    Mike, I understand why you don’t include stem lengths when talking about reach but it should be mentioned when comparing “new” and “old” geometry often the older bikes had significantly longer stems. To maintain same position on a newer bike that has an ~20mm shorter stem you will need a frame that’s 20mm longer in reach. This could confuse a lot of buyers who want their position on the bike to be the same or slightly more aggressive than their previous bike and are solely basing sizing on the published reach measurements.

    • @ejhayes76
      @ejhayes76 4 года назад +3

      Shorter stem length is somewhat offset by the more common wider bars these days.

    I kinda find it funny that some trail bikes are starting to resemble enduro bikes in being long and slack. I demoed two bikes this last week, a Specialized Enduro and a Stumpy 29er. The Enduro climbed great, was very comfortable in terms of riding position, and so stable and capable on the descent that few people could ever find its limits. However, I took the Enduro on the worst possible trail for it, a tight, technical, rock garden, the length of the Enduro actually made riding that rock garden miserable, the bike is so long your back tire catches stuff you steer around, and it only climbs great ... if the climb is straight, it is not nimble at all. The Enduro makes a terrible trail bike unless your trails are PNW double blacks that are nearly vertical. By comparison the Stumpy 29 was an absolute joy to ride, incredibly nimble, so nimble it almost felt like a 27.5, but was also incredibly confident hitting the rough stuff due to the 29er wheels, and fast as hell. But the Stumpy made my hands hurt because of the short reach, I find the longer reach more comfortable, and even then it is a fine line, the Stumpy was 425 reach, my own Giant Trance is 435 reach and that is enough to get my hands in a more natural position on the descent.

    Great review - I don't see the point in getting longer and slacker, because there are tradeoffs. I hope companies create a whole range of options, maybe even more flip chips to really dial in the perfect geo for your area. I see plenty of slacked out bikes struggle to get back up narrow, techy, switchbacks.

    I think it's interesting people will refer to a bike as "slack", when there seems to be no relative measure of when a bike's head angle is considered slack. A few years ago a 68 degree head angle on a bike, that bike may have been considered "slack". Now that head angle is considered "steep". I wish there were some consistency in what geometry measure a bike is considered "slack" or not...
    Thanks again for the video!

  • @partyongarth0
    @partyongarth0 4 года назад

    Head angle is measured with no weight on the bike without the forks sagged, as soon as you sit on it the head angle steepens so I think we will see longer travel bikes with 60 degree head angles in the near future.

    A missed opportunity here to talk about seat tube angles, effective seat tube angles, seat tube offsets, effective top tube lengths, and how at this point STA is basically just a marketing number because there aren't any standards around how it's reported. Or maybe that's a big enough topic for its own video. As a side note, it's pretty entertaining to see just how big the difference between reported STA and actual STA is on a lot of bikes - 10 degrees isn't uncommon.

    A year later, a timely reminder that a Long, Low And Slack Mountain Bike is still no excuse for the ever increasing stupidly too long Reach measurements that Mondraker et al are pushing on the market. Too many people are riding way too large bikes for their height, even some of those with "ape-like" longish hands proportions.
    You can still enjoy the benefits of a Long, Low And Slack Mountain Bike while at the same time riding one that actually FITS you well.
    Just as most pros do (ie: riding sizes smaller than what their bike company sponsor suggests).

    I want to get a new full suspension with modern geometry but I can’t help but feel gatekept. Anyone else have a similar experience? Hopefully I can sit on a small once the bike shortage is over but it’s making me feel kinda hopeless.

    It seems like everyone glosses over how stack height affects/effects (I’m not smart enough to know the difference) reach numbers. For example, a bike with a long reach/short stack in reality is a lot closer to a bike with a moderate reach/moderate stack by the time you add spacer under the stem to get your handlebars to the correct height. Assuming you don’t want a super low stack height.

    Effective seat angle, perfect way of frigging the geometry chart. About time there was a better way, call it seat angle offset. Horizontal distance from the centre of the bb to the centre of the seat rain at a standardised saddle height based on the size. Oh and bike companies, go and check the meaning of standardise, don't go making a mess!!

    • @mrvwbug4423
      @mrvwbug4423 4 года назад

      and published seat tube angle doesn't even factor in saddle position. Assume a shorter reach trail bike might have the saddle pushed back, and a lot of enduro bikes might run the saddle forward.

  • @Primoz.r
    @Primoz.r 4 года назад

    It's not the reach numbers getting longer that drive steeper seat tube angles. It's the other way around. If you don't want a lazyboy chair of a bike, you need a steep seat tube angle. With a steep seat tube angle, to get a decent effective top tube length and a properly fitting cockpit, you need a long reach. Because the seat is closer (horizontally) to the BB and you need to make up the distance in front of the BB. Which is the reach.
    Which is why reach is such a useless number when it comes to bike fit. It only gives you a useable number for ~5 % of your bike riding time. Unless you're a DH PRO/parkboy. But the 'one bike only' poll shows the vast majority of us actually pedal our bikes.

    Head tube angle depends on the suspension fork's and the front wheel's size. (that's why mullet bikes are a thing now) These are changeable thing.s Long story short: bigger head tube angle -> bigger chainstay length. Two examples: for 26 wheels the ideal suspension fork moves 10 cm, and the chainstay is ~40 cm long, for 27,5 wheels the suspension fork should move 12cm and the ideal chainstay length is ~42 cm. That way you can do the math.

    No issues with assembly for me ruclips.net/user/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L but I could see where some might benefit from using an experienced bike assembler/mechanic. I'm an older rider starting back after a 10 year break. This bike exceeds my capabilities and has been easy to get comfortable riding. I'm mostly on easy trails with almost no street riding and have not been disappointed with the performance of the bike. My fitness level is far below what I previously rode with and because of that the mileage is going on the bike slowly. While I'm losing weight slowly, the bike seems to tolerate my 220 pounds just fine. The bike has been used by several family members ranging from 5'5" - 5'9".

    Bike tech is changing at a dizzying pace. Although there have been some serious upgrades in recent decades, I suspect much of it is market driven. Once geometry maxes out in one direction, I wouldn't be surprised if it started trending back the way it came. Just sayin'...

      Before I saw this comment I said pretty much the same thing. No company can just be stagnant. Tomorrow will be something new and better. But I agree. Geometry will start reversing to keep things interesting and NEW

      Unless you have the wrong bike on the wrong trail. Enduro sleds don't like tight and technical, especially when you aren't carrying a lot of speed.

    Love the bike design ruclips.net/user/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L and functionality. It is hard to align the front tired to center the disk brakes. The brake wheel touches the stationery side of the brake caliper and pad. I aired the tire up to 40 psi as the markings say 40-60psi. Left the house for a few hours and came back to an exploded innertube.All in all it seems to be a good bike. Have not ridden it yet though so that's the max of my knowledge. Update, put a new innertube made sure the tire was set properly and it did the same thing in under 20 minutes as second pic shows.

    Frankly speaking bike industry and shows on youtube make you feel like you need a slack low enduro bike for everything, they shoot all these bikepark videos with endless descends and you think it is so fun to ride such bike. But in reality a lot of people live on plains where you might not need even an XC fully. I have tried an orbea rallon recently and it felt horrible on the flat terrain (not a surprise), it felt like riding a tank, so slow and that stable that it was not fun at all. Like you are in the middle of an endless climb or pedalling against the wind. Fork engages worse, it is less sensitive to small bumps. Long slack bikes are great for speed, competitions and records but not for fun
