  • For the first time in channel history Joe and Kramzer are remastering a Listography! They covered Metallica shortly after joining the channel while Jason took the week off. This time all 3 TLMers are ranking the 11 studio albums of Metallica, including the newest one released this week, 72 Seasons.
    ****
The discography of American heavy metal band Metallica includes eleven studio albums, eight live albums, three extended plays, 44 singles, ten video albums, 43 music videos, one soundtrack album, one collaboration album and three box sets. They are a San Francisco-based metal band formed in 1981 by James Hetfield (lead vocals, rhythm guitar) and Lars Ulrich (drums). After several bassist and lead guitarist changes (including Dave Mustaine), the band settled on Cliff Burton and Kirk Hammett, respectively. Metallica started playing locally, releasing their first widely circulated demo, No Life 'til Leather, in 1982. The demo caught the attention of Johny Zazula, who signed Metallica to Megaforce Records. The band released Kill 'Em All in 1983, and the following year they released Ride the Lightning. After Ride the Lightning was released, Metallica left Megaforce and signed to Elektra Records. In March 1986, the band released its third studio album, Master of Puppets, which was Metallica's first album to be certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). While promoting the album, Burton was killed in a bus accident. Jason Newsted was hired as a replacement. The band's first release to feature Newsted was The $5.98 E.P. - Garage Days Re-Revisited, and then followed by ...And Justice for All in August 1988, which peaked at number six on the Billboard 200.
Metallica's fifth, self-titled album, often called The Black Album, was released in 1991 and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. The band embarked on a two-year tour in support of the album. Metallica has since been certified 16 times platinum by the RIAA. Metallica followed with the release of Load and Reload, respectively. After the release of Garage Inc. and S&M, Newsted (who would later join Voivod) departed from the band. Metallica recorded St. Anger without an official bassist (bass parts for the writing & recording during the album sessions were played by the band's long-time producer Bob Rock). Bassist Robert Trujillo joined Metallica in 2003. In 2008, the band released its ninth studio album, Death Magnetic, which was produced by Rick Rubin and distributed through Warner Bros. Records. In April 2009, the band's catalogue was released on the iTunes Store as the Metallica Collection.
In 2013, Metallica released the movie Metallica: Through the Never, together with its soundtrack. Metallica then started writing their tenth studio album, Hardwired... to Self-Destruct, which was released on November 18, 2016. Metallica has sold more than 125 million albums worldwide, with over 67 million records in the United States alone (56.3 million albums since 1991 when SoundScan started tracking actual sales figures)

I just discovered your guys' channel. I love the commentary, the opinions, and the sustained album cover visuals with the numbered rank so a viewer can always know where the focus is no matter what.
I always articulate praise/ criticism whilst attempting to combine subjective taste in music and objectively judging an album based on it's substance.... so I appreciate the three of you doing the same!
Jason and I have a strikingly similar ranking list, so obviously he the *most correct* out of the group. Lol
      Good video, fellas!

There was no bass sound on “injustice for all”…. Still a great album but never understood why that was done …. But I’m definitely more 80s Metallica fan … but I think 72 Seasons is going rise on some peoples picks …. After I go back and listen more .. I may have 72 at 4 …. But for now… 5) I’ve got :::>1)master of puppets 2) Killem all 3) Ride the lightening 4) justice for all. 5) 72 seasons:::::::::;;;;;;;;;;;;; then::::::;;;;>
      6) Black album 7)hardwired to self destruct. 8) death magnetic. 9) load 10)reload 11) st anger
I do not hate the bottom 3 like many do …. St anger was trying to be a simplistic punk/thrash sound … still it could’ve been better …. And I appreciate on load and reload messing with southern blues hard rock sound with thrash … if many did fans did not want the slower hard rock on the black album… they definitely did not want southern rock …. But … i grade for what it is … not bad … still … maybe could’ve been better …. This will not change much except maybe for the 72 album… yes the solos are lazy on some songs … but when it comes to thrash/punk ….. I don’t need a great solo on each song …: just a good memorable hard rocking songs … and I believe there are enough on here to be top 5 … just my opinion for now … but as I said … going listen to all these albums and see how they set after some years… dig

It seems like your biggest criticism of their 90's albums is that it inspired the likes of Nickelback and Staind etc.. It's not Metallica's fault that other bands copied them! I'm not claiming that it's their best material or anything, but I think you've greatly underrated some of their efforts during that decade.

Agree that escape has a great chorus melody. I think it modulates to the relative major, unusual to do in a metal song. I think it was their first attempt at going for a radio hit. So the story goes. Their first attempted sell out. I love it.

There's the first 5 albums and then there's everything else for me. I enjoy the Black Album which I feel is hit and miss more than the Load's because the songwriting was just straight up better. There is nothing on the Load albums even anywhere close to as good as The Unforgiven, Nothing Else Matters, Sad But True and Enter Sandman.

Great choice for a remaster, improving the old listography in every way.
Biggest surprise for me: Jason liking that much Justice's production/overall sound.
I can understand criticising Hetfield's voice and mannerisms, but let's praise to death his amazing rhythm guitar with those god-like downstrokes.
Also, what a great cover band they are. Plenty of songs I discovered because of them.
My ranking 'til mid 90's (not very fond of everything that came after):
    01 Ride The Lightning
    02 Master Of Puppets
    03 Black Album
04 ... And Justice For All
    05 Kill 'em All

    Some assorted notes:
    * "This record is too long." Yeah, that honestly applies to every post-Black Album Metallica album. I swear that by the time the CD era went into full swing, they lost any ability to self-edit. See the amount of filler on the Loads (which would be much improved if you just had one album but with the filler chopped out) and the fact that nearly every song on St. Anger would be a lot more bearable had they been 5 minutes max.
    * Greg Fidelman was the mixing engineer for Death Magnetic. Apparently, he was the one person from that album's production staff that got along with James/Lars, so the two albums after that brought him along to basically co-produce with James and Lars.
    * The biggest problem with The Black Album on relisten is that the album is frontloaded with all of its singles. It probably would be a more engaging album had those songs been spread evenly throughout the album---ie, it's the one Metallica album worthy of a Resequencer (unless you made one that's your own single-album version of the Loads).

Great show! Other than Sabbath I was a bit of a latecomer to Metal. Now I think it's the most interesting music genre of the last 40 years. It's where the spirit of rock & roll went after the Establishment started crushing the music industry. #1 And Justice for All. #2 Kill 'Em All. #3 Ride the Lightning. #4 Master of Puppets. #5 The Black Album. I haven't heard their complete catalog, so my list is brief. I know the Black Album was a big departure and many fans never forgave them, but I still find it to be an enjoyable listen. Justice definitely does have Lars's best drumming. But he was alwayst he one who said that those songs werent' fun to play on tour, and that was one of the big reasons they scaled things back for the black album. A guy who once produced an album from my former band said to us that it's good for a band to always stretch to play just ever so slightly above their actual abilities, and it seems like this is what lars was doing here. It also seems to me that maybe he wasn't really up to the challenge in the long run.

They did the right thing clearly for their career and to keep it interesting by going simpler and more mainstream. It actually took guts and was a very Metallica thing to do. It was after that to me that they became obnoxious and irrelevant. The songs were bad. The playing not interesting. It happens. It’s tough to write rock songs and do something new. Ballads, R&B, jams, etc - from my experience a lot easier than a compelling “rock” song that does something new or exciting .

My favorite album is "Ride The Lightning" still I couldn't disagree more with some comments about the Black Album. "Sad But True" is one of the heaviest and more emblematic Metallica songs. The production is perfect and satisfying and the playing is so efficient, the way every song flows, the groove, the structures are "to the point", the arrangements professional af. "Metallica" is easily the album I enjoy most while driving esp at night time compared with their other albums. This album and Load are the best albums in terms of production as a whole. Of course Master Of Puppets has also a gamebreaking and influential production for it's time.
As far as the " 72 Seasons" is concerned, I feel it's a little bit soon to be judged and especially rated in their discography. They way I see it after many listens is their best one since "Load". But I believe time shall decide.
ps. Regardless the arguments, I enjoyed the video and of course all opinions are respected since they have to do mostly with taste. Take care guys.

Ah, i was wondering when you would get to a redux of one of the old videos, but, I thought it would be one of the ones Jason did on his own. i was quietly hoping for either Deep Purple or The Cure.
But, I get it -- I'm also pretty into metal as I've mentioned in earlier comments, and I consider Metallica to be an essential gateway for myself and many of us who got into loud guitar music in the 90s. I never really thought of the Load/Reload/"butt rock" connection before, but damn, I see it now. I really only care about the 80s albums, myself. I think they're really great, but I also think there's a certain amount of "being in the right place at the right time" involved in their success. I believe that, apart from the early albums of classic bands, the best stuff in metal has usually been pretty far in the underground, and for me, an album like 72 Seasons is really not a big deal when both younger and "legacy" bands that are less well known are still killing it. Voivod is one of the first to come to mind -- practically contemporaries of Metallica; still innovating and still making really cool music after all this time.
Why do james' vocals sound so weird on 72 Seasons? Could it be autotune? i think so. Something is definitely odd with them. It doesn't make sense to me that his voice would be getting higher and higher.
Joe's right that in many ways the band seemed to regress in the 90s. While it may seem weird, it also makes some sense to me -- when people get too comfortable, they stop caring about social issues and such. These things don't matter to them when they're "bigtime" now. I'm not saying that everyone is like that, but think about the reason why many old hippies turn into conservatives after a successful career.
lars is definitely the weak musician in the band by the way. As a drummer myself, it annoys me to hear just how stiff and uninventive he is, *especially* on the latest album, which i gave a good listen to, unlike Hardwired...
    My top four Metallica albums:
    4. Justice
    3. Puppets
    2. Kill 'em All
    1. Ride the Lightning (yes, I was a little sad that noone picked it as their favourite here, but it's ok, all those first three I could accept as #1, in a way).
Also while I love "Orion" musically, I think Metallica's most effective instrumental is "Call of Ktulu" from RTL. Some of the best atmosphere they ever achieved.

I hahd done a post on one of my blogs about 72 Seasons from the perspective of The Simpsons, but I also have commented on Loudwire and put it in the blog too.
"It reminds me of the heavy side of The Black Album (Metallica), but with some old and new ideas. Obviously, we have some thrashers too, but Inamorata sounds like a stoner rock track, but in the mold of early Sabbath. Nice vocal harmony parts on some of the songs too and this album could be the closest one, to be something for every Metallica fan, altho Hardwired…To Self-Destruct also came close."
"Further to that, it is a bit of a continuation of Hardwired…To Self-Destruct, in the sense that they had worked with the same producer and the guitars were not tuned down and the overall sound, is much the same. However, there are more vocal harmonny parts and even bassist Robert Trujillo sings harmony vocals with James on the track You Must Burn."
That is basically how I feel about the new album and I generally like all of what Metallica had done and it even includes St. Anger, as the song reminds me of a washing machines cycle. I know that sounds strange, but if you listen to how a washing machine goes through each of its wash, rinse and repeat cycles, you'll understand what I mean as that song goes through which dynamic shifts.

    1. ..And Justice For All - A masterpiece, their best themes, musically and lyrically
    2. Ride the Lightning - It is hard to fault this, thin production, but every song is theatrical and meaningful
    3. Master of Puppets - a bit sillier lyrically, but the first side is so great, Battery is their best opener.
    4. Garage Inc. - One of the best covers albums of all time
    5. Reload - The songwriting and the sounds they were playing with are very atmospheric and cool, an obvious Soundgarden influence on this album actually works.
    6. Load - Hetfields voice on 'Mama Said' has made me want him to do a country album, and I still want him to do one.
    7. Metallica (Black) - it has too many good songs to be any lower even though I agree it does not flow as well as an album.
    8. Kill em All - It is fine, but basic thrash and I could swap it out with any number of classic thrash albums.
    9. Lulu - basically a Lou Reed album with Metallica just as a backing band, but they stretch themselves to different territory here.
    10. St. Anger - other than Lulu, it is their last creative project. I love the sound of this album, it is revolutionary and weird, but the songs have dumb lyrics and go too long, it is OVERHATED for real.
    11. Hardwired to Self Destruct - it has some really good moments but needs more hooks and drama. Great sounding record though.
    12. 72 Seasons - The songs aren't super distinct and the production is way too PRO TOOLS, everything quantized.
    13. Death Magnetic - the start of them regressing as creative musicians trying to give people what they wanted, and it is so dull.
On a side note, I love the two live albums with the orchestra, great sound, and much more full sounding than their old studio recordings.

Production is a weird subjective thing isn't it? I don't think Ride the LIghtning sounds thin at all. I love the way taht album sounds, big boomy snare and all -- that's a big part of what makes 'For whom the Bell Tolls" for instance sound so good.

Anybody who has issues with the production of Death Magnetic should seek out the Guitar Hero mix, I think it might be here on youtube...the producers of that game recieved all the individual multitracks of the record and were able to actually create a properly mixed version... why nobody in the Metallica camp did that to begin with is just absolutely nuts

It’s not the worst thing but it often sounds more like Korn than Metallica, at least in it’s style. It sounds pretty dated and juvenile now and at the time it wasn’t the most well received and I think that’s for good reason. Cool heavy guitars but not great songwriting.

  • @colgrey438

St. Anger is unfairly maligned. The drum sound really is the only big problem I have with it. It obviously falls short compared to their classic albums but the way people tear it to shreds is too predictable. I know they would never do it but if they re-recorded it, I would buy it lol. I still think there are a few good songs on it. The Unnamed Feeling and All Within My Hands are some of my favorite songs from them. I don't consider myself a Metallica fan so I guess if you were into them when this came out then you would be very disappointed because of how different it is from their previous work.

@@TastesLikeMusic I really hope you can track down the Guitar Hero mix of Death Magnetic, it's much better sounding in every way. Properly mixed, all the muddiness and clipping is completely gone and the instrumentation really brings out the song writing in a much more satisfying way. I always recommend it to anyone who's major beef with DM is the production (which tends to ruin everything else)

Never quite have been able to get into (Re)Load myself and St. Anger is just headache-inducing.
It’s interesting how the best album of that timeframe was Garage Inc., which could’ve been included because CD 1 was a new covers album.

1 - And Justice for All
    2 - Master of Puppets
    3 - Ride the Lightning
    4 - Black Album
    5 - Kill em All
As far as I'm concerned, Metallica only made 5 albums. I choose to believe that they made so much money from the Black Album that they retired and allowed some far less talented lookalikes to assume the name and continue the band. There's only one song on Ride the Lightning I don't like. Master of Puppets is pretty much perfect. And Justice for All is my second favorite album of all time. I love the way it sounds. The lyrics and singing are harsh and angry and the sound of it matches that perfectly. I like about half of each of the other 2 albums. The singing from Hetfield ruins almost all of their other albums for me. Hardwired is the only album after the Black Album that I can stand to listen to at all, but Hammett should be ashamed of himself for the abominations that he calls solos on that album. I try about once a year to listen to St Anger. My record is a little over a minute before I just can't take it anymore and turn it off.

I lean closely to Joe. Love Metallica. They're probably in my Top 20 favourite artists of all time. Definitely my 2nd favourite metal band behind Black Sabbath. They were one of the first three rock-oriented bands I ever got into. "One" was like the first metal song I ever heard and I just kept replaying that on RUclips all the freaking time. When I was trying to lose weight, I would listen to Kill Em All nonstop while working out. They're pretty much responsible for me getting into metal. If Black Sabbath are the grandfathers of modern metal, Metallica are the fathers. For better or worse. I'm surprised Kramzer liked them even more now than he did before. He was pretty harsh on them before, but now he was pretty damn positive. Jason's reaction was to be expected.
    My ranking would be:
    1. Ride the Lightning (5/5)
    2. Kill Em All (5/5)
    3. Master of Puppets (5/5)
    4. The Black Album (4.5/5)
    5. And Justice For All (4.5/5)
    6. Hardwired (4/5)
    7. Load (3.5/5)
    8. Death Magnetic (3.5/5)
    9. Reload (3/5)
    10. 72 Seasons (3/5) - need to give this one a few more spins.
    11. St Anger (2/5).
