Why do so many parasites, especially helminths aka flatworms, jump around as many as THREE hosts to complete their life cycle? Why isn't one host good enough for them? We'll find out why parasites evolve complex life cycles that don't seem to make any sense.

I read the title as “this particular parasite needs to ruin three particular lives”
Also another great advantage about ending the life cycle with a water bird is that they regularly fly to other bodies of water and any body of water worth its salt in going to have snails and minnow like fish.

As interesting as life cycles like this are, the more fascinating question for me is "How did things evolve to this state?"
Also, why cooking your food sufficiently is so incredibly important.
Basically its survival of the fittest !

I'm genuinely surprised the parasite that causes toxoplasmosis didn't come up once. I would think that would be the multi-host parasite most familiar to viewers.
Glad to see parasites getting some recognition! As a Parasitologist, their complex life cycles makes working on them a pain. I thought id bring up something this video missed - for flatworms, the stages in the snails are actually regarded as an adult stage, however this stage asexually reproduces, making thousands, to tens of thousands, to millions of offspring, that then go on to infect the next host in the cycle. Thats one of the main advantages in trematode (flatworm) life cycles, they have a massive amplification event part way through
You have my dream job, honestly. I've always wanted to be a parasitologist, but I feel like since I'm already 22 it's too late for me to do college

Parasite that ruins three lives. Yes, everyone has one of these in their family.
Watching this channel's other parasite videos, I was wondering this exact thing!
Nice lods watching here
"This parasite needs to ruin 3 hosts' lives"
My ex: those are rookie numbers
can’t believe all the comments are about exes instead of landlords
Guess because one can move - it's just a contract.
The exes people talk about here usually lure you in and mess with your brain (and bank account, job, ed, health, reputation, ... you name it), and spread from there to other hosts like friends, business partners, your family (usually got theirs before you), their own (because common) kids, ...
So the latter sounds more like a parasite. Former like dog poo. It smells, it's inconvenient, sticks for a while, but they stay where they are when you go on with your journey.
PS: yes, had both.

Hey look, this episode is about me
you said more than 3 host is pretty rare which parasite have more than 3 hosts?
Trump. Isn't grifting millions the same as a parasite with millions of hosts?.. 🤔
I'd say mosquitoes r a parasite. And I'm not sure how long their lifespan is off the top of my head, but I'd imagine it's definitely long enough to have more than 3 hosts.
Same with leeches, ticks, and other multi-celled parasites.
@@CiderDragonfly Quoting from askentomologists...
“Please settle a family argument- Is a mosquito a parasite?”
It’s complex and depends on how you define it! A straight answer may seem more satisfying, but there is more nuance to the answer. Believe it or not, but there are so many definitions of a “parasite.” I won’t go into them today, but there are quite a few.
If you’re to define that a parasite needs to live on its host, then a mosquito is not a parasite and is thus a predator that feeds on the blood of a host. This is the answer I’d go with. However, species of mosquitoes such as Aedes aegypti do carry pathogenic viruses (such as the yellow fever virus) which can be seen as parasites. These need a host to survive and reproduce. Further, something like the yellow fever virus can be thought of as a pathogen because it causes disease.
A good definition of a parasite is an organism which lives in or on another living organism, obtaining from its organic nutriment, usually having a negative influence on the fitness of its host, and commonly exhibiting some degree of adaptive modification (Price 1975).

Just curious. If you cook a fish before eating, that kills the parasites, right? Right?

Okay but parasites are causing very bad symptoms which can make the host really sick. Suffering. We dont want parasites who do that.
Haha, Humans are parasitizing entire Earth.
All these creatures changing in to something else, yet some people won’t believe we will too on the other side of eternity.
Only diffirence is that there is no other side , they do all this in "this" side of eternity.
!!!
Thought this was about my ex for a minute
All that effort the parasite is doing when it could just evole to do something easier
Easier, like the life of a human?
Strangely enough, this IS the easier option. Free living involves having to find mates, defend against predators, forage, digest food, deal with changes in temperature, moisture, salinity, acidity, etc. Compared to all that mess, even having to deal with 3 hosts is an improvement. Parasites outsource all that metabolically expensive and complicated stuff onto their host, which lets them devote more effort towards making more baby parasites.
In fact, parasitism is the most popular lifestyle on Earth. Most species make living by mooching off of others.
Tragically, good enough to reproduce is good enough for evolution!
... is that scientific name pronounced yoo-kih-ploor-kiss? lul
Reminds me of the US government
Am I that parasite? But I’ve probably ruined more lives
I find this to be harder to achieve than the video/researchers give credit for. As far as I understand, the parasite can't be in just any host, so it could go through 2/3 of its life but still unable to reproduce because even if it gets consumed, it might not have been by the right animal.
More importantly though, most living things can only tolerate a single climate. The organism has to be _very_ robust to go from unfiltered water to the relative inferno of a bird (birds have a higher core temperature than humans). Not to mention, I figure bigger hosts have more advanced immune systems.
Last but not least, should the parasite be eaten by anything with teeth, it better hope to not get crushed or chopped by them. That's why before modern sterilization processes, people were advised to thoroughly chew their ham, because then you're more likely to kill any parasites living within it. Not sure how much that actually worked but logically it makes sense.

Depending on your definition of parasite, Human beings have that record beat by a few hundred times. Every wooden item in your home in some animal life ruined or other.
Parasite typically means harming a host without killing it. If ur referring to things like wood, food, plant and animal products that aren't food, then I'd say those aren't parasites. U would be better off saying humans r parasites from their mothers in the womb and then all the toxic types of ppl that u can find every other comment talking about.
Warm blooded animals are not warmer it means they keep a steady temperature thats what benefitial to a simple organism not extra heat
