I know the point of this was to show how you would model an object, but in this case the object has a specific order to the form. Right now within the form of the capital it looks like the abacus (square part) and echinus below (round part) are all round and then you added a square part on top of the whole thing, which doesn't make sense in classical architecture. I don't mean to sound like I don't appreciate your amazing modeling and generous tutorials; it's also worthwhile learning something about what is being modeled :) keep up the really good work and providing alternative methods to modeling.

I struggled for quite a while trying to figure out how to deal with modeling the fluting on a column with entassis. Design wise, it's one of those things that most people don't even realize they are seeing until it's pointed out. I haven't tried it using SubD yet, but I was able to accomplish it by breaking the fluting into two separate groups. It's definitely not a clean of a model as what Adam has created, but it does hold to the classical proportions given by the Institute for Classical Architecture and Art.

Ahhh, Thank you. I couldn't quite get how the top piece was based on the convoluted images on google. Here is the SUbD model corrected - www.dropbox.com/s/la509avuvry7i4n/Doric%20Column%20Fixed.skp?dl=0

I would also like to add that the taper of the column is not a straight line. It's a shallow curve. But not bowed in the centre, rather more to the bottom. It is know as the "entasis".
However as Troy already pointed.. your work is spectacular. . I do classical architecture in sketch up and this video helped me a lot. I need to work more with plugins. . Your plugins are daunting to me! Could you do a video explaining each one if you haven't done already? Many thanks!

I love these videos. Do you think you could show the community a way to draw entasis on our Doric columns? Basically the column starts the taper 1/3 the way up. Thanks in advance.

It is really frustrating to see you go around like that... Just edit the bits in which you don't know what you're doing or don't do any tutorials... and keep practicing! You sure know your plugins but you should get back to pure SketchUp once in a while to get your sketchup thinking straight.

I haven't edited any of my videos and I don't plan on starting as there are things to be learned from watching me figure stuff out. Have you ever used SUbD or Wrap-R? Have you ever done any quad modeling in Sketchup? If you have you'd know it's always a fight against Sketchup, which isn't built for quads and is always deleting edges. It has nothing to do with "Sketchup thinking" vs plugins. I've been using Sketchup for over 10 years professionally and full time. I could build a column like this in 5 minutes if I wasn't building it for SUbD and texture painting. It's a different scenario and a different mindset.

Winning With Sketchup. Totally agree on sketchup not being made for quads (even though thomthom did an amazing job there!) and that the tuto is there to show how to use it, together with quad tools obviously. However, and I've also been been using SU for more than 10 years, I think that you have a tendency to rely on other plug-ins way more than you should and that require more effort than if you did it with simple native functions. The quads require a different thinking approach in a way yes but you still evolve in sketchup, don't loose that...
