I'm an East coast guy. First time I've ever heard of a fire shelter. Became very curious and was watching videos on them and discovered a movie called Only the Brave about the Granite Moutain Hotshots. Absolutely wild.... bravery is an understatement. God speed Wranglerstar.
When I was in school and the wildland folks come talk to us they would show their fire blankets. I'm in CA. I believe the guys you talking about were in AZ? Maybe it's more of a western thing. Idk
Hey nice video, being a recently retired usfs forestry technician, November 2023, 38 years of service. I loved doing wildland fighting during the western fire season. Type 1 hot shot crew assignments, type 2 crews, heli attack , comms unit, and ground support were a few of the assignments. But I always carried extra socks, underwear, and toilet paper. Along with situational Awareness.
while i am a young east coast man i find this very interesting because we don't deal with large wildland fires like this. very interesting to watch and learn.
When i was a kid we had a lot of drought in summer and a lot of fires because of it. For a long time now we haven't had the problem, but this year we could its been super dry. Last summer was similar but no major fires. This year the risk is going up even more. God Bless.
Fires are good and bad. Bad bc ppl die and it destroys property. Good bc once a good fire goes through an area it's much less likely to have a big fire for at least a decade.
As an aspiring proho and being from the Midwest (not many fires, if any in my area) this is super insightful and some good things to consider. Thank you for showing us your gear!
You just told me what my pack is Cody. I found mine at a yard sale and it’s my edc bag. I love it because it sits low and fits every thing I need while being unobtrusive. I also can sit another smaller backpack on top of it with other supplies for long GTFO situations. I never knew it was a firefighters pack. Makes so much sense now.

@westerngroovetv as someone else said floods are the only real natural disaster I live in the South West, there's an area not too far from me called the Mendip Levels. Like a giant bowl of farmland and towns. Gorgeous area but floods really bad every few years.
I Can only speak for myself but i appreciate you filming all of this ive learned a lot and to me I'd rather know something and never need to use it then need it and not have it. Thanks!
I've been in a funk the past couple days because the fires are messing up our road trip to Mazama. Your experience puts my own in perspective and shames my petty problems. Good luck from your neighbors to the south, and a hearty "good job" on the quality of your plan and preparations.
I truly wish you and your family. The best of luck I have grown up in the mountains of Colorado and I have lived in Eureka Montana and moved back to the mountains of Colorado and forest fires are no joke as you know so I wish you and your family the best.
