls over two baristas trying to get them to team against the one who checked her out. Pulls over another woman about her age (mid 40s) talking about how ’they're adults and they understand how prices work’ super condescendingly.

But hothead #1(lets just call him boxer), was asked to cover a shift for me because i had to travel cross country to visit my grandmother at her funeral. He smiled and happily accepted when the manager asked. Then, when the manager left, proceeded to kick a rack full of dishes so hard they shattered against the wall and the rack went flying out of the dish room. He then went and got the rack and threw it on the floor by my feet and said in a calm deep tone “you’d better haul ass now”as we worked he continued to yell to himself in the dish room and punched our dish machine. It had a softball size dent in it afterwards. Hothead #2 slams things similarly but never actually hit anything but has abandoned his post multiple times leaving me to pick up the slack and close alone.

I worked at KFC. One night around 8pm when we started getting ready to close, a guy came in saying we forgot his fries. To be fair, we did. I bagged for him and had been asking myself if I gave him the fries or not. However, the drive through was very busy and that was our first priority.
He was sitting there the whole time just whining and complaining, calling us lazy and inconsiderate and all sorts of things. When we gave them his fries he said "I will never be coming back here" I said "Thank god" and he looked like his head was about to explode.

My nan was telling us a story about how she had met with her old friend, Dorothy who was in her 90's. They both worked together many years ago and lived a couple of hours apart. My nan would often visit her every year.
On this day, Dorothy had some other friends visiting so they all went to the beach together. Dorothy loved the beach, just sitting on a deck chair watching the waves. They hung out for a while until one of the friends said that she needed the toilet. They didn't know where the nearest toilets were so they all decided to go together to find them. Upon finding out that she had to leave the beach with them, Dorothy flipped her lid like a child refusing to leave a theme park. My nan had to put her foot down and tell her off like a disgruntled parent.

It should be no-contest, 100% legal for those working with the public to be equipped to fend off these miscreants, and mace these people in the face, or stun them with a stun gun, and go about their day after alerting security/police to come pick them up, especially if they want to get in the employee's face. I use to work in retail & I witnessed a grown ass adults have a temper tantrum at my work.
This one incident happened when I was working the closing shift: I had to shut the automatic doors just to let The remaining customers out & I had to tell everyone else that we closed early for the night. This was Christmas Day & we wanted to go home, & I had to deal with A Double whammy. Both a Karen & Daren (the male Karen) walked up to the door and asked if we were still open, I had to tell them that we were shutting down for the evening & I couldn’t let customers in to the store & they both asked if they could speak to a manager & I told them that our managers couldn’t do anything about this. They got offended & stormed off. I told the manager about this incident & The manager was like “ they literally had all day to come to the store”. Most of the people I had to tell that The store was closing for the night handled the situation with dignity & told me “Merry Christmas” & left. I got satisfaction for telling a customer that they were wrong. It was beautiful.

Here's a very British tantrum: my husband was working over the weekend on a rush job. At 3pm on Saturday the fire alarm on the building opposite went off. Hubby turned up the radio, carried on working until 6pm, then went home. He returned at 7am Sunday morning to find the alarm still ringing. At 8am, a man with a ladder arrived, ascended, and knocked the alarm off the wall with a lump hammer. Silence is golden.

Was working with my good buddy in a shipyard and we were in the engineers "office" (portable office placed on boat during its drydock time) asking questions about our job. While we're waiting for the eng. to look up blueprints, 2 other coworkers come in for questions on their job. (One was a 19yr old guy who was quiet but a hard worker, the other was this 40yr old guy who for some reason had it out for me, would interrupt conversations i was holding with other coworkers when he wasnt involved at all, etc.) The 19yr old takes a seat while we're with the eng. The 40yr old guy comes up to us and while im sitting there i look at him and to be funny, in a bad british accent i say "seats taken wait ya turn". He looks at me and kicks my hardhat that i had placed on the floor of the office. Hardhat bounces around in the seat cutout of a desk and its pretty damn loud. At this point all eyes are on him, i didnt say another word to him. He proceeds to walk around the eng. desks and plops his fat-ass in a seat and doesnt say another word. I was 21yrs old and this 40 something guy acted like an immature child. Only made himself look bad.

All of our customers were able to deal, until late that night when a grown man (in his 40's I would say) came in looking for Diet Coke. When I explained we were out he burst into tears. He stood there and cried like a baby, in public, because we were out of Diet Coke.

I worked at H&M years ago. Once I was on the register and a woman got so angry at me because she didn't like the penny I gave her. Her change was luterally a penny (it may have been some change and then a penny) but the penny wasn't shiny enough for her, she said this. She demanded I open the register again to give her a shinier penny. I told her that I can't unless a purchase is being made since I wasn't the manager. She began calling me N***** over and over very loudly and called for my manager. I looked over at security who was super far away, and tried to call for him but he couldn't hear me. I asked the woman calmly to calm down and said "that isn't nice." My manager came and she yelled at him about the penny also. He opened the register for me and gave her the newer penny and she continued to call us both N-word and then walked away. We both looked like "what the hell???"
Just to add. I am black, my manager Puerto Ricoan and the crazy woman was also black.
    She was clearly mentally ill.

My father and I used to get into all sorts of shenanigans, and I don't mean the types we look back on fondly.
Because he was a reporter, we had to live in an extended stay apt, more often than not, and when times were lean he got pissy and sometimes straight up violent.
He either would kick me out of the room or he wouldn't let me leave, he drove me to desperation and near madness during these times, for instance he and I got into a fight because he ate two packets of peanut butter crackers I'd saved up for from the lobby vending machine, he crushed them in his hand and threw the dust on me when I mentioned that I had bought those.
We got Into fistfights where I refused to hit Him because I knew exactly where TO hit him, if I had we'd have owed the hospital more money to repair that replacement hip of his.
He'd even lash out at others, he punched a desk receptionist and later he punched a kid who worked for the complex's owner.
Mind you he IS bipolar but it doesn't excuse what he did.

I work at a gas station. Few months ago we got orders from corporate offices that requires us to scan everybody's ID for age-restricted items no matter how old the customer appeared. This 50-something year old man comes in to buy some beer. When I asked for his ID, he started ranting about how he is too old to be asked for his ID. I tell him that corporate requires us to ID everyone no matter what. He finally relents and shows me his ID. But when I told him that I have to actually scan it into the system, he becomes downright belligerent and screams in my face about how it is an invasion of his privacy to scan his ID. Me being a smartass wanted to tell him that privacy hasn't existed since the Patriot Act. But I calmly tell him that I can't sell him the beer unless I scan his ID. He then storms out of the storm screaming every cuss word in the dictionary.

She wasn’t paying attention I guess, she just hummed and nodded. When I did that, she. Lost. Her. Mind. Started yelling and calling me stupid while I had to call a higher-up to reverse it and her kid getting quietly upset for the mom. One time me and my family went to red Robin and this guy at a nearby table was asking for a manager the entire time because he couldn't get his free birthday burger and the waitress was trying to explain to him that he had done something wrong and could no longer redeem the burger. Eventually he literally just got up and left, leaving his wife at the table to pay, but not after informing the waitress he would not be coming back. I hope they came in separate cars because the idea of this man going out and sulking in his car is too much for me lol. We made sure to give the waitress an extra tip because we know she didn't get one from that table and on the Ziosk survey I wrote that she was very professional in dealing with the situation at the nearby table and a wonderful server.

I swear I know that Whole Foods lady, or had one just like her when I worked in the bakery at a different store. We sold these breakfast rolls that had different fillings like raspberry, and orange, she liked the cinnamon ones, which were the most popular. She only ever came in at night, and the ones we had made that morning were usually gone. (we made them every day) She would throw a huge fit like a child if there weren't any left when she got there at 7 pm. I would tell her she could order them and we would make sure to have them on hand for her whenever she got there. She said no, she didn't want to have an obligation to have to pick them up if she decided she didn't want them. I told her she would just have to continue taking her chances then and gave her no sympathy or attention when she threw her fits. Eventually she stopped coming in at all. Maybe that's when she started going to Whole Foods lol

I had a really similar story happen to the third one. The grocery store I worked at during high school was being closed down, we wherent making a ton of money and the landlord on the strip thing the store was on was a total ass and wouldn’t negotiate rent. Corporate shut us down. There was a sister location in a town about an hour away that was doing a lot better, so we packed some things to be sold there at full price. I was one of their best and favorite employees, so they kept me around as long as they could (I loved that job and all the people there where fantastic, even if the work was shitty sometimes). Anyway, during the last two weeks I got yelled at numerous times for not selling the items being sent to the other store to people for full price, not giving items away for free, and not knowing the exact discount amount. Only certain items we had a lot of got discounted, but people where dumb and thought everything was super cheap so people bought 200-300 dollar carts all day. What people will do when they think they’re saving money. I hate people

    Gas station clerk here.
Regular customer comes up and sends her late teens early twenties daughter to the window to get cigarettes (this was before the age went to 21 of course)
Coworker running the register, she is relatively new so she hadn't met all our usual customers yet. She cards the daughter. Daughter has no ID. Sorry, no sale. She sees me and says I'll vouch for them. No I will not. Mother yells they're for her. Doesn't matter. She isn't at the window. She isn't unable to come to the window either, she does it often.
Coworker says sorry, no sale. Daughter gets back in the car and they peel out, circle about the gas station and the mother flings her empty cigarette boxes out onto the ground and leaves.
For years after the mother came to buy her brand of cigarettes then have a tantrum because we don't carry them and haven't for years nor do we control what we carry.
They both work here now. Well, the daughter does. I don't think the mother does anymore but I'll take oath she quit because she didn't get her way.
    I wonder if they remember?

I used to work at a big name hardware store..FYI it was (Hint Blue). Definitely saw some crazy situations. The following are my favorite stories.
I was in a unique customer service position... Where I had to float and find people who needed help... And cover any department when asked. One night while covering electric...Woman approaches me with what is clearly an old broken fan... I mean clearly very old. She approaches me and says she was told She could trade her old fan for a new one at no charge. Very politely I explained to her that her fan is a much older than that we no longer carry and also very politely let her know... That even if she had a receipt and we did still carry the particular fan... We couldn't replace it because it was very damaged. Fireworks literally went off in her eyesas she yelled at me telling me that the gentleman who was there earlier when she came to ask about a trade said that he was the manager so he could make the trade. (I forgot to say department manager.) Anyway, I told her that the department manager was on his dinner break right now... But I would be happy to let her speak to you the store manager that was on duty. The store manager on duty and I came back over to the woman...He gives her the same explanation and answer that I had already gave her. She just started screaming more. The manager on duty told me I could go help other customers that were patiently waiting and he would handle the current situation.
The manager on duty later told me that he gave her floor model fan at a very discounted price...Just to stop the screaming. (Side note when I went back into the employee break room...,I told the electrical department manager about the woman and the promises she claimed that he made to her. Turns out he actually did make that promise...He was gonna do it on the low...Mind pretty much blown...I tell him I paged him twice. He was in his car fing a co worker. (Both married.)
    This is short
Our competitor cells Disney wall decals... A guy literally... Threw something at me when I told him I'm sorry but we don't sell any kind of wall decal. He reported me... Said I referred to find him what he wanted. (Obviously after I explained the situation to the manager on duty... I didn't get in trouble.)

Embarrassingly, I've had adult temper tantrums before. Wish I never did that, but at least it wasn't in public and my husband is still with me. I haven't had a tantrum ever since because I was way too embarrassed afterwards and if I ever feel like I'm getting that mad again I just walk away to catch a breath and calm tf down lol
