Close your eyes, listen, and the man you see is Getz. So, is Scott to blame . . ? On the contrary; he's to be praised for keeping up the style brilliantly!
Was in Rio for Carnaval in 1969 during the heyday of bossa nova. At that time it was Astrud and João Gilberto. Glad to see a younger generation is keeping this music alive. Andrea is great, as is the whole Joan Chamorro ensemble. Unfortunately, I'm now to old to do anything but fantasize about the young and gorgeous Brazilian women. Those were the days.
1969 ...Rio Bossa. Wow you lucky devil. If I believed in reincarnation I would believe I was born in Rio and lived on the beach before discovering Tom Jobim etc.
You are so on spot, Joan has orchestrated quite a young egar group of youngsters that are moving the Jazz world forwards... love all the music performed under his resign. ADREA MOTIS...SHE IS A CLASSICAL JAZZ FANAMINAL... I LOVE HER SO DEARLY FOR THE MUSIC SHES DONE.
I was a fan of Bossa Nova/Samba from the first time I heard Astrud Gilberto and Stan Getz on the car radio in the early '60s and had to pull over 'cuz I couldn't drive. Once the tune was done, I drove to the record store, hummed a few bars and walked out with the album. Boy, did I want to get down to Rio, but a few years later, Uncle Sam had different plans for me and I ended up in a different hot spot. Carneval '69, I was three months away from coming home and by that time I had other things on my mind than Carneval, but I've been listening to the music ever since, just tripped across this and am gob-smacked. Glad you got down there and hope you made a lasting impression on as many as possible of the most beautiful women in the world. Good on you and, yes, those were the days my friend.
Scott Hamilton + Joan's Quintet with wee Andrea singing in a beautiful language of which I do not know a word. Enthralling, captivating, refreshing, heart-delighting !
How have I never seen this before? My favourite band playing one of my favourite Jobim classics. Ignasi Terraza IS a genius, the comments below are correct. Scott Hamilton's solo is wonderful. Did Esteve Pi drop his sticks? ha ha. His timing is impeccable. Josep's playing is sublime, as always. Sr Chamoro doesn't just play this jazz, he lives it. The enjoyment is plain on his face. And as for Andrea... no words necessary. Thanks for cheering up a wet Thursday for me.
3:13 This has to be one of the most masterful piano solos I have ever heard. The way he picks up the theme from the last bars of the sax solo, develops the theme, then goes on to create incredible counterpoint with two melodies while soloing. Simply amazing.
Yes! I agree. Not many jazz pianists play counterpoint. Mehldau and Jarrett, for sure. This pianist is really brilliant. I've watched other Chamorro videos and have seen him play really inventive solos with a laid back intensity. I wish they would list the musicians' names so I know the pianist's name.
Sensacional!
One of the best versions... no words can express... Joan Chamorro nailed it and of course all of them, can't wait to meet them someday when I go to Spain. Andrea Motis is one of the best.. also Magali Datzira...
A lovely rendition of this Bossa Nove era classic. I used to hang with Scott Hamilton in London in the late '80s, when he was a regular on Pizza Express Soho and European tour. He truly is a wonderful saxophonist and loves playing with good singers. Andrea is an exceptional musician and the musicians in the ensemble are all exceptional. I love this!
I used to wonder how they get Scott Hamilton to come back so often but watching him I guess that its because he really enjoys playing with the SAJB and he adds so much when he does.
This is a really wonderful performance. The band's energy is way up, bc they're all having a good time, playing well, digging the ensemble, and wowed by that piano solo!
I first listened to Bossa Nova in, around the 70 s. I remember Astrud and J Gilberto, Antonio C Jobim, Frank Sinatra, Mendes, etc. But now in 2019. 21st Nov I feel privileged that this music is still much alive. Thank you senor Chamorro and all your team.
Possibly mesmerized by Ignasi Teraza's piano solo, Andrea loses the rhythm around 4:07. Esteve Pi skilfully brings her back on track (4:24) to the amusement of Joan Chamorro and Scott Hamilton. But it is her facial expression (4:30) that gives us a little peep at the experience of that performance that only the musicians can truly know. All gratitude and admiration to the members of this group and also to the video editor(s) for this brief glimpse at the performers as they experience their own music.
OMG! I have never ben able to figure out how pianists of this caliber do it...and blind to boot. Their brains must be wired differently. Stunning piano solos every time. Wonderful music inthe air whenever Joan Chamorro and his musicians are around! Thanks to the gods!
Why hasn't any music school or music promoter brought Joan Chamorro and his remarkably talented students and musicians to the U.S.?? He arranges and performs so many American standards better than any other group performing today.
