      @@sinixdesign sinix, can you explain what you mean by making sure that one letter doesnt "cross through the angle" of a previous one? i dont really get it.

    你好! (For those who are wondering, it means hello/greetings)
    It's awesome that you wrote Chinese (I was so sure you were going for Japanese at first). Fun fact: I live in Taiwan and normally graffiti is still done in English here, because Chinese has its own direction for each stroke etc etc and thus distorting the strokes in perspective makes it not aesthetically pleasing. I jumped back to this video because you mentioned it in your interview with Sycra. I really appreciate all of you guys who are putting out these incredibly informative videos that together give me a comprehensive Art education. Don't know if you will see this, but thank you Sinix!

      I thought it was japanese YA in katakana for a second.

      Distorting the characters doesn't make them aesthetically unappealing as much as it goes against strongly held beliefs about what is "correct."

    I love looking at all the graffiti when I'm traveling. It is so cool looking at all the stories behind the art. A lot of people look down in it because if the language, but it honestly adds so much to it. There is a tunnel by my grandmother's house that has so much graffiti in it. I have seen "love is love", "creativity is dead", "world peace" and a boy with headphones and a tear running down his face. It isn't very complex, like you can tell that they did it in a rush, but their is so much story. I would love to travel and document graffiti and put it on a tumblr blog or in a book.

    If you're interested in the real terminology, the "SNX" at the beginning and "Bloodshed" were the only tags. The bubble letters and simple 3D stuff are throw-ups, or "throwies." Any really intricate, specially designed graffiti works are called pieces. There were no pieces in this video, and if you look at people's black books here on youtube, you'll get an idea of what it takes to create a piece.

    You are tremendously right.
    Some friends of mine are graffiti artists but they never really studied anything about drawing. The fact that they exercised themselves into graffiti has improved their perception of the shapes and perspective to a level where they can draw at a significantly good level.
    (I'm sorry if my english isn't really good)

    To improve your graffiti lettering, you should try to do basic letters and the deform them, avoid adding lots of arrows and things, stay simple.
    Plus, graffiti have strong roots in graphic design, color, balance, center of gravity, negative spaces, all this things are important. you can add as well line of action in letters or general motion of the piece. And don't forget that tags are simplified versions of graffiti, they will help you a lot do do better pieces, it's kinda like gesture for figure drawing. There is also a way to see letters, calligraphers have the same.

  • @zoraxbrooks

    i think part of the reason tangents are "bad" is because they're avoided so much throughout most all composition, but maybe if tangents where used a recurring element in a drawing, the they could look fine, it would probobly be easyest to pull off in a line/contour drawing, or something in the style of a zentangle.
    ... you said it flattens a piece, perhaps if you gave two objects that are supposed to be in the same plane a parrallel tagent, then it might reinforce where they are in the scene, as long as it didnt detract from the rest/look out of place.

    • @djsauchan5727
      @djsauchan5727 10 лет назад +6

      Tangents are bad only because its make its confusing which of the objects are in front.

    • @djsauchan5727
      @djsauchan5727 10 лет назад +5

      You can pretty much say that for any art principle though. You can't willy nilly say that because every art principle could follow this rule. However if you notice the exercise the reason you try your best to avoid them is because you want to improve your work. Most of the people here I know want to create like fantasy illustrations, game art, concept art, and so on. So most of these illustrations require a good knowledge of the rules but breaking the rules smartly. You have to create a sense depth and so some of these rules have to apply. Tangents are part of this because it constitutes depth and overlapping. Overlapping is part of what makes your pictures in perspective and what is in front to increase depth.
      Read more about tangents.

    Good video, but i think you missed style as a category. Becasue in europe every good writer has his own style. I think style is what really matters. Style is a group of rules, elements, details, turnings in your letter. With these rules you can draw every letter, nut just your name. But good video btw

    well youre definetly a toy but youd make for an awesome writer
    what you did were pieces. a tag is the basic fundamentals of every graffiti...its your identity, your signature
    a throw up is an enlarged tag and a very simplified piece...mostly its simple bubble letters in one color with a simple black outline
    you definetly have potential but you often times broke the letters by adding unnecessary things n stuff but thats irrelevant because you said yourself that youre a toy so good job

    one thing I don't agree with:
    graffiti actually LIVES from not necessary complications!

      Usually just Robert now. I had that website years ago, but artist websites really became irrelevant once social media starting taking over. I don't do anything notable for a living now, but I have dabbled in a bit of everything as it comes to art related jobs. I'm happier doing my own thing in the end.

    nice video, ive been drawing since the womb and doing graff for 5 years and everything from characters to landscapes bounce off the same fundamentals graffiti has, except its more abstract. if youd like to get better at letters, simply study other peoples work and adapt it, also calligraphy is very closely related. check out heavyartillerys.com/ they are one of my favorite crews, have a nice day everyone :)
