    I have used Topaz Denoise and Sharpen for 1.5 years. Both are excellent programs that I use in my daily workflow. Photo AI has not been my favorite until recently. It was interesting to learn that the noise reduction was based on "Low Light" which has always been my personal favorite choice. Until recently, Photo AI was way too cumbersome to use. Invariably it required an update, slowing my workflow down. And the result was unremarkable. However, in the last month, with some of my photos, it was the best choice for Denoise. I still prefer to go back into Topaz Sharpen to use the superior masks to refine where and how much I want sharpening. The masking in Photo AI is not as exact as I prefer. I am cautiously optimistic. Thanks for your tips and I will look forward to more. Perhaps you can talk about Gigapixels at some point? I would also love to hear how you handle culling your photos. Which program do you use and what is your downloading photos to post-production workflow?

    Scott, thank you for this video. My workflow is very similar to yours. I also use a Z9.

    I feel that you are the only person on youtube that explains how to actually get good results from Topaz, if you rely purely on Topaz you will get banding and lose detail as you mentioned but you can control the results once you overlay with the background layer.
    Banding is my worst nightmare, when I use 'save as' in photoshop in rare cases has caused artefacts and I get the most reliable results using 'export as'. I mainly use Dxo pureraw 2 and in some images it can cause banding even though the program leaves a small amount of noise behind.

      I need to explore that. I had read (a while ago) that export and save as should give identical results with the exception of some information being scrubbed (I think export removes some of the date, time, etc info?) Good Topic I love to experiment!

    • @KurtisPape
      @KurtisPape Год назад +1

      Export as does lose all the camera settings and date file data which is a bummer. I'm using photoshop 2020 so things may have changed but 100% I've had images that would lose a blotch of colour in the background using save as and some images that would it would slightly show more banding, it was a rare occurrence so would be really hard to test.
      Only way to test is if you find banding in your jpeg, try using export as and it might have slightly less banding.

      I used to see similar reults as you and differnt colors until.. pay close attention to the resolution, dpi, and color profiles you are saving and exporting at. By default they do not match.

    I know they're going away from the standalone apps, but I can't get Photo AI to do as clean of a job as DeNoise with Low Light set and low numbers on "Remove Noise" and "Enhance Sharpness". It just takes the noise and adds a slight sharpening.

    • @WildlifeInspired
      @WildlifeInspired  Год назад +1

      low light was my go to! try the updated Photo AI, they seem to offer much more subtle gradients to the NR and sharpening.

    Scott--excellent tutorial. Thank you. Two questions. 1) I'm assuming that the feet and tail feathers blur was due to motion/shutter speed and not depth of field. Had you tried applying Topaz motion reduction to this, or did you want them to be blurred? 2) Since Nikon's NX Studio produces a demosaic'd TIFF file about 30% larger than Adobe/DxO/etc, have you tried using Studio NX as the first step, rather than Adobe? Only Nikon truly knows their NEF format, as Canon knows CR3, etc.

    • @WildlifeInspired
      @WildlifeInspired  Год назад +1

      This may be beyond my scope. The images here where shot early morning with shutter 1/100-200 likely some blur in features that may have moved, was more searching for high ISO images. I don't love sharpen to fix blur. I have had some success for sure, but often I have to hybridize it with PS, cloning and masks to get it to look natural. as for the second part. Never tried. I wonder if its one of those theoretical likelihoods vs practical reality.

      @@WildlifeInspired Thank you, Scott. If I pre-process with Nikon’s NX Studio, make no changes and save as a TIFF, presumably, this is the best way to demosaic their NEF raw file. Whether then denoising with Adobe to Topaz Photo AI or straight to Topaz Photo AI, results are the same. Sharper details using NX Studio, but often “wormy” patterns in smooth areas. I like my compromised results best with your process, but would think NX would provide the best TIFF to work with. I have seen the wormy stuff both on aspen bark (sharper detail on edges) as well as a detailed printed circuit board with detail on parts, but wormy on smooth metal.

    Now I know why Topaz returns such off results for my raw files, especially colour shift. Thanks.

      @@WildlifeInspired I got this from the Topaz forum (Hi. As from Photo AI version 1.3.9
      Photo AI - Remove Noise tab
      Normal beta v2 is now called simply Normal
      Strong beta v2 is now called simply Strong
      The old Strong is now called Extreme
      I hope this clarifies things for you and answer your query)

    Honestly I do prefer the original here before the denoising. That's usually my experience especially with these newer ai denoising algorithms. It works on some images but more often than not I prefer the original. The feet are particularly soft here in the final image even when viewing the image overall it is apparent to me.

    • @WildlifeInspired
      @WildlifeInspired  Год назад +1

      This is just an example, not sure I even will post this, but one reason I use layer opacity it so compromise between original noise and NR. I think we may have a different view on sharpness and DoF (the feet may have some blur 1/100) but usually I dont care about the sharpness across the body as much as eye. This is another subject for another day and alienates me from many people.

    • @ChaseDaigle
      @ChaseDaigle Год назад +1

      I do agree with you on compromising between shutter speed and gain, it's important to make that decision and figure out what you can get away with. I also agree on the layering. No criticism meant on the original image just that i noticed the noise reduction and sharpen filters seemed to make the feet noticable less sharp. To me everything comes into play in an image not just sharpness. I used to use topaz stuff a long time ago and was eager to see what they were doing. The new Lightroom classic denoise has been great on some images but very unconvincing on others. Nothing is gonna work all the time.

      @WildlifeInspired You’ll save a lot of time with DXO 😉

    • @benchesebrough3752

      @@WildlifeInspired I've found DXO 3 gives me much more natural looking results. Being very sensitive to the "Crunchy" look AI noise removal and sharpening programs can create, I often prefer my original, noisy photo, processed with a few basic tricks in lightroom, to the results of an image fully processed by Photo AI. I don't have this problem with DXO - Much less crunch, fewer artifacts, and zero time spent on tweaking the AI inputs - I just tell it to do the minimum improvement and let it chew on batches of my photos as I do other tasks. Also worth noting that in my view, DXO 3 is a VAST improvement over prior iterations, at least in most circumstances. Well worth checking out the one month free trial and comparing a photo or two, if you find the time.

    I think the "banding" is actually called "posterization".

    • @WildlifeInspired
      @WildlifeInspired  Год назад +2

      fair. I get caught up in the common terms, on smooth gradients it should be banding.

    • @Trigger-xw9gq
      @Trigger-xw9gq Год назад +1

      @@WildlifeInspired I used to get that a lot on images uploaded to Facebook, and I had to learn not to go too heavy on the removal of noise. It's good leave a little "tooth" in the background to avoid posterization. It's a shame that FB and IG apply an additional compression to our images. Hoping you are well.

    • @19Photographer76
      @19Photographer76 Год назад +1

      Adobe Evanelists have been calling Banding for some time now so we are all just needing to adjust. One workaround when possible is to use Dither or add some noise back.

    As a professional software engineer, my prediciton is likely Adobe will buy out Topaz who is the little guy, and just incorporate into LR or Adobe will step up their AI and Topaz will just fade away.
