  • How to remover, replace, and relocate your Rectifier/Regulator on a 2007 GSXR-750. VERY similar on most models/engine size GSXRs. After multiple failures due to heat from the terrible mounting location, I decided it was time to mount it somewhere smarter. If you're GSXR doesn't start, it's the Rectifier. They fail ALL THE TIME on these due to their location.
    **UPDATE**
    The bike now has WELL over 5000km on it with the relocated rectifier/regulator. Not a single issue with it at all. The charging system is putting out spec numbers without a single problem.

    I appreciate the feedback Jason I ended up keeping my bike. I came to the conclusion that my reg/stator was frying due to failure of keeping a properly maintained battery so now I plug it in my trickle charger religiously each and every single time Im done riding. I also improved my relocation of the regulator by extending the unit out even further using my frame slider for maximum air flow. It sticks out quite a bit and looks sort of goofy but I dont care as long as it fixes the issue!!! I can send you a picture if you'd like, thanks for your help I appreciate it very much!

    Perfect! Just got my hands on an old gxr 600 and immediately killed 2 batteries. First I replaced thinking it was just old, second died a couple days later. Figured out the regulator was the issue. Took me 2 hours but thanks to your video that's a small portion of how long it would have took following my Haynes manual!

      +Jason Schneider ok sir I have replaced the rectifier, I rode the bike for a week then it died again. so I was like shit battery must been drained from the rectifier. So I ordered a stator just because everyone saying to do both after I fully charged the battery it seemed fine for couple days then I checked the volts and it dropped a little. it was at 11.7-11.9 at not started. i also replaced the stator but same result. Am I missing something? I need help please!

    • @TheSchneidj
      @TheSchneidj  8 лет назад +1

      +JSKImotovlogs Usually when one of the 3 (Battery, Stator, Rectifier) blows, all 3 will blow. In some RARE occasions the ECU gets taken out as well. What you need to do is test resistance of all of the charging system wires first. Also check ALL the fuses. Be sure your battery is fully charged as well with a stand alone charger. The charging system on a bike doesn't really charge a battery, but maintains the charge. Hopefully that information helps!

Could the rectifier gets hot enough and melt the airbox? I've read somewhere that the rectifier could potentially caught on fire is this true? Hey man. Thanks for the comments. As far as the rectifiers catching fire, I've only heard of that happening when they where in their stock locations. Can I guarantee that it WON'T happen in the air box? No. However, I'd relocate it there (which can be reversed quite easily, two little holes in the air box isn't going to hurt), ride it for a few days, pop the air filter out and have a look. We went riding yesterday (36 Celsius), and had NO problems. Also I think you meant to type 94F not 94C!

    • @TheSchneidj
      @TheSchneidj  7 лет назад +1

      Yes! It's STILL working like a charm on this 2007 GSXR750. No issues whatsoever. If the reg/rec is over charging, that could be what's frying bulbs. It'll also be doing damage to other components that aren't voltage protected on the circuit as well. See what it's putting out for Voltage at the battery at idle and at about 2000rpm. That'll tell you right away if it's over charging.

    Hi Jason I am, in the process of changing mine for the second time and came across this vid of yours.On the previous occation I spiced in an extra positive and negative to give better grounding to the rec/reg.But from what ive read in the forums and from what you are saying here it seems to be a common problem these bikes have. Would I still need to ad the extra positive and negative cables if the tempertaure is controled better by doing this mod? What sort of temperature drop are we looking at with regard to the rec/reg ,The factory location makes it near impossible to touch the rec/reg after a ride. Thoughts?

    • @TheSchneidj
      @TheSchneidj  5 лет назад

      Interesting ideas Mark. As far as the extra wires are concerned, I would say "no". The amperage output into the factory wires does not seem to be the cause of the excess heat. However, the factory location being SO close to the exhaust manifold seems to be the issue. Granted, it did take about 5 minutes to get the airbox off to check the heat after a long ride, but when I did, I could easily "bare hand" the rectifier in its new location. Hope that helps Mark!

      @@TheSchneidj Shot for the info, I spoke with the 750 "expert" at our local dealer and he advised against the relocation. Not sure if it's because they can't admit to the not so great factory location or are not prepared to go against the grain and suggest mods like this ironic out of the box but inside the box idea.

    • @TheSchneidj
      @TheSchneidj  5 лет назад +1

      @@markvankoersveld5881 I'm not sure on their reasoning against it at all. Perhaps because it's a dealer? However, from the results, this has been working without issue.

I'm coming off Kawasaki and never had a single problem from any of my ninja's, the 750 is tempting me with great performance reviews and feedback, my only pet peeve: my kawis never had any problems and I've ridden them past 30k miles. Can the same be said for an 07 gsxr 750? Can you ride one past 15k miles without having a rectifier blow?

    I have the same issue with my K6 at the moment and I love this idea. However, I've heard of these rectifiers catching fire when over heating. Relocating it to a non accessible location and directly under a tank full of gas sounds a little risky to me. At the same time I understand it is less likely to over heat in this location. I'm not sure which way to go.

    • @TheSchneidj
      @TheSchneidj  8 лет назад +1

      +Kevin Smith This location is VERY accessible. More so than trying to get at the connectors in the stock location anyway. The whole engine is technically DIRECTLY under a full tank of gas. Regardless of WHERE the rectifier is moved to, if it catches fire, you're in a HEAP of trouble anyway. However, the chances of it failing before it catches fire is much more likely. Especially with an upgraded rectifier in a MUCH cooler location. In the cases of fire that I've hear of, it's inexperienced riders that either don't notice a running problem with their bikes, or simply don't care.

    • @KevinSmith-by1mq
      @KevinSmith-by1mq 8 лет назад

      +Jason Schneider Fair enough. When I say non accessible, I meant non-quickly accessible to extinguish a fire if there happened to be one. I still like the idea. Could you recommend an upgraded rectifier? I only want to do this once, as I've heard this can be a repetitive fix! Thanks.

      Yeah... The one time mine blew.. was not a pretty sight or smell. The thing was pretty much on fire. Hello Travis. So far we have NOT had a single problem with it to date. A low battery will cause the Rec/Reg to work harder causing more heat. You have to remember that the charging system isn't really designed to charge the battery, more so just to maintain it. A company posted on this video somewhere for a bracket that fits in front of the rad. I would assume that would work better than the stock location as well. Would it work better than the airbox? I'm not too sure. Different air flow in both locations could work differently. All I know is that my airbox design hasn't failed! Best of luck to you!

      Sure. Except when you're in stop and go traffic and the rectifier is still sitting above the exhaust with no airflow.

    What should I do if the plastic connector separates from the 4 plugs on the top end of the bike?

    • @TheSchneidj

      Replace the connector or try to slide the pins back in. It's a fairly generic connector as well.

    • @TheSchneidj
      @TheSchneidj  7 лет назад

      Edgar.S It very well could be. Might be that when the rectifier gets warm enough it shuts down? That's an odd one for sure. There's no heat protection device on the rectifier that would shut it down though. Just a failure when hot.

    • @bradskis81

      Did you guys happen to buy the bike used? It is possible the previous owner probably had this problem and installed a newer MOSFET rectifier which, if I remember reading about them a while back, will shut off when overheated, and after cooling, return to working. So if it's overheating, your stator might be bad, making your rectifier work extra hard, and also working to charge your battery. All this work and bad electricity from the stator might overheat it causing it to shut down. Once it's cooled off and begins working again, your bike starts up, runs on the battery for a bit and the cycle continues. I'm no expert though... just a thought is all.

    • @TheSchneidj
      @TheSchneidj  7 лет назад

      A valid opinion Brad. Yes, newer "aftermarket" Rectifiers do sometimes have an "over heat" feature causing them to shut down. However, this was not the case on this bike. The stator was replaced with an aftermarket one from RMStator as well. The rectifier that originally cooked was the OEM unit. The bike could be left to cool for days and it would still not function as it should. A simple probe with a multi-meter ruled out a faulty stator the second time around. Once the stator AND rectifier where upgraded and the rectifier was relocated, all charging problems where rectified!

    • @TheSchneidj
      @TheSchneidj  7 лет назад

      rican 13210 Sounds as if your rectifier/regulator OR the stator, or both have died and the bike is running off what little power the batter has. Test for voltage output at the battery when the bike is running. If below 14.1v (I think that's spec? You'll have to Google) then your charging system has died.

    • @rican162
      @rican162 7 лет назад

      Jason Schneider ok thanks I bought the stator/ rectifier gasket kit so I'll install both jus in case bt hopefully that will fix the problem is the stator easier to install then the rectifier?

  • @Mandude33
    @Mandude33 7 лет назад

    now if the rectifier ever fries or catches fire it's trapped where you can't get to it fast and there's a nice big gas tank sitting above to blow up lol I had 2 rectifier blow up on me but I'm in 110+ degree temps so it's hard to keep mine cool

    • @TheSchneidj
      @TheSchneidj  7 лет назад

      Travis McGee It would take you MUCH longer to get at it in its stock location which is still below the tank. Should it catch fire in the new location, it's still contained away from the fuel tank. In the new location you don't have to reach over screaming hot exhaust pipes and the plugs are WAY easier to get at as well.

    actually a much easier and quicker way is to just flip the oem bracket that the rectifier is on . it pushes it out away from the header and gets more cool air . literally took me 10 minutes .

    • @TheSchneidj
      @TheSchneidj  7 лет назад +1

      kailani caleb Yes, that does work. However, it doesn't move it very far away from the exhaust, and in my opinion, looks terrible hanging out the side.
