    If I remember correctly, RAM doubler uses compression in memory and also makes some virtual memory on the hard drive.

    • @KarlBaron
      @KarlBaron 5 лет назад +4

      RAM Doubler on Classic MacOS would also reclaim RAM that was allocated to other apps but unused (on Classic MacOS you had to set a RAM partition for each app manually...)

    Your IIci badly needs a recap.
    The problems you are facing are exactly how my IIci behaves, now that it hadn't had its caps redone yet.

    • @benh.635
      @benh.635 5 лет назад +4

      Yeah, I second this. The boot up issues may also be in some way related to a dead PRAM battery, but I would agree that first and foremost it has bad caps.

    • @Halterung01
      @Halterung01 5 лет назад +3

      @@benh.635 The soft power issues on IIcx and IIci units come from the axial capacitors failing (those need to be replaced as well, not only the SMD ones).
      One might think it's the power supply but these power supplys work until they completely fail (usually)

    • @Geopholus
      @Geopholus 5 лет назад

      I agree mostly with the others ,.. the problems are related to bad caps on the motherboard, but the no sound issue is usually just corroded connector to the speaker, unplug it,. go over ther connector pads with a rubber pencil eraser, and some alcohol, (let it dry) and and plug it back, it should work. I'm looking for someone who knows how to revert back to Sys 6.0.8 from 7.5 or other 7's., and then erase the newer system.

    • @YourIdeologyIsDelusional
      @YourIdeologyIsDelusional 4 года назад +1

      Yeah, the audio circuit's caps have done shat themselves. Typically that means a large portion of the machine's caps are on the way out on these old II series computers.

    RAM doubler sacrifices CPU performance for more RAM. Basically, RAM Doubler is constantly using the CPU to compress the contents of memory so that less of the memory space is being used. It does work, but I don't know if the CPU performance hit is worth it.

    Hey Ken- great video! I had a IIci which I got from my old graphic design job when they were getting rid of it. I used it for a long time to maintain a database for my artwork, and I loved it because it was pretty fast and perfect for what I was doing, plus I could play my old System 7 games on it. I eventually got rid of it when it kept having the same power issues you're having. I'm convinced that they might have had something to do with the locking power button on the back of it, which can be pushed in and turned 90 degrees to "lock" to make the machine power up by itself if power is lost (I guess when using it as a file server?). Anyway, I'm really digging all of your content... a great combination of funny AND informative! Keep up the good work! Hey, did you ever do an episode about that Newtown eMate 300 on the shelf behind you? Just curious...

  • @michaelcherry8952
    @michaelcherry8952 5 лет назад

    One thing you might want to look at is that the power button on the back of the IIci has a "locking" feature that would be used when the computer was configured as a server. Basically, it was supposed to automatically restart the computer in the event of a power interruption. It's possible that the switch is: a) faulty and b) locked into the "Restart" position. If the switch is faulty, it might be causing a power interrupt and automatic restart.

    Did you try the Built-in selection in the Audio Control Panel? I don't know what that other selection was, but it might have been an expansion card of some sort in there.
    And SoundEdit 16 was my favorite sound editor back in the day. I did my first audio edit on that in like 1994. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

      Googling "PAS16" turns up
      "The Pro AudioSpectrum 16 Mac is the state-of-the-art in audio enhancement for your Apple Macintosh computer. Available in LC and NuBus configurations, this audio adapter delivers 16-bit stereo digital audio recording and playback to 44.1 KHz, built-in MIDI in and out ports, and a 4-channel software controllable input mixer. These features coupled with it's CD quality sound - and bundled software makes the Pro AudioSpectrum 16 the most comprehensive, state-of-the-art sound solution available today. 9:22 What's with the video playback there? I was about to ask whether a slideshow showing one frame per second can be called a movie, then I saw the size of the file, over 30 MB... Well, at such paltry resolution that should yield a really fine framerate, so there's clearly an issue with video playback on that computer.

    Check the internal battery. If it's on the brink of death it could be causing some of your erratic behavior, and once it's out the machine won't respond to any of the power buttons at all.

    I'm pretty sure the RAM "doubler "works by lowering the placement of graphics on the desktop to 1/2 or less of the original resolution. You can no longer place icons anywhere on the screen , they snap into place, and the overall desktop beyond the viewable area is much less. So for instance if You had 99 folders on the desktop, and they went off the edges of the screen, the ones near the edges get placed in a new location which is a several minute scroll through blank space. I'm assuming the allocation of space on the desktop uses a large portion of Ram in every program, and the "doubler" , simply truncates the word length used to describe location, , and replaces one of the bits with a standard value, and meanwhile initially allocates , 1/2 as much space in Ram to "location" values on the desktop. I've switched Hard drives from the same model computer with and without RAM doubler, and that's what I noticed.
