Just got off the bus in 2006, head upstairs, turn on the tv, this theme plays with NASCAR Qualifying coming on. Everything is right with the world. take me back.
So true! Even in 2009! But now... NASCAR doesn't give 2 hoots about qualifying. "To quote NASCAR tv graphics critic AutoRockinracing94, TV MUST BE TOO BUSY PLUGGING IN CREDIT ONE BANK... (Howie sound effect)"
Miss the days of speed channel, loved Raceway, Windtunnel with Dave Despair, Gearz, Pinks All out, NASCAR Preseason Thunder, Monster Jam, AMA Supercross, this channel was loaded with good stuff.
Good Evening race fans and welcome to NASCAR Raceday on SPEED, brought to you by The Home Depot. I am your host Steve Brynes, joining me are my co hosts Kyle Petty and Elliot Sadler as well as Larry Mcreynolds here in the sunshine state Florida as we get ready for Daytona Speedweeks.
"I'm Mike Joy, with Larry McReynolds, and 1989 Daytona 500 Champion Darrell Waltrip, welcoming you to Daytona Speedweeks 2004, the NASCAR off-season is finally over, and we're ready to get back to racing"
This is back when racing culture and automobile/vehicle culture was a bigger thing. Even around the time the SPEED channel existed, The Fast and Furious series was in its prime, and the RACING genre of video games was much more popular with more variety of RACING game series. One thing I noticed is that NASCAR has been dying over the last several years, but when the SPEED channel was around it was much more popular. I don't remember what show it was, but there was this one show on SPEED channel where you had all the sexy bikini babes standing next to so many different types of race cars or custom cars. I don't remember what it was, but this was the place for all kinds of vehicle tutorials with your engine and all the racing culture at the same time. All into one.
NASCAR isn't "dying" though. It's just returning from being mainstream for a few years. In Europe F1 is now doing the opposite again. They were mainstream 'till 2009 or so, then had the same fate as NASCAR now has, and now they're returning back to the spot they belong.
NASCAR was hurt by a combination of factors in the late 2000s and early 2010s that it's only now recovering from. One of them was the broadcast itself, especially with ESPN. A lot of races got booted to cable, so a lot of people didn't get to watch them, and the broadcasts themselves were pretty awful. The racing product itself was suffering as well, and the Car of Tomorrow, while increasing the safety of the racing, was negatively affecting the on-track product. The playoffs system introduced in 2004 was beginning to show its cracks as well, and fans were beginning to question it even more. Even more questionable decisions by NASCAR's leadership (Brian France especially) would hurt the sport for the entirety of his tenure, and a dark cloud would loom over the sport for the remainder of the 2010s. This is also the era that I believe the fanbase's overwhelming negativity truly began. To be clear, I don't think NASCAR "is dying" either. If anything, I think the sport is trying to heal and pick up the pieces of what was left from the Brian France era, and it's seeing the first real good publicity and growth it's had in a long time, but I do think it was hurting a lot during those years, especially the 2010s.

it's 2004, 5pm on a Friday. The Busch cars just got off the track for practice and it's shortly time for the Cup cars to qualify. The dusk is settling in on a gorgeous spring evening. Ryan Newman and Kasey Kahne are favorites for pole as they are most weeks lately. You have a frozen pizza in the oven and a six pack of soda products at your ready. It's a tripleheader weekend too, so you don't even have to change the channel as the Truck race is on right after qualifying! It's the weekend. Life is simpler. Life is good
