I have been using Pro Tools for some 15 years, I see a lot of people using Ableton now, but me coming from the old 2" tape and digital multitrak machine background, I just don´t have any desire in switching to another system. About the latency you mentioned I have actually landed on the right solution for me to have Pro Tools run in sample accurate sync which is important to me. The trick is to have an audio track produce very good midi, instead of a midi track. Anyways, thanks for your videos.
I just bought my carbon because I am just a through and through pro tools user the editing is just unbeatable I had a ultimate license just for volume trim and when I saw this deal for the carbon I was sold I’ve been wanting a carbon and my main mixing plugins are plug-in alliance and most of my sessions are vocal sessions so it’s awesome to be able to have my vocals mixed while tracking but I really think this is a step towards avid making their own plugins like ua tbh
Because Carbon is priced so high, that you’d expect the most advanced Pro Tools version included. I was quite surpriced that it was’nt. Until now. Just a bit of ‘fairness’ - I guess.
@@perhoier2881 100%. I made a commitment to Logic and native processing years ago and only recently switched to Cubase this year. ProTools still considered the final mix DAW of choice but I think those days are numbered when there is Nuendo + UAD2, and when budgets just aren't what they used to be.
@@ezrashanti except that an 8xP can power the UAD plugins. Not saying Carbon doesn't look awesome - just that it combined with the price if PT against what one gets with something like Nuendo running alongside UAD2 plugs makes me lean towards Steinberg and UA
@@canvoodoo Oh yes, I think that was the issue, as I needed to use control room, so I just used the external software for cues. But yeah they should fix that. Unfortunately it seems the interface isn't very popular in the states, despite being excellent.

Digital Mixers such as the StudioLive 32 allow zero latency recording with motorized faders, 4+ stereo effects, compression and EQ on every channel for half the price of the Carbon.
I am a big UAD user. my computer is pretty high spec but I really do enjoy being able to not use any cpu to do real time tracking. I think dsp is still very important for stuff like auto tune and amazing sounding reverbs.
I saw this coming, I think it makes sense for Avid to reward those of us who are "avid" users this make Carbon more on par and competitive with Universal Audio's flagship Apollo interfaces along with their free LUNA DAW software which Barry perfectly summed up in this video. I'm now ready to pick up a new Carbon interface, this is what I was waiting for. My subscription expired in June and have not renewed because I was waiting for this type of promotion. I have been a Pro Tools user since Pro Tools 5 under the Digidesign branding. I work in both music and post so I'm not complaining, Thank's Avid for listening!
Great video Barry but If anyone's in any doubt about Carbon after seeing your vid then I can honestly say "don't be". It sounds fantastic and makes life so easier not having to wrestle with latency anymore. Like you I'm a committed Pro tools user. I'm also not a huge fan of Avid but have not looked back since getting into Carbon !!.
With a lot of companies we are not privy to the specifics of sales figures on individual products from companies like Avid. You are right, a lot of the post production houses are too busy to update or upgrade which means for the average movie project the post facility could wait until 3 to 5 years before carrying out any form of update. It does seem like the kind of fire sale move a company would make in order to shift physical products from expensive warehouse space. Personally, ever since avid started buying other companies their subscription strategy was doomed as it would seem they did not have a buffer of cash in the company to wait for the fruits of a subs business model.
Logic & Cubase they were never competing with Pro Tools really , not to mention FL and all the other DAWs. But Studio One and now Luna ooo yeah, that hurt for sure, so they better start treating people a bit better after so many years of insane loyalty.

I own a studio in NYC and have been in almost all the studios in the city not to mention all over the USA and some of the world. Almost every studio has both PT and LPX. Logic has always been a very close second. On the home recording market, Logic and Studio One are kings lol. Very good point about all the new DAWs taking a piece of PT don't forget about Reaper too! I get tons of projects from Reaper now!

@@matt_nyc_audioengineer I agree with you on LPX most of my clients are running LPX now. I see protools on the way down, in our segment of the industry so few use protools. LPX just has so much to offer and no subscription BS. Plus the tight integration with video, surround, etc at no extra cost it’s slowly changing the pro landscape. I have no idea about home studio scene.
I saw the first iteration of ProTools at AES NYC back in 1989. I don't know why, but I've never been a fan. But I do live in Denmark...expat 30 years now! Come on over, man we'll hook up! I love you humour. But you should only visit, you wouldn't like the income & VAT prices. 😉
Awesome video. Great of you to correct the record on the perpetual license. Carbon seems like a lot of overkill for my use case but I'm still interested in getting one. UA does a holiday sale where they throw in a satellite DSP box for free with purchase of an Apollo rack unit. I wonder if Avid will sweeten the offer with a bundle or something additional to match.
I like the idea of Carbon's DAW integration of plugins for low latency. But the predatory pricing and versioning scheme, plugins that expire, slowness to support new OS updates, and all the stuff they do that's just not consumer friendly-they are just not a company that the average musician or home studio person will ever benefit from dealing with. Big studios? Sure OK. Prosumers with $15,000+ to blow on HDX and MTRX? Sure. But having to pay $499 a year after you buy it just to get a bugfix to use it on the latest OS because you don't have a dedicated studio computer? Hell naw.
Interesting video. I agree with you in the fact that Avid are giving away Pro Tools Ultimate with carbon ( perpetual license as well ………...Wow!!). they must be in some trouble?. The fact is Carbon looks like it would run so well with Pro tools and be a totally integrated system is a great thing. The problem is that its just too expensive compared to UAD apollo interfaces which give you pretty much the same, apart from having to also use console alongside. I use UAD Apollo with Luna and it works really well......…..totally solid. The silly thing is I still prefer Pro tools and the work flow, Its hard to beat?. There are some great systems out there and I just wish that Avid would stop trying to grab as much money as possible when I'm sure that if Carbon was more reasonably priced we would all be happier, especially if you use pro tools...………..We live in hope AVID.
I have the old ProTools HD 10.38 with an external chassis housing 6 HD card with an old 2009 Mac Pro 8 core which I upgraded to a 5,1 12 core with a UAD card and I never run out of power. Even with 150 tracks session and tons of plugins native and TDM(with a 44.1kHz sample rate) If it ain't broke why upgrade? I rather spend the money on mic pre's or add more guitar and amps to my collection. I love ProTools but I also use Logic Pro 10, Cubase 10 and Ableton Live 9. For MIDI I like Logic and Cubase and even though ProTools MIDI is kind of weak, I still use ProTools because to me it's the best for audio editing so I put up with the lack of MIDI features. It has been really stable for me and I started with Pro Tools 5 mix cube. Instead of upgrading to HDX I purchase an SSL X Rack with 16 channel summing mixer plus 2 SSL eq's and 2 compressors.
Universal audio works for me. Great effectssssssss Very flat master out. Never any down time. Great support. I have a silver face and x8p and a library of u/ a plug ins . For example ( capital Records reverb ) can not get better then that etc.
It all went south when Apple bought Logic. Avid got mad and started putting all of its resources into Windows which at the end of the day just doesn't work as well (come at me lol). Ever since the magic was lost somehow.
I dont know alot about this stuff, I record drums at home, I have a behringer umc 1820, I can track with all my plugins on, now I dont monitor them because obviously I can hear my drums, but I guess IM just trying to understand what dsp and all that is, guess I better look it up , i felt lost during this haha
It’s been a year and I only watch this video today. I think that the first problem with the Carbon is the target. They marketed it for home studios. Who the hell has 4000€ to spend in an interface for a home studio?? And by releasing it they admit that DSP power is not anymore a go to thing if you consider nowadays computer power. The other thing they missed is surround capacities and a software like total mix. Why after buying a 4000€ interface should I spend 900€ minimum for a surround monitoring? To conclude, I was very close to go carbon but chose RME for a fraction of the price and more functionalities
@@BarryJohns I had no such thought. I just found your channel, while researching buying either a carbon with FREE PT ULTIMATE, or an Apollo x8 and using LUNA. I do plan on mixing in surround (hence asking for your knowledgeable prediction), and using heavy VI’s, and outboard midi rack synths/etc, and I adore the UAD EL-7 FATSO. I’m getting back into music production 8 years after my last radio hit, and these two options seem the most enticing.
They need to focus on improving their current interfaces and catching up with the rest of the world instead of rolling out new junk to overcharge for every few years
I would have bought Carbon if it had a digilink port so I could use my other gear... Why didn't they think about this? In order to use my HD io's I'd have to still have a hdx card.
I actually bought a carbon and sent it back. The Ethernet protocol is just not future proof and their history of stopping support for interfaces after just 4 or 5 years is gross. Also, the "plugin bundle" is only a year subscription, so there is a yearly cost hidden within Carbon. You get the perpetual PT licence, but the plugins are the trap. I need Ultimate for Audio-post for film, using multiple videos and surround is a must. But I'd prefer to just buy the perpetual and get a reliable interface. Im going with a UCX II RME interface or a Focusrite. Avid have simply been too greedy.
Rear view mirror failure - a thing common to a lot of ‘big’ companies when they get too full of themselves. I recall when Avid first came in and took over the video editing pro market (of which I was a part many moons ago) and they vitually owned off-line editing with their revolutionary non-linear editing software. Their pricing model and business plan comes from that era when there were only a handful of post-production houses scattered around (relatively speaking) and they could charge what they liked because they were the ‘next thing’ and the only game in town. It seems they have not bothered to pick their heads up and take a look at what’s been happening in the world for the past decade or two. And all this time, their market has been slipping steadily as new competitors show up to chip away at their share. Now, it could be too late if they can’t adjust quickly and move in a new direction. Sometimes that is more difficult than it appears for a variety of reasons but usually comes down to ‘follow the money’. Having said that, if they do manage to pull their heads out of their ass and do an about face, it could be very interesting dynamic going on in the prosumer market in the coming months and years.
I was priced out of the Pro-Tools world in the 90's .... jumped in with Studio One in 2015 and have never even considered PT or Avid. There ae so many other modern DAWs providing equivalent editing capabilities that Avid now has a real problem. Forever, they built the best mouse trap, but times have changed.
Carbon has been great so far. I paid 3500, and I get PT Ultimate. I have a UAD satellite. Im also knocked out the sound, And no dumb extra mixer overlay to deal with like all the rest.
Barry, actually Carbon has always came with a Pro Tools Standard license and 1 year of updates as well a few perpetual and subscription plugins. After 1 year if you don't buy the annual support/update plan, the Standard license will become a regular perpetual license. You just wont be able to update Pro Tools beyond the version that was available when your support plan lapsed unless you can find a reseller with an reinstatement plan for sale (Good luck with that next year). Also you forgot to mention that this incentive to buy Carbon includes a perpetual license for Auto-Tune Hybrid and this total offer is only good through September 15, 2021. So Carbon will not continue to include a perpetual license of Pro Tools Ultimate pass September 15. After that it's back to Pro Tools Standard as before.
BTW using plugins in their gui before it hits the daw.... DSP.. yep it's a digital signal processing that is being done on the audio so you can get those reverbs, eq's and compressor done before the daw's like anything Apollo and such. So people saying they don't need dsp but uses those products lol.. we'll you are using dsp. As he says later in the video
I am not sure what the future holds for me and avid , they just cancelled the HD interfaces… I have the avid I/o hdx system but not sure how long it I’ll be viable with all the changes going on.. DSP is not as necessary for home and project studio guys anymore as of 2023..I could have saved 11 k 5 years ago..oh well live and loose..I quest!
Sorry for my ignorance on Carbon in general but I thought it came with its own version of Pro Tools? I gave up on trying to find out if Avid had any plans to update it’s hardware and software path after its initial intro when they didn’t mention whether it would work with it’s controllers(like S3). Also wanted to know if it would work with Universal Audio’s UAD-2 dsp cards and UA plugins. Never heard if this would work either. Maybe Avid will release an updated video going over things like the Ultimate bone they’re tossing in here and a clearer path of what Carbon is capable of and who’s the target customer.
I wonder if its because they'd like to compete with UA/Luna. making protools ulti free with carbon gives bigger incentive to go with avid over UA. Unsure if it's that or a lack of sales.

Of course Carbon isn't selling well. 80% of people are using a Windows machine, and since Carbon uses standard's not supported on Windows. Not Making it work Universally was a STUPID mistake.
They’re just trying to corner the home studio market by giving you an interface that gives you everything UAD does plus enhances your processing power. M1 and a carbon you should be good to go for at least 2 decades... you can pay the same price foe a UAD interface and still need several satellites and you can’t process your native plugins utilizing UAD...
I would take Carbon/Brainworx over UAD Apollo/Plugins due to your main point, you expound still need more UAD DSP than you can get with an Apollo only.
Large companies struggling to meet the new frontier of home recording where there are simply no dollars coming in to offset the cost of hardware/software. I'm currently running a PT demo because a friend with a professional studio has to use it in order to appease clients. He asks me for technical support and I don't use PT. Now I understand how it works and I can more easily help him with technical issues and help him get going. The demo is fine to me - sounds good, decent workflow, etc. But, I'm never going to pay for it after the demo lapses. Way too expensive for what I am doing at home with Logic. Now, if Apple ever does pull the trigger on subscription pricing - I may have to find a replacement! I just want to record!
I bought Nuendo. I am a heavy Pro Tools user, but the features and PRICING has sparked me to at least give it a shot. I paid $799 for a cross grade from Pro Tools. I am coming from Pro Tools Ultimate. I did not purchase Nuendo because I dislike Pro Tools. I LOVE Pro Tools (I am worried I am not going to like Nuendo). Avid has destroyed the customer experience. They are much like the Democrat party. They got their hands on a fantastic thing, and has stained it's greatness, with greed.

It’s not even close. The Apollo is a powerful unit, mainly because of the DSP, it certainly was powerful in its day. That said, they’ve never been known for the best conversion, it’s always been “good enough” in it’s price range. It is not on the level of the Carbon interface.
It doesn't surprise me at all. First off, Avid has a HORRIBLE reputation with interfaces. I've owned 002s, 003s, various Mbox's, and have used many 192's and ALL of them have been headaches. Second, Avid's Carbon basically seems like a knock off of an Apollo, and I've been using Apollos now for 10 years and they're amazing. So why would I buy an interface that is more expensive than an Apollo, and is inarguably giving me less benefits than an Apollo does?
Well, it was a dumb move on their part for leaving off ThunderBolt and USB3.. Stupid! 1) Does the Carbon interface have Core Audio and Vst drivers. ? Most of us use more than one Daw! And, yes Luna are using Thunderbolt!
I agree on Thunderbolt and USB, another miss is SPDIF. The unit uses the AVB Ethernet protocol which is similar to Dante in how it works. Different protocols, but both networked Ethernet connectivity. The interface that covers everything is Focusrite 8Line and 16line which have Digilink, Thunderbolt, SPDIF, ADAT and Dante.
Avid hater, huh? I would call myself an Avid skeptic and a PT lover. I've tried, honestly tried to switch DAWs a few times. People cry Reaper but it just doesn't provide the things I need for fast editing or convenient composing. Studio One? Maybe, if I was only composing, and was committed to Windows. But my day job is dialogue editing. With and without video. After 26 years of daily PT use, I'd rather fight than switch (Barry's old enough to get that reference). I want Avid to succeed. I hate many of their decisions over the past decade or so. But I can't hate them. I'm still rooting for them to find their way into the 2020s and show everyone how it's done like Digidesign did in the 1990s. Some say I'm a dreamer. But I'm not the only one.
Similar here. 23 year dialogue editor and re-recmixer. I can see the value of Protools, but also see the alternatives, such as using Uad or even just an excellent digital mixer with a usb interface. X32 is 1500€, Wing 2600€. Luna simplifies things for Uad. RME is not sitting still. These solutions are merely a little less convenient. And then there are native systems, getting ever so much stronger. Not just the Ryzen 5000 series setups where RME,Uad,MOTU & many other Thunderbolt systems can run 32 sample buffer setups better and better for tracking, even with plugins. Just look at those Apple M1 systems coming up. Those systems will kill. Reaper already supports them natively. There are some of the reasons Avid may be getting nervous. Btw, I‘ve been editing ADR, dialogue and effects for seven years in Reaper, mixing for six. It supports EuCon too. I solve problems faster there, but I still love old Protools. Keep my perpetual license around for checks and trouble shooting of PT sessions. :)
That's not new, there was a time where Avid included Pro tools with TDM www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/PTCoreHD1--avid-pro-toolshd-1, and then With HDX back in 2012 www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/HDXHD2-HDxcore--avid-pro-tools-hd2-trade-in-upgrade-to-pro-toolshdx. So it's really nothing new, they just decided to do a bundle deal like they used to do when a new card or interface came out. They did the same with HD Native and the omni. Also.. 999$ to get back to the subscription vs a 4k system like carbon there's quite a bit of difference, if you're a small studio don't think you'd go for carbon to get your pro tools back up to date.
Here’s the difference, carbon is not an HD interface, it’s a native interface. Also avid stopped bundling Protools HD/ultimate quite a few years ago with their HDX cards. Everything‘s been à la carte for quite some time now. Even the link you provide, is a very old link, and hasn’t been available for years. Carbon when it was released came with Protools Native, so this is something brand new that Avid has never done before. This would be the equivalent of giving Protools HD/Ultimate with a 003. Trust me, go over to Avid’s DUC and you’ll see a lot of really upset people who bought carbon right away, who are not getting ProTools ultimate.
@@BarryJohns Yeas the links are old, that was the point I was making. They used to do it, so it's not something new. Carbon is an interface, as you would have noticed in my previous comment I mentioned interface / card (actually the other way around but anyways) And Carbon has integrated DSP (so no not native), basically it's a slightly lowered powered HDX card within the Carbon box with 8 dsp chips vs the 18 chips of a full HDX card (remember when they had previewed a thunderbolt interface with preamps that had an hdx integrated into it?), but where you can use the new hybrid engine right in the carbon box. Therefore it follows their previous giving when a new type of system came out. My only gripe which Avid already knows ( lol ) is the fact that they went avb instead of thunderbolt and thus stopped the pc world (including me) from getting it :D So in any case, as I was saying, nothing new under Avid's sky, they did the same in the past.

I contributed for well over a decade helping people as much as I can, but when I was critical of Avid’s Annual fee policy, they shut me out forever. Lol avid haven’t given you anything extra all they have done is you now have to give them £800 per year to keep you shiny new copy of perpetual ultimate up to date as opposed to the £200 you would have paid to keep your pro tools standard perpetual licence up to date
That is the truth! I don’t understand why other folks here haven’t mentioned this. Unless I’m missing something, you get a free PT ultimate perpetual license, but don’t get updates after 1 year unless you pay the subscription fee. That also applies to all the free plugins you get up front. After a year, all the free plugins, except for 55 mediocre ones of which none are compressors or limiters, disappear unless you pay the $799 annual fee (currently on sale for $399). Am I wrong?
It’s because avid is greedy snd they charge for everything and all their proprietary junk and their support is complete trash. I get burnt on how they do everything. They are greedy as hell.
The Apollo outside of its UAD DSP is like any other interface. It’s the DAW that determines what plugins can be used. That said, you can only run UAD Plugins on the onboard DSP Chips built into the Apollo.
The vast majority people don’t really need ultimate, as some of the features that come with it, their gear towards post production and things like that. The carbon works just the same with Protools negative. It’ll probably be a good thing in the end, because the annual cost to upgrade ultimate is $400 a year, compared to $200 a year I think they upgrade Native.
Pretty disgusted by AVID's greed. A few years back I got an Omni HD native and PT 11. That was before their subscription model. Then realized I had to fork out money for a year's subscription to PT ultimate, which is an utter ripoff. Long story short, selling it, and going for another interface (Not AVID) which doesn't require PT ultimate. I have friends in the music business who had similar experiences and abandoned their AVID gear, for much cheaper and just as good brands, without all the BS involved in owning AVID stuff. Trouble is I like working in PT because it's familiar. I use other DAWs too, like Logic for VI's, but still mix the final track in PT, because it's easy for me. My next step is to wean myself off PT, but still looking for something I like mixing with and it ain't Logic.
No man dsp IS dead. For universal audio it's just a dongle for a legacy way of piracy protection. Not doing really big sessions? Try an AMD 3950x or 5950x and get back to me. If you mean large I/O count? I'm doing 64 simultaneous I/Os via madi to converters at least as good as this thing. ProTools has existed because of being first on the scene, session compatibility, and people not knowing better for most of the last 25 years.
It's about realtime monitoring with less 2ms-3ms of latency. No current PC System/interface can achieve that through software monitoring in a big mixing session, when you're doing overdubs. You are right about not needing DSP for mixing though.
@@floriansimon2578 depends on your audio interface too, but ill tell you this, i can run 64 buffer size on a completely mixed session with tons of plugins on. I can even run 32 buffer size and ive even tested it to run at 16 samples buffer! The 5950x is no joke! Still im not a big proponent of tracking while monitoring though plugins, except maybe a little verb. I like to hear the real sound im getting and rather than compression on tracking, i learn where the vocal dynamic changes are and ride the preamp gain on the way in. Theres also a reverb monitoring trick ive been doing over 20 years that allows you to hardware monitor your dry but software monitor the verb only. Verb can and should be late anyway. I two identical verbs on auxes, one for live monitoring that has its predelay shortened by the latency amount. The real mix verb i switch to has its normal predelay. Still, software monitoring the normal way through 64 buffer size really is quick enough fo monitor for everything but the most intricate of nylon guitar parts. Tracking guitars through cabinet simulators I def understand the need for speed though. Does Uad even have that stuff though? I dont remember that being part of it. The key to pulling off such low latencies for me is a PCIe audio interface. Usb handles an average of high throughput but its not the same as PCie which is about as fast and conitinuous as you can get (till you can have a gen 4 pcie audio interface) im still using a motu 2408 mkiii (but with good converters) The very fastest would be an RME hammerfall Madi to something good, which I do all the time elsewhere. They use a thunderbolt to Madi Motu M64. It stays at 128 buffer most of tbe time and the studio owner guitar player only ever software monitors. Ppl do have different tolerances to latency.
In my opinion Avid missed the mark with Carbon. They should have made a two channel desktop version for about $1200. This would be an Apollo twin killer. I am unable to understand why Avid can’t see that the cost of entry for their DSP products is too high. The other thing is they need to offer one version of Pro Tools and charge $1000 for it.
To be fair, Carbon is $3999, UA Apollo 8p is $3699 only a $300 difference. Carbon has superior conversion and better preamps. You can also use much cheaper but just as good plugins via Brainworx vs UAD. That said, I agree the next thing should be a scaled down version to compete with UA’s tabletop units.
@@BarryJohns I agree thar Carbon is actually a fair price and getting it with the Ultimate License and autotune Hybrid is really a better deal vs UA. However you'll never be able to go above 16ch at 96k so not good if running full band tracking sessions or large analog mixes.
@@ezrashanti that’s true, that said, I’ve don’e detailed analysis and in my opinion there is no advantage of recording at 96k, none of the benefits, and there are some, will end up mattering by the time that session is on two track for streaming or whatever the end goal is.
@@BarryJohns I run 96k for lower latency through HDX or other dsp based cue systems, and find that some effects sound better and plugins with 2x only or no oversampling can benefit. Also run Trinnov ST2 room correction which maxes out at 96k and Acustica plugins (which can use 48k or 96k samples), so I find it to be a good balance between latency, cpu usage, and sound quality.

Well, you pay $4000 + tax for the interface might as well throw the Ultimate premanent license for free. Good entincement for those studios who can afford it, I guess. Anyway, Avid is playing catchup these days. All is fair in love, war, and economics.

I have been using Pro Tools for some 15 years, I see a lot of people using Ableton now, but me coming from the old 2" tape and digital multitrak machine background, I just don´t have any desire in switching to another system. About the latency you mentioned I have actually landed on the right solution for me to have Pro Tools run in sample accurate sync which is important to me. The trick is to have an audio track produce very good midi, instead of a midi track. Anyways, thanks for your videos.
I just bought my carbon because I am just a through and through pro tools user the editing is just unbeatable I had a ultimate license just for volume trim and when I saw this deal for the carbon I was sold I’ve been wanting a carbon and my main mixing plugins are plug-in alliance and most of my sessions are vocal sessions so it’s awesome to be able to have my vocals mixed while tracking but I really think this is a step towards avid making their own plugins like ua tbh
Because Carbon is priced so high, that you’d expect the most advanced Pro Tools version included. I was quite surpriced that it was’nt. Until now. Just a bit of ‘fairness’ - I guess.
Yea Carbon looks amazing - but not so much so that I'm going to get rid of my UAD interfaces to go to it. Just too expensive.

@@perhoier2881 100%. I made a commitment to Logic and native processing years ago and only recently switched to Cubase this year. ProTools still considered the final mix DAW of choice but I think those days are numbered when there is Nuendo + UAD2, and when budgets just aren't what they used to be.

I love the Steinberg interfaces where you get DSP in the inspector on the Daw.
I had an ax4t but it the inspector zero latency didn't work and I had to use the external software. Super underrated interface though.

Digital Mixers such as the StudioLive 32 allow zero latency recording with motorized faders, 4+ stereo effects, compression and EQ on every channel for half the price of the Carbon.
Yeah I got a Midas MR18 it sounds phenomenal. I haven't done a lot of tracking yet but so far it looks like a good solution for me.
I am a big UAD user. my computer is pretty high spec but I really do enjoy being able to not use any cpu to do real time tracking. I think dsp is still very important for stuff like auto tune and amazing sounding reverbs.
I saw this coming, I think it makes sense for Avid to reward those of us who are "avid" users this make Carbon more on par and competitive with Universal Audio's flagship Apollo interfaces along with their free LUNA DAW software which Barry perfectly summed up in this video. I'm now ready to pick up a new Carbon interface, this is what I was waiting for. My subscription expired in June and have not renewed because I was waiting for this type of promotion. I have been a Pro Tools user since Pro Tools 5 under the Digidesign branding. I work in both music and post so I'm not complaining, Thank's Avid for listening!
Great video Barry but If anyone's in any doubt about Carbon after seeing your vid then I can honestly say "don't be". It sounds fantastic and makes life so easier not having to wrestle with latency anymore. Like you I'm a committed Pro tools user. I'm also not a huge fan of Avid but have not looked back since getting into Carbon !!.
With a lot of companies we are not privy to the specifics of sales figures on individual products from companies like Avid. You are right, a lot of the post production houses are too busy to update or upgrade which means for the average movie project the post facility could wait until 3 to 5 years before carrying out any form of update. It does seem like the kind of fire sale move a company would make in order to shift physical products from expensive warehouse space.
Personally, ever since avid started buying other companies their subscription strategy was doomed as it would seem they did not have a buffer of cash in the company to wait for the fruits of a subs business model.
Logic & Cubase they were never competing with Pro Tools really , not to mention FL and all the other DAWs. But Studio One and now Luna ooo yeah, that hurt for sure, so they better start treating people a bit better after so many years of insane loyalty.
Not Cubase...but Nuendo its on another level.

I own a studio in NYC and have been in almost all the studios in the city not to mention all over the USA and some of the world. Almost every studio has both PT and LPX. Logic has always been a very close second. On the home recording market, Logic and Studio One are kings lol. Very good point about all the new DAWs taking a piece of PT don't forget about Reaper too! I get tons of projects from Reaper now!

@@matt_nyc_audioengineer I agree with you on LPX most of my clients are running LPX now. I see protools on the way down, in our segment of the industry so few use protools. LPX just has so much to offer and no subscription BS. Plus the tight integration with video, surround, etc at no extra cost it’s slowly changing the pro landscape. I have no idea about home studio scene.
I saw the first iteration of ProTools at AES NYC back in 1989. I don't know why, but I've never been a fan. But I do live in Denmark...expat 30 years now! Come on over, man we'll hook up! I love you humour.

Awesome video. Great of you to correct the record on the perpetual license. Carbon seems like a lot of overkill for my use case but I'm still interested in getting one. UA does a holiday sale where they throw in a satellite DSP box for free with purchase of an Apollo rack unit. I wonder if Avid will sweeten the offer with a bundle or something additional to match.

I like the idea of Carbon's DAW integration of plugins for low latency. But the predatory pricing and versioning scheme, plugins that expire, slowness to support new OS updates, and all the stuff they do that's just not consumer friendly-they are just not a company that the average musician or home studio person will ever benefit from dealing with. Big studios? Sure OK. Prosumers with $15,000+ to blow on HDX and MTRX? Sure.
But having to pay $499 a year after you buy it just to get a bugfix to use it on the latest OS because you don't have a dedicated studio computer? Hell naw.
Interesting video. I agree with you in the fact that Avid are giving away Pro Tools Ultimate with carbon ( perpetual license as well ………...Wow!!). they must be in some trouble?. The fact is Carbon looks like it would run so well with Pro tools and be a totally integrated system is a great thing. The problem is that its just too expensive compared to UAD apollo interfaces which give you pretty much the same, apart from having to also use console alongside. I use UAD Apollo with Luna and it works really well......…..totally solid. The silly thing is I still prefer Pro tools and the work flow, Its hard to beat?. There are some great systems out there and I just wish that Avid would stop trying to grab as much money as possible when I'm sure that if Carbon was more reasonably priced we would all be happier, especially if you use pro tools...………..We live in hope AVID.
I have the old ProTools HD 10.38 with an external chassis housing 6 HD card with an old 2009 Mac Pro 8 core which I upgraded to a 5,1 12 core with a UAD card and I never run out of power. Even with 150 tracks session and tons of plugins native and TDM(with a 44.1kHz sample rate) If it ain't broke why upgrade? I rather spend the money on mic pre's or add more guitar and amps to my collection. I love ProTools but I also use Logic Pro 10, Cubase 10 and Ableton Live 9. For MIDI I like Logic and Cubase and even though ProTools MIDI is kind of weak, I still use ProTools because to me it's the best for audio editing so I put up with the lack of MIDI features. It has been really stable for me and I started with Pro Tools 5 mix cube. Instead of upgrading to HDX I purchase an SSL X Rack with 16 channel summing mixer plus 2 SSL eq's and 2 compressors.
Universal audio works for me. Great effectssssssss Very flat master out. Never any down time. Great support. I have a silver face and x8p
and a library of u/ a plug ins . For example ( capital Records reverb ) can not get better then that etc.

It all went south when Apple bought Logic. Avid got mad and started putting all of its resources into Windows which at the end of the day just doesn't work as well (come at me lol). Ever since the magic was lost somehow.
I dont know alot about this stuff, I record drums at home, I have a behringer umc 1820, I can track with all my plugins on, now I dont monitor them because obviously I can hear my drums, but I guess IM just trying to understand what dsp and all that is, guess I better look it up , i felt lost during this haha

It’s been a year and I only watch this video today. I think that the first problem with the Carbon is the target. They marketed it for home studios. Who the hell has 4000€ to spend in an interface for a home studio?? And by releasing it they admit that DSP power is not anymore a go to thing if you consider nowadays computer power.
The other thing they missed is surround capacities and a software like total mix.
Why after buying a 4000€ interface should I spend 900€ minimum for a surround monitoring?
To conclude, I was very close to go carbon but chose RME for a fraction of the price and more functionalities

@@BarryJohns I had no such thought. I just found your channel, while researching buying either a carbon with FREE PT ULTIMATE, or an Apollo x8 and using LUNA.
I do plan on mixing in surround (hence asking for your knowledgeable prediction), and using heavy VI’s, and outboard midi rack synths/etc, and I adore the UAD EL-7 FATSO.
I’m getting back into music production 8 years after my last radio hit, and these two options seem the most enticing.
I bought Pro tools carbon becausei do video editing plus other stuff that requires no latency.
They need to focus on improving their current interfaces and catching up with the rest of the world instead of rolling out new junk to overcharge for every few years
I would have bought Carbon if it had a digilink port so I could use my other gear... Why didn't they think about this? In order to use my HD io's I'd have to still have a hdx card.
I actually bought a carbon and sent it back. The Ethernet protocol is just not future proof and their history of stopping support for interfaces after just 4 or 5 years is gross.
Also, the "plugin bundle" is only a year subscription, so there is a yearly cost hidden within Carbon. You get the perpetual PT licence, but the plugins are the trap.
I need Ultimate for Audio-post for film, using multiple videos and surround is a must. But I'd prefer to just buy the perpetual and get a reliable interface.
Im going with a UCX II RME interface or a Focusrite. Avid have simply been too greedy.
Carbon seems to be a great interface. It is going to be a slow starter as it is late for the modern DSP party
Rear view mirror failure - a thing common to a lot of ‘big’ companies when they get too full of themselves. I recall when Avid first came in and took over the video editing pro market (of which I was a part many moons ago) and they vitually owned off-line editing with their revolutionary non-linear editing software. Their pricing model and business plan comes from that era when there were only a handful of post-production houses scattered around (relatively speaking) and they could charge what they liked because they were the ‘next thing’ and the only game in town. It seems they have not bothered to pick their heads up and take a look at what’s been happening in the world for the past decade or two. And all this time, their market has been slipping steadily as new competitors show up to chip away at their share. Now, it could be too late if they can’t adjust quickly and move in a new direction. Sometimes that is more difficult than it appears for a variety of reasons but usually comes down to ‘follow the money’. Having said that, if they do manage to pull their heads out of their ass and do an about face, it could be very interesting dynamic going on in the prosumer market in the coming months and years.

I was priced out of the Pro-Tools world in the 90's .... jumped in with Studio One in 2015 and have never even considered PT or Avid. There ae so many other modern DAWs providing equivalent editing capabilities that Avid now has a real problem. Forever, they built the best mouse trap, but times have changed.
Carbon has been great so far. I paid 3500, and I get PT Ultimate. I have a UAD satellite. Im also knocked out the sound, And no dumb extra mixer overlay to deal with like all the rest.
I love my ProTools too!
Barry, actually Carbon has always came with a Pro Tools Standard license and 1 year of updates as well a few perpetual and subscription plugins. After 1 year if you don't buy the annual support/update plan, the Standard license will become a regular perpetual license. You just wont be able to update Pro Tools beyond the version that was available when your support plan lapsed unless you can find a reseller with an reinstatement plan for sale (Good luck with that next year).
Also you forgot to mention that this incentive to buy Carbon includes a perpetual license for Auto-Tune Hybrid and this total offer is only good through September 15, 2021. So Carbon will not continue to include a perpetual license of Pro Tools Ultimate pass September 15. After that it's back to Pro Tools Standard as before.
BTW using plugins in their gui before it hits the daw.... DSP.. yep it's a digital signal processing that is being done on the audio so you can get those reverbs, eq's and compressor done before the daw's like anything Apollo and such. So people saying they don't need dsp but uses those products lol.. we'll you are using dsp. As he says later in the video

I am not sure what the future holds for me and avid , they just cancelled the HD interfaces… I have the avid I/o hdx system but not sure how long it I’ll be viable with all the changes going on.. DSP is not as necessary for home and project studio guys anymore as of 2023..I could have saved 11 k 5 years ago..oh well live and loose..I quest!
Sorry for my ignorance on Carbon in general but I thought it came with its own version of Pro Tools? I gave up on trying to find out if Avid had any plans to update it’s hardware and software path after its initial intro when they didn’t mention whether it would work with it’s controllers(like S3). Also wanted to know if it would work with Universal Audio’s UAD-2 dsp cards and UA plugins. Never heard if this would work either. Maybe Avid will release an updated video going over things like the Ultimate bone they’re tossing in here and a clearer path of what Carbon is capable of and who’s the target customer.
I would like to upgrade my pro tools, but my plan expired, and there options are bullshit.

They’re just trying to corner the home studio market by giving you an interface that gives you everything UAD does plus enhances your processing power. M1 and a carbon you should be good to go for at least 2 decades... you can pay the same price foe a UAD interface and still need several satellites and you can’t process your native plugins utilizing UAD...
I would take Carbon/Brainworx over UAD Apollo/Plugins due to your main point, you expound still need more UAD DSP than you can get with an Apollo only.
Large companies struggling to meet the new frontier of home recording where there are simply no dollars coming in to offset the cost of hardware/software. I'm currently running a PT demo because a friend with a professional studio has to use it in order to appease clients. He asks me for technical support and I don't use PT. Now I understand how it works and I can more easily help him with technical issues and help him get going. The demo is fine to me - sounds good, decent workflow, etc. But, I'm never going to pay for it after the demo lapses. Way too expensive for what I am doing at home with Logic. Now, if Apple ever does pull the trigger on subscription pricing - I may have to find a replacement! I just want to record!
I bought Nuendo. I am a heavy Pro Tools user, but the features and PRICING has sparked me to at least give it a shot. I paid $799 for a cross grade from Pro Tools. I am coming from Pro Tools Ultimate. I did not purchase Nuendo because I dislike Pro Tools. I LOVE Pro Tools (I am worried I am not going to like Nuendo). Avid has destroyed the customer experience. They are much like the Democrat party. They got their hands on a fantastic thing, and has stained it's greatness, with greed.

It’s not even close. The Apollo is a powerful unit, mainly because of the DSP, it certainly was powerful in its day. That said, they’ve never been known for the best conversion, it’s always been “good enough” in it’s price range.
It is not on the level of the Carbon interface.
It doesn't surprise me at all. First off, Avid has a HORRIBLE reputation with interfaces. I've owned 002s, 003s, various Mbox's, and have used many 192's and ALL of them have been headaches. Second, Avid's Carbon basically seems like a knock off of an Apollo, and I've been using Apollos now for 10 years and they're amazing. So why would I buy an interface that is more expensive than an Apollo, and is inarguably giving me less benefits than an Apollo does?
Avid and Reason Studios. The two that forgot about innovating, and finding catching up isn't the way. Oh, and pro tools is priced like Lamborghini.

1) Does the Carbon interface have Core Audio and Vst drivers. ? Most of us use more than one Daw! And, yes Luna are using Thunderbolt!
I agree on Thunderbolt and USB, another miss is SPDIF. The unit uses the AVB Ethernet protocol which is similar to Dante in how it works. Different protocols, but both networked Ethernet connectivity. The interface that covers everything is Focusrite 8Line and 16line which have Digilink, Thunderbolt, SPDIF, ADAT and Dante.

Avid hater, huh? I would call myself an Avid skeptic and a PT lover. I've tried, honestly tried to switch DAWs a few times. People cry Reaper but it just doesn't provide the things I need for fast editing or convenient composing. Studio One? Maybe, if I was only composing, and was committed to Windows. But my day job is dialogue editing. With and without video. After 26 years of daily PT use, I'd rather fight than switch (Barry's old enough to get that reference). I want Avid to succeed. I hate many of their decisions over the past decade or so. But I can't hate them. I'm still rooting for them to find their way into the 2020s and show everyone how it's done like Digidesign did in the 1990s. Some say I'm a dreamer. But I'm not the only one.

Similar here. 23 year dialogue editor and re-recmixer. I can see the value of Protools, but also see the alternatives, such as using Uad or even just an excellent digital mixer with a usb interface. X32 is 1500€, Wing 2600€. Luna simplifies things for Uad. RME is not sitting still. These solutions are merely a little less convenient. And then there are native systems, getting ever so much stronger. Not just the Ryzen 5000 series setups where RME,Uad,MOTU & many other Thunderbolt systems can run 32 sample buffer setups better and better for tracking, even with plugins. Just look at those Apple M1 systems coming up. Those systems will kill. Reaper already supports them natively.
There are some of the reasons Avid may be getting nervous.
Btw, I‘ve been editing ADR, dialogue and effects for seven years in Reaper, mixing for six. It supports EuCon too. I solve problems faster there, but I still love old Protools. Keep my perpetual license around for checks and trouble shooting of PT sessions. :)
That's not new, there was a time where Avid included Pro tools with TDM www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/PTCoreHD1--avid-pro-toolshd-1, and then With HDX back in 2012 www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/HDXHD2-HDxcore--avid-pro-tools-hd2-trade-in-upgrade-to-pro-toolshdx. So it's really nothing new, they just decided to do a bundle deal like they used to do when a new card or interface came out. They did the same with HD Native and the omni. Also.. 999$ to get back to the subscription vs a 4k system like carbon there's quite a bit of difference, if you're a small studio don't think you'd go for carbon to get your pro tools back up to date.
Here’s the difference, carbon is not an HD interface, it’s a native interface. Also avid stopped bundling Protools HD/ultimate quite a few years ago with their HDX cards. Everything‘s been à la carte for quite some time now. Even the link you provide, is a very old link, and hasn’t been available for years.
Carbon when it was released came with Protools Native, so this is something brand new that Avid has never done before. This would be the equivalent of giving Protools HD/Ultimate with a 003.
Trust me, go over to Avid’s DUC and you’ll see a lot of really upset people who bought carbon right away, who are not getting ProTools ultimate.
@@BarryJohns Yeas the links are old, that was the point I was making. They used to do it, so it's not something new. Carbon is an interface, as you would have noticed in my previous comment I mentioned interface / card (actually the other way around but anyways) And Carbon has integrated DSP (so no not native), basically it's a slightly lowered powered HDX card within the Carbon box with 8 dsp chips vs the 18 chips of a full HDX card (remember when they had previewed a thunderbolt interface with preamps that had an hdx integrated into it?), but where you can use the new hybrid engine right in the carbon box. Therefore it follows their previous giving when a new type of system came out. My only gripe which Avid already knows ( lol ) is the fact that they went avb instead of thunderbolt and thus stopped the pc world (including me) from getting it :D So in any case, as I was saying, nothing new under Avid's sky, they did the same in the past.

That is the truth! I don’t understand why other folks here haven’t mentioned this. Unless I’m missing something, you get a free PT ultimate perpetual license, but don’t get updates after 1 year unless you pay the subscription fee. That also applies to all the free plugins you get up front. After a year, all the free plugins, except for 55 mediocre ones of which none are compressors or limiters, disappear unless you pay the $799 annual fee (currently on sale for $399). Am I wrong?

It’s because avid is greedy snd they charge for everything and all their proprietary junk and their support is complete trash. I get burnt on how they do everything. They are greedy as hell.
Can the Apollo devices work with all VSTs or are they exclusively linked to UAD plugins?
The Apollo outside of its UAD DSP is like any other interface. It’s the DAW that determines what plugins can be used. That said, you can only run UAD Plugins on the onboard DSP Chips built into the Apollo.
I see AVID ended the free perpetual ULTIMATE with new Carbons.
I got all excited when I saw free PTU & free UVI FALCON 2 with new Carbons.
The vast majority people don’t really need ultimate, as some of the features that come with it, their gear towards post production and things like that. The carbon works just the same with Protools negative. It’ll probably be a good thing in the end, because the annual cost to upgrade ultimate is $400 a year, compared to $200 a year I think they upgrade Native.
I guess Avid is including the PT Ultimate perpetual license again...

Pretty disgusted by AVID's greed. A few years back I got an Omni HD native and PT 11. That was before their subscription model. Then realized I had to fork out money for a year's subscription to PT ultimate, which is an utter ripoff. Long story short, selling it, and going for another interface (Not AVID) which doesn't require PT ultimate. I have friends in the music business who had similar experiences and abandoned their AVID gear, for much cheaper and just as good brands, without all the BS involved in owning AVID stuff. Trouble is I like working in PT because it's familiar. I use other DAWs too, like Logic for VI's, but still mix the final track in PT, because it's easy for me. My next step is to wean myself off PT, but still looking for something I like mixing with and it ain't Logic.
No man dsp IS dead. For universal audio it's just a dongle for a legacy way of piracy protection. Not doing really big sessions? Try an AMD 3950x or 5950x and get back to me. If you mean large I/O count? I'm doing 64 simultaneous I/Os via madi to converters at least as good as this thing. ProTools has existed because of being first on the scene, session compatibility, and people not knowing better for most of the last 25 years.
It's about realtime monitoring with less 2ms-3ms of latency. No current PC System/interface can achieve that through software monitoring in a big mixing session, when you're doing overdubs.
You are right about not needing DSP for mixing though.
@@floriansimon2578 depends on your audio interface too, but ill tell you this, i can run 64 buffer size on a completely mixed session with tons of plugins on. I can even run 32 buffer size and ive even tested it to run at 16 samples buffer! The 5950x is no joke!
Still im not a big proponent of tracking while monitoring though plugins, except maybe a little verb. I like to hear the real sound im getting and rather than compression on tracking, i learn where the vocal dynamic changes are and ride the preamp gain on the way in. Theres also a reverb monitoring trick ive been doing over 20 years that allows you to hardware monitor your dry but software monitor the verb only. Verb can and should be late anyway. I two identical verbs on auxes, one for live monitoring that has its predelay shortened by the latency amount. The real mix verb i switch to has its normal predelay. Still, software monitoring the normal way through 64 buffer size really is quick enough fo monitor for everything but the most intricate of nylon guitar parts. Tracking guitars through cabinet simulators I def understand the need for speed though. Does Uad even have that stuff though? I dont remember that being part of it.
The key to pulling off such low latencies for me is a PCIe audio interface. Usb handles an average of high throughput but its not the same as PCie which is about as fast and conitinuous as you can get (till you can have a gen 4 pcie audio interface) im still using a motu 2408 mkiii (but with good converters) The very fastest would be an RME hammerfall Madi to something good, which I do all the time elsewhere. They use a thunderbolt to Madi Motu M64. It stays at 128 buffer most of tbe time and the studio owner guitar player only ever
software monitors. Ppl do have different tolerances to latency.
In my opinion Avid missed the mark with Carbon. They should have made a two channel desktop version for about $1200. This would be an Apollo twin killer. I am unable to understand why Avid can’t see that the cost of entry for their DSP products is too high.
The other thing is they need to offer one version of Pro Tools and charge $1000 for it.
To be fair, Carbon is $3999, UA Apollo 8p is $3699 only a $300 difference. Carbon has superior conversion and better preamps. You can also use much cheaper but just as good plugins via Brainworx vs UAD.
That said, I agree the next thing should be a scaled down version to compete with UA’s tabletop units.
@@BarryJohns I agree thar Carbon is actually a fair price and getting it with the Ultimate License and autotune Hybrid is really a better deal vs UA. However you'll never be able to go above 16ch at 96k so not good if running full band tracking sessions or large analog mixes.
@@ezrashanti that’s true, that said, I’ve don’e detailed analysis and in my opinion there is no advantage of recording at 96k, none of the benefits, and there are some, will end up mattering by the time that session is on two track for streaming or whatever the end goal is.
@@BarryJohns I run 96k for lower latency through HDX or other dsp based cue systems, and find that some effects sound better and plugins with 2x only or no oversampling can benefit. Also run Trinnov ST2 room correction which maxes out at 96k and Acustica plugins (which can use 48k or 96k samples), so I find it to be a good balance between latency, cpu usage, and sound quality.
Hi Barry, can you tell me what the ProTools Native is compared to The HD or HDX ver..? I started with ver 5 back in the old days and kept updating until ver 12 perpetual license. Thanks for all you do!
Native is all the features of HD minus any TDM/HDX DSP, you are using your computers power.

Well, you pay $4000 + tax for the interface might as well throw the Ultimate premanent license for free. Good entincement for those studios who can afford it, I guess. Anyway, Avid is playing catchup these days. All is fair in love, war, and economics.
Avids business practise is whats gonna kill them if they dont make a 180. If so thats very sad and not god for the industry.
Better give your money to charity.. I mean why keep being robbed by Avid? Many many options out there that are superior in all senses.
