When this came out on some promotional CD called " Ein Abend in Wien" that I got back in I think 1991, I was living at my parents still and my mom hated my music all the time. :) Until I was just bumping this promo CD one night and she came up to me saying she loved this song at first listen. Unfortunately she passed away shortly after and now that I come across this song again I am writing this in 2021 with tears in my eyes! Great song! RIP mom, love you and miss you till this very day!
man's biggest weakness is not knowing what's going on in someone else's head. music is beautiful at portraying the human mind. that's what art is about.
this is my favourite version of Sit Down. I was having a crap time towards the end of the 80's and this song as well asa 'Can't Be Sure' by the Sundays really helped turn me round. Thanks Tim
Holy crap! I've never heard this version before. It's amazing. The later release certainly has more energy to it, but this 8 minute piano classic is incredible.
I just love this. I always thought the 90s re-recording was too big and brash, although I’ll admit that at the time, I still ‘sat down’ occasionally on beer-soaked dancefloors when it was played and went home with a wet arse.
I'm torn between all 3 versions . Heard the updated version in a music store recently with my 10 year old and he loved it . We danced to it together , making memories , Thanks James. 🍀
I´m a great Springsteen fan, but i also love James. I saw their first concert in Lisboa in 1992. I will never forget that this music closed the great show !
I looked at a James forum yesterday (I was googling the "Lester Piggott" thing), and I found out that people actually complain if James doesn't play "Sit Down" at their concerts. Now, I'll admit that "Sit Down" is currently the only song I know that I know by James, but I still think that's a shame. Why would you go to a concert just to hear one song, even if it is your favorite? A concert is a good way to be exposed to songs you never thought about listening to, in my opinion try something new along with what you already know.
Those people probably aren't serious James fans. People who are genuinely into James are often more into their other stuff and also the fact they're still making new music today. Sit Down was a really big hit in the UK which is why a lot of people remember it. Now, if they didn't play 'Sometimes' near the end of every gig then I think a lot more genuine James fans might be more disappointed.
I actually heard one of their albums a few times before connecting them to "Laid" which I'd expect would be more of a fan-favorite. Eh it's all good, James is great!
I love James. I was just listening to their Living in Extraordinary Times album yesterday. But Sit Down is one of my all time favorite songs by anyone (even if I confess I prefer the Gold Mother version), so if I ever get to attend a James live show, I would be sad to not hear Sit Down.
Their worst song for me ( not this version !!) The commercialised version is a fashion thing (especially those of a southern ilk) who like to sit on the floor when they come to study in the best city on earth ( 😂😂😂). The ones that also love ' Blue Monday' (😂😂😂). Please research your bands before you make total t**'s of yourselves in front of the real thing!
Best version, period. That extended piano outro is magnificent. Too bad it can only be found on the original 1989 overexpensive cd single. Let's hope for a deluxe release for the album, or something like that.
For 20 years I've loved the appolo440 mix and sung along with it. Finally actually listened to the the words. Wow! Then I found this original version which is also great, thanks for putting it up.
If you watch the 1990 concert at the gmex Manchester they try and update this version ,its sit down new version but sounds like this with the extra lyrics... It's a must watch
I can still never understand why this version, which is brilliant, was virtually ignored, and the re-recorded, and shockingly badly produced mush that came out a few years later was hailed as a classic, and almost became a number 1 single. Ludicrous.
I can’t begrudge the more commercial re-recorded version because it introduced them to a much bigger audience and is probably the key reason they’re still around to this day (and just had their very first number one album).
The original release was the 7” version of this - lengthwise it was no different to the more popular recording, so I can’t see how it was less “commercial”. But I could never understand why everyone always raved about the other version, which in comparison is bloody awful.

She is always with you, never doubt that.
Hang in there buddy, hugs you*
Best version of this song, and very difficult to find online these days ....
By far the best version, I loved it when this song was the best kept secret in music. Cheers to all those who went to see them live back in the day.
International 2👍
@@notlob23 I saw them there around 87/88
One hand clapping live album!
Chain Mail, my song!

The best version of this music... It glows with vibrancy an energy... So good!

Love both songs!
Hang in there buddy
Holy crap!
I've never heard this version before.
It's amazing.

a beautiful statement of human fellow feeling. If they'd never made another record they'd still have a place in history for this one.
Most definitely it’s iconic has so many happy memories and sad ones this cheers me up 🥰
I just love this. I always thought the 90s re-recording was too big and brash, although I’ll admit that at the time, I still ‘sat down’ occasionally on beer-soaked dancefloors when it was played and went home with a wet arse.
This is definitely more heartfelt and sincere.
I'm torn between all 3 versions . Heard the updated version in a music store recently with my 10 year old and he loved it . We danced to it together , making memories , Thanks James. 🍀
This is the best version.
@@happyhouse9847 ... This is definitely THE BEST VERSION!! 👍

Jack Hyman took me three years to track down on vinyl. worth the effort...
Yep. Not the over exposed version where all the 'right on' student fodder literally sit down..😩
Brilliant original. Love this song so much.
This is sublime. The early recordings are just amazing.
The hand of God was in this song
I have to agree! I've always returned to this one. It's sort of my anthem.
Damn straight
@@finnzup it's the anthem of my middle name 😆
Oh fucking hell man, can't believe this version has been kept from me this long! It's perfect. Absolutely stunning.
Same here, and I love this version.
So it is.
33 years later for me!
Same here 🌟

Brings back so many great memories of sunnier days. Many thanks for sharing this beautiful song with us all man.

Yeah, I agree. I go to a gig to be surprised by the music, not hear the same old thing over and over.

So thankful to have stumbled on this version!! What a masterpiece!
11 dislikers are "touched by madness"
Another interesting change from later versions: this is performed in F sharp major rather than E major (a whole tone lower).
I've always said this by far the best version.
Ok Norbert. 😋
a song that's been so important to me had a completely different version? And it's great? I'm blessed
Best version, period. That extended piano outro is magnificent. Too bad it can only be found on the original 1989 overexpensive cd single.

I've got the 12" vinyl :)
You can also get the 7inch single too
Have this on vinyl - the piano is just amazing. Thanks for sharing!
This song bring me back to the 80s! Absoutely Amazing Tripping!

FANTASTIC!! ...one of my all time favs. We knew then something that everyone else waited year to 'discover'
Hail GOT for bringing me to this song :D
My brother has the original 12" of this and he won't give it to me😠The best, lesser known and most beautiful version.
In whatever version it comes the line "If I hadn't seen such riches I could live with being poor" is such a truth to me.
Best AND Oldest Version! ..👍

I first heard it in 91 I was obsessed with it then and nothing has changed Just feckin awesome. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Eita anos 80 maravilhoso. Plantou sementes para a década seguinte e fechou com essa atmosfera rica em criatividade.
wow! THAT PIANO!
Agreed.
Didn't know this existed, guess I've found myself ridiculous. Incredible stuff
Those who found themselves ridiculous, sit down next to me. ;-)
I looked for this version because at the end they sing Lester Piggott's name.
i love all versions of this song... insomniac too
Awesome ! So much better than the Gold Mother version !
It's brilliant
"I hope that God exists I hope, I pray."

Plain and simple ..... This song ,whatever version is an Anthem ...
Top tune!
PURE GOLD

StanPomeray too long for radio. sadly they did not realise it was another classic like Bohemian Rhapsody...
A bit like Howard Jones' "No One Is To Blame" that way. The original was great, the remix with Phil Collins not s'much.
Because the rerecorded version has a stirring passion to its sound.
I can’t begrudge the more commercial re-recorded version because it introduced them to a much bigger audience and is probably the key reason they’re still around to this day (and just had their very first number one album).

I bought this, they did it on Wogan didn't they? In 1991 though I think.
Still that totp techco/dub version is DOPE. This is the 1st time I ever heard this version
There is a nine minute live version too! The band stop playing and the audience just sing the chorus! Fantastic!

Love this version i also got the 7inch single 😊

Just wish they'd include this on their releases. They have a live version - why not the original?
