Im extremely honoured to say that I know this man and love him dearly. He put me on his station in 1999 after Det had introduced me to him. Over the 4 years I DJ'ed for him I havent got one bad or even slightly negative word to say about him. One thing i do joke about is that I always had to remind East (every six months) that the clocks changed in the middle of my show, texting him a few hours before asking what time he wanted me, then after a few minutes of him arranging things, he would get back to me. I grew up in Kent listening to Hip Hop, Soul, Funk, Electro...but when the Rave scene kicked in, I was hooked. There were a few raves round these ways but, when there were no raves on, we used to somehow have copies of things like Ron & SL on Kool, Jungle Fever, The Eclipse/Edge all on cassette tape (who would have thought years later this boy from Kent would perform at a Fever event). I would listen all week in class, i would fall asleep and wake up to the music. Him and Suzie are part of the foundations of Hardcore/Jungle/Drum and Bass, the pillars, a cornerstone, and will always be remembered for that. No words can describe the effect and legacy him and Suzie (plus Smurf, and all the others involved from day 1) have had. The scene and music in it would not be the same if it wasnt for them. Big up Ron for these brilliant interviews. Although I was in the scene, these chats have completed educated me about the music we all love, its history, locations, players, conflicts, and victories. Also big up for the role you played in it yourself, a massive influence to me and many others 🙏 Big up Eastman. Love from all the corners of the scene and from me ❤❤❤
Hallelujah!! I love this man!! Eastman the peoples' man!! His golden legacy lives on. Thank you DJ Ron for delivering this! Looking forward to listening to this.
I was born in America in 83. Grew up on so many different types of music throughout the 80s and 90s. I always gravitated towards hip hop and dance as a young one. Toward the end of high school, in 98-99 I was introduced into Jungle/DnB from a good friend. I have never looked back since. I love this culture and the music that stemmed from it and how it spread over to my area and beyond. It is so interesting to learn about all this and to see how it continues to grow and impact younger generations. Truly a special thing for us all. Thank you, Ron for sharing so many detailed interviews with these legendary originators, yourself included. I feel even more educated after I watch these interviews with my heros. My crew and I over here in the US are still producing, djing and throwing events in our area. We aren't famous but we known here and are so happy to be a tiny cog in this massive wheel. Just wanted to share that with you because without this culture I wouldn't be who I am today. Respect.
Need to comment before I even started listening because I know how good it will be already. Thinking back to listening to Kool throughout my youth, taping all the sets, setting my alarm so i could wake up in the middle of the night to turn the tape over, Big up Eastman, Smurf, Susie and all the DJs and MCs who repped this amazing station
I’m from a small city, called Preston, in Lancashire. I had no business hearing a Kool FM tape in 1993 but nevertheless, I did. It was the December show with DJ Ron, five 0 and Moose. I played that tape all the time. Never got to the third birthday party but I did go to a few Roasts at the Astoria. I’m stuck in the 90s and listen frequently to old Kool fm tapes on Mixcloud and the likes. Maximum respect Eastman, Susie G, Smurf and the whole family.
Thanks for all the energy you were sending the scene from Preston. Trust me even the the smallest city’s and towns and villages played their part in making this scene what it was and is today and for that I thank and salute every single one of you. ☺️🫡💯
Ron, you're one of the best interviewers that I've seen at allowing guests to feel comfortable enough to speak and provide extra information without you having to keep jumping in to move the interview along. In so many interviews I hear these days it seems that the interviewer's voice takes up a lot of the valuable air time. They seem to feel the need to jump in when there's a short pause, not realising that these moments are often the points when guests are evaluating the next nugget of information they're going to provide (often the most interesting parts). This often results in an interview sounding just like a series of short questions and answers. You listen to what your guests say and use the information they've given to build the next question on, offering much deeper insight. Most importantly, it's clear that your guests really like you and feel comfortable with sharing their most poignant memories. Great stuff!
Eastman was name i used to here on Kool FM all the time and wondered, who is this Eastman all the DJ's and MC's keep bigging. What an absolute legend he is to the entire UK underground sound
Such a beautiful, beautiful, heartfelt moment towards the end when they are both chocking back tears. Kool Fm is an institution of the hardcore jungle scene.
Where would jungle be without Eastman... that is too difficult of a scenario to imagine... he has contributed so much that I believe it would actually be a different scene without him. He is, literally, walking talking living breathing jungle music. Salute to the Governor General.

Eastman take a bow. Handing over Kool was the right thing to at the right time and what this will do is continue on the legacy of what you built all those years ago for another 30 years plus. As middle age man, I’m pleasantly impressed and happy with the direction the new Kool has gone into and feel its new lease of life is exactly what the Jungle/DnB scene needs. Now go and enjoy your new life ❤🙏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

Absolute legend, Kool did so much for our scene. I had a mix tape that I recorded from Kool in the early 90's (just when hardcore was transitioning to jungle) that I took to Thailand and got it played at the cactus bar on Had Rin at the full moon party
I have to say as well I am very grateful for these podcasts Ron, being 44 yrs old my raving and record buying days are long long gone, but liking and subscribing to this and hearing these great stories makes me feel like I am still supporting the jungle scene even if in a tiny way
So great to see the emotion coming out from you both. What I loved hearing about Eastman is how principled he is as a human and as a business man. Im certain that he was fundamental in keeping the pirates working together to beat the DTI. He's obviously got the bigger picture in his head and heart and made sure it was always about the music and the community the scene built and continues the build. I doubt the scene would be anything like it is now without Eastmans huge efforts. Solid guest Ron! The scene is so much more than the DJs.
Born in 2001 growing up my dad was a DJ and hearing Kool fm when my dad put it on in his van it had a massive impact on me and I’ve never not had love for Kool since…. Massive respect
Another thing for Eastman to read, When I was a 14 year old kid, I got my old man to take me to a CB radio shop to find out how to make a good ariel for cheap. I lived in south London and my Kool FM signal was rubbish, so I made this ariel with cable trunking and 3 core flex cable and the connectors and soldered it all together, EVERY SUNDAY I would get this ariel and hang out my bedroom window and throw this contrapction on my dads roof just so I could listen to Super Sunday and make my recordings of my favorite DJs and MCs which I still have on my old TDK 90s :D Thank you Eastman respect :D
I always used to wonder who Eastman was when I was younger always hearing the djs and mcs big him up all the time on Kool fm, this was a very nice insight ❤❤
Really enjoyed this. Kool was the pinnacle of pirate radio. Loved hearing behind the scenes stories thanks Ron and east 👍👍we used to drive to London record tapes .. we couldn’t get it in Surrey.. we had others but kool was the THE one to listen to great memories 🎉🎉🎉🎉
If you had the 3rd birthday tape pack, those were some tapes you never lent out ! I was 14/15 at the time a year or so before i started going to raves.....Younghead and Swift set is fire with some of the best back to back MCing you will ever hear, Raaga Twins and Navi at their very best

I interviewed East on kool london when rinse first got there legal licence I asked him things people wouldn't dare ask him, and i barely new him. New of him obviously but not on that personal level. But what a guy he is. What a fuxking ledge. God bless ya Eastman
Its cannot be overstated enough the importance of Eastman to the scene, deserves a knighthood
100%
Fuck knighthood... The streets respect worth 100 times more
I said the same thing forget King Charles it’s all about the king guvna general Eastman
Million percent should be getting some major recognition for his massive contribution to our beloved scene.

Glad i saved time for this. Absolute top work Ron,so many amazing stories i would never have known. Bravo, sir 👏 💪 🏆
