  • In Week 9 of our 14-week Striper Migration Report series, OTW's Assistant Editor Matt Haeffner catches up with surfcaster and OTW Contributor Steve Gallant on the status of the migration on Massachusetts' North Shore. Then, we check in with owner of Red Top Sporting Goods, AJ Coots, to discuss the status of the migration in and around the Cape Cod Canal. Matt and Steve talk about the importance of herring in the estuaries north of Boston, how to present a big bait to stripers in the rivers and salt marshes, and when to transition from fishing the backwaters to the ocean front. Then, AJ and Matt break down the current class of fish from Buzzards Bay to Cape Cod Bay, the array of forage in the Cape Cod Canal, and what to expect in terms of fish movement on the back end of the May full moon.
This week, cow stripers remained stationed off of northern New Jersey as schoolie stripers began dropping out of the Hudson River, slot-class fish invaded the waters from Cape Cod Bay to Boston, and 20- to 40-pound bass span from Long Island to the south coast of Massachusetts.

Western sound (Norwalk -> west) has had lots of bass acting pretty aggressive around schools of bunker, hitting topwater, live, and flutters. Fish have been between 35-48, with the bigger fish being caught in the early morning. Trolling bite is consistent just about everywhere, specifically around the weather buoy mid sound off greenwich, marking large schools of fish and bait. Blues came in, not a huge wave but definitely there. That’s abt all I got from my week, been out 5 times
