Raid is pay to skip the grind. You can obtain much of what can be skipped with free gameplay but it takes a lot more time. Some don't like it. I have paid for gear for my better characters but I dont anymore due. I personally think that Path of Exile 2 charging $30 for early access is a reasonable middle ground for a free to download game.
Maybe light empowered scourge or some shenanigans, Calia is there as a light undead for a reason.
