  • Photorealism in video games is right around the corner... but is that really a good thing?
With titles such as Grand Theft Auto VI, Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra and Death Stranding 2 pushing the boundaries of next-generation systems to look as realistic as possible, I think it's a good time to ask what's going to happen once we finally have games that look like real life... 🤔

    Awesome video man!
I've never before thought about what happens when we "achieve" photorealism in games, but I think the parallel to art history is really accurate. We see it already today, games that focus on more stylized and abstract interpretations of both visuals and mechanics. I do think, however, that there will always be a space for photorealistic games, since they offer a sort of escapism for players to be or do things in a realistic world that they could not in real life.

before i've reached far into the video. I thought i could drop a thought i've always had about photo realism. That while, yes, photo realism in art is so incredibly impressive one sometimes loses individual ideas and interpritations of a view for the sake of copying exactly what one sees, one loses the character of the artist. However in ideo games, i must say that problem isn't exacftly present except for the human models now and then when they just motion capture someone and the only thing different about them is their outfit.

When I saw this video in my feed I was impressed by the quality from a channel of this size!
Would 've liked for your to go a little more in-depth as you go over most of the topics quite fast, but it kept me entertained so I'd love to see you grow!

@@cuffly_ I think that's just confidence in your own work, man. Once you have your audience interested and you have good information on a topic most people who are there to watch a video essay will not click off. Most video essays nowadays are sometimes up to an hour long, sometimes even longer. If the topic is interesting and your storytelling is good, people will watch it.

thats true haha. every time i watch a video essay i’m impressed how engaging they are for their whole runtime. while i’m pretty confident in the stuff i put out here, i know i can always improve in some way. that’s what keeps me motivated :D
ill take that approach from now on, my next video of this caliber will need more explaining and diving into specific topics anyway. thanks again for the feedback!

Great video. I always thought videogames as an artistic medium were getting to that point, glad to find someone who thinks the same

Every art style has it's place, all that matters to me is that people don't see realism as mandatory.
Which sadly, many do. If the game doesn't look like RDR2 or the latest cod game, it's so ugly they can't play it.

"graphics are temporary, art style is forever"
Being a PC player, I avoid photorealism at all cost. First of all for a personal point of view, i don't think it add value, since instead on focussing on what's matter, a lot of effort went to work on usless things. also as you said, photorealism tend to age very quickly. And all that effort to make something that WILL hinder the performance of the game ( console have it better since usualy games are taylored for them).
Also, from a creative perspective, photorealism is just easy and boring. AAA Games feels like they all look the same since forever. Graphics are a selling point for me, it will sell me a game. But only if the art direction is something special, and i feel like i'm not the only one.
Like all art things : We find a new medium, we perfect it until it look/feel real, then we realise that while its impressive, art is not about technicality (hence we bail to anything more interesting)

The production quality is insane, but i feel like the writing could be better. You tend to meander, and your points aren't as focused as they could be. The whole video can be boiled down to "This is how every art form evolves". I don't think it's entirely unreasonable to make the point you made, but it's rather stale.
Besides, in the video you didn't address how the need for photorealism in paintings sprung to life a whole new art form - photography. For decades photography was just "lazy painting", where few would realise the potential, and challenges of the medium. But paintings persisted, and now the two coexist. Same with books and movies, live music performances and radio. You can draw a lot of these parallels easily. I don't think striving for photorealism in gaming is particularly curious.
I also feel that the "crunch culture" point was a bit shoe-horned in. I don't think pursuing graphical fidelity is the root cause of burnout and the deterioration of quality in the AAA gaming industry. It's a product of late stage capitalism, the way to maximize profit, and appeal to as wide an audience as possible. You even touched on this in your video.
I do have to say that while i might not agree with the points you make, the video was *incredibly easy to watch*. Your positive attitude is radiating from my screen, and you make a mark of someone that knows what they're doing. I wish you the best, and i hope your content grows!

yup, the writing could’ve been a little more tight this time around haha
but still, thank you for the amazing feedback!
i briefly considered mentioning photography and how it evolved, though ultimately i left it out of the script as i didn’t want to deviate from the main topic too much. there are also way more parallels that could be made, and you’re right! its just that after my first video, i’m a tad more careful with going really in-depth about things, and i now see it as a balancing act of not boring the viewer, making sense and communicating a point, and being at least somewhat entertaining on top of all of that :D
so an oversimplification here and there might sometimes come as a result.
but i think i’m gonna change that with my next big upload, and work on both the storytelling aspect, as well as the amount of info i have in my video. and i’m definitely keeping this comment in mind for things later down the line! if there’s a thing i love, it’s constructive criticism 🙏
all the best to you too!
