Its 2024 and I'm still thinking about this gem xD Also, being older (and randomly choosing the life path I did), I just NOW realized there's a bunch of Arabic writing in the intro sequence (unfortunately I only saw endings of words here so I can't be certain what it said)... And the story definitely has both Qur'anic and Biblical vibes to it, many of the names sound like Hebrew... Even the soundtrack for arguably most of the game is very middle-eastern-y.. I really wonder what the creators were thinking about when they made this game
Before I watch the review or read any other comments, I want to share my review. I'm just going by memory. I'm 39 years old and I played this game around the time it came out, however many years ago. The only thing I vaguely remember is one of the towns you visit and the impressions I had on the game at the time. I remember this game being amazing. I remember really being into the plot of the game. I remember the towns felt lively and was interesting to walk around and speak with other characters. That's all I remember of this game and it just randomly popped in my head a few minutes ago. Summoner 2. Then I decided to check out a review on it.
DUDE I just NOW realized there's a bunch of Arabic writing in the intro sequence (unfortunately I only saw endings of words here so I can't be certain what it said)... And the story definitely has both Qur'anic and Biblical vibes to it, many of the names (especially tied to the "human realms", like Eleh or Maia) sound like Hebrew... Even the soundtrack for arguably most of the game actually always struck me as very middle-eastern-y.. I really wonder what the creators were thinking about when they made this game, I am getting like late-period Mesopotamia but also kind of early 1st millennium Syrian history-vibes, mixed with fucking sci-fi and pirates... HOW DID THIS GAME NOT BECOME A CLASSIC
Literally just finished another playthrough today, such a good and unique game in my opinion, hopefully THQ and Volition see this and decide to remake the game taking into account all the critiques to make it an even more amazing experience! Great video, can't wait to see more! :) Also I think it'd be great if you included a "for fans of" section so people that have played these games can find others like it beucase I've been forever searching for a game like this.
I really liked the way the game played and actually enjoyed the side quests. I contrast them to Final Fantasy 16, where every quest was a brief, closed loop, constrained to a single area, with almost no depth or problem-solving...at all. I don't mind having items that I don't know what to do with - they're a reminder of the game's scope, and force me to learn about the world to see if I can figure out where the pieces fit to continue each quest. This game felt like it was 75% perfect in basically every facet, and if they'd only build on the ideas here with a fresh coat of paint they could make a fantastic Summoner 3. Ship's probably sailed though.
@@renaissancemanreviews3409 I'm really curious about your thoughts on the original summoner. I never actually played it, but I remember watching my older brother play it about 15 or so years ago. I actually picked it up from a local game store and looked up a review and that's how I found your review of the sequel.
Summoner 2 was such a deviation from the original when it first came out that I stopped playing it about 20 minutes in, I may have to pick it up again to give it a second chance now that I'm older and have more patience
I loved this game so much. Whats crazy to me is modern JRPGs like Ys and Final Fantasy 7 Remake have started using the same action/Real-Time-with-Pause combat system Summoner 2 had!
This game was awesome I still have really good memories of this game. I replayed the demo like 100 times and when I got the actual game I played for months straight
I had a demo of this that came with an issue of Playstation Magazine from back in the day. I played the hell out of that demo lol. I'm finally able to play the full version using my Steam Deck. :)
I’ve been thinking about getting this for a while I have been going back to playing my PS2 been playing Suikoden 4🤣 I felt like I missed playing the old school games were all you got is a guide and you not cheating by watching Let’s Play videos 🤔
I have A Goddess Reborn which is the gamecube version only difference is the load times graphics and different character models for example there in game portrait that displays at the bottom of the screen and the title screen
I've been playing this game for nearly 20 years. And by far the GameCube graphics and character design is better than ps2. For the time it's a great game and for me personally still hold up well. On the GameCube it's called "summoner a goddess reborn" in which the title screen is changes as well.
Both Summoners deserve a remaster or even a third game for current consoles. They are great games
Agreed, a follow up would be great
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thinks about this game in 2021 :p

I played this game during the pre-pubescent, transition years of my life.
I still think about it occasionally.

The lore of this franchise is really unique, i hope they do a sequel or a remake and bring it back to life someday
Yes, it is sadly underrated, so I doubt we will ever see a proper follow-up.

I have bad news about Volition.
Good Review. I just picked this up the other day, I never heard of it until now
Awesome, glad you found this gem!
This game is amazing it's like one of my favorite games ever the mood, the vibe, the feeling it gives you when you start playing it!!!

@@stoshslaes6484 Yeah the original was less action based and more point & click so it's not really my style. Still a good game though.
Dark Cloud and Dark cloud 2 were my favorite i played the 1st one alot more Jade Cocoon 2 was pretty cool which was like pokemon
Summoner 2 was such a deviation from the original when it first came out that I stopped playing it about 20 minutes in, I may have to pick it up again to give it a second chance now that I'm older and have more patience
Yeah, it is a big deviation from the original.

summoner 2 is so good.
This game looked interesting, and this is a nice review! Probably the only one on the Tubes :)
This game was freaking awesome... Unfortunately other big titles eclipsed it .. such as Knight's of the old republic
I had a demo of this that came with an issue of Playstation Magazine from back in the day. I played the hell out of that demo lol. I'm finally able to play the full version using my Steam Deck. :)
Still have a ps2 disc
I def enjoyed summoner 1 and 2.

Yeah if you like action RPGs I highly recommend it

Agreed, the Gamecube version is technically superior
Loved this Game, and the world design is v good.
Playing it now. Grinding before Indibal
Man, the memories
Sh1t, it's Jeremy Corbyn at the end.
Just got this in the post today. ^^
Best PS2 game ever. Amazing characters, storyline, theme, gameplay, graphics and sooo challenging
THQ made a lot of weird games…
Imaginative.... Imaginative, that's the word. 😆
Why play this when you could play dark alliance witch is 10000000 times better
I never heard of that one I'll have to look it up
