    Doug, listening to your comment about if you block it you clean it reminded me of my time as a dive instructor in Egypt.
    The dive sites are marine parks so the paper is not flushed into the sea, it is put in a bin and then collected to be burnt. However with people spending a life time of putting the paper in the pan then the loos do get blocked from time to time.
    Included in the first day boat briefing is a reminder that the person who is in charge of cleaning the blocked loos is also the COOK lol
    This seemed to have a great effect on not putting paper down the pan...

Another point to check as you do regular maintenance on your head is that anti-siphon valve to make sure it has not had anything get into it to reduce or prevent its operation.

    I know you are going for simple, but I highly recommend a macerator pump... no one wants to worry about their dump clogging up the hose. Put macerators on every commode. Also, sucking in raw water to use in the head will make everything smell WAY more than the poop itself. That raw water sitting in the hoses has bacteria in it, and boy does that water stink if it sits in those hoses for an extended period. I suggest having a separate fresh water system to feed all the heads. Put valves on all of those toilet “intakes” to suck in raw water if that fresh water supply ever runs low. Once the crew understands how the valves work, they will all appreciate the non-stinky fresh water option for flushing! I’d also get one big pump that can easily lift the waste at the dock side into the pump out station, or just throw a valve and that same pump can powerfully empty that same tank below the waterline when offshore.

    • @manfredschmalbach9023

      It's a boat.
      Nothing, and that means NOTHING, comes in the bowl that wasn't gulped and digested before (besides wipepaper, we made that sole exception 'cause western landlubbers simply can not learn to put those in a bag ....)
      People signed that kinda manual on any vessel under my command on their first hour aboard, and we put up very steep fines for different sorts of failures caused by mistreating that rule.
      It worked well the moment we decided the whole crews had to pay those fines together, no matter usually only the female participants clogging the pumps on a regular basis with their bloody "sanitary products".

    Consider adding a bidet seat attachment (approximately $30) or handheld kitchen sprayer (bum gun) to each toilet instead of toilet paper. No worries about toilet paper clogging the system and save money from having to buy it. Bidets are the way to go!!

    It will be interesting to see how susceptible the barrels are to permeation. All the hoses and tanks ultimately end up with a smell. Also macerater pumps do have some lift capabilities but not much unless your buying high end ones. I have burned them out before. The good ones have rebuildable pump heads. Oh and what I have found that fills holding tanks faster that anything is those folks with table spoon sized bladders! And they use TP too! I like the simple pump toilets. Easiest to repair, unclog and replace if ya gotta. I have two electric ones now spent $375 on one for it’s pump (computerized nightmare!) Train the crew and stay simple.

    Rule is pump and dump as you go so the bowl stays empty of waste and full of water the jabsco can handle a lot just not all at once. I have a few stories from a life time of boating but best was on current boat my Sister in law a lovely lady used the head and it blocked not uncommon but trick on my system was usually to get up a bit of pressure by blocking the breather. anyway cork couldn't be found so I put my foot in plastic bag and stood on breather where it comes out on the deck and told her to just keep pumping she put her head through the hatch to tell me it was getting to hard just as I inadvertently lifted my foot she got the entire contents of the holding tank in the face in a microsecond.

    Pump style heads are great as poop will septic breakdown in the hoses . Get macerator style or short hoses but you will need at least 200 gallons storage if you are inshore and cant dump. Never rely on marinas daily. Six persons x four times a day x equals 24 gals per day and that is low as a real pooper uses much more. This is fifty years of Yacht and trawler building and Cruising with Family. Rethink capacities of tanks very closely . Ball valves every where on hand pump heads too. An open head below water or when you heel over will Yes Sink you ! Been there while racing sail Yachts and someone left the valve open , ME!

      There is often a thru-hull fitting with a valve on it. That may be closed or if your getting just a little water it might have a strainer on the valve that is clogged or the line is clogged. Or the flap valve in the pump might need replacing. Or the seal around the pump piston might need replacing. Dig in! And welcome to boats.

Also pulling wetter through the pipe puts negative pressure in the pipe same with a sifon but pushing it puts positive pressure in the pipe if the sifon stoppers work with a change of pressure of think that a different type would have to be used for the outlet and the inlet

    Wet the bowl before you do #2. If you don't you'll be rinsing the bowl for an hour or you'll be scrubbing by hand.

    Tell your guests it could be a lot more difficult. You could have
    installed a Zero- Gravity Toilet. Those things are incredibly complicated.
    Zero-Gravity Toilet instructions
    1. The toilet is of the standard zero-gravity type. Depending on requirements, System A and/or System B can be used, details of which are clearly marked in the toilet compartment. When operating System A, depress lever and a plastic dalkron eliminator will be dispensed through the slot immediately underneath. When you have fastened the adhesive lip, attach connection marked by the large "X" outlet hose. Twist the silver coloured ring one inch below the connection point until you feel it lock.
    2. The toilet is now ready for use. The Sonovac cleanser is activated by the small switch on the lip. When securing, twist the ring back to its initial-condition, so that the two orange line meet. Disconnect. Place the dalkron eliminator in the vacuum receptacle to the rear. Activate by pressing the blue button.
    3. The controls for System B are located on the opposite wall. The red release switch places the uroliminator into position; it can be adjusted manually up or down by pressing the blue manual release button. The opening is self adjusting. To secure after use, press the green button which simultaneously activates the evaporator and returns the uroliminator to its storage position.
    4.You may leave the lavatory if the green exit light is on over the door. If the red light is illuminated, one of the lavatory facilities is not properly secured. Press the "Stewardess" call button on the right of the door. She will secure all facilities from her controll panel outside. When gren exit light goes on you may open the door and leave. Please close the door behind you.
    5. To use the Sonoshower, first undress and place all your clothes in the clothes rack. Put on the velcro slippers located in the cabinet immediately below. Enter the shower. On the control panel to your upper right upon entering you will see a "Shower seal" button. Press to activate. A green light will then be illuminated immediately below. On the intensity knob select the desired setting. Now depress the Sonovac activation lever. Bathe normally.
    6. The Sonovac will automatically go off after three minutes unless you activate the "Manual off" over-ride switch by flipping it up. When you are ready to leave, press the blue "Shower seal" release button. The door will open and you may leave. Please remove the velcro slippers and place them in their container.
    7. If the red light above this panel is on, the toilet is in use. When the green light is illuminated you may enter. However, you must carefully follow all instructions when using the facilities duting coasting (Zero G) flight. Inside there are three facilities: (1) the Sonowasher, (2) the Sonoshower, (3) the toilet. All three are designed to be used under weightless conditions. Please observe the sequence of operations for each individual facility.
    8. Two modes for Sonowashing your face and hands are available, the "moist-towel" mode and the "Sonovac" ultrasonic cleaner mode. You may select either mode by moving the appropriate lever to the "Activate" position.
    9. If you choose the "moist-towel" mode, depress the indicated yellow button and withdraw item. When you have finished, discard the towel in the vacuum dispenser, holding the indicated lever in the "active" position until the green light goes on...showing that the rollers have passed the towel completely into the dispenser. If you desire an additional towel, press the yellow button and repeat the cycle.
    If you prefer the "Sonovac" ultrasonic cleaning mode, press the indicated blue button. When the twin panels open, pull forward by rings A & B. For cleaning the hands, use in this position. Set the timer to positions 10, 20, 30 or 40...indicative of the number of seconds required. The knob to the left, just below the blue light, has three settings, low, medium or high. For normal use, the medium setting is suggested.
    10. After these settings have been made, you can activate the device by switching to the "ON" position the clearly marked red switch. If during the washing operation, you wish to change the settings, place the "manual off" over-ride switch in the "OFF" position. you may now make the change and repeat the cycle.

    I just a bought a boat. The toilet is relatively new. The pump housing leaks when flushing.
    I think a gasket may have been improperly installed. Anyone have any experience with this? Anything I should be aware of in troubleshooting?

    I'm looking to buy a sailboat and the toilet is the only part of the sailboat that scares me lol. Fearful of sinking the boat. I've seen some sailors actually use a composting toilet on their boats. No need for water, just dispose of the composted crap every two weeks. What is your intake on that? Thank you for sharing such an informative video!

    • @SVSeeker
      @SVSeeker  9 месяцев назад

      I like the composting toilet, but they require crew that know how to use them and with the discipline to do it correctly every time. I have far too many short term guest for it to be practical on my boat.

    Personally, i would put a seacock in both lines, but place them so they can't 'normally' be operated, or lock them open, if you ever have to service the pipe (leak below waterline etc) you can shut them off to do the repair
    The alternative is to dive and insert a plug from the outside, assuming you're in warm enough water without sharks ;)

    I think I missed the episode where you went shopping for toilets! That Jabsco is absolutely the cheapest and the most in-efficient marine toilet known to man! It is really about $150 with your coupons etc. The next class of toilet is actually one of the best--The Raritan PH2--it is a hand pump also---but--it is light years ahead of the low priced spread---however---the price is over $400!! And I do recommend the vinegar--always buy at Costso---5 bucks for 2 gallons! I always give the females the"Talk"---about the care and feeding of the marine head. The boatyard dumpsters are always full of those Jabsco toilets, some of them real new! The Seeker is much better than this toilet!!??--------Mikey in Sequim

    An anti-siphon valve won't on the intake to the toilet because you're pulling a vacuum. So what kind of valve would you use? Or do you just have to pump hard enough to overcome the air leak?

    • @SVSeeker
      @SVSeeker  4 года назад

      I think you have the outbound confused with the inbound.

      @@SVSeeker You mentioned in the video using anti-siphon valves on both the water intake and the affluent output. Just wanted to know how that works on the intake of sea water?

    • @staasguujaaw6651
      @staasguujaaw6651 2 года назад +1

      @@kurtarmbrust you're correct.. on the intake side it wouldn't allow you to pull a suction. It goes between the toilet pump and the bowl, then another on the discharge line

  • @moya034
    @moya034 4 года назад +3

    Sounds like installing valves on the intake and discharge make sense for easier repairs and emergency, even if you plumb in the anti-siphons so the valves don't have to be regulary operated.

    • @nonplayercharacter6478
      @nonplayercharacter6478 4 года назад

      Yes, I thought that too. Valves or vents? Why not both? Sounds only prudent. Doug would probably say that you could make every system redundant at the cost of actually making a boat, and he's probably right. Although, I think that holes through the hull would deserve redundancy protections, if anything does. I've probably seen too many submarine movies, it's always the valves that save them. :)

    I installed ball valves on all through hull fittings because of the fear of anti siphon and check valves failing and sinking my boat while I’m not on it. I’ve seen a lot sink because of such a small thing that turns into a shitty one.
