- After 4 years of using this lens, I will share the biggest disappointments that I had with it.
Although the Canon EF-M 22mm f/2 STM brings a lot of benefits, it also has 2 problems that keeps it in "The Mediocre Prime Lenses League".
For context, I will show you a photowalk that I made at a light festival, where I used a Canon M6 Mark II and the Canon 22mm f2 lens.

What is your opinion about the Canon 22mm f/2 lens?
Those are not really an issue, the first problem has nothing to do with the lens, you just need another one for the kind of work you need, the second problem the camera itself corrects it on camera.
Very nice review. The photos are really good too.
Thank you!
I’ve been using this lens at night professionally for video and photos for years. My base is the m6ii but my backup m100 is still usable to a point. I do live in NYC and there’s ambient light everywhere
Yes, having a lot of ambient light helps a lot. Glad to hear that you're still holding on to a M100 (I had one - nice little camera)!
I use the 24mm f/2.8 EF-S with adapter on M6II. For the night time I would have used a 35mm f/1.4 manual focus TTArtisan EF-M lens. It would get your shutter speed faster.
The EF-S 24mm f/2.8 is a good alternative for the 22mm and the M6 Mark II, hands down, a great camera.
This video is a different point of view for the lens and I like it. I saw in FB marketplace in my area that is being sold for $110. Is it a steal or pass?
Glad you like the video! $110 is a good price. Even $150 is good. I would say yes, $110 for the EF-M 22mm f/2 is a steal . If you have a compatible Canon EOS M camera (like the M100, M50, M6, etc.) , you can give it a shot.
I'm finding it creates very noisy images in low light compared to a cheap 1.8ii 50mm (at the same ISO and aperture). The lens vignetting is really bad on this lens compared to a the 50mm. That lens has very little vignetting and for most shots is much better. Any suggestions in low light. Even flash shots look like crap
The EF-M 22mm f/2 lens has some big issues when it comes to shooting in low light and vignetting. In fact these are its biggest flaws - why? Because the glass is very small - same as a doorhole (peephole), so it is a poor performer in low light. The 50mm f/1.8 is much bigger, that's why it's better. There is nothing that can be done about this lens in low light - it is constrained by its own optical limitations. The only thing we can do is to turn on the in-camera Peripheral Illumination corrections - they will affect image quality a bit, but at least we will see brighter corners - In extreme low-light we just need a faster lens (f/1.8 or f/1.4). Hope it helps!
I use the Sigma 1.4 trio for night photography on my M50 Mkii...
F/1.4 on a APS-C sensor camera is much better for night photography. Also, the M50 Mark II is quite a good performer in low light. Good gear!
But the 22mm f 2.0 is a very sharp lens… much sharper than the trio sigma lenses for the M mount
Yes, it's a sharp lens. There's no mention in the vlog about sharpness disappointments. Vignetting and the (not so fast) f/2 aperture are the bad things. If you're curious about sharpness, there are many videos on this channel with sharpness tests (compressions) - some of them include the 22mm f/2.
I use EF 50mm f1.8 + Viltrox SpeedBooster = f1.2
Nice invention, the Viltrox Speedbooster! Going from f1.8 to f1.2 is great!
Yr video isnt accurate about the lens. F2 isnt enough for low light photography. Is it the fault of the lens? It is only if other lens at f2 is enough, but that isnt the case. So why is it a problem of the lens?
The 22mm f/2 lens is one of the better budget lenses out there for Canon, but it is still a budget lens with its drawbacks. Take a look at the Canon EF-M 32mm F1.4 STM lens which should give you a nice bump in performance.
For sure, the EF-M 32mm F1.4 is a better performer in low light. A longer lens is also the better option for nocturnal photowalks (better subject separation). For the event I photographed, I needed a wider lens to capture the spectacle. With this occasion, I taught bringing up the 22mm's 2 problems would make a helpful video. Thank you for recommending the 32mm F1.4!
Everything is a trade off
