This is a cover of Buddy Holly, this song generally ended the second set and they would let the crowd sing a few minutes before they came out for the encore. Always a fun song but ultimately you knew the show was over. Great reaction continue on with The Dead.
The chemistry between Jerry and Brent is pretty much self-evident: they loved playing together, and you hear the results, because this is awesome.
The Grateful Dead - the greatest jam band of all time. This was improvised. Jerry Garcia came from a bluegrass background where the instruments all talked to each other and this carried over to the Dead. I first saw them in Boston in 1967. Duane Allman from the Allman Brothers said this: “I love the Dead. As far as Jerry Garcia, Jerry Garcia could walk on water. He could do anything any man could ever do. He's a prince.”
No question, lots of great guitar players over the years. Duane, Jerry, & Roy Buchanan are MY three FAVES of ALL TIME!!!
The guy on the keys is Mr. Brent Mydland (RIP), and he and Jerry Garcia (RIP) had a great rapport, which is why Jerry is next to him on stage, so they can play off each other. Even though the song is from the 1950's, every time I saw The Dead play it, it was like a new song, but you knew it. Ya know. And don't miss Phil Lesh on the Bass, he brings it. "You know our love will not fade away!"
The Dead allowed fans to record concerts so bootlegs are plentiful. Live is the ultimate way to listen to them. They also allowed unregistered merchandise to be sold outside events so the Deadheads could support themselves as they followed the tour !
Just for the record - GDP (Grateful Dead Productions) used to "police" the parking lot scenes (the vendor bazaars out in the parking lots were/are commonly referred to as "Shakedown Street") and would confiscate merchandise that was not licensed properly with GD registered trademarks and logos. They were certainly not real militant about it, but they did do it. I was told back in the day that they needed to make at least a nominal effort as part of the licensing fees that they did charge so that the people who did pay to legally produce steal your face and other branded merchandise would have a reason to actually pay for the rights to do so.
Jerry and Brent loved each other and shared a rare musical comraderie!! And yeah, we would usually keep singing the chorus until they came back out for encore! (~)};-》
An absolute joy of a version.
The Dead and The Allman Brothers Band were both what we called "jam bands". If you were lucky enough to see them live, they were known for carrying on long past the supposed concert time. Other artists would often step in and play a number or two. It is a very family atmosphere.
I saw over 100 shows from 1983 thru 1995.This show from july 4th 1989 was one the best during that time.Every song was done to perfection on that night.With this song wrapping it all up.
This is from my era - went from college and Dead shows into the Army about this time. Fantastic pick for a reaction. I get a little loose with the tears during the Brent and Jerry jam.
The cool thing about Dead audiences, if a song like Not Fade Away ended the concert, the crowd would continue singing after the lights came up. At the next concert on the next night, the crowd would start singing Not Fade Away before the concert started, and the band would come on stage and go back into the song like it hadn't even ended.

They also used to play "Playin' in the Band" during the first set, all but the last chorus, then segue into the next song. During the second set they would slip the last chorus of "Playing" into the end of another song.
I guy I knew went to all their New England shows one year and, I think it was New Hampshire, in the second set comes the last chorus of "Playin".
My friend started singing along then thought "Wait, they never played the beginning". At that point he realized they played the beginning of the song in Boston the night before then finished it the next night in New Hampshire. Just a little "gotcha" for the faithful fans.

I'm surprised they never played in new Hampshire. I know they didn't like playing the old Boston Garden because the acoustics were terrible. I saw them at the Music Hall (which was later restored and renamed the Wang Theater). That building may have the best acoustics of any place I know.

If memory serves (that’s a big “if”), there 3 non-consecutive shows where they did Dark Star.
1st show = first verse
2nd show with DS = jam
3rd show (and the last of the 6 I attended) = second verse
Hearing Dark Star was pretty dang rare. For that tour, they played it once … over 3 random shows.

I saw them over 50 times..and I'm a rookie,saw them last in 95..then Jerry passed..saw the off shoot bands a few times. Watching this actually brought a tear to my eyes..lot of fun times.
The audience participation aspect evolved spontaneously over the 1980s. The audience basically inserted themselves into the song, and the band figured out how to roll with it.
"Not Fade Away" is a Buddy Holly Song, also done by the Rolling Stones. This is a song they most often played as the last song in the set or as the encore. The back and forth between Jerry(Guitar) and Brent(Keyboard), as well as between the band and the audience is a musical trope known as "Call and Response".

Great review. Deadheads will gladly tell you what their favorite performance of their favorite song was. No two performances were quite the same, some drastically different. Many would pick this one for Not Fade, because of the conversation between Jerry and Brent. Rock on!
They may have played this song more polished before, but the beauty of the ending takes the cake!

When you consider this song started out as an approximately 2 1/2 minute Buddy Holly song in 1956….
You've maybe seen these quotes before,but they really encapsulate the Dead,I think.

I was at that show. General admission ticket prices went up to $27 that year I believe, we were incensed! God do I miss those days.
I saw them in Atlanta and they did this as their encore. The crowd sang it so loud and so long, they came out for a second, a cappella encore. One of those incredible moments I’ll always treasure. I got to see them 26 times before Jerry passed, but got to see Dead and Company 52 times! 26 of those were summer 2023. A dream come true!
Sadly we lost Brent the following year, but this was my era for seeing them live. When they'd hit that hard stop after a raucous jam and all come in MY LOVE IS BIGGER THAN A CADILLAC!!! Man, nothing like it... Long Live the Dead (Also, don't forget to give Phil some love on that bass - always living in The Phil Zone!)
Proud to say I was at this show and I remember this clearly,,,I was 18 yrs old in 89 and we just thumbed from the Foxboro show on 7/2 after breaking down on the road..We earned THIS show and I’m so glad we pushed on because out of about 150 Dead and JGB shows I saw this is way up on the list ❤️NFA-GD4LIFE

We lived in both, the 2700’ had three rooms that we never used.

In my humble opinion if you want to check out Not Fade Away and Goin' down the road feeling bad... the version from the Skull & Roses album is the absolute best.
an old Buddy Holly classic - like 1957 or so..... the Dead of course were particularly noted for turning 3 min tunes into 12 min riff alongs. Or great ' mood pieces' on occasion. (turn the lights down,. way down ) ps the best example of that ( Utube video ) is ' Morning Dew' from the '74 Dead movie. song inspired by the old flick ' on the Beach' which'll rock yer brain.written by Canadian B Dobson. not on Utube as a video, but my fave even more than Hendrix or Allman's - from the 3 LP disc ' Europe 72'. about 25 min combine ' Prelude & M.D. '' so great. to me. enough of that. oh, have Ya watched the ' Woodstock ' movie

Leaving a Dead show after “NFA” into the lot , stumbling happy through the Lot with nothing but smiling faces and shining eyes. Then to find some watermelon and cold water ❤ transcendental. Yes. I’m a 70 year old retired navy submarine fella.
The drummers are two of the biggest in the game. Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart have huge set ups that became very upfront in the middle of second sets of most Grateful Dead shows. On their own they are known as the Rythm Devils a comprehensive percussion band you may have heard of without knowing the name as they did most of the non vocal musical accompaniments for the movie: Apocalypse Now. Jerry, Phil and Mickey also created many of the musical sounds, through midi, heard on tracks today, from all types of artists.

Gerry Garcia is a mad genius of a guitar player. He is an endless fountain of lyrical ideas. I didn't get this when I first started listening to him but the more I listened to his playing the more I came to realize how amazing he really is. This is a cover of a classic Buddy Holly song.

In Deadbase '90, there are photos of the band throughout the year. I thought Jerry looked particularly depressed in the second half.

Tiger was Jerry Garcia's main guitar from 1979 to 1989. It was designed and built by Sonoma County luthier Doug Irwin.
That guitar's name is TIGER one of Jerry's favorites....also this is a cover of Buddy Holly's song. I always liked the response of the crowd on this song, happens every time

Great cover of Buddy Holly song. You heard about his 1959 plane crash in American Pie. Not Fade Away is covered by others. there is a greate youtube video clip from a 1964 TV show in which The Rolling Stones cover it, theyare sooo young, 60 years ago. The girls from the crowd and their reaction is priceless

Right, it’s only the most famous (and most covered) song in rock and roll. Its awesome riff came first as a variation of the Bo Diddley Beat, listen to his “Mona”, the biggest rocking song in the whole genre.

Most commenters take some time before getting into the live performances, where the meat is. I’m hoping you will consider another classic track from the same year as this show. Much of the Dead’s magic happens as they transition from one song to the other (the arrow). Please try China Cat Sunflower -->>> I know you Rider from Alpine Valley. I know you’ll get a kick out of the Jerry/Brent “conversations” on this one. At one point I’m pretty sure they are silently laughing at Bobby Weir’s short shorts.

"I don't know how much of that was improvised"? 95% of everything the Dead did was improvised. You could hear a song, then a year later at another show hear the same song, but it's played completely different. They were masters at just letting the music take them where it wanted to go. As the lyrics to their song "the music never stopped" they sing the music played the band.
