CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Leonard (Robert De Niro) begins to show signs of getting worse.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on a true story as related by neurologist Oliver Sacks, Awakenings stars Robin Williams as the Sacks counterpart, here named Dr. Malcolm Sayer. Something of a klutz and naif, Dr. Sayer takes a job at a Bronx psychiatric hospital in 1969. Here he's put in charge of several seemingly catatonic patients who, under Sayer's painstaking guidance, begin responding to certain stimulati. Apprised of the efficacy of a new drug called L-DOPA in treating degenerative-disease victims, Sayer is given permission to test the drug on one of his patients: Leonard Lowe (Robert De Niro), who has not communicated with anyone since lapsing into catatonia as a child. Gradually, Lowe comes out of his shell, encouraging Sayers to administer L-DOPA to the other patients under his care. Julie Kavner and John Heard also star.

I think this is one of robin Williams’ best performances
iustitia30 Me too
Agreed
I agree
Totally agree with you. Robin performed an extraordinary role in this film. I'm glad that in the end of the movie, he surpassed his shyness to ask Eleanor for a cup of coffee.
How about Aladdin and Mrs Doubtfire those are some of his best roles as well
How the flying fook Deniro didn't win best actor at Oscars for this is beyond me. An absolutely incredible performance!!!
Yeah, De Niro performance suffering Encephalitis Lethargica is AWESOME. He deserved to win an Oscar for this. Also great acting of Williams. This touched me and it's one of the best movies that I've watched that doesn't fall with Adrenaline, Floods of action, Shooting and all of those. A must watch! 😉. Hugs for everyone!
He was nominated for his role in Cape Fear at the same time as best supporting actor.... /0\
Strong line up that year. Think Hopkins won
Jeremy Irons won this year for Reversal of Fortune. Anthony Hopkins was next year, same year De Niro was nominated for Cape Fear.
DeNiro - is a great actor. But, I can't tolerate that his politics. Does he have to be so rancid.
This scene, in particular Leonard's moving speech to Doctor Sacks about the emptiness of his life ("You have no excuse. You're just a scared and lonely man with nothing. No life. Nothing.") affected me deeply when I saw the movie. We all fail in some way to live fully engaged in a truly meaningful life. I left that theater that afternoon firmly committed to make some changes.
Amazing man.. how old are you now? U san the movie back in 1991?
+aman -- I saw that movie years after it first came out. I was at a community screening. Hey, my beard has definite gray streaks in it now.
@@rr7firefly nice to know man. Keep punching hard. Art is real.
That is what good cinema will do :)
For Mazzy -- Leonard has no choice with his condition. He has to live with it and its limitations. He essentially is asking Doctor Sacks "Why are you living such a limited life, when you have no physical restrictions like I do?" It's a hard-hitting question and it pertains to almost all of us actually. Because we often go through life letting our fears and uncertainties govern what we do (or do not let ourselves do). This is a classic condition, and yes, it comes from our social conditioning: our parents may have told us repeatedly that the world is a dangerous place or that we will fail if we try for something too difficult. Even friends get into that kind of talk. It's called peer pressure. Usually it keeps us in our place, at the same level as our social group. Leonard could just as well have said, "Oh man... if I wasn't stuck in this place with this horrible condition I'd be out in the world, doing great things. You, Doctor, are hiding from it all."
This is for those who claim that Deniro can't play other role as well as mafia boss
Some clueless trumptards do you mean
Nobody thinks this. Nobody who has seen Raging Bull, Brazil, The King of Comedy, Taxi Driver and countless other films will think this.
@@davekp6773
That's what I'm saying. De Niro considered one of the greatest actors ever 40 and more years. But many Trumptards ( they obviously doesn't have a clue about cinema) say that de Niro plays ONLY mob guys lol . But at least they are a very few people
I mean he did raging bull, taxi driver, cape fear and jackie brown and this
@@Gma00001 I may not like de Niro's arrogance, but for them to deny he's a talented actor is beyond me.
This movie always made me remember to enjoy the simple things in life
So sad when he said "the drugs not working." There's a very strong finality to that.
Prior to filming, the actors portraying patients studied films of Dr. Oliver Sacks' actual post-encephalitis patients, and Robert De Niro and Robin Williams spent time with Sacks in the hospital observing him and his patients
thats some quality acting there, from both :)
Based on a true account
A worthy opponent.
Two absolute class acts.
The way he says he fought for 30 years and he's still fighting hits hard
This words remind me my immortal Idol MUHAMMAD ALI , he fought Parkinson for almost 40 years 😑
This movie had me all in my feelings 😭😭😭 robin Williams is the best
How on earth did these 2 great actors not receive an Oscar for this outstanding performance.
Lack of marketing like many greats
@@jshdhdyjfjdjfhfyyene731Similar to Tim Robbins or Morgan Freeman in Shawshank Redemption
R.I.P. Robin, I still miss you😢
The fact that De Niro's character practically held an uprising in that room is hilarious.
What a great movie, done by two legendary actors. This film was said to be Williams top favourite film he enjoyed being apart of, same thing for De Niro. The film literally touches your heart, and teaches you the value of life and how many people take it for granted. God bless Williams and Oliver Sacks. Two heros in a better place now. It's also amazing how Williams a few years later would battle a similar brain trauma/disease. Theres no words that can fully describe this movie. Astonishing. I could say the part that hit me the most was when Leonard had said he counden't read anymore, and how he told his lover that it was his final time seeing her, like holy there is so much that could be said about the film, just you can't describe it, you can only see the film for yourself. God bless Williams, Sacks and all those patients who had suffered, and battled. Legends. Such an under-rated film.
2 legends 👌 Miss Robin Williams
De Niro was on fire in the early 90s
He was. That rocky and Bullwinkle film was when it all went south
I think de niro never lost that fire for over 5 decades ,Taxi Driver, Cape Fear and HEAT are my absolute favourites
Psychology students where you at
right here! ✋
I got punched by a client once jajaja
What does psychology have to do with this?
Kelsey Curles present
This is a film about neurology not psychology. Although his delusions and paranoia could apply
There's a dude from the sopranos in this scene
LOL! Yep.
I was just about to post this.
Lol yeah, I was reading Vincent Pastore, Vin Diesel and Peter Stormare all got their breaks in this film
Puss
Amazing De Niro, a legend
A living legend
A living hack.
I watched this film the other day and it just broke me 😓 such a sad film but brilliantly acted. Love the message behind the film
De Niro, WHAT AN ACTOR.
He was just playing himself...
@@buffythehaterslayer6918How ironic that you’re a hater too 😂
@@Viper-g6g I'm a hater slayer. I slay the haters.🤣🤣🤣
Good movie I liked it alot but it was sad they went back to being their old ways of being dead! The Doctors did everything they could for these people and they were tortured souls and lost souls and battered, abused hated feared, sorned, and it was all b/c their brains where different and Robert De Niro saying they are the crazy ones out there they are the crazy ones out there and he was right! People don't become crazy over night! Something bad happened to these people! These people are HUMAN Beings!
THEY DESERVED THE RIGHT CARE AND LOVE is the one thing that can save this poor souls.
EMOTIONAL absolutely incredible performance AMAZING LOVE IT oscars wakeup
R.I.P. Salvatore Bonpensiero
The two patients teasing Robin Williams as he walks out reminds me of my siblings growing up. I can't help but laugh.
I can't watch this without a box of tissues

I got what De Niro i having jerking movements all the time but i suffer from stress and anxiety it makes me cry seeing this 😭😭😭😭
This movie made me cry like a freakin baby.
The Awakening by far is one of the most deep heart felted movies I have ever watched even while writing this you just feel this sensation of sadness but also happiness as if you're on a Rollercoaster of emotions. One moment you're happy for the fight that he had, and how he was finally awakened with that beautiful smile he had, being able to move, checking out the bench he first carved his name, met the love of his life but the other just sadness about how he, himself, knew that it wasn't going to last forever and how he couldn't go for his walk.. the only walk he would've had by himself.. but knew that it was risky. There's honestly so much you can talk about the film, you just have to watch it yourself. I just love it how the girl still kept on visiting him and talking to him that's soul mates right there even I can somewhat relate to what happened in the movie which thank God I fully recovered from but its honestly personal a true fight indeed. You'll never find Doctors like him in this world anymore. One that cares for you, one that believes in you no matter what others say or if he's put down for it, one that has faith in you and if you do its rare. Not just that but I have to say Robert Di Niro and Robin Williams are both incredible actors, superb performances by far the greatest actors of all time especially how they both were so into the character, you can really tell they loved it and how dedicated they were almost as if it was them or how they, themselves, wanted to be like them. This is a true story about inspiration about not giving up no matter what and always fighting the fight that you hope & dream for in order to succeed - the fight of life. What hit me hard was when he wanted to walk to be honest, and how he managed to get the emotions of everyone by calling the Doctor in the middle of the night to tell him that we need to remind the people of this world to take granted of life, not the other way around. To live life, to appericate life as he does since he was locked up for the past 40 years in his own world while also fighting it. God bless Robin Williams... God bless.. Robert Di Niro and Leonard Low... especially the real life doctor where you can tell he truly cared about his patients and guess what? So did the patients themselves where they would even remind the Doctor to take care of himself. Another thing that made me deeply emotional is how he couldnt read anymore, and how he just wanted to take life granted. To exprience things on his own without there having to be someone there to monitor him so that he can feel the world that he always wanted to feel especially the girl he loved most... and the doctor he truly thanked. So many countless moments that you can talk about that hit your heart spot on. God bless all these patients, the doctors, Lennard and how nobody knew that even Robin Williams would suffer from a similar disease. It was also his favorite movie to act in since the human brain is just awe & extraordinary same thing with Robert Di Niro. You just have to watch the movie and apperciate what the doctor did to all these patients. Speechless right now, you ever have that feeling where you just can't describe it almost as if its a bundle of emotions of joy, sadness, happiness and etc? Because that's what I'm expressing right now. My favorite movie indeed & the best movie ever. Like my motto has been since I was kid live life to the fullest and always celebrate the day like its your last. 💙💙💙💙💙💙💙
NO ACTOR in history can do this kind of acting except de niro,i bet nicholson will fail to act like this,so perfect
What acting? He was just playing himself...
I can't believe that i watched this film 30 years ago for the first time. I did not know Di Nero i watched the film because i knew Robin Williams as i had watched some of his films before. I discovered Di Nero for the first time. I was puzzled at his performance. I cried. I talked to myself how brilliant he is. It was after watching the film that i learnt that Di Nero is a legend. I then watched almost all his movies afterwards.
De niro legendary
What's the best movie of DeNiro in your opinion?

Great film.
If u love the movie-read "The Man Who Mistook His Wife For His Hat" a wonderful book also by Oliver Sacks. He was a great man that changed the life of many for the better.
Wow this looks amazing
Even in the Ward he still has control over it
This movie testifies what great, versatile, accomplished actors De Niro and Williams are. De Niro is not just mobsters and tough guys, Williams is way beyond fast-paced, goofy comedic parts.
He’s pretty much the same guy in every movie, in this one he’s just himself with ticks. When he made casino he didn’t even try to change his accent like Pesci did. The one movie where he stepped out of his comfort zone a little bit was Cape Fear
Was that robe used in ferris bueler at the end of the movie lol
He's got tardive dyskinesia from excessive dopamine. It is also leading to delusional thinking.
It's actually a lack of dopaminergic receptors kind of like parkinsonism when the dopaminergic receptors are blocked by drugs that inhibit production
Sicknesses took me out the world
Notice how he got worse when he got mad. :(
I noticed that too.
I LOVED this film. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Sicknesses has took me out the world I been fighting to come back ever since
I remember when i watched this in the theater when i was 16. I dont know anything about the real story and i probably didnt even know this is based on a true story. But i was really depressed for the next day or two because this movie did not end with a happy ending.

The increased aggression was a side effect 😅
"You could wake up in the morning and it won't be there." ~~~~ Let that sink in. ~~~~ Which?
Robert DeNiro said making this movie messed with his mind for a while.
Why? He was just playing himself...

corporate ? There’s a reason people throw a punch, you listening ?🎉
I always thought Robin Williams was nothing more than a comedian, could only act that way, but I was completely wrong, only due to the fact I decided to see if there were any other movies he had starred in, and to my surprise, I was right, and to my shock, he acted serious in this movie which I forgot sorry. Anyways, he was a very good actor
This was when Bobby was in jail before going back to Jersey?
