    I keep wondering why Emotiva gets such a bad rap on their Gen 3 XPA amps. They seem to make decent amps. The 65 watt channels worry me as not enough.

      They're great amps but yes the 65 watts isn't enough for bigger speakers.

    I have the Pioneer VSX-LX505 and was thinking about going to an external amp to drive the speakers but to be perfectly honest it's plenty loud as it is I don't have a treated room like some home theater enthusiasts do it's just a simple regular room and the sound coming out of the receiver is plenty loud and detailed. I just feel like it would be a waste of money for me. I could be wrong but why would you need external amp if your AVR runs the speakers just fine at normal volumes.

    Great news, thx 4 that. If using 9 channels you can customize it with 5 channels full power and 2 smaller stereo ones for atmos/heights and its the same prize. I guess that would be perfect then? XLR of any use when amp is not fully balanced? I would start with the Maranz 7012 as Processor and could go for a prepro later. Otherwise i could take a 5 channel Amp and use the 7012 for the 4 height channels?

    I'm running an Emotiva XPA 9 Gen 3 for my 5.2.4 setup. I love it. Same power rating as the XPA 11, but I believe 300 watts to the five main channels (4 ohm speakers) and 100 watts to the four height channels. Perfect for what I have at the moment.

    I enjoy your reviews. I have to disagree with 11 channels in one box. Just like Yamaha's 11 channel power amp? That power amp from Yamaha for home cinema has received terrible reviews! For what? Lack of power!!! I have a Rotel RB 1590 driving my left & right channels at 350 p/ch. I have a Rotel RMB 1585 5 x 200 8 ohms and 5 x 300 @ 4 ohms. I have to replace my Pioneer receiver with a pre amp. I'll be getting to that soon. I'm driving my amps through the receiver at the moment. I've seen you review these 2 amps. I love'em!!! I own a Pioneer sc-LX901 receiver (145W/ch) and I bought an EMOTIVA 6 channel XPA amplifier because some 140W/ch receiver onwers praised the Emotiva SPA amp. I had quite high expectations. However, after installing the amplifier and comparing them for more than 2 hours, (both bi-amping Front & center with Paradigm studio 60 & cc-690) there was no difference - dynamics, clarity, details, and volume except sound color. The Pioneer is a D3 amp, so it's a little more vivid and bright, and the Emotiva is an AB amp so it's warmer and smoother. Both have great sound. I preferred the D3 amp sound, so I returned the Emotiva.

  • @jasonhowe1697

    I wonder if it could be turnef into a 14 channel effcts amp though the downside i don't thnk emotiva has come out with sub processor to really cater for a secondary solution to height and width it its own breal out setting
    following the original yamaha specification it would of been plausible to create the 21.4/6/8 system..
    7 mains and upyo 14 effect to cater for height and wides..
    unless you are playing with upto 18 foot ceilings I do not think you are going to get adequate sound for height and wides to be applicable for use you are using the 4ohm loadout to make heights and wides so they cant be heard within the 50-100 watt range..
    you are likely under powering your surrounds in this case..

I Would like to use the Emotiva DRA 450watts x3 for LCR and XPA in a 9ch configuration 5 mono modules and 2 stereo for 4 mono for surrounds (one spare) 2 stereo for heights. My concern is can I get away with less power in this configuration or do I need a third 4 channel XPA for heights? Thanks mate love your channel number 1.

    • @therealshanelee
      @therealshanelee  5 лет назад

      It’ll depend on how large your room is the type of speakers your running and at what level you normally listen too. I don’t have the largest room but my atmos speakers are 4ohms and a pretty decent size. Even crossed at 80hz I can hear a substantial difference between 65watts and the normal 120 watts I run with. Remember always better to have as much headroom as you can get. Don’t skimp now because who knows what you’ll be upgrading too in the future.

    • @Cybertron-cs7sk
      @Cybertron-cs7sk 5 лет назад

      Thanks Shane, I figured you would say that, you're never one to cut important corners. I guess I just needed to be reassured on having to purchase a third amp of equal power for the heights. DRA 3ch LCR & 2X XPA 5ch for 8-SRch. I'm choosing the 5ch version not 4ch in case I need 2 equal powered ch in the future. I will purchase the stereo modules for the heights for now and add the third amp when I upgrade the heights. My room is about same as yours, medium size. Also l live in Australia 🇦🇺 and 3d bluray's are available on titles not available in USA 🇺🇸 might help your needs when looking for a title hard to locate.

    I'm curious, if you have a reciever that can drive say, a 11.2 like my Marantz SR7012, why have a external amp? Not to sound dumb just curious

    • @uscfroadie
      @uscfroadie 5 лет назад +4

      Sergei Andrew I have that same receiver. It will not drive 11 channels since it only has amplification for 9. I have the front three channels and two of the Atmos channels running off of a five channel Outlaw 5000 amplifier. The reason for an amplifier is far more dynamic punch and overall cleaner sound at louder volumes (challenging scenes). AVR’s in the SR7012 class only deliver about 50 W or so per channel when all channels are driven.

    • @bach917
      @bach917 5 лет назад +2

      I'm also using the SR7012 and use external amp 200x2 for fronts and 125x3 for center and side surrounds. SR7012 is poweringsurround backs and 4 atmos. There is a difference.

    • @styner3
      @styner3 5 лет назад +1

      @Sergei, I get what your saying for a long time I wondered why get a amp until I got one. My speakers can handle 150 watts continuous power and 300 max but my receiver was probably only giving them 80 watts all channels powered. I'm sure your receiver sounds loud enough for you but it's working harder and that takes away from the electronics that actually makes the sound. Less strain means more power for the electronics = sound is much better. At a minimum try a amp to power your front three, I think you'll be amazed.

      I would respectfully disagree with the "more dynamics and punch" observations. NOT TRUE in my experience I have a Marantz SR7011 and an Emotiva XPA-5. I can't tell a difference in the sound quality between the two. I bought the Emotiva because the Marantz was overheating and I needed more channels of amplification. And... 65 watts of amplification is fine for surrounds and atmos; there's a lot of "fear" and "snobbery" in the hobby! In any case, the speakers are the most important components.

    I just ordered this amp after researching it. I have a top of the line Marantz in me garage with a nice 7 channel amp. I wanted to move that system into another location inside. I also matched this amp with the emotiva.com/products/rmc-1l I know it is overkill for a 600 sf garage but I spend a lot of time in there and want something that reaches my soul when I am getting away from it all. My 7.1 speakers are Golden Ear in ceiling and sounded nice with the Marantz. Btw I’m running two big subs.

      How is your Emotiva working out? Considering the XPA-7 but concerned about reliability.
