    I really wanted to like the liqtechs. I liked the idea of the coldplate covering the entire die. About when I bought my 1950x the issues started coming in. I went with the big daddy noctua and its been humming along for years at this point.

      I just use an AM3 generic universal CPU cooler smashed under the AIO mount with a peanut butter lid cut up acting as a spacer to press from the AIO adapter bracket to the generic AM3 mounting adapter plate. Temps seem to be fine like 50-60c depending on load and how many GPUs I'm running since I have 1.7 kW of power draw from the wall on 4x Fury Xfire running Crysis 3 at 100 fps at 4k Ultra (220x240x80mm copper radiator, and that's with 2-3 fans running out of 4 because I ran out of fan headers that were close enough to plug in). I know with a 120mm AIO first gen Asetek I was still able to hit 4.2 Ghz all core at 465w reported (seemed to be pretty accurate) and keeping in the 80's on the CPU so Threadripper stays really cool even when half the CPU IHS is visible and not covered at all.

      For liquid cooling to really be a thing we need a breakthrough in materials, chemistry and pump design, otherwise is a money sink, it will always die sooner than any air cooler.

    • @jakegarrett8109
      @jakegarrett8109 3 года назад +1

      @@javierortiz82 I don't know as that it needs to last longer than a hunk of metal (my water cooled tablet used automotive antifreeze and was fine for over 3 years using mix of copper and steel which with normal water within a couple days had so much rust balls floating I had to flush to not ruin the pump). My phase cooler is probably the best, it hasn't needed service for 15 years at least (Asetec discontinued in 2006, so at least that old), and it was still cooling fine at -60c idle and -35c max load ever recorded stressing FX at 1.7 Vcore (estimated would be 550w at room temp but due to chilled effect it improved by about 30% efficiency and was only using 350w, which is probably a touch more than the cooler used but I really only cared about the massive performance increase).
      Most people replace computers every X years, so your cooler probably for most people only needs to last X + a little longer. Many people don't even clean their computers (I've seen some so packed you couldn't see the heatsink, it looked like a dead mouse, and to this day I'm pretty sure it actually might have been a dead mouse sandwiched into the heatsink because there was another one in the power supply), and that computer was still running... Plus like my Threadripper using an AM3 mount sandwiched under trash, my Ryzen X370 couldnt use that cooler either (my phase cooler I made my own mounts and for FX I used a socket 775 because it was before even AM3...), So that's another problem, all my coolers are so old and still working I'm having to engineer new mounts because sockets keep changing and nobody else supports the cooler.

I dismantled the II and cleaned/flushed and refilled with car orange glycol in 1/3 solution. However the pump failed after a year while the new coolant seemed to do OK. I have used the Cooler Master TR 360 and I had my first one die this year from around 2018. It had cooled a 1950X mainly used for 3D rendering (Cycles) and editing. I have a second one now and no issues yet. It cannot cool the 3970x TR long term but that is fine as a custom loop is pretty much needed to render with it.

  • @TrueThanny
    @TrueThanny 3 года назад

    The obvious answer is custom cooling, which gives you a choice of several full cover water blocks, including ones that also cool the VRM's (motherboard-specific, obviously).
    A custom loop is more expensive, of course, but you get more control over the components, which allows for better cooling and lower noise than any AIO or air cooler.

    I am sufficiently skeptical about liquid cooling that I would not consider buying a cheap one. Air cooling is just as good for the same fin area, so that is first choice for a machine that you expect to keep for a while. It's interesting you upload this video today, I was just relooking at yours and Steve Burkes coverage of these Enermax coolers for Threadripper, as I was questioning the overall performance of my AIO on my 2990WX, a MSI's MAGCORE 360R cooler. I keep the CPU in a BIOS configured Precision Boost Overdrive, 500W, manual Scaler set to 4X. It ran solid for the first 4 months with it but for last 3 months I had it off because I was awaiting a GPU replacement, now it's back up and I can't hit my previous achieved CPUz Benchmark numbers and I'm wondering if the CPU is getting hotter quicker.
    So I been looking at AIOs out there and once again I'm reminded how there's barely any good AIOs for Threadripper.
    My 2990WX seem to be idling at 34-42C still on the 360R cooler though, but it does heat up quick.
    I been aiming for maximum performance off this CPU.
    Motherboard: MSI X399 MEG Creation
    RAM: 64GB DDR4 @ 3000 CL16
    prior to last year I had this CPU paired with the MSI X399 SLI Plus, and a Cooler Master MasterLiquid 240 cooler, and wasn't getting nearly enough performance off the top in that setup, without having to disable cores.

    Meanwhile I'm here with a 3600 chugging happily along with its stock cooler.
    Though my case is a bit unusual with the back fan as intake and front fans as outtakes, this is thanks to my RX580 being a furnace and blowing out air front and back rather than sides, caused a huge hot air bubble at the front when those were intakes.

    I had a Liqmax II 240 AIO on a 1700X for 3 years. The 1700X was overclocked slightly during that time. Then one day, the computer kept turning off. I opened the PC (I built it), made sure all the connections were good and the power supply was putting out the proper voltage. Start the computer, a few moments later, it would shut off.
    I put my finger on the CPU pump and it was HOT. Took out the AIO and put in a Hyper 212 and gave it to my wife who doesn't do anything stressful.
    I was sad over the fact that the AIO didn't last. I didn't open it to look at it after watching Gamers Nexus reporting on the "gunk". Now, watching Wendell removing the Liqtech II, which was "suppose" to have addressed this problem... I will not consider Enermax (whose products looked good, have good initial performance and are priced right) for anything.
    This video hurts their credibility and will hurt their sales.
    Thanks Wendell for doing this.... no more, as you say, "throwing good money after bad...."

    If you use the proper coolant you can avoid metal corrosion like that. There are automotive coolant compositions (BASF G12++ for exmple) that will successfully stop corrosion like this from building up. Even if you combine copper, aluminium and other metals.

    I had an original H80 that ran until last year - a full 10 years.
    The waxy and sandy buildup is probably the plasticizer in the tubes breaking down.

  • @jckf
    @jckf 3 года назад

    The "waxy" stuff is probably plasticizer from the hoses. Cheap hoses do that, and the problem gets worse with heat. I first became aware of this when doing Folding at Home, as my loop very quickly deteriorated when the machine was working hard 24/7.

    My first 360mm TR LiqTech II OC died within half a year. The inlet was blocked by some big rock-like formation. The pump itself was full of smaller... minerals.. residue? Something... It was a horror show. Anyway, the system overheated after a few minutes after a cold boot. Luckily the replacement that Enermax sent has lasted almost 2 years now and I hope it will last a few more years. I haven't serviced the new unit in any way. The CPU is 2950X. Has been lightly clocked for the entire time.

    I liked the Corsair AiO's - until H80 and the replacement from H80i died in one of the PC's. The other PC had H100, H110 fail and moved to NZXT Kraken X-65 which failed too - both machines are rocking the Noctua towers for over a year now - just have been cleaning the fins of dust ... and no issues this far. I really liked the AiO idea - water cooling made simple and easy - but the reliability just is not there for me.

    Speaking of time bombs… I have decided to resurrect my RMA-ed Liqtech after having it for 2 yrs on my floor… As I unscrewed cold plates 3rd screw, it just “exploded”, bending cold plate and spraying me and my living room with all the gunk that was inside…. It was really surprising how much pressure it held. When I fixed it all and put HQ mixed metals coolant in and installed it I discovered that radiator has inflated channels and air cannot flow trough it, if you put flashlight behind, no light goes trough. :( so sad.. I had the Noctua shown in video installed on my 2990wx since the RMA

    I have a cheapo xigmatek 240mm cooler I bought for $60 that has been working great for 4 years, still the same healthy temperatures.
    Two different 6700k builds and now on a 10900f.
    I too put noctua fans on it.
    My only complaint is the water is a little loud? Like maybe there's air in it.
    It sounds like a HDD scratching but its coming from the copper plate, not the pump or a hdd etc.
    It's not loud, I'm just sensitive to noise.

    with mixed metals wouldn't the issue be the coolant becomes an electrolyte and the cooler basically electroplated itself to death? Especially if the metals are grounded through the pump housing to the power connecter to the power supply ground? Extremely low voltage yes but over the course of a year microvolts would be enough.

    That sand is galvanic corrosion, experienced that in Barton time. I did not believe that corrosion can occur in distilled water. Put Copper and Aluminum in clean large plastic box on opposite sides and only distilled water. After few days there is little black deposits on one metal and lot of white crystals on other.

    I got a warranty replacement for mine that I was going to do a the fluid replacement on and then throw into my server box. Guess I'll figure out something else. If so many fluid mixes had issues, then their story of this being an issue with their mixture doesn't check out. Clearly something about the materials they used was problematic. I wouldn't be surprised if the quality of one of the metals was beyond what the mixed metal additives can handle. Depending on the additives that corrosion manifested in different ways.

    I wasn't willing to spend the $$$ or do the maintenance required to replace a LiqYeck II with a custom loop so I puta DarkRock Pro TR4 on my 2950x threadripper after the second LickYeck II 360 stopped giving good thermals. I though of using another AIO but all the supposed TR4 aios don't have full coverage cold plates. The DarkRock Pro TR4 more or less keeps the 2950x thermals under control but the fans definitely make their presence known when rendering video or doing something else that that gets the long term attention of all the cores / threads. Adding insult to injury the Lian Li pc-o11 dynamic doesn't have sufficient room for a tower cooler so I had to migrate the system to another case - Fractal R6 - abandoning most of the cool custom cables I had mad for the Lian Li case installtion. Ennermucks, I will *****NEVER***** buy another of your products.
    This is one reason (cost being the other) I have not upgraded to a newer Threadripper. It looked to me that custom loop is the only way to do a serious cooling job on a 32 or 64 core threadripper. Not to mention needing a 360mm aio to cool my credit card if I bought one...
    Say AMD, if nobody else is going to make a good aio cooling solution for threadrippers, why don't you guys do it? You might sell more of those cpus!
