Bushcraft SURVIVAL Shelter with Fireplace - Complete Build, ALONE Season 8

- There is a difference between survival and living in wild places. The line can be blurred any you can find yourself thrown back into a survival situation at any time. But at some point, when your most basic needs are met, "survival" becomes simply living. Building a comfortable bushcraft survival shelter with fireplace in the woods is one huge step towards sustainable wilderness living. This video covers the complete build of the tarp and log cabin I built on Season 8 of ALONE. I use only my axe, katanaboy saw, and Leatherman P4 for this bushcraft shelter build.

In 50 years, those boys will still be looking back fondly at the experiences you created with them, appreciating the skills you left with them, and passing all of them along to their children and grandchildren.
I hope so!
Thats what its all about. Time spent with family and life long memories. More time in the woods, is always good
4 sure
i can remember the first time i harvested a Hunter, musta been about six yearn old . folks around these parts sure don't take kindly to poachers . comin' in here and takin' the food right outin of our younguns bellies . some folks is jez born evil i reckon . we keeps to ourselves mainly and if a stranger was to come by around suppertime they is more 'n welcome to et with us . but don't come stealin'
Absolutely
"Focus on accuracy, son; not power."
That's some damn good advice!

Lol calm ur nuts.
I love how you do this with your boys...and how you handle them, how you give them encouragement, compliments, teachings... this is what boys need and so few get from their dads nowadays. Good job
You are so kind
I couldn't say better and I wish I had a dad like Clay...
I wish my father stuck around so I could do things like this with him but I'm very good at it now without him and I'm happy
@@kaydinjudd3399 Keep going Kaydin :)
This what ALL kids need
Clay, my son is now 32 years old and he still reminds me of the times when I used to take him hunting, camping, fishing and hiking and of all the things we used to do together when he was young. Now he’s teaching his son my grandson who is 11 years old to live off the land. You’re doing a great job with those boys. Keep up the good work. They will be eternally grateful for the lessons and the character that you are helping them to build.
Thanks Richard
When you said early on that you were going to duplicate the experience at home with your boys, that was HUGE. Just an incredible way to share this with them.
Thanks Rob
Absolutely! To fill them in with the experience, and knowledge is Noble and great.
I wonder if he's going to starve them for full effect lol
Your outdoor skills are remarkable and your dad skills are even better! I'm learning a lot from you.
I appreciate that!
Watching you bond with your boys brought a tear to my eye ... you're an awesome dad Clay 👍👍
I appreciate that
What a great dad! Long after Clay Hayes is gone, those two kids will remember these times, the skills they learned, the stories their dad told them and all the good memories! Sure beats eight hours in front of computer screen playing shoot-em-up video games, getting obese and early heart disease.
So true...so true!!
If you burn the tips of the beams where they'll contact the floor with care, the wood will last much longer against humidity.
You can even put them down into a rock, earth & stones foundation, for even more stability and durability.
PS: love your simple and effective approach. And that woodworking with saw and axe was amazing.
It is great to see you included your sons in on building the same type of shelter you built on Alone. They will appreciate this time with their Dad.
Thanks
I believe this is one of the best shelters built featured in the alone series. It is simple yet very effective.
Thanks Jan
Outstanding to see you handing down the skillset and steps it took to survive up to 75+ and beyond days not knowing how long you could spend in moher nature's yard before the possibility of rescue. I live in the Seirra Nevada Mountains of Northern Caliornia which also gives me the opportunity to teach my boy what it takes incase he were to ever find himself lost, stuck, stranded. I wanted to message you and congratulate you on the win in Season 8. But more importantly, to send my respects as a fellow woodsman, father and husband. Thank you for the shows and videos you put out regarding Primitive Tool making and survival skills. Keep em coming sir.
Thanks much!
Those boys are lucky to have such an awesome dad. What a good role model for them to have. 👍💪
Love how you include your family those are memories all of y'all will treasure.
Always!
I love these videos! The show never has as much detail as I would like, so these are a great compliment
Glad you like them!
It would be awesome if they released more footage on their own channel or allowed the participants to take the footage and use it on their own channels.
@@HickLif3 i was thinking the same thing. They're holding on to gold and not taking advantage of it.
Clay, just finished watching the season finale of Alone Season 8. Thank you for your spirit and determination. God bless you and your family.
Thanks 😊
Here’s a man who understands being a father, and puts that understanding into action with his children. My hat is off to you, sir. I see why you won. You thought bit through to the finish before leaving home. Congratulations!
I’m so proud of you cause I know I wouldn’t be able to survive i solute and take my hat off to u cause your the definition of a real father figure I wish I could teach my kids something this valuable in life that really means something in life ……yes going to work to provide for your family is what a father is supposed to do but being able to teach your children something like this is amazing. Valuable knowledge to pass down generations to generations cause they really don’t teach things like this in school and if so it’s the bare minimum.
Thanks, you don’t have to be an expert to teach the kids about the outdoors. Just give them the opportunity to be outside, turn over rocks, explore, and they’ll learn so much themselves! Take them camping 🏕!
I am 27 with a 2 year old little guy, and baby girl due this summer. There are many troubling things that have come with the times we are in, but the ability to be inspired by strangers has been a blessing I didn’t see coming.
Clay, the way you interact with your boys is a pure light in this world, and although my skill set has evolved a bit more around nuts and bolts than branches and mud, I hope I can be as impactful to my children. Thank you for the sharing this, and for the inspiration.
Thanks John, kids can turn wrenches too😉
Legendary
Dad & survival skills
Those boys will remember this forever
You seem like a great Dad man. My son turns 3 in a few days here and I love to take him to do stuff outdoors. I can't wait til he's a bit older and we can do stuff like this together.
Could definitely see the boys useing the shelters for camp outs. Can't wait to see them making one of their own.
ال آراده تصنع کل شئ .حتی الولاد یصنعونها
Kids are definitely getting good outdoor lessons and Bush craft skills.I always loved doing things with my Dad.I am old now but I still think back about our fishing adventures.Golly ,I wish I could go back in time.
Right on
Your videos are very well made! In these time of insecurity and authorities oppressions all over the world I started watching all Bushcraft videos and finally I found your channel! I watch it with my 5 years old son! It’s hard to get him interested what I tried to learn but he’s still young! You and your son are an inspiration for the both of us! Thanks for sharing your skills and father relationship with your kids! Great work! Peace
Thanks much
Love this video great to see the young bucks of this world learning old world skills)))
One of the greatest things about being a Dad is sharing experiences with one's children because they'll always remember these builds with dear old Dad . This is one outstanding video thanks for sharing 👍😀👏🙌😊🙏👍
Thanks
I'm a little late to the show on this video but I truly enjoyed it. I mostly enjoyed the fact that you spent so much quality time with your boys. They will always remember this and it will cement your status as a loving Father for the rest of their lives. These moments are all we truly have. Good times..
That was beautiful i sent it to my son for his son , :) ty Jesus
Great thing, teaching your kids life skills. Now, that's quality time! They'll treasure those memories for the rest of their lives.
Good job boys. And big thanks for the cameraman.
I love all the content clay show us on his channel. its always interesting and well explained. I like to have his video on wile I do some work on my bow, preparing for hunting. But for some reason, probably the birth of my daughter 2 weeks ago, I just realized something listening to this video. In a video showing us how he built his survival shelter, he's also showing us good parenting all along. It literally struck me. I told myself, thats the kind of dad I want to be. Let her try and learn technic, how to use tool, have good manner, ask for her opinion, and so on. Thanks for this good lesson, greeting from Quebec, Ca.
... et le plus important de tout Benjamin c'est de toujours être juste avec elle. Et aussi de ne pas lui donner tout cru dans le bec et qu'il faut qu'elle fasse sa part d'efforts, ça va lui éviter de mal finir un jour ou l'autre....
You sir are an inspiration to men everywhere!
Best Fort ever THANKS DAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!
😜
Glad you made this. While watching the show, I didn't realize how nice your shelter was till the show was almost over. This gave me a much better understanding of it. Great job!
Your boys will grow up good kids Clay - they have a fantastic 'significant male' in their lives. I'm a high school teacher in Australia and boys who have no SM in their lives grow up angry, they don't respect woman and they are like a ship with no rudder. You are doing a fantastic job mate so keep up the good work!
Thanks Philip
Hey Clay thank you for sharing this awesome shelter, i watched the show and it was too fast to see how you did the build. Also thanks for letting your boys help out, it reminded me of my time spent with my dad teaching me survival stuff. Im 69 and sent in my application to the casting call for Alone, ill be 70 when they pick my name out of the applicants. I have learned so much watching the 10 seasons. I have also enjoyed your other posts on archery, trapping and all. You have been my favorite contestant so far! Thanks again!
Homer
Thanks Homer. Good luck
@@clayhayeshunter thanks man I'll need it 70 and crazy I guess!
I got your book, that will help, I'm really enjoying it
Makes me remember my time with my grandfather and would take me out hunting, fishing, and camping. He past a year ago and now I'm teaching my daughters to enjoy the forest and being out.
Good stuff Clay! Making memories with those boys is your life’s work amigo.
Hey clay , glad to see your doing well after the show. That’s it teach your boys real well. They must be proud of you. Hope to see mor of you guys on RUclips >
Kren sobat ❤❤ hati-hati dalam beraktifitas, sukses selalu, salam kenal 🙏
Man the fact you have those young men out there with you makes it the best bushcraft vid I've seen in a very long time...I'm 53 and my 4 sons are grown now but when we did this stuff together for a weekend...well there was nothing better...my only regret was not taking more pictures...not gonna lie...I've got a tear...but it's a really great tear...Rock on dad, Rock on young men...Pure Awesomeness all the way around 💯👊😎🙏
Thanks
I love it. The Family time is priceless, I just got back from camping with the family God blessed me with, and encourage people to spend time and do the types of things we see Clay achieve with his family. Invest time in your kids it has the best return in the end.
Thanks
Very lucky boys w a dad like that wjo s a true family man... lucky wife as well. A blessed family by God himself. Inagine God giving him a rainbow after the deerhunt. Great.
You are a good Dad,
You sir, are awesome. What a great set of memories and skills these kids will have.
Thank you kindly!
Excellent shelter - I really love how your boys got to help - that is a lesson they will never forget. Getting ready to sit down and watch the new episode - god bless and take care.
It is a true joy to watch you working with your kids and teaching them. There is no better family building exercise. It brings tears to my eyes.
You are so kind
Great example of fatherhood and leadership. Makes me excited to have my own kids someday
Now that's a Dad. Well done brother, teaching boys how to be men.
I try
Your videos have been a sanctuary away from the chaos of the world right now. Thanks for posting
Thanks much
This is absolutely inspiring to bring this type of education to his children. It’s not even education…it’s Freedom
I’ve been watching RUclips for years and by far this is the best show I’ve seen yet.
Your boys are precious.
That there boy is gonna grow up to be a great man like you
😊
It's a blessing to do that with your boys be thankful
4:44😁 Great video teaching them youngsters
I love that you involve your sons. Great job. Great parenting.
You are so kind
Great Video ..... like that you are actually talking , your Boys are so cute too ..... They grow up way to fast .... thanks
Clay I liked ya before buddy. But I respect you now more than I did before. And that says a lot!!
Thanks Byron
Im very late for Season 8. Congratulation! You deserved it.
What a great experience for your boys! It’s so important to pass on knowledge and experience while making memories.
Just came across Season 8 and yay you go Idahoan! I have no idea such shows exist! Crazy!Love the shelter especially the fire place 👍🏼 this is a great video with you and your sons replicated it with more details and spent time together 💪🏻
Your being a great dad to your kids brother! Well done. My dad never finished high school but he’s one of the smartest men I’ve ever known. He can make anything with anything. Great memories of him when I was a kid. Minus the holding the flashlight job. Seems I never got the light beam in the right place.🤪
I appreciate that!
How nice seeing a man and his sons working together on a project. You are going to raise great kids.
thanks Susan
These are great skills to be teaching those boys. They’re lucky to have a great Dad.
Heck in 50 years these will STILL be on RUclips, YOUR BOYS WILL JUST GO TO THERE LIKED VIDEOS
GREAT MENTOR YOU ARE CLAY
Finn already has it. Kid wants to work and learn, you can tell its fun for him. Great work ethics already. Led by his pops.
I am so happy he won. I was so upset that with 4 left, Hurricane Ida hit us direct and devastated our towns. My house did well! But no power, no cable meant no Alone! I do have an iPad and iPhone with 4G so was able to find out who won. Was thrilled because I thought he was the one with the best survival skills and the best outlook and well he killed a deer! Congratulations Clay! I was rooting for you. Jeanette/Galliano, LA
I drank a lot of cedar tea out there, it was a moral booster at times. Must have been super tough at time missing your boys. I didn’t have any yet when I was on the show. At the same time, I imagine they could also give you strength out there to stay.
Yeah, it can go both ways. In the end, I ended up drawing a lot of strength from them.
Fantastic build! Great video! Well done!
This is what winning looks like right here.
I'm a father of three, all toddlers, but I loved this episode. Never thought, by any means, that you were a bad or non loving dad, but it shows through in this episode how much that time away from the boys showed YOU how much you love them.
Time alone gives perspective!
Making memories what it’s truly all about.
Clay is a master. He s great. He knows what s he s doin. A young master survivarlist
Those boys working with you. That's good parenting! I love the tools that you made. You made tools to make tools. Lol. Other contestants may have put in the detail/time you did but it doesn't show up on the show like yours has. The little things like cutting notch in a pole to hold another pole in place, then wire it tight. Seems others have just wired it together. Genuine stuff!
Thanks Danny
That's pretty awesome to get the kids involved. It helps give them skills for when they grow up. Plus spending time with Dad 😃👍🏼
Much respect for clay s family. Very much respect for History Channel. Tyvm.
I love how you share your tea out of one mug❤️
I've spent many hours, as a kid, working quite hard, to clear $1 per hour. So, day-dreaming while clearing $250 an hour is a piece of cake.
awesome.God bless you all.
What a brilliant way to bond with your kids
This is such a beautiful video. Thanks for sharing.
In Russia, stoves in houses are built inside the house, and in America, a fireplace is made almost on the street.
Great daddy with great advice. "Focus on accuracy son, not power" doing great Clay keep it up
Looks like sumac tea. Great fun for the boys. I remember doing things like this when I was in the Boy Scouts (50 years ago).
You should experience the boundary waters canoe area with your boys in northern Minnesota
Congrats on the win! I knew you could do it!
These boys are lucky to have a dad like you.
Play in the mud for young and old boys NEVER gets old!!!! Way to go dad!!!
😉
Kids are lucky to have a dad like that. Good family. Editor, please also give older son some close up as well. ;)
Wow! Just awesome. Craftsmanship. Skill. Knowledge. Understanding. Strategy. I'm blown away.
Thanks Roy
It's good. To quote your son. 👍
This is inspired.. during this world pandemic , it is good to be with family... thanks....
Thanks much
Good job dad! The experience and memory are epic for these 2!! TY
Thanks Scott
Those boys are extremely lucky to have you as their father Clay.
Dude, this content is underrated. God job gang! Glad i found you
Welcome aboard!
Is there any thought process that goes into the wood you use for your shelter?
Or do you just pick what is straight and available?
For a relatively short term, like a couple months, I just bloom for anything straight and of the right size.
Your boys will probably remember this for the rest their lives. So fun to watch you working with them.
I hope you’re enjoying your prize money! 👍👍
You’re such an amazing father❤
Best dad ever…
