Because they are now the standard in the industry.
In your studio at home, it's no big deal.

You can't say there's no reason at all. Some people like Pro Tools - I liked it myself when I used it. Plus, switching DAWs is not the easiest thing. Some studios are invested into (infested with?) the ecosystem. I'm not a large studio owner but I've heard their arguments for staying with PT and it seems reasonable.
Like VideoArchiveGuy said, Media Composer is widely-used apparently. There's probably integration between the two applications that some might find convenient.
For future reference, 'none' and 'never' are usually false arguments. I can understand if you're outraged or befuddled but emotion doesn't play into logic.

I've been on Studio One for the past 10 years now after comming off 5 years of Cakewalk Sonar. I mean I have even used and tried the early form of S1 when it was called Kristal Audio Engine back in the day long before Presonus acquired Kristal Labs. I just love the work flow of that's unmatched. I use it every day professionally for my client's as a multi-faceted Producer. I had a hand in Protools but the workflow seems sluggish with extra steps. Terrible when comes to composing tracks too as you have to add a stupid click track in each session. PT is like a diminishing return asset. Very few Producers uses PT since most DAWs are cross compatible with each other that support the AAF file format. I can literally load Protools sessions into Studio One. I run my whole Hybrid mixing rig with S1 using Pipeline XT.

Agree with you there. But Logic unfortunately is far from perfect either. I've been on the edge more than 1 time to switch DAW since logic has some serious bugs (which Apple still does not seem to be able to fix after years) which can literally drive you to insanity, and if you have ever talked with Logic support, you don't exactly get the feeling that the person in the other end of the phone is an audio engineer.

@@JJDPROMEDIAPRODUCTION Maybe not, but they can surely slow you down alot. Sorry to hurt hour feelings but here is a small list…Examples: 1. It has happened more than one time that Logics pitch correction suddenly adds unexplainable artifacts(even if it didn’t a day ago). I found the pitch correction in logic so unreliable that I simply cannot use it for any paid work with a deadline.
      2. The External Instruments plugin is extremely frustrating. If you try to send a midi-signal to an external device (like an analog synth) it will play back in sync, but if you want to record it, it plays out of sync(apple support has no explanation for the problem). The same can happen if you want to inject analog prossesing (like compressors etc.)
      3. Midi-editor suddenly becomes unresponsive. (If you press a recorded midi-note it doesn’t play back the instrument. And any editing done does not affect the recorded midi)
      4. Sudden CPU peaks on one of the cores. This has been a looooong issue with Logic. But every now and then during project playback, one of the CPU - cores without explanation spikes through the roof. Countless of tutorials has been made in attempts to solve this issue(along with numerous post in different forums), but none of them seem to fully explain why this happens nor have any good solution to prevent it from happening (but nonetheless extremely frustrating if you have paying clients in your studio excited to hear the final mix of their record. It makes you feel….well… somewhat less proffesional)
Theres is also thing I absolutely love about Logic. And yes, the bugs does not stop me from finishing my projects , but sometimes you have to go huge sideways to finish the projects (because some strange bug occured)

I'm not really familiar with this channel - you just popped into my feed due to YT AI. But I watched your video. I have to applaud your tenacity and perseverance in sticking with Pro Tools for so long. As soon as they started demanding a subscription, that was the end for me. I had a bad taste in my mouth from Avid for years over the HD vs. Regular Pro Tools, and the ridiculous prices for hardware and software they wanted. But the subscription model was the final straw. I went to Nuendo and have NEVER been happier with my choice of DAW. Just try getting into Dolby Atmos without the primo version of PT, costing thousands more than Nuendo when all is said and done! Anyway, you gave them a good faith run. They are the ones who are destroying their base and forcing customers to jump ship.
I hope more than anything after seeing your passion about this that you have removed PT from your life and moved on to a product that actually does care about training, supporting and communicating honestly with their customers. There are many others out there. We need more big houses and producers and engineers to finally make big declarations of divorce from the Avid universe, which is outdated, outmoded, closed-in and out of touch with the market and their customers. I hope your next video is about how you did exactly that, and how happy you are with your new DAW.

As a composer I was a long time user of Avid's Sibelius music notation scoring software, until Avid bought Sibelius and I had to upgrade my systems to Windows 10; after which upgrades switched from legacy to annual subscription. Needless to say, I no longer use any of Avid's products because I don't appreciate being financially raped for products I originally paid a lot of money for. Avid's disdain for its customers stinks. There are now many free open source software products on the market that perform just as well for no money at all. Avid drives its customers to the competition. So be it!

Sold my digidesign hardware and moved to another DAW (doesnt matter which, like you said, this is not about "which tool should you use") exactly because of this kind of stuff. Shortly thereafter NED goes down and Digidesign start its ascent. I'll never forget that day, obviously.
I've never been a ProTools fan and can't really explain why. Maybe because I was spoiled by access to the original DAW from NED, but for years (1998-2015) I was a LogicPro user and later a certified trainer. Switched over to Studio One about 5 years ago and have not looked back. PreSonus' team led by Arnd Kaiser are killin' it in my opinion.
My final opinion - Unless you're working in the "industrial" audio/film post production houses, it doesn't matter if it's not ProTools. DAW's now days are what works best for ones workflow. The DAW doesn't create your sound, you do.

Barry - like you, I'm a PT's user. I know it inside and out which makes it hard to change. I have workflow established and I'm so quick in tracking, editing, and mixing. So, with all of the productions I have, it's difficult to switch to a new DAW because of the temporary "slow down" that will inevitably come. That said, nothing will change until we make it change.
I will be investing in a new interface (using Apollo silver now and LOVE it). I was seriously considering the Carbon and upping to Ultimate. But, I can get Logic for $200 (and most of the Nashville producers I work with now are using Logic). I can get Luna free since I already own a thunderbolt interface. I believe that some former Avid developers now work for UA which explains Luna's similar workflow and hot keys to Protools.
Luna has a little ways to go to get to Protools level, but it's getting there. I'm hearing GREAT things about Studio One. So, with Logic, S1, Luna, and a plethora of other choices, why would I continue to invest in a company that won't accept input of its users, constantly upsets its customers with horrible pricing practices, and quite frankly isn't offering anything that other DAWs cannot also offer.
Barry, you are making a difference. You've inspired me to carve out time to learn another DAW or two. If Forest and other producers I work with can do it, so can I.
Avid just lost a sale of Carbon because of this video. So, I hope they apologize as you've asked for.

That's sad, many software companies are going that route... companies that deal with technology have a green light on putting out products with flaws, what ever happened to the lemon law... clear indication that corporations run the world. I used pro tools for 6 months, never completed a single track because of issues, I traded all that for Motu and everything just worked...

Hi Barry, what you’re saying makes a lot of sense and it’s a shame when companies don’t listen to their most loyal users. I recently got sucked into the monthly scheme as the new 2021 PT was a big upgrade from my PT 2012. I was able to somehow justify it as there was a deal for 90-100£ a year. That being said, I was asked to pay 35£ for a ticket in order to call Avid tech support before I made the upgrade. I don’t know about you, but I’ve never had to pay 35£ to call a company. I work as a reviewer in a magazine and contact companies on a daily basis. I’ve never been asked to pay in order to call tech support. Especially from a company with Avid’s resources.

Change is always a pain in the ass when your invested so heavily in a product and company. Really your just going to have to use your wallet power and go with another company. I'm so glad I started with Cubase as a DAW although I do have an Avid Eleven Rack but of course had to go to forums to get help.

  • @jrlee243

I used pro tools for my first DAW. At the time avid was the front runner. But I just got frustrated with it. And probably most of it was my fault not knowing how to use it to it's full potential. I never really loved working in a studio, I loved live Audio. It was a challenge, being thrown in to a different venue night after night figuring out how is me and my team can make this sound good. But a bit off topic. So I started trying different DAW. And one that clicked with me was mixcraft. I know it's not at the four front of audio technology. But the simplicity of it just grabbed me. Then I got in to logic pro and I currently use that now. But sometimes I catch myself wanting to go back to mixcraft at times. Am I alone in this? Using a " inferior" DAW? Not just mixcraft but other programs that are deemed inferior.

Big companies don't necessarily care, because, generally, the decision making is done by employees, and they mostly care only about everything looking clean on a report and their pay check. If a company goes under, they'll just go work somewhere else. For a company to make meaningful decisions, a decision maker has to be someone who is committed to the product, who takes the risk and has repercussions for bad decisions. Otherwise it all depends on the honesty of the employee, and we're all different.
Take, for example, Steve Jobs, he was smart and took part in every decision regarding the product. He was the one to approve the keyboard layout on the iPad. Not just anyone, not some designer / manager / product owner, but Steve himself, he didn't consider it an unimportant thing not worthy of his precious CEO time, assuming that people are just going to buy it. No, he was involved in every step of the process and made sure the product is good.
If you want stuff taken seriously, then talk to the stakeholders, the ones that really lose money if a company fails. And if they want it the wrong way, so be it, move on and let it fail.
I do not know anything about Avid. This is just my observation about human nature, no one is going to put more effort than one has to.

After graduation - years later- I purchased Avid's Protools - this was the platform on which I has been instructed. Good Lord! If - just supposing - I had a few clients lined up, deposits secured - and then they would have to get a phone call from me , like, "I'm sorry, but by platform is experiencing some issues today - I'll have to get back with you at some later time/date." Yeah I heard great stuff about Neundo. I have been playing around with a trial version as I plan on buying it for Dolby Atmos mixing. With PT you have to buy all the extra B.S required RMU, MADI interface and the Dolby Mastering Suite that cost thousands of dollars when Nuendo does Atmos mixing entirely natively in the box without the required 3 party hardware and software esp if you are on a Windows PC. I use Studio One Pro as my primary and only DAW for Music Production, Recording, Editing & Mixing. Its like a more polished version of Cubase given it was originally developed by former Steinberg Developers but has all the Protools like features.

Barry, I have Avid HD Hardware that I still use because I spent so much money on it. But... I gave up on Avid 8 or 9 years ago. I changed my workflow with a new DAW at that time and almost 10 years later I honestly don't miss Pro Tools at all. When I do freelance stuff and I have to use a Pro Tools system, I'm still fast at it and I'm happy to do what I need to do for the client but my studio is Pro Tools free in general. What's important about that is my studio is also STRESS FREE in general. Like you I'm not anti Pro Tools. I'm anti Avid. Avid = Stress and I don't need it. I love my Avid hardware. It sounds great but it turns out I'm happier using it with another DAW. If I ran my Business like Avid I'd be out of business.

Tracktor, Reason, Bitwi, Studio one…..among many other, No reason to use any of that expensive ones that i have not dudes that they are great, Ableton, Cubase….fortunately for all that talent people there are around that wanted improve their skills and thanks to people as Barry who shares his knowledge in places like RUclips , they does not need today be millionaires or make their studies in Berkley with the professional standard to do what they love! I was a user way back when Digidesign sold the audio interface "Session 8".
Got off of it when they sold out to Avid, and issued PT that didn't work with my still functioning hardware.
Lucky for me it worked quite well with other DAWs which, btw, long ago surpassed the functionality and features of PT, and cost less than 10% of PT.
I will never use subscription-model apps in my studio, whether audio, video, or even office.
Also, any companies practicing subscription-model should be forbidden by law to use the term "purchase", since we never actually own our "purchase", as defined by centuries of common commerce law.

@@levondarratt787 I purchased an 08 iMac for $150 5-6 years ago and didn't even upgrade it. I can run several synth tracks, with recorded tracks, effects, etc before it starts to run out of juice. The current price for Logic is $199. My interface was more then that. I'd say the lack of down time trying to figure out why it's not working and the ease of set up and use, and the fact that you can pick up a used poorly configured Mac that will still run this very well, makes it incredibly inexpensive.

Agree with so much there. But like you, I love Pro Tools! It’s so very disappointing that Avid doesn’t seem to care about it’s users.
Talking DUC, I’m rarely there, but when I am, if I think I have something positive to offer in the way of helping others, I will.
Sadly, I’ve been flamed and shut down by a “gang” of moderators who were slamming Avid in response to me trying to help someone come up with a workaround to an issue caused by an Avid limitation. They were literally saying get a new DAW! When I questioned that kind of behaviour from a Mod on an Avid forum, it was pointed out that he was kind of a big deal, (so credits apparently give him the right not to help others effectively or the company he’s supposed to help, and to say whatever he feels like!) and I was told that’s the way things are around here.
I’ve never been back since. In fact, I’ve found the Facebook group a much better place for help and to be able to provide help for others. So I’m very surprised that they’ve banned you Barry.. there are some other Mods that should have been banned instead I think!

Reaper does EVERYTHING Pro Tools and more, much more if you're willing to go there with it some of which is very experimental. BTW. I am an audio pro and have produced records since the mid-1980's using analogue machines. Reaper is only $60 and the worldwide community for Reaper is HUGE. I got no problems continuing to find work with a Reaper setup. My clients don't care because they're not paying for the software. They pay for my skills and trust I can make their music sound great.

Really enjoyed this video and thanks for making it! I just started using Pro Tools after trying a bunch of other DAWs. It started for me as an itch I wanted to scratch and I was surprised that I just really enjoyed using it for the music I write. I had read all the arguments about how every other DAW is more powerful in some way or another and having used some of those others I agree they do a lot more. What I've realized for me though was that where I'm at in my musical journey and the music I like to write didn't need those features yet I would end up fiddling with them to be part of my writing and get bogged down with that instead of just writing music and being happy. We can only hope that AVID as a company will get some people in a position of power that realize they can do better and start making changes to reflect that.

Probably never going Pro Tools, especially with these kind of stories in mind. However, what makes people who are sick of Avid bad support drawn to Logic? It's not like Apple is going to answer any emails or phone calls any time soon. Features that have been requested for years and years are still absent. Something wrong with Logic? Can only rely on third party forums and troubleshoots that 9 out of 10 times won't solve anything, cause they definitely won't ever put up a hotline or swear to answer emails. Batch export manager? No, they'll rather give you a new GUI on one of the stock plugins that you replaced 5 years ago. Visibility manager? How about a new synth preset that sounds like a choir of farts instead. A way to configure track numbers manually? No, but you can now share Logic projects via Mail Drop! A way to search while browsing your plugins withtout resorting to third party solutions? Maybe a bit smoother adjustment of pre-delay in the Chroma reverb plugin will satisfy you.
In all fairness, they do a massive amount of bug fixes down to extremely detailed problems which 99% of their users would never know about, so props to them for that. And they obviously do implement features at the same detailed level, listening to their users. But they get so many things and professional demands fundementally wrong. I'm a Logic user, but the day that I'm absolutely confident I can do the same in Cubase without much readjusting, no more Logic for me. The free updates aren't good enough that they really can compete with Cubases paid updates

Not really. Don't necessary have to use the equipment provided by the studio because a lot of guys esp Producers these days just bring their mobile rig with them. Producer Oak Felder is mostly mobile that rents out a studio from time to time that brings his backpack with everywhere he goes. He just brings in his Macbook Pro running Logic Pro X and his interface and goes to work. He was tracking Brandy Norwood in Logic on his laptop. Most of the Weeknd records were produced and recorded in Ableton live by his Producer that is also mostly mobile.
