Canada has already passed that point.
Fun fact: crossbows aren't super quiet. I'm sure some are, and they're definitely quieter than a gun, but every crossbow I've shot or seen shot has had a crack audible for hundreds of feet.
Good to know👍
There's a thing bow hunters use called bow silencers. Basically giant koosh balls you put on the string.
@1337penguinman a whiskerbiscuit. Makes it super quiet. Disc of polymer bristles that the fletchings pass through to dampen vibration of the bolt/arrow. A really good surpressed bolt action rifle with subsonic ammo is still pretty though if you do it right. Running wet with replacable rubber baffles and a condom on top.
yup
yeah. My 170 lbs draw crossbow is way louder than my compound bow. Bowstring is thicker than it too and in any type of situation where I have to fight zombies with only a bow or a crossbow I'd take a bow (as long as it's not a long bow lol) any multi target situation and you're screwed. Plus I don't know why but I can hit targets better with the bow just guessing than I can with my crossbow and the trigger is also pretty fucking heavy so I pull shots all the time. Dont usually use a release with my compound but I have one that can be set to a hair trigger. First time I got my crossbow I had to get brand new bolts cause it was bending the hardened aluminum to the point the bolt was ruined in the first shot. Bolts are harder to replace too, no way I could get my crossbow to shoot handmade bolts more than once, it's not fancy and just looks like a recurve so I cant lower the draw weight. Love my crossbow and keep it at my bedside since I dobt have a gun but if anyone breaks in I'm shooting the crossbow once and then switching to my compound 😅
They actually pan away because there's no poundage to his crossbow. When he fires, the bolt literally just bloops out to the ground. lol That said, yes, crossbows take a second to reload.
Yeah most crossbows take awhile if youre not super strong.
There are mechanical crossbows out there that are super easy to reload though. High quality ones like that and youre dropping a fortune. Like 4k.

They aren’t arrows. They’re bolts. But yes, crossbows are often take a while to reload. Some even models require you to crank a handle to reset the string.
This was one of the disadvantages of crossbows that made the longbow so effective at Agincourt and Crecy.

The siege is twice as powerful. You gotta give it to Joerge.
Reminds me of the Chu-ko-nu repeating crossbow from 4th Century BC. It might be a good design to memorize since it seems somewhat simple to reproduce. Or not, I don't do much crafting LOL But, a fast-firing weapon like that with a 'magazine' being used in ancient times always seemed kind of neat to me.
It's main problem was it's low draw weight.
let me find out you play civ
Was going to say that too, if you want to cut down on many enemies at once and you have a large group as well, those crossbows are lethal. The drawback is the accuracy and range... better thing I saw was the german crank crossbow. Similar style to a lever, but uses less force to reload. Takes just a bit longer.
Some say every time you reload you can hear a low, booming laugh and "Let me show you its features!" in the wind.
That method of cocking reduces the poundage behind the shot. Also, a crossbow you can pull without a windlass and just using your two hands is not slow. With practice you can accurately shoot one 10 times in a minute
Regular compound bow works pretty well too.
Shooting crossbow is easier than shooting a bow - to shot a bow and hit it actually takes a lot of skill and practice - so in comparison using crossbow is way easier.
I watched it evolve on Joerg Spraves channel, amazing inventor.
I liked his early videos that focused on handmade and customized slingshots and wrist rockets.
Would be a good skill to have knowledge of for small game.
@@natureboy6410 That's what I liked, his garage plywood creations :-)
@@OldNavajoTricks exactly, a useful skill that even a poor man can use and be proud of to boot! 🤗
Joerg is a legendary genius imo. I also watched the evolution and I was amazed at even step asking the way.
I like this crossbow, looks very practical.
The adder now has a 18 arrow magazine available, but I recommend the 300 siege, it is a compound crossbow, quite more powerful and has a 7 arrow magazine
Repeating crossbows are fantastic. But just for your information they've evolved a lot since this model. There's a new and improved V2 magazine for that EK Archery Adder you have there, there's also the Steambow Stinger 2, the EK Archery Vlad, and various 3D printable models with interesting features like double stacked magazines for holding more ammo. There's the upcoming Mei Interceptor which will evolve it further with interchangeable magazines and superior accuracy. Then you have the repeating bows (as opposed to crossbows) which have their own pros and cons. The market has really evolved!
I'm over here just thinking medieval era Chu Ko Nu. Lol
@@joshuamaxwell8376 same but for short bow and arrow.
i mean seriously i am not a big man but i regularly (most days) throw arrows all day and often enough (again every day atm) in volleys of three.
The problem is that this system of reloading means that the poundage will be a lot lower than a crank style reset system allows.
You can actually still have a repeating crossbow with the crank style cocking - Joerg Sprave has one on his channel. But you're right about the lever cocking ones. They are still very deadly however, even with a reduced poundage. Ultimately, the poundage is a trade-off, where you choose between fire rate or power, and what's best depends on the range you're using the weapon at.
I'm going for a ruger 10/22 or similar rifle. Extremely plentiful ammo and with good aim can harvest anything from squirrel to deer
Yes, .22lr is plentiful but it's not reloadable, I'd go with something like .223/5.56, it's also a common round with the added benefit of being reloadable.
One of those new pcp air rifles and a stirrup pump, mould to make unlimited ammo from lead! If it can drop a pig it can ruin anyone’s day!
I have a ruger 10/22 as my bugoutbag rifle. I've had ot for 15 years now as my go too survival rifle. I upgraded mine a bit, but it's such a reliable rifle. So much ammo for the weight.
A .22 with 1000 rounds that can fit in your pocket will outlast a crossbow with 10 bolts. Those bolts will get broken/lost and the crossbow itself will get wear/tear more than the simple rifle.
I got the Stinger II and I love it. I also have the AirJavelin (which you can reload pretty quickly, but it requires some co2 and it makes a bit of noise when firing. Nothing compared to the sound of a gunshot tho, but it still might draw some extra walkers).
My Break Barrel 22's can propel a piece of Lead at supersonic speeds, or over 1,100 feet per second. That's over three Football Fields end to end and you only have to say "One Mississippi" ONCE, and the report comes back. No problem collecting or storing Ammo either. Best part? You can one finger salute the gun confiscation currently occurring in America.
In a survival situation what you want is the knowledge to make a selfbow from whatever materials are available.
Definitely a good skill, that just comes years later after your preps are gone and you're hopefully alive from the mass exodus of city trash
@@kuiperdasniper I disagree... it is the skill and will to live that will enable you to survive. Those of us who prep by being skilled will end up taking your supplies from you...
My opinion reloads great, but another point of crossbow is repair as well, so if it breaks or has heaps of intricate parts, it gonna get worse. So, in my opinion, the only thing a crossbow needs would be a speed reload no mag
Every outdoors man should own a crossbow. Killer instinct makes great bows that won’t kill your bank account
I have this crossbow and it's epic! One bit of f advice I'd give is when cocking the bow don't point it up and whilst cocking because gravity and the friction of the string sliding across the bolt's causes bolt's to skip over the string and get jammed in the string release.
Meanwhile Joerg Sprave says “Hold my stein of beer.” and pulls out his 50 shot cordless drill powered self loading from a magazine dart gun, made of ply wood, and nails yer ass to a wall with all 50 darts before this self loading cross bow has got it’s second shot off.
He also invented a reloading crossbow. Or three. Dude is absolutely iconic.
You have no idea how fast I’d be putting my order in if I thought it would have the smallest chance of actually being delivered to me.
Damn that sucks where do you live at.
@@aaftiyoDkcdicurak Australia, land of laws that kill fun.
The other thing about crossbows: You can make your own ammo with pretty easy to find materials, literally a straight-ish stick, a couple feathers or some thick plastic, and a rock you beat into a head, which Darryl has done in the series. Also, you're not trying to draw the attention of a horde. In The Walking Dead's universe, walkers take like 10,000 years to get close enough to their targets. So against 3-4, maybe 5 walkers, which is pretty much Darryl's comfort range on soloing at once a crossbow is fine. If you get swarmed by a herd, that's when you use the power of you actually being able to run.
Guns don't mean anything if you have no ammo, and guns or blades should be a last resort. In that universe, 1 bite = death sentence. The sound of gunfire draws in herds quickly.
Glad somebody finally brought this up

Water is a powerful force of nature. While we are free, under a meriod of protections, there could come a time when our enemy is nature that conquers every conceivable protection we have and turns our civilisation back to the stone age and every man for themselves. I hope never to live in a time when everything you are greatful for becomes an adversary and survival depends on being prepared. I envy those that have survival training inspite of being free. We are like trees that can endure flexibility growing up in harsh conditions where as those trees that grew confined and protected rely on a different set of rules that did not make those trees experience harsh conditions and once the protections are disolved the tree is pulled up by it’s root ball and others snap having no flexibility due to it being free from harmful trials which could have strenthened it to know how to thrive.
I saw on you tube how a man trained a fish to swim out to the middle of the pond and seim back to the shallows but refused even if chased to swim across to the other side?
He set up a sheet of glass across the pond. The fish was free to swim where it willed yet kept striking its head against the transparent glass wall and with each blow by blow of discomfort began to learn where the perameters are in how far to swim and eventually the glass wall was removed and the fish was free to swim across but by now the conditioning was so intense that the fish swam within it’s comfort zone. Humans, we are the same way with conditioning and upbringing we can become comfortable with all our creature comfort’s and vulnerable when those parameters that provided us a level of comfort and protections no longer exist. We must not fall into this trap. But each of us must make our own mistakes and our own choices and i am not forcing you to change. Only to explain what can happen if we survive a natural disaster and life as we know it is gone as we ask ourselves how we might survive, if we are left to fend for ourselves…

“Ghost! Grab the silenced crossbow!”
In till your limb breaks or the sting breaks. That’s why you just need to grab any firearm you can get ammo for in that time lol 😂
You could also get some 3D printed shotgun caps (the ones that are usually brass) then make paper shells (just got to wax the paper) for break action shotguns. If you use an offset design you can use 22 nail gun blanks found at hardware stores as primers.
Black powder is super easy to make or you can harvest powder (and maybe projectiles) from other rounds using pliers.
I think about 20 normal design and 20 offset design caps would be plenty paired with a break action 12 gauge shotgun. Then preferably a 22 hand gun and a cross bow like the one you have would be the ideal set up.
Yes you have a good chance at retrieving cross bow ammo but wouldn’t be too hard to make shotgun ammo either. And 22 is along for the ride because its the cheapest most common ammo you’re going to find.
If you got a single shot 22 or a revolver and kinda treat it like a ball and cap you can use 22 nail gun blanks and 22 pellets and hit 2000+ fps. It’s not ideal but definitely can be done. Just adding more Utility to the 22 option.
I’ll make sure to grab one when the apocalypse starts
One thing that people also don’t mention in videos like this is there are systems to make reloading a lot faster. You can get built in systems that you just literally wind it real quick and it will cock the crossbow and throw you throw your boat right in it and it’s all good to go.
Crossbows are clunky to reload at first but once you get the technique they can be reloaded quite quickly.. It's the same with any type of bow but your soon able to shoot accurately with multiple arrows in your hand ready to go!!
Its also a good idea to stay within yiur draw weight, if you struggle to draw the bow then drop the draw weight to something more manageable..
I didn't know such a thing existed that's a neat little engineering feat.
I need this going in the forest!
Shizzy hits the fizzy😂

Aw hell yes, the modern Chu Ko Nu
I recommend the cross bow. You can make ammo out of nature you can do the same for a gun but not as fast and efficient and readily available. Plus break into a gem or crystal shop and grab the obsidian should be enough for at least 60 arrow heads.
