  • Ukraine's border with Belarus is seeing a troubling military build-up. Western intelligence agencies say Russian soldiers and weapons systems are ready and waiting in Belarus to open a new front against Ukraine - something that would stretch Kyiv's forces considerably. DW’s Nick Connolly went to the border region near Chernihiv to see for himself.

The first line in the Belarusian state anthem is: "We Belarusians are peaceful people". As a Belarusian myself I have never supported this anthem and our current political regime, but it's impossible to describe all feeling in my soul towards the war and the role of Belarus in it.
After 2020 protests Belarusians were on the edge of fight for democracy in the world, but after 24-02-2022 we became pariahs in the club with aggressor. I think it is our price for lost fight in August 2020.

Belarus is democratic, the "critics" in NATO and the EU do not doubt that either. They are merely unhappy with the Belarusian electorate because no candidate will win who will turn Belarus into a playground for foreign interests. Those who believe the EU and NATO are interested in the welfare of the Belarusian people should look at the conditions in their own countries. Belarus certainly does not need to take moral guidance from the butchers of Korea, Vietnam, Yugoslavia, Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, etc., nor from their colonial history. Open your eyes!

A deployment of Russian troops on another front around the Ukraine-Belarus border could happen, but just as a distracting tactic to force ukranian forces to split, just like Ukraine hopes to do with a possible southern counteroffensive. Moreover I think Belarus could only get a justification to send some of its forces if a Ukranian missile mistakenly kills civilians inside Belarus, which is unlikely unless Russia opens a new Belarusian border offensive like the report hinted, even so it would only justify a limited increase of military cooperation with the Russian army.

DW makes same mistake as many other news outlets, that belaruz army is not fighting in Ukraine, it does not mean that belaruz is NOT at war with Ukraine. On 24th of February ruzzia has invaded Ukraine from belaruz territory, as well several rockets were shot from belaruz into Kyiv in early days of war. This is de-facto definition of aggression i.e. belaruz has not declared war (nor did ruzzia), but they are de-facto at war. Whenever actual army enter Ukraine it does not matter anymore, so why say "if belaruz joins the war?" - NO belaruz and Ukraine are already at war!
    "Definition of Aggression
General Assembly resolution 3314 (XXIX), Article 3:
"Any of the following acts, regardless of a declaration of war, shall, subject to and in accordance with the provisions of article 2, qualify as an act of aggression:

    (f) The action of a State in allowing its territory, which it has placed at the disposal of another State, to be used by that other State for perpetrating an act of aggression against a third State;"

Most of the mobilization on the Belarusian border are Russian troops placed there to hold Ukrainian forces in place at Kiev, stretching them as Russia makes the final push in Donesk. It's the same feint they pulled at the beginning on Kiev but this time around they've learned from their mistake that they didn't actually have to move within firing range near Kiev to make it work. They just have to make the news of their presence on the border we'll know to keep large swaths of Ukrainian forces locked at Kiev. War is fluid....stay tactically rigid and you will definitely lose.
