    Your reaction to this now is what mine was many, many years ago. The greatest album of all time IMHO. To me In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed seals the deal. I read a review of Elizabeth Reed once where the reviewer's comment was "Not one wasted note." He nailed it.
    As to where to go next album wise I would love to see your reaction to Layla (And Other Assorted Love Songs) by Derek and the Dominos. Not a southern rock album but Duane's guest playing on the album compliments Eric Clapton's wonderfully. If you do not know the history of the Layla album research it. Quite interesting.

    Elizabeth Reed Napier was a southern belle who resided in Macon, Georgia. She married Briggs Hopson Napier who was a captain in the Conferderate Army. They had 12 children. She was born November 9th 1845 and died May 3rd 1935. What is the connection? There isn't any. Dickie Betts who wrote the song at Rose Hill Cemetary often hung out there for some peace and solitude. He came upon her grave and decided to name his song after her.

    Greatest. Live. Album. Ever.
    While the two guitarists and vocalist get most of the love, IMHO the ABB sound is centered in the rhythm section. Rock steady yet nimble, the throb and rumble propel the band and give the soloists plenty of support to do their thing.

      To be there, to hear some of those songs in all their glory would give you an even greater understanding of its greatness. I was there with some friends. They did four shows on the last weekend of March, 1971. We had heard a few of the more popular of the lineup's songs-Statesboro Blues, Stormy Monday, Whipping Post. But almost nobody that I knew had ever heard the Allman Brothers live. So to hear these songs live was an experience none of us could have predicted. It was beyond powerful. A lot of it had to do with the combination of Gregg's writing and vocals plus the extraordinary individual and combined musicianship of the band members. Add to that the power and rhythm of songs like Statesboro Blues, You Dont Love Me, Whipping Post, and especially the song nobody knew at all but just knocked our socks off--I Musta Did Somebody Wrong-we left the Fillmore East exhausted but soooo satisfied. I'm 76 and been to a few hundred concerts, but none I enjoyed or appreciated more. AND, I got to hear Duane Allman live. He died about 6 months later. Two drummers, two lead guitarists. I don't think we'll see that again. Now that I've said that, it's probably already been done. A great memory.

    I was baptized into manhood by this album, when it first came out...I used to wonder if future generations would come to appreciate just how rare this album really is...I'm 63 now, and I have my answer, all these years later..Thank you, my friend..I mentally noted from past reactions, that you were a person blessed with the "Golden Ear"...Meaning you have a deep understanding of what good music is....A snippet of info taken from wiki: //At Fillmore East was recorded over two nights - March 12 and 13, 1971 - for which the BAND was paid $1,250 each show. The shows were typical performances for the band, and regarded as slightly above average by drummer Jai Johanny Johanson. Ads for the shows read: "Bill Graham Presents in New York - Johnny Winter And, Elvin Bishop Group, Extra Added Attraction: Allman Brothers." While Winter was billed as headliner, by the third night the Allman Brothers were closing the show//...That should explain the modest applause with the simple intro. They were virtual unknowns at the time......Thanks for the post!

    "Live at Fillmore East", in my humble opinion, has never been equaled, either as a live album, or as THE Southern Rock album. There are other good live albums, of course ... Peter Frampton and Deep Purple come immediately to mind, but as good as they were, this is simply the best.

    I'm 65 and from New Orleans, La. Back in the day we had a venue called the "Warehouse" where all the greats played from Pink Floyd to The Police, but the Allman Bros played there so often they were considered the house band. Those were the good old days when you were up close and in proximity to all who performed unlike the security laden venues today. Here is a 14 minute clip/link if you have any interest in learning of that venue: ruclips.net/video/1z3XBNKRajg/видео.html . Hope you check it out for yourself.

    Just to kind of answer your question as to if all of the music was played as written.
    Back then, a lot of groups would stretch their wings, so to speak, and just “jam” especially in concert. From guitar solos to the requisite15 minute drum solo. (Yes, really).
    That was their chance to not be restricted by the time constraints of recording an album and show how accomplished they were. Video wasn’t as prevalent as it is now. People would question and say “is that for real, is that them playing all of that?”
    ABB were the ultimate jam band and it was glorious. Never a question about them. Duane was a genius. Dickey Betts is still a genius.
    Just my opinion and experience.

      The band was post. 45's in the new era of 331/3 albums or double albums.this gave bands who could jam from rock to blues into a jazz style with the electric guitar rather than horns being at the front (fronting the band) with the base and percussion influence.this a new approach to american jazz.hey who opens up a set with two instrumentals? I am so happy for you! Growing up in Michigan, back as a youth, San Francisco was of course the mecca...I was but a young teenager. Finally got there at at 55 with my best friend from those days. We cut our rock and roll teeth on these guys, Motown, Bob Seger, Grand Funk Railroad..nether of us drank or partook of herb any more, so I memorialized the occasion with a ☯️ tattoo in Haight Ashbury...Looking back, it probably was a good thing I never made it there earlier! Anyway, she was picking up a Dolphin Motor home in Chico. We flew from Michigan, to SF, stayed with friends who took us for breakfast in the Castro, toured the Coit Tower, and dinner in Sausalito. Watched the Tai Chi exercises in the park across from the Painted Ladies..We then took the Amtrak from Oakland to Chico, had the motor home checked out good and minor repairs done it and headed out on our cruise home! Into the No Bra Zone...gambled a bit (I won 600 the first night!), my friend went bust on her allowance for the night, so she vowed not to stop in Reno...20 miles east of there, a tire blew and we had a great ride into Reno in a tow truck with a very cute young man. We're secretly giving each other the eye over him, kiddingly. He came and picked us up and took us to the shop after repairs were done a day later from the casino we stayed at...she ordered room service for dinner, still pissed at herself for losing...but good natured about it nonetheless.We joked that he might have flirted with her to steal my $$, (Thelma & Louise bit there) Anyway, we outfitted the motor home at a mall in Reno, bedding, dishes, a fan for the front, etc, and set off home on a full moon journey home under desert skies until we found the next campground...or hotel! My father died 4 days after i got home. Yin yang world, but this music still gives me comfort! Hope your life's full of great memories and stories of joy!

    Good stuff. Duane on that slide was a magician back then.

    • @alvarhanso6310
      @alvarhanso6310 5 лет назад +3

      Not just the slide, Eric. He was a master of standard guitar. On Fillmore East alone he only plays slide on Statesboro Blues and Done Somebody Wrong. Stormy Monday, You Don't Love Me, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, Hot 'Lanta, and Whipping Post, the only other songs are all standard. Expanded editions have put Trouble No More, Don't Keep Me Wonderin', One Way Out (from 6/27/71 at Fillmore East, not the March shows), and Mountain Jam and Drunken Hearted Boy out there, and those have Duane playing slide. But most of the time he wasn't playing slide, he was playing blistering leads as amazing as any ever played. I agree his slide work was magical, I just think he gets pigeonholed as a brilliant slide player, to the detriment of his standard playing that was every bit the equal or better of Hendrix, Clapton, Beck, Page, McLaughlin, Garcia, Zappa, or Betts. Let's not forget the fact that he was the first session guitarist who was signed as an artist without a band after inviting himself to play on a song Wilson Pickett didn't intend to record. A magician then, a magician now, a magician for all times, his music seems all the more brilliant the more the Steve Morses, Jimmy Herrings, and Derek Trucks' of the world illuminate it by expanding upon the magnificent foundation he built in those three years from Hey Jude in November 1968 to his untimely death at 24 in October 1971.

Not sure because they, Delaney & Bonnie had so many 'Friends" there may have been sessions or gigs with Eric, Duane, and George Harrison or even Jimmi. Hendrix. There were always different mixes. We started the concert at the very last row, our backs were literally up against the wall , Ha! My wife and I made it to the 6th row for the last few songs. That's music History right there. When Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker ended the Band "Cream," Clapton considered "God" as far as Rock guitarists were concerned(along with a guy named Jimi Hendrix) had heard of this "little Blues Band" from the southern US, and a young excellent slide guitarist named Duane Allman (21yrs old) Clapton asked if he could come over to their place and jam with them (Allman Bros.) Clapton stayed about a week, and was Blown away, especially by Duane's guitar playing, although he loved the whole Band as well as Greg's soulful vocals. Later when Clapton formed his new Band "Derrick and The Dominoes", he asked Duane to join them in the recording of the classic song Layla. The rest is history. Tragically, it wasn't too long after that Duane was killed in a motorcycle accident, getting hit by a peach truck on his Harley Davidson. The name of the next album was "Eat a Peach," in tribute to Duane. That's the short version, but you can find a full documentary of the Allman Bros. Band somewhere on the internet. Such great musicians, and good down to earth folks. LIke with Lynard Skynard's plane crash, tragedy seems to follow these southern rock Bands. At least it seems that way.

    Saw your reaction to Dickey Betts (Jessica). It was priceless. I've been watching you for a little while and your reaction is why I follow you. Genuine. Your face shows your true emotions. Your eye movement show you are truly engaged. And when you cup your hands over your headphones to press them closer to your ears so you can hear every note and nuance...epic.

    No matter what, no matter where - The Allman Brothers are my go to music. Talent everywhere. Greg, Duane and Dickie are fantastic but do't forget Barry, Jaimoe and Butch! They were the pulse underneath, coursing through all of those tracks. Mountain Jam REALLY showcases the talent across the spectrum of this band. 30+ minutes of just beautiful synergy...true magic and all held together and merged by that fantastic trio of rhythm specialists.

I've just watched you finish "Statesboro Blues" and see you tearing into "Done Somebody Wrong" and I'm thinking......"he ain't gonna make it!" No smoke and mirrors, fancy light shows, fireworks, demons or wizards, just hot damn straight ass playing!! That's how they were for the whole ride! The last lineup, which retired in 14, is the best since the original for my money, guitarists Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks bring a lot of fire and Oteil Burbridge on bass is a beast! Lots of quite good live You Tube footage of them playing a lot of the old standards, plus later material. Their last studio album was quite good too, I thought, "Hittin' the Note"

    It is a very jazz approach. You start with a basic song structure, but then everybody improvises, listens to what's happening and responds in the moment. It can go anywhere. This is probably the exact opposite of current music. You can't do this with a computer. You can't use prerecorded backing tracks. The whole band is a living organism, moving where it's going to move based on the combined input of each player. That kind of jamming is the ultimate high as a musician. Keeping it interesting for the audience is the hard part. They were very good at it. Constantly coming up with new hooks in melody, groove and dynamics.

    The band never played songs the same way twice. The songs had a certain structure to them and because they played so much together they would have specific cues they would interject so the rest of the band could go the same way as the soloist. Some cues were so subtle that some listeners wouldn't pick up on the change about to come. Great musicians are able to do this on a nightly basis. Their solos were never the same. Improvised every time.
    Amazing album.

    The ABB was a jam band. The studio albums were only samplers of what to expect seeing them live. Imagine standing about five feet from the stage and less than fifteen feet from Gregg, Duane, and Dickie. Then imagine them coming back onstage after their set with Peter Green and jamming till almost dawn. That was my one and only experience seeing them live. Still to this day, that was the most memorable concert of my life.

I heard it on Statesboro Blues, Stormy Monday and especially Whipping Post. I read a comment once I totally agreed with: "Gregg Allman has a 65 year old voice in a 24 year old body."

  • @michaeldavidfigures9842
    @michaeldavidfigures9842 2 года назад +2

    Great songs on this album, and everybody gets worked up over Whipping Post, but my favorite here is You Don't Love Me. I think this is one of the hardest driving songs yet conceived. At almost twenty minutes it is nearly twice as long as Whipping Post, but the guitars are impeccable. The pace slows just enough at the top of the hills to let you catch your breath then barrells back down them as Duane and Dickie's guitar train becomes an unstoppable force. Also notable is Thom Doucette's harmonica solo. My choice masterpiece on this album. PS: Duane shreds this one! Butch and Jaimoe keep the wheels rolling with some bad ass drumming while Barry's bass is the shadow outside the window all along the way. Hot 'Lanta is the most impressive piece of jazz improv I have heard on a rock album. This whole album is insanely good, hard rocking, and unparalleled during rock's golden age.

  • @davidcochran6291
    @davidcochran6291 4 года назад +2

    SEE!! WE TOLD YOU!! They have a line-up for the night but which songs are jammed on changes every night. How they play the song, the songs have a basic melody that they play, but then if either Dickie or Duane feels a jam coming on they just follow as best they can.Like this song Elizabeth Reed you can tell they set the song out for you. Then after they play it one time through, they take off. The jam can be 1-3 or4 minutes. Or they can take it out to the limits like they do with Whippin' Post. They are pretty equal when it comes to solo time. Any way they play it they are all consumate musicians. You will get used to picking out who is playing which guitar solo. Duane plays like the little kid who presses his face against glass as if he is trying to push it through the glass. Duane plays against some invisible barrier like he is constantly trying to push through it. He drives the section he plays in like he is trying to catch up to something, there is no rest it is relentless. Dickie is a little more laid back. He is no less a guitar player it is just styles.
    If you happened to notice they went right into their next song which was Mountain Jam it is based on the Donovan song First There Is A Mountain Then There Is No Mountain Then There Is.
    How they play from night to night changes. They did not like monotony any more than we do. Next, Eat A Peach it is another double album the first part is the finish of the concert from where album one ended. The rest of the album was put together after Duane died. Some of it was tracks he had laid down earlier. After that I didn't really listen to them until Derek Trucks joined the band and then Warren Haynes from Government Mule came on. I felt that the true spirit of the band came back after that. That band put out a live double album in 2004 or 05. They did a few live albums in between that are very listenable. But for me TAAB died with Duane, then surged back to life in 2004 and on. I didn't mean to write a book but since they are my favorite band of forever, I sometimes get expansive. Welcome to the club. Doesn't an hour and a half go by quickly listening to them? They were famous for long shows, sometimes to two and a half hours. Thank you for this I know you took a chance, but now you know!

He did say that they didn't always know how long songs would go every night but they always had markers. Places in any solo or to signal the change coming up. They all had definitely mastered their craft. Only 2 of the original 6 are still alive.

    Note: Derek Trucks is the nephew of Butch Trucks, one of the two drummers (Jaimoe is the drummer, as well...) of the Allmans. Derek started guest-playing with the Allmans when he was little. Susan Tedeschi is a guitarist in her own right, and has the kind of singing voice that the rest of us can only dream of having. plus you got to remember one way out and Mountain Jam were from the Fillmore concert anyway..if you listen very closely you can hear the Mountain Jam beginning out of 22 minutes of whipping post so you throw that 35 minutes in that's an hour for 2 songs. they just didn't want to add another album because of the length so that's the reason why it's a to record set another three or four recordset like Chicago at Carnegie Hall would end up being..because you can also on CD pick up the deluxe edition they call it of the Fillmore concerts which has all the stuff that went on that didn't make the original album I'm glad to have that 2Cd set

    Pound for pound, ounce for ounce, the most technically proficient band at every instrument, especially live, that ever graced a stage, fronted by the greatest "white" blues singer ever. To that I would add that not before or since has rock seen a more formidable twin guitar attack, or maybe assault is a better desciptor, than when Duane "Skydog" Allman and Forest Richard "Dickie" Betts were onstage together live with the ABB. Those two together in the same band as dual lead guitarists really wasn't fair to other bands of the day.
