People always misinterpret this story as being a story about a giant monster, when really the horror is that humanity itself may be permanently corrupted by forces that came before what we think of as human, and that the things we think of as gods are subject to terrors and faults like us. Cthulhu is only the head priest of the Old Ones. The fact that he's mildly inconvenienced by something like a fishing trawler makes it somewhat relatable and thus xthulhuir was memed into irrelevence

    Great Cthulhu
    Ever the warrior God
    Of all the old ones
    He is the most terrible
    For it is his delight
To slay and lay waste to everything that lies beneath his taloned feet
And the very lust to conquer
    What was once free
Drives him onward across the heavens and through the spheres
It was he and his spawn
    That defeated the elder things
Who had long possessed sovereignty of this world
Before he descended on his gray and leathern wings
Through the upper gate opened by yog sothoth
On the walls of lost cities
And in the carvings of madmen
Who have glimpsed him in their dreams
    Is his image delineated
Within a tomb protected by great seals
    He lies in death
Under the weight of the dark waters of the deep
    Yet he dreams still
And in his dreams continues to rule this world
For his thoughts master the walls of lesser creatures
When the stars in their endless turnings
Assume the angles of the same rays they shed down
In the primordial dawn of the world
Then does r'lyeh rise upward so the house of Cthulhu
Emerges from under his watery prison
The mind of the god waxes strong
And he sends forth his will to those men
Who are open to his influence
The command to release the seals that bind his tomb
    Always the stars
Never remain in alignment long enough
For the enslaved men to reach distant r'lyeh
Before r'yleh sinks once more under the sea
    Severing the bond
    Between the will of Cthulhu
And the flesh of those he has enthralled
Leaving them to wail in confusion and despair
Upon the bosom of the vacant sea
“ What can be safely written” by Nile

The idea of cthulu is certainly paradoxical. A being whose existence does not matter as if it doesn't exist it is so powerful that it could bring itself to existence. Always phasing in and out of realism at speeds far beyond compression. The gaze of cthulu is not what causes madness, but rather thinking of it's existence. Seeing it not exist right in front of you is simply maddening

I own most Lovecraft books but recently found your channel and I prefer listening to you than reading them. Your voice is perfect for these stories and hearing you has made me release I’ve clearly been reading some of these words all wrong 😂
Your channel is brilliant. May I request some Clive Barker?

I came here from film theory. They were trying to find out what the monster from birdbox was. They came to the conclusion that the monster was a rapturous cthulu. Due to the way that certain people acted around the monster. And that the author of the book had described it as infinity, and how the human mind cannot assimilate the mere thought.

Interesting! Several Cthulhu Mythos deities would probably fit the bill, to be honest.

Koot-alu, as by Lovecraft. Thank you for including what so many other texts of the tale omit: the Outermost [Thurston] Frame. Your voice flies the language's bold momentum quite expertly on this tale, & it's refreshing to hear.

Cthulu may be awesome, but he, along with the sleeping gods, us humans, and even the galaxies, are nothing more than manifested dreams of the idiot god, azathoth. When he wakes, we will all cease to exist.
But I'll never tire of this story.
