Jenny when I decided to buy my first sewing machine from the Viking Sewing Gallery six years ago I had no idea how to quilt or cut fabrics. I got on RUclips to see how I could do my new hobby and there you were. I have watched all your episodes and you my sweet friend taught me how to quilt. My mama was a quilter and dress maker for our family. I was born in 1964 so I knew it was a must for women to sew. My sweet mama tried to get me interested in sewing but I loved playing in the dirt more. I love to grow vegetables and flowers. My precious mom passed away in 1995 at the age of 55 due to breast cancer. My teacher was no longer here and I was 31 years old, lost and broken from her passing. She would be proud today to see my beautiful quilts and dresses. Thank you so much for being my role model and helping to guide me in the right direction. I too have a odd disposition with rulers and reading them. I have to see you do it first and then I can follow along. Your Triple plays are so much enjoyed. You and your girls are the best of the best. I so appreciate all of you!!
Jenny, I just want to say thank you. Sewing should be fun and relaxing. There is so much stress in the world. Quilts don't have to be perfect, just comfy and cozy. I really like the block and quilt you created. Thank you for being real and down to earth.
Exactly. A couple years ago i brought a quilt to my long arm quilter and she suggested i put it in a show. I said “I appreciate it, but no thank you. My quilts are utilitarian - made to be cuddly and loved”. This is a hobby and i do it for fun, not a frustration.
Jenny…I previously gave up on quilting because I could not get it sewn PERFECTLY. I have now proudly made and given three of your patterned quilts without worrying about some boo boos. Thank you for encouraging this wonderful tradition of “the home sewn and imperfect quilt.” I am a happy quilter!!
I am beg/int quilter and have been watching you for awhile. Thank you girls for teaching us. Mine are *far*from perfect. But the receivers are delighted to have them. I have even received outgrown baby clothes and been asked to make medium sized baby quilts that the parents have as a reminder of their child and then can be passed down to their child when they have children of their own as a generational quilt. Those I leave a white patch on the back for names/dates to be added as passed down. Again, many thanks.
Great! Be careful you will be addicted. If you can collect small scraps, you must watch videos on “crumb “ quilts..most fun you will ever have sewing quilt tops. It’s sad that beginners can’t do crumb quilts because you need years of collecting those scraps and beginners don’t have that stash to work with. If you haven’t tried crumbs yet, (Jenny did do a tutorial) but reply back and I’ll tell you whose tutorial I liked best.(KH)
@@Thepiecemaker hi! I get excited and go on and on too much about this..but I first learned by watching Darlene Michaud (5 yrs ago video) learning the ideas. I love the simplicity of a utilitarian quilt, and this one totally fits the bill. As soon as Jenny mentioned that the 5” squares might be a smidge too small, I thought “that’s going to stress me out. I am going to cut my squares from yardage. If they’re 5.5”, I’ll get to keep all my points and not worry!” I have no problem doing a bit of arithmetic. I’ll need 1.5yards of background fabric to cut out 6 Width-of-Fabric strips 5.5” wide (each strip yields 7 squares 5.5”x5.5”) plus 8 strips 2.5” wide for the inner border. Done! Love the idea of centering a panel into the backing, it’s like having two quilts in one! And this very cute fabric is perfect for a picnic quilt. Can’t wait to make this one. Jenny, all I can say is that your tutorials about quilting have taught me far more in life than just quilting ... Over the years (and I've been with you from the very beginning!), you've provided me with words to live by. I was raised with a lot of "perfectionism" and gosh, does that just suck the life and fun out of so many things -- quilting included! It's not to say to be sloppy or cut corners, but rather to just make the best you can of what you've got -- even if that means fabric cut slightly imperfectly! :-) And, "Finished is better than perfect!!" You've become a dear voice in my life and I can't tell you how thankful I am to "have been able to meet you" -- even if across the internet airwaves. Biggest hugs to you. @MissouriQuiltCo
Thank you, Jenny, for your relaxed attitude towards quilt making. I read that it was the practice of many of our ancestors to purposely include a mistake in every quilt made because none of us are perfect, so our quilts shouldn't be either. Love that outlook of enjoying the process and not getting uptight about the mistakes. Eleanor Burns always says about small mistakes, "Hang em high and let em fly!"

Love the tips for not losing the points on the blocks and especially the ones for the backing - and how to line up the strips and panel for the long armed - very good to know!
I love how you keep it real. You show us that if the seams are a little off- its not a huge deal and it won;t matter in the overall project. Thank you for continuing to show us awesome tutorials!

It's definitely my "happy place". My time to be creative, and challenge myself while making beautiful colors come together to be enjoyed for years to come. Thank y'all sooooo much! 😘🤗
I love that Jenny shows how things don't have to be perfect. As a new quilter, I try so hard and still end up with less-than-perfect cutting/blocks. This took a lot of the worry out of it for me. And this quilt is so cheery, love the fabric.
I so love watching you help us validate "being creative" without complicated patterns... I'm sewing as fast as i can at 76! So much to use up from DD's when you first hit the scene.... i am determined to` not leave it all behind! Oh and good job mentioning "the point lining up to the center of the 4 patch"... that's my style... Love you Jenny!
Yes, I thoroughly enjoyed this one!! It’s perfect for my 10” scrap pieces. Thank you also for starting to insert the facial dot when you do leave the camera to show us what you’re doing. And the back is darling! ❤️ Happy quilting and stay cool my quilty friend! 🧵
I know your trying to sell coordinate layer cakes but with some of these quilts of late the would be so perfect as scrappy stash busters. A lot of us collect leftover 2.5 inch squares and this would be a great way to use them with other leftovers. It would even be a great triple play if you each did a pattern only using stash scraps that were not crumbs but normal sized scraps.
I love the idea of a picnic quilt! First you can practice on those points if that is important to you and also practice a scant quarter inch seam. Best of all you can throw it on the ground and have a fun time!! ❤it
Love this quilt. Also, I never thought of using a panel on the back. Brilliant! I have a number of panels I don’t know what to do with. Will look at putting them on the back of some of my quilts. There is something about labeling a quilt a picnic quilt. It really does give permission to get it dirty. Many thanks for all your wise advice.
Great quilt! This is one I will have to make. I’m one of those who would start with 5 1/2” squares. When cutting the side strips I would cut each one slightly wider then square up to the correct size. I’d also sew the triangles with the 4 patch on top to help me not to stretch the bias of the triangle. As you can tell, I’m one who needs all the forgiveness a block has to offer. 😂
A couple of months ago I made a quilt that has huge 19 inch blocks that are set on point. Since I had 6 blocks left over after completing the top, I used 5 of them in the backing. I bordered each of them and then staggered them on the back. I added more wider borders around the outside of the blocks in different colors, so it's sort of color blocked. The entire quilt was challenging to make, but it's all ready for me to quilt on my home machine. I love to try different techniques when making quilts and if a family member falls in love with it, I usually gift that quilt to them. I really like this picnic quilt, so I need to make one!
Thanks for reminding us to allow yourself to enjoy quilting and not be total perfectionists. I love the simplicity of this quilt. It is just darling and the fabric you used is really cute. Thanks for the great video!!
Jenny you are so cute! When you were showing the nest your seams on the 4 patch the back of your head blocked the camera. And we couldn't see the area you were talking about. Lol 😂 love you❤!
Such a great design-and quick and easy! I love the idea of using a panel for the back. I’ve just added it to my bucket list. Thank you for your many great tips. Stay well! Muskoka ON 🇨🇦
This is the most perfect Christmas gift for couples. I have several friends who will get this as a gift. Thank you so much for great inspiring ideas! I have already purchased the fabric and pattern.
I have been quilting for several years now and most of my quilts are made for specific people for specific occasions. My baby quilts are usually the colors/theme of the nursery, the label on the back gives the baby's full name, date of birth, time of birth, height and weight. All my quilts are labeled on the back with the name of the receipent and what the occasion was and dated and with my name. My quilts are not perfect, they are to be loved and cuddled and kept as a memory of me. I tell my grandgirls that when I am no longer here, take those quilts and wrap up in them when you feel you need a hug from Gram. If someone isn't happy with the quilt being perfect - then they don't need it. I have never had one returned. I do all my own FMQ and sometimes the lines aren't quite straight of spaced just right, but who cares, it will be loved just the same instead of hidden in a closet for fear it may get ruined. happy quilting everyone!!

A lot of us collect leftover 2.5 inch squares and this would be a great way to use them with other leftovers. It would even be a great triple play if you each did a pattern only using stash scraps that were not crumbs but normal sized scraps.
I agree. Use scraps and don't be so matchy, matchy. We can do that on our own. I did that with her Goodnight Irene pattern last week, and it was fun.
I love so many things about this tutorial: the fabrics, the oops', Jenny (of course) and so much more!
That’s so thoughtful of you Jamie, Thanks for your positive review,How are you and how’s the weather over there?
I love the idea of a picnic quilt! First you can practice on those points if that is important to you and also practice a scant quarter inch seam. Best of all you can throw it on the ground and have a fun time!! ❤it
Thank you for the free pattern. Always enjoy watching your videos.
Great quilt!!
Jenny, I love that panel! so beautiful, I have learned so much from your Missouri star videos Thank You for all you do!
Perfect for a scrappy quilt top. ❤
Hi Jenny, I love the fabric, such beautiful colours. Lovely quilt, thank you 🥰

Muy lindo trabajo, gracias por compartir, saludos.
Love the Picnic quilt, and the panel on the back is a great idea. Thanks for sharing. 👍❤️😊
Beautiful quilt
Will be one of my faves
Lovely lovely little quilt!
A very comfy pattern! And that panel is adorable!
That panel goes perfectly with the quilt. I just recently used a panel to help back one of my quilts - works great! Love the quilt, another great job.
Beautiful picnic blanket - I’ll need to make some for our grown adults in our family for them to use with the grandkids!
Another winner, Jenny!
What a great, great idea for a layer cake 😊 And of course, LOVE the panel!!
Such a great design-and quick and easy! I love the idea of using a panel for the back. I’ve just added it to my bucket list. Thank you for your many great tips.
Stay well!

Just make the four patch a little smaller..like 2 1/4 instead of 21/2 inch, then everything will fit ! Thanks Jenny !
Such a cute quilt! Sew easy and fast! Also for your scant 1/4" move your needle to the right 2 clicks.
You can’t move your needle on a straight stitch only machine. But you can on others😊
Wondering if I cut the 5" squares into 5 1/4" squares would it not be as likely I'd cut off the points?? I love this quilt, can't wait to make it.🥰
Beautiful quilt and a fantastic inspiration! Way to go Jenny! 😘🧵🪡
I love the primary colors of this quilt.
Such a fun quilt.
That’s so thoughtful of you Dorothy, Thanks for your positive review,How are you and how’s the weather over there?
This is the most perfect Christmas gift for couples. I have several friends who will get this as a gift. Thank you so much for great inspiring ideas! I have already purchased the fabric and pattern.
Another winner Jenny! Love it!
I love this Jenny! Thank you!
We don’t really picnic in Florida, but I do love this quilt. So simple, but adorable. The backing is beautiful too. Love how you used the panel.
Take it to the coast and make it your Beach Quilt!!
@@HRHDMKYT Could definitely do that. Thanks.
