In my 1000 years old hometown in Germany the schoolkids go for the traditional "Beaver Shooting" every year, when we celebrate a big traditional festival that was initiated first time to celebrate the end of the 30 years religious war (1618 - 1648) in Europe.
Nowadays we this Festival includes three parades, two of them in historical correct clothing and uniforms from the times my hometown had to go through. After the parades there is some 17th reenactment, there are camps of the Swedish soldiers, who fought for the Protestants, and from the Emperors troops, who have been catholics. This parades have the highest number of coaches and horses in Germany.
My hometown is called Biberach, translating to Beaver Creek, so the crossbow shooting is called Biberschiessen.
You see, even today, some people shoot with the crossbow. Even in Germany.

First of all, I found myself cringing when your fingers were downrange of that cocked string, while loading the bolt and even when cocking. If that sketchy mechanism failed as you were letting go of the string your fingers would be seriously injured, at best. I had a cheap crossbow when I was a kid and had a lot of fun with it but realize now how much I and anyone nearby was at risk when we were shooting it. The alloy bow finally broke right in the middle while I was cocking it and both pieces whipped back on the string and put two serious gashes in my head, narrowly missing one of my eyes. If you really want a crossbow, get one with a cocking mechanism that keeps your hands in the clear and that can be de-cocked safely. One that you would feel comfortable letting Jack use. I'm 72 years old and still remember the shock of having that broken bow whack me in the head. Jess

Man... be careful putting your hands inside of those strings when it’s cocked back. The triangle that it forms between the limbs is a no touch zone. If that safety gives out, it’s going to mangle your hand in a way that you couldn’t ever imagine. Load the arrow from the front. It’s better to take an arrow through the hand than it is to get your hand half chopped off. It hurt my stomach watching you load that thing.

Hello there from New Zealand! Just a tip for you... Mark the string when it's at rest on the bolt groove, so that you can see when the string is pulled back. it is centered properly. Many newbies always pull on the string not knowing that one side of the body is always weaker than the other side, therefore the string tension gets lopsided, and shoots the bolt off target. Also, use a good quality wax on the string, to stop the string from drying out and fraying! Those suckers are expensive! Lol.Good hunting!

Wow! I got to get me one of those. You might be interested to watch Tod's Workshop, he makes and tests old style weapons and used a crossbow to simulate a longbow with a draw weight that would have been common in days past, not many now that can use a longbow of that type because of the strength and technique required.

Hey @Wranglestar, I also love high-power crossbows! Just make sure to be very careful putting your hand in and around the void between the cocked string and the end of the crossbow. That area is where most injuries occur (think fingers getting hit by all that string pressure). Surely is a powerful and useful tool, cheers!

They have this quality of crossbow on the BudK webpage. Also, many Pawn Shops have these very cheap and a lot have been tricked out for hunting and may even have a quiver with a few Bolts. You have to buy a target from a sporting goods store that's rated for powerful crossbows like Academy Sports, Dick's, Bass Pro, Cabela's. For a small fee, many sporting goods stores will string your crossbow.

Now that you've shot those bolts through plywood and steel toss them, that kind of force likely causes fractures in the carbon fiber and can explode in your face when you hit the trigger.
It's happened to many people with compound bows and crossbows. Use bag or block targets rated for crossbows unless you don't care about losing parts of your face and pulling shrapnel out of your chest and arms.

Unfortunately, to not get put in prison in UK and class as "self defence" is that you will need to have a weapon weaker than the attacker (and use it in a disarm/defensive manner) . Ie if they bring a gun, you can bring a knife. If they bring a knife, you bring a pen.......
You will also get sued or put into prison for entrapment or simply have broken paving if an attacker decide to trip over them and injure themselves because you didn't put warning signs up, it also has to be illuminated if the attacker decides to come at night.

i got one of these like that exact model 150 pound crossbow and those bolts can really go far my friend shot mine at the wood pile one year and just hit the edge of a log and the bolt vanished we couldn't find it anywhere. about 3 or 4 years latter in a field in the opposite direction of where he was aiming i found the bolt while walking my dog and it was a complete half circle and almost half a mile away from the wood pile again in the opposite direction from where he had aimed. also from that i can say the cheap plastic fletching on those hold up surprisingly well to a desert sun

The best targets for these are high density foam, old phone books and bales of newspaper. Old tires work well, too and don't wear out as fast.
The funnest target I've experienced has to be an old car door with scraps of carpeting and rags stuffed in behind the interior panel. If you are unfortunate enough to hit a void, your flights will probably get stripped off, but there is a very satisfying tin-like thump with every impact.

Ho-lee...the bolt went through the can I was shooting at, through a 2x4 behind it and a few inches into the dirt behind that. Even when they're kinda junk and look like a toy, these things can be CRAZY powerful...
