  • There is a difference between survival and living in wild places. The line can be blurred any you can find yourself thrown back into a survival situation at any time. But at some point, when your most basic needs are met, "survival" becomes simply living. Building a comfortable bushcraft survival shelter with fireplace in the woods is one huge step towards sustainable wilderness living. This video covers the complete build of the tarp and log cabin I built on Season 8 of ALONE. I use only my axe, katanaboy saw, and Leatherman P4 for this bushcraft shelter build.

Clay, my son is now 32 years old and he still reminds me of the times when I used to take him hunting, camping, fishing and hiking and of all the things we used to do together when he was young. Now he’s teaching his son my grandson who is 11 years old to live off the land. You’re doing a great job with those boys. Keep up the good work. They will be eternally grateful for the lessons and the character that you are helping them to build.

If you burn the tips of the beams where they'll contact the floor with care, the wood will last much longer against humidity.
You can even put them down into a rock, earth & stones foundation, for even more stability and durability.
PS: love your simple and effective approach. And that woodworking with saw and axe was amazing.

Outstanding to see you handing down the skillset and steps it took to survive up to 75+ and beyond days not knowing how long you could spend in moher nature's yard before the possibility of rescue. I live in the Seirra Nevada Mountains of Northern Caliornia which also gives me the opportunity to teach my boy what it takes incase he were to ever find himself lost, stuck, stranded. I wanted to message you and congratulate you on the win in Season 8. But more importantly, to send my respects as a fellow woodsman, father and husband. Valuable knowledge to pass down generations to generations cause they really don’t teach things like this in school and if so it’s the bare minimum.

But for some reason, probably the birth of my daughter 2 weeks ago, I just realized something listening to this video. In a video showing us how he built his survival shelter, he's also showing us good parenting all along. It literally struck me. I told myself, thats the kind of dad I want to be.
