    I know it's been three + years since you shot this. But my parents never supported my filmmaking dreams like your mom did in this video, they never had the time... Amazing. I hope she lasts you many many years.

    Why I liked this...I wanted to do this type of thing myself when I was a kid in the early 60's. Those cameras were very expensive and my family wasn't rich. I had to settle for a Brownie 8mm. Anyway, I wanted to make silent movies features me and the neighborhood kids. I wish I had done it. Your video brought back those old feelings, thanks.

    Hi film has more Latitude than digital cameras and a light meter would help you to work out your exposures. I work for a University in the film and Television department so if you have any question i might be able to answer them for you. We are one of the few who still teach Film in Australia.

    • @DJEntroP
      @DJEntroP 6 лет назад

      it doesnt have more latitude... red monstro vv has 17+ stops of dynamic range, film tops out at like 12 stops on the absolute maximum, if not less. even my sony a7iii does 14 stops in video... not trying to be condescending but please stop spreading false information, it's just like these people saying vinyl has more dynamic range than cd.

    I got a scoopic 16M because it is electric and you can record a whole reel in one go. I also saved a large amount of money on developing costs by modifying a 35mm developing tank to take 5 feet of 16mm film just to test if the camera works. Would have cost £30 to have a test reel developed.

  • @skycarl

    Food for thought Rin, you can build reflection and diffusion boxes and umbrellas. They give you way better control with your lighting no matter where you are shooting.

      +skycarl this film would need a crazy amount of light though, so id rather just stuck to daylight for now.

    I'm into stills photography (35mm) but I've never done anything with movie cameras so this was exciting. That flare around 15:15 was a cool effect. Oh and your terminology usually seems fine. For the example in this video I would just say 'this lens has a maximum aperture of f/2.8'.

    just a thought, if you wanted to add some really old but good sounding audio for voice-ect, you could pick up an old 1940s wire recorder fairly cheap that would do the job well. they record onto a thin stainless steel wire that's in a spool. really easy to operate and fix if necessary. only 4 tubes and capacitors are an easy fix if there bad. they come with a crystal mic and they are built like a tank. just a thought if you need another project.

      The usual period sound recorder would be something like a Uher 4000 series reel to reel , which is capable of high quality . The tapes can be edited by cutting and splicing , just like the film

    What is the black artifact that occasionally appears at the top of frame? Does this camera have a pull down claw issue?

    • @RinoaL
      @RinoaL  4 года назад +1

      no that is an issue with my digitizing process, i built a machine that runs the projector at extremely slow speed, and then a mechanical switch triggers my camera to click, but the timing sometimes would get out of wack. the film itself is prestine, its just my digitizer made from duck tape and random electrics lol. you can find my video on it if i recall.

    • @diskkun4120
      @diskkun4120 4 года назад

      @@RinoaL I've heard that in order to sync sound up with the film you need special motors to attach to the camera, since the camera is spring-wound and therefore inaccurate in terms of speed. Did you have to augment the speed of the video in some parts in order for the sound to match up?

    • @RinoaL
      @RinoaL  4 года назад +1

      it was more accurate that my iphone 5c's video syncing. if i recall it ended up being something like 3% over speed, but it was consistent so i just changed the speed to what looked to work in editing. its really not a big deal.

    Hey Rinoa, how did you get your shot properly exposed without using a light meter? Thanks for the video, it's a great resource. I've been obsessed with the Bolex 16mm ever since I shot with it a number of years back. I've been thinking about buying one again, they are just too cool.

    • @RinoaL
      @RinoaL  6 лет назад +1

      i used a light meter, but i used the one on my cellphone. iphones and whatnot have light sensors for the camera module, and so there are some apps out there that do that for you. although several times i have just gone by eye and it turned out ok.

    When the spring if fully wound will it run the entire 100 ft ? I'm guessing not as I often see journalists winding their camera while filming in all the old movies.

    • @RinoaL
      @RinoaL  7 лет назад

      +OverUnity7734 no, only like 25 feet per winding

    • @derekheeps1244
      @derekheeps1244 3 года назад +1

      The camera will typically run for around 30 seconds on a single wind of the clockwork motor ( depending on chosen FPS ) . Later models can accept electric motors which bolt on to the side , give sound sync capability , and will run an entire reel .

      There are differences: I have an H16 REX and the later H16 REX4 which has a bigger , brighter finder . While either finder can be used for focussing before you shoot ; you can also attach a non reflex finder to the left side of the camera - this , while not looking through the lens , is much easier to use for framing a shot , and allows you to close the reflex finder while shooting , to prevent any light entering the prism if you don’t have your eye over the finder . Non reflex finders are readily available on auction sites and adjust to match the focal lengths of your lenses . Although I have two cameras , I just have the one finder which hooks onto the film door on the left side of the camera . It gives a much bigger and brighter view which for practical purposes is easier to use most of the time - the exception being if you have a subject moving towards or away from the camera and you need to follow focus , then you really need to use the reflex finder ( and rehearse the shot a few times rather than waste expensive film )

    • @RinoaL
      @RinoaL  7 лет назад

      +mndean i dont think thats right.

    • @mndean5652
      @mndean5652 7 лет назад

      f/stops assume ideal 100% light transmission. No lens can reach that due to reflectivity mainly from glass/air surfaces, the main offenders being older lenses with no coatings or even single coatings. That's why professional cine lensmakers used the T/stop, which tells the light transmission of the lens.

    • @derekheeps1244
      @derekheeps1244 3 года назад

      @mndean - the Bolex was originally made for the amateur market , hence lenses tended to be calibrated in f stops ; while there is truth in what you say ; especially re DOF , metering then setting the aperture will still give good exposure .
