    Ideally, software should simply be able to dynamically tell the OS through the multi-threading API whether the thread requires single-threaded performance, large cache, low power, data and co-concurrency proximity requirements with other threads, etc. and be scheduled on the most appropriate available cores instead of some arbitrary external software forcing things. Also, outright parking cores seems a bit excessive when you can simply set processor affinity to steer a task to specific CPUs.

    • @q1337
      @q1337 Год назад

      not all programs use default settings and can force it by some proprietary algorithm . I see why they went for the make it unavailable approach since this is a more sure way to guarantee it.

      @@serena-yu That doesn't make any sense: Microsoft and Linux multi-threading APIs already allow threads to set their own priority levels, so nothing is stopping them from requesting the highest priority today if they wanted to yet practically all software either lets the OS decide or actually lowers priority on background threads.
      Setting everything to highest priority when it doesn't actually need it would just piss people off by causing unnecessary performance issues with other software.

    really important right now is to install the driver after you installed the new X3D on the motherboard or else the driver does not set up the cache performance optimizer correctly.
    this might be overlooked by people having still the old CPU in the motherboard for the BIOS update then already installing the new driver with the old CPU inside.

      If you are building or upgrading PCs you should be knowledgeable of what you are buying or building for someone.
      No, not all hardware is plug and play. You need to do a few steps to get everything working properly.

Either that or there is a separation between the use cases of the 2 caches, basically offloading certain cache types to one over the other. Like games for example, they have information the V cache can store more easily while the standard cache works on everything that isn't gaming.

If you have one of these parts and look in (Hardware Info) a free tool, you will see that you have 2 separate CCX's and one of them usually hit's higher clocks slightly over the other.. In other words you can at least make sure you are gaming on the Binned CCX over the slower CCX, It may make a 2% difference and probably isn't worth doing.. I wonder if AMD has considered an L4 cache on the IO-die. The bandwidth and latency is limited by the IF, but would still be much faster than RAM access.
    It would also have the advantage that there's significantly less heat output from the IO-die compared to a CCD, both CCDs would not be thermally constrained by the cache die and both CCDs would benefit the same way from a L4 cache on the IO-die.

    This is the hackiest CPU I've ever seen released from a major vendor. What a crazy number of hoops you have to jump through to take full advantage of this. Not a fan of the implementation, but I guess if it results in superior performance, it's a win once everything is configured correctly.

    • @acidtoe1278
      @acidtoe1278 Год назад

      The issue is not with the cpu, it's with the operating system.
      It's on the os to properly utilize resources, but Microsoft has not had enough time to properly work out how to schedule a cpu with specialized v-cache cores.
      Given enough time, the user won't need to configure anything. This is just a different version of Intel's e-cores.
