My mom once told me that she and my dad used to listen to Rush because he was interesting and very animated. She then told me that he used a catchphrase before every show where he said "I'll tell you how to think!" and that's when my mom immediately stopped wanting to listen to him. I can't blame her at all. The idea of someone telling me how I should think bothers me, and I think it always has. It's why I distrust and dislike mainstream media now.
I find it ironic that he is the icon of many "moral patriotic Christians", yet he is one of the most immoral people out there. Then again, cognitive dissonance seems to be big with people like that. At least, that's how I see it.
Most mainstream media doesn't want to tell you what to think. News is about what is happening. And we need free press to report when people aren't following the law. We need free press to share this information otherwise the rule of law isn't equally applied (which it isn't obviously - Just ask any of my friends who are "driving while black"). But still without a free press we're completely doomed. So support you local newspaper. And please don't lump the mainstream media in with the likes of Fox, Sinclair broadcasting or asshats like Rush. Thanks for considering.
On behalf of other Australians I apologise for Murdoch and ken ham.
At least we “sent” them overseas so we don’t have to listen to them anymore, unless you partake in his media 😏🤔. From a Melburnian 😊
We forgive you, but don't do it again.
Apology is accepted...but will you please take them back??? Lol
Ill forgive you, but only if you send me a live baby koala and i will never bring it up ever again if you also send me a joey with little boxing gloves.
We are infected by Murdoch's poison here in the UK too,

It's a wonder you or anyone can free yourself from this crap. I was an atheist at 5, never did buy into religion, of course it helped that my parents were not religious. Forever grateful to them for that.
While growing up in the Detroit Metro area, I worked at a screen shop. Was in college at the time. The one other person I worked with in the art dept, from day one INSISTED we MUST listen to The Rush Limbaugh Show EVERY WORK DAY. Must, no alternative, no matter what! Very occasionally I got the chance to listen to a classic rock station...like maybe 2-3 times a year (Or anything else. Her sick days were a nice break from the blather). Bombarded daily with his BS still didn't turn me into a Ditto Head. My coworker was really full into him. I couldn't understand her love, considering the way he talked about women and the environment, as she was female and lived out in a house in the country and claimed to be a country girl. Years later, it occurs to me that she perfectly fit the conservative, country, white, god and guns type of stereotype. Probably even more now that he is super mainstream. But then, who knows, maybe she deconverted, eh?
The reaper is coming soon for Rush Limbaugh. 😊
My wife told me that women who listen to Rush and/or love/defend Trump are either straight up dead inside or simply soulless (assuming souls are a thing)
@@darksoul479 That day comes for all of us, will you be that happy at your own??
@@gdobie1west988 what a stupid question.
Why didn't you make her SHARE? No one has the right to subject sometime else to that much sick poison against their will.
It's amazing how religious indoctrination correlates to political indoctrination on the far right. I used to view Rush and Hanity as American heros and didn't change my political views until I left Christianity. Thank you for making this chapter public! It's helped people like me get our heads out of the sand and realize what's really going on.
I find that fascinating, the way that religion, certain kinds at least, inform your politics and that escaping religion does too, I've noticed it happening to Seth Andrews over the years, he comes across as far more liberal than he was when he began the thinking atheist. It just goes to show how inextricably linked politics and religion are in America and I can't help wondering which motivates people the most.
Don't you agree, though, that they have changed the rhetoric and meaning of their words? I'm glad I found the EXIT, but the initial motivation was that they adopted politics that seemed contrary to what I was taught you were supposed to be to be a disciple of Jesus. Then when they went all in for Trump after all the crap they talked about Bill Clinton... I realized many of them just make things up as they go and it suits their purposes. I really didn't choose to leave my religion. They left me. Then after studying and researching I realized it was all bullshit and couldn't believe any of it anymore.

Angry white males
4 thumps down 6 min after release.
@@tapiwakay haha yes. very angri grrr
The title is one thing, plus based on the first few minutes, the book seems to be hate and condescension. Someone joined the "iambetterthanyou" club, and now provides entertainment for the fellow "betterthanyou" people instead of an honest reflection. Its an excercise in othering instead of seeking understanding. Even if it somehow gets better later on -which i dont expect- it still deserves the dislike.
Former Okie here, it's hard to escape the cult and even harder to be around family that's still in it.
America baffles me: it's the only country I'm aware of where it's perfectly normal to racialize headlines with references to "black men" and "white males" and so on, which is considered extremely poor form anywhere else I've been around the world. What an odd, odd nation.
"Angry White Male" is generally not an acceptable generalization even in the US. I personally don't mind the title and I love Seth, but I'm sure it will make a portion of the audience feel uncomfortable (could explain all the dislikes)
The difference between America and the rest of the world is that no other country on the planet has anywhere close to as diverse a population - culturally, racially, etc. - and, in order to be heard, you have to provoke to engage here. “Angry White Males” is effective because it’s actually white conservative men who have the racial hang up. They’re the ones getting increasingly hostile to changing demographics and norms, so calling them what they are REALLY pisses them off. You might ask, what’s the point then? Right? There isn’t one.
In America, communication is not about exchanging ideas, it’s about bludgeoning your opponent into submission. I, actually, have no interest in “hearing out” conservative views, myself. I think I sufficiently understand what they want and how they think and there’s nothing they will do to change my mind when it comes to religion, civil rights, etc. So I don’t give a shit what they feel or think. I approach my interactions with them the way two enemy armies would approach each other during a cease-fire...cautious but ready to go if they want to.
Yes, it’s pointless, but if you approach discourse in this country as a rational, open-minded human, you’ll go insane. Seriously.
@@datamasked623 Yes, this. Unfortunately. And, not for the lack of trying...

@@aaronkershaw3653 lmao it's very obviously not talking about *all* white men, it's talking about the fact that the overwhelming majority of right-wing radio listeners are, in fact, angry white men. If you actually listen to the video, Seth Andrews used to be one of them.
@Li'l Squeak Don't be disingenuous with "MUH RACISM!!1!" It's very, very obvious the title is referring to conservative radio listeners - who are overwhelmingly angry white men.
@Li'l Squeak Yes it does. As I've commented elsewhere, conservative radio hosts *intentionally* try to appeal to straight, white, Christian men. If you bothered to watch the video you'd hear numerous examples of radio hosts blasting pretty much every group outside that demographic. If you aren't white, conservative radio wasn't made for you.
@Li'l Squeak Me: white, male, angry about a lot of things, but not at all about that title. Andrew is refering to that specific demographic group that includes himself.

A friend replied to an instagram saying 'Pray For Rush Limbaugh' with "I did, it worked!". Quick, great reply! Rush is, after all, disgraceful and immoral.
Cancer is too slow.
That's funny! How come everyone has forgotten the fact that Rush was addicted to Vicodin? Every drug addict is written off in America. Now that Limbaugh is dying we're going to forget the fact he was busted for buying his drugs. Well, technically his maid would make the purchases for him. What a pussy. He's a loudmouth, obnoxious pos, but he doesn't want to get busted for buying Vicodin. Chicken shit.
"Baptized in a sea of outrage"! That is great writing, man. 👍
Bought your book on Audible, Seth. Great reading by you and a good listen. More power to you, sir.

Now I remember why I stopped listening to Rush and Fox and all that... "liberalism is a mental disorder". I was a George Will conservative who respected the idea one should steelman your opposing view. And Rush, for all his self proclamation of intelligence and integrity, made strawmanning the center of his entertainment. Gross.
Please don't refer to that slug as Rush. It sullies the tremendous reputation of that legendary Canadian rock band. Listen to Rush. Love Rush. Insult and deride the human garbage that is Limbaugh.
@@RickReasonnz good point, thank you, I'll do that from now on. Long live rock!
I used to be a Rush addict when he first came on the air because he was different at the time. Then I remember one day he said something about an important thing going on over the weekend over Bill Clinton and that "you folks don't need to take the time watching this over the weekend, I will be watching it and tell you everything you need to know on Monday's show." Something inside me clicked and I realized he insulted my intelligence AND he was RIGHT! I didn't stop listening to him just then, but I did start reading the books, reports and check the sources of the things he would talk about and found out he was either full of shit or twisting and omitting important details just to tell people what they want to hear. I started listening to him a bit recently just to gather intel from the source and found out he was saying the same old song and dance. But, why would you expect someone that made a fortune telling lies to people to all of a sudden become honest about a lot of things?

My best friend has lost his mind to Fox News and Trump. It's a terrible tragedy. I wish he would listen to this but he won't give alternatives a minute of his time.
There's a very good reason for that. Can't let any light in, might accidentally see something.
This video doesnt provide much information and it is not written in a neutral manner, so showing this to a right winger is just antagonizing. If he sent you a video about how stupid and close minded you are that would not appeal to you either.
Choose your friends wisely! Sometimes it’s not just religious-right programming, but rather a window into the soul of the individual that you are looking through.
@@blainehansen7749 Sure, but I have been his friend since I was 8 and now I'm past 60. No 'choice' here just long experience - besides I would say it was 'he' that influenced me to lean into the 'left' as he has been sort of a hippie most of his life. As for the "soul of the individual" thing, I don't fully subscribe to the idea that we have an unchanging essence. Would be quite terrible that were true.
you might try subtly finding out what he is afraid of. fear makes people "conservative".
I should forward this to my Fox News and Rush Limbaugh indoctrinated father, but he’s 81 and I don’t see the point of upsetting him.

There are some countries that don't allow FOX to play within their borders. The US should follow their move.
Anger is not a bad thing. Anger motivates people to action. Anger at the injustices of the world drives us to change them, and make the world better. Anger is powerful, but anger is not rational, and easily manipulated.

I was raised Catholic in Southeast Louisiana. I suspect my parents leaned center right as I was back then, but they were mostly apolitical. I still remember the first time I heard Rush Limbaugh, I was in the Air Force and my supervisor was on leave so I had to work with someone else that day. It was horrible, all I remember thinking was "who the fuck is this guy and why are you listening to him?" This was in 1992, and the guy was just eating every word that was spoon fed to him!
I think most of us used "gay" as a slur until the late 2000s. It took longer than it should have for the bandwagon to get going, and I imagine any gays reading would agree it wasn't just the staunch Republicans who were intolerant.
That and “retarded”
I am gay, and I grew up constantly hearing "gay" used as a slur. I've heard it so much that it barely registers in my mind anymore. But when I was younger it definitely destroyed my self esteem. I stayed in the closet until I was 23, and developed a drug addiction, partially because of my self hatred. When I was growing up, if you were gay, people acted like you should either move somewhere no one knew you, or kill yourself. I eventually came to like myself and truly not give a shit what people say.

We may have unseated Trump, but that will be short-lived if the so-called moderates and “independents” don’t pick a side and stick with it. Democratic leadership needs to understand this also. Stop appealing to the middle. If you want to win elections, give the moderates an ultimatum like Republicans did. It’s our way or the wilderness. They’re holding back progress, now. Republicans are full speed ahead and Democrats are still trying to please everyone.

The more people are exposed to the true colors of progressives the better. Its like reading the bible making you an atheist.
@@tothumn Pander to the fringe? That's where politics is going. Do you want to WIN ELECTIONS or not?
Don't be so sure. The election results aren't certain yet, though at time of writing it does indeed look like Biden is the most probable winner. There is still the possibility that Trump might have done unexpectedly well in the remaining six states. The election could also be close enough that legal challenges might affect the outcome - counting isn't even done yet, and Trump's campaign has already filed lawsuits in four states challenging the vote on various grounds of alleged misconduct. The suits will almost certainly fail to do anything, but almost certain isn't certain - the campaign wouldn't have filed them if their legal staff didn't believe there was some hope of success.
This is US politics, remember. It's not just the fate of the country at stake here: It's the future of the world. The stakes are far too high to play fair: Every advantage will be seized, by fair means or underhanded.

I agree with everything that you said. It is hard to have sympathy for Rush Limbaugh because he has not showed empathy towards anyone else. I feel bad that he has cancer. But I vehemently disagree with his views. How did he ever arrive at the conclusion that smoking is not addictive and that it does not lead to diseases such as COPD, Emphysema, nor increase one's chances of developing cancer. I wonder what he thinks about that now?
Seriously Seth, why choose that title? Would you be comfortable doing a show about “Vox and the angry black woman”? What does race have to do with it?
A lot, actually. Conservative radio *intentionally* tries to appeal exclusively to straight, white, Christian men. Have you actually listened to the video? At all? He brings up multiple instances of radio hosts being racist against non-whites, sexist towards women, and deeply homophobic. It has everything to do with race and sex and it's dishonest to pretend otherwise.

@Kosh Naranek you can't make me believe something I don't that I completely disagree with, everything these troglodytes stand for, I despise, so, if you want to be brainwashed, it's pretty easy I guess, but that's not me. Why Liberals Are Possessed
It is natural to assume liberals are wrong but in assuming they are wrong it is important to figure out why. If liberalism is just errors in thinking we need to explain why they think wrongly. A more insightful person would also want to know why liberalism cannot be reformed by reasoned argument. Questioning a liberal will be met by emotional outbursts that soon grow ugly and personal. To reject the argument that liberalism is a collective possession is to leave one searching for explanations as to why liberals cannot debate dispassionately.
Liberals are triggered the elements of Christianity. There is no magical power in Christian accoutrements. Collectivists do not hate the bible and holy water because they can harm heathens in a physical way. Collectivism relies on the disenfranchisement of individuals. Christianity, free markets and free discussions empower individuals. Logical arguments unhinge collectivists because they can only go one direction, the invalidation of collectivism.
Only individuals invent, create and make choices. All value and progress is created by individuals. Individuals make choices that add value to existing assets. This tells us that collectives live by parasitic infections of the earning class.
Independent individuals do not play hosts to collectivist parasites. Thus there is enmity between the seed of Satan and those who follow Jesus.
I love U Seth but we’re couldn’t have enough guns .
The right isn't just social stances... it's about capitalism and small government. I am for capitalism and small government. So even tho I agree with the left on social issues... their big government and socialism baggage comes along. So I'm an atheist conservative. As if being an atheist wasnt bad enough... we get grief from other atheists!
Finally! I've found someone who thinks like me! I too am an atheist conservative, and it's a lonely life, lol.
Small government is not possible in such a massive country like America. There’s over 350 million of us! I’d rather not live in a society like in the industrial revolution when employers could pay their workers pennies a day, while making products that were downright dangerous to their consumers. Keeping child labor illegal is also something that should still be in place. You can’t protect the consumers from dangerous products and employees from dangerous work conditions without government oversight. It’s also nice not having to pay out of pocket for the police, fire fighters, public school, etc. The only people “small government” benefits are the super wealthy. That’s it
@@TipTheScales27 well said!
The problem with that is if you want small government, it comes baggaged with non-progressive social issues. It really is a doomed if you do, doomed if you don't. Not your fault; America is just SUCH a dichotomy that you do not have a choice. Other countries, UK, Aus, NZ, for example, do not have this problem. We have relative choices. So question is, do you prioritise limited governance over social issues?
You cannot have small government and large corporations. You will get government run by corporations.
