Pete Townsend had said that the Grateful Dead could play anything by anybody. He said that if a guy in the audience called out 'play Beethoven's 5th' they could play it.

Brent played with the Dead form 1979 until he died in 1990. True that Pete Townsend didn't really add much but his animated presence.

Ive always wondered if E. Clapton could have played w the boys that is would he have added much. Just as an aside. Pete is fun at least.

@@rhlang11 After Jerry died I was watching Larry King. Clapton was his guest. Someone called in a question and asked Clapton if he would like to play with the Grateful Dead and he said yes, he would like to discover what it was all about.

@@samblethen interesting. I think he could play w them on most tunes that didnt get too complicated or 'out there". I never got the Clapton thing minus Layla or Lay Down Sally. His production value was quite good though.

@@rhlang11 He could never sound like Jerry. John Mayer said 'to sound like Jerry you have to make people feel like he did, and well-good luck with that'.

Rockpalast was a concert format TV show that was, maybe still is, broadcast all over Europe, from Essen, Germany, West Germany at this point in history. Pete is trying to go fast and the rest of the boys in The Dead are saying "Whoa, buddy, slow down." Honestly, Pete just looks confused and totally out of place. It is BRENT Mydland, who joined up in late 1979. This was a double bill with The WHO, the Grateful Dead closed the event. Thanks Sam.

I think Pete added a different kind of energy to this, especially at the beginning.
I know that they're practically the same song, but the first few minutes, before "Not Fade Away" really established itself, it almost sounded as though they were going to be playing "Mona", which would be appropriate because of their Quicksilver brothers.

    Brent Mydland joined in 1979

You are correct in that Pete didn’t add a lot in terms of solos and stuff. But, he did add an edge to the usual sound of this song. And I have friends who flew to Europe a couples times in 80s and 90s to see shows

Never rated Pete Townsend and in fact never really rated The Who. Only album of theirs worth listening to in my opinion is Live At Leeds.
I was never particularly a Rolling Stones fan either, but their version of this song is to me the definitive one!
    Regards from across the pond!

I could tell you a Townsend story when they played a week of Tommy here in NYC at the Fillmore East but it is not a pleasant one

Other than bouncing around (in contrast to the Dead) Pete didn't add anything to this version other than his name.

Pete's style does not blend well with The Dead at all.
