Douay-Rheims, Standard Size from Baronius Press

- Baronius Press makes some beautiful Douay-Rheims Bibles. This standard size is no exception. The one shortcoming of this bible is the cover. While it is a beautiful black leather, it is also very stiff and thin. The gold stamping on the cover is quite nice however as it is embossed and won’t rub off easily.
What really sets this Bible apart is the text block. It has been retypeset to the 1899 layout and preserved that historic look it deserves. It is a double column, verse by verse layout with brief book introductions, and notes from Bishop Challoner (1691-1781). The paper is wonderful, and appears to be at least 33GSM, coupled with a sewn binding, and very nice gold edging (ribbons need upgraded) the block itself should hold up well over time.
The content of this bible really make it special as well, it has three Papal encyclicals from Pope Leo XIII on study of the Holy Scriptures, Pope Benedict XV on Jerome of Stridon, Pope Pius XII on promoting biblical studies. It also has 32 wood stamp illustrations between the Old and New Testaments, and redrawn maps in the back. Finally it has historical indexes of the Old and New Testament with lectionaries on the gospels, epistles, and feasts.
While I am not a Catholic, I have a deep appreciation of the Latin Vulgate, and ultimately the Douay Rheims, it’s English translation. I believe that reading and referencing major translations from ancient manuscripts is very important. The Vulgate, the Textus Receptus, the Codex Vaticanus, and the Codex Sinaiticus, along with the Septuagint and the Dead Sea Scrolls truly show us the amazing efforts taken to preserve the word of God, and show us the remarkable unity of each textual source. If you are looking for a traditional Catholic Bible in English, this is a nice option. Click the link below if you want to look at purchasing one for yourself.

That word is just back in those days Called 1 and 2 chronicles thanks for being nice to us Catholics I’ve heard a lot of protestants give a hate speech towards Catholics so thanks a lot for doing the review God bless
Thanks for commenting and for watching! I don’t see a reason to be a meanie. 😃
I love your reviews! You're one of the few of our Protestant brothers who will review Catholic Bibles and it's a big help because I was looking for a review of this very Bible. Thank you!
Thanks! I really enjoy reviewing Catholic Bibles!
My favorite bible by far. Immediately replaced the ribbons. Actually bought a 2nd just to have because I liked it so much.
I had this one rebound.
I ordered the pocket version and can’t wait. I’m Protestant but I like to have the apocrypha cause as Martin Luther said “These books are not held equal to the Scriptures, but are useful and good to read” and were included in every edition of Luther’s Bible published during his lifetime and after. Nice review. If they had a bible that combined Douay-Rheims, Gustave Dore illustrations and red letter in a nice leather binding that would be perfect.
Of course Luther also wanted to throw out completely the book of James and Revelation and added the word 'alone' to we are saved by faith.
Luther was literally a satanic heretic whose primary reason for starting his “reformation” was so he could justify his sexual perversions.
You believe Martin Luther? 😃
How is the pocket size? My concern is that it will be too thick
I am pleased to report that I have as of one month ago bought this Bible for myself! Such a joy to handle and the words just *ring* with a certain sonorous weight to them. This one’s a keeper.
As Catholics we should improve our Bible production quality. We deserve it more than the protestants do. Get to work folks.
I believe better Catholic Bibles are on the horizon.
Why MORE THAN, Brother in Christ??? 🌹🌹🌹
@@brendaboykin3281 I certainly wouldn't say 'deserve', but why is it you think, estranged Sister in Christ? No matter your protestant religion, you followed a man who said, "I have the words of the Lord", and he lead you outside the Church that Christ founded, outside of which there is no salvation. Please, come home. ❤️ Many times our Lord Himself along with Paul warned against following false teachers. We cannot pick and choose our teachers to teach us what we want Truth to be, then religion becomes about us instead of the God we're worshipping.
The history of Christianity is the history of the Catholic Church. The nature of Truth is that there can only be One, and I don't think John Doe cracked it in 1848.
We have become so complacent with the way things are now, with our 'Just pick a Christian religion you like, there are plenty' attitudes, we have forgotten where the arguments even originated. And the simple truth is, in cases like Martin Luther and many other such men, instead of praying for the Church they abandoned Her. That is not what love does. We all know Congress of the United States is a den of rotten villainy, but that does not make anyone doubt the legitimacy of the nation nor does it make anyone try to secede from the union, rather they work with it. Why would it be different with Christ's Church? I tell you, right now the crimes of the bishops of the Catholic Church make Martin Luther's problems of the day look like small potatoes. Yet I could never in my wildest dreams imagine going off and forming my own religion, that's madness!! On whose authority but the enemy's would I do such a thing?
And when it comes to Church Doctrine, like the presence of the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ in the Blessed Eucharist, the wise person knows there are lessons they will not understand, but the fool believes if they don't understand it, it must be false. The fool thinks their reasoning must be able to grasp everything, no wonder Protestants largely reject teachers, for they don't think they need them! The enlightenment of God is a gift we must pray for, if we use our minds to enlighten ourselves human reason alone is destined to fail.
Lengthy I know, but please come home, to the True Church of Christ. :) ❤️ God Bless.
@@brendaboykin3281 because it was the CATHOLIC CHURCH that gave us the canon of scripture.
Thank you so much for this review, thank you.
Thank you for the comment! Blessings.
Thank you for this review! I own this Bible and Baronius is about as good as it gets for a high quality Catholic publisher! :)
I completely agree! I hope to review more items from them in the future.
Parapilomenon is just Chronicles. That is the LXX/Septuagint title meaning 'things left out' implying they are like an appendix to the 'Kings' records.
Fascinating information! I’m still learning some of the terminology.
ParaLipomenon, not ParaPilomenon! :)
Just a bit of a correction: 1 and 2 Esdras in the Douay Rheims are actually the books of Ezra and Nehemiah just under a different name, not the apocryphal books of Esdras.
I stay confused on the Esdras. It’s so confusing there’s a Wikipedia page dedicated to it and I still can’t keep it straight. 🤣
By the way I think I have it straight now. 1 and 2 Esdras are Ezra and Nehemiah and 3 and 4 Esdras are the apocryphal books. But I think there are some editions that mess with the names and keep it confusing.
Thanks for the review! I own the large size of this Douay-Rheims bible from Baronius Press. I was comparing the pages and noticed that they look exactly the same. I was thinking that the pages might be slightly different due to the slightly smaller size of the bible but it seems that Baronius shrank the font size to fit the page. But the letters still seem to be very legible based on your video. This is a well made bible that I highly recommend to people.
I like it so much I sent it off for a rebind!
One of my favorite translations. I have this Bible in my collection and the only negative from me is the small font size. Anything under 11pt is too small for me to read comfortably. A must for anyone , especially Catholics.
They do have a larger print one.
I use the compact one though I have the St. Ignatius regular size. I have used this to death, it has held together extremely well. That leather shows no wear with countless travels, no page loosening through more than one complete reading. Line matched, Smyth-sewn and not glued. I do wish that Catholics like me had the choice of something top drawer like my Schuyler RSV full yapp with Apocrypha. Very, very worth the money. I also own that Biblia Sacra and enjoy it too. When I converted from Presbyterian many years ago it was such an easy transfer to the D-R from the Authorized. Still interesting in the D-R that the Lord's Prayer says, "give us this day our supersubstantial bread...". Always reminds me of a Wonder Bread commercial from the sixties!
That’s good because I got this one rebound since I felt the block was so solid.
beautiful bible
Indeed, I only wish it had a better cover.
The footnotes from Bishop Challoner are quite special - Reread 4 Kings Chapter 4, and then checkout the footnote for verse 31!
(btw, 4 Kings in the Douay is 2 Kings in modern Bibles...)
So he believed Elisha was a type of Christ?
@@anickelsworthbiblereviews Yeah - here's another cool spiritual insight I found - checkout the intro to Joshua (Josue)!
I just received mine today. If the text was a little darker It would be nearly perfect.
Really nice
Yep, I am toying with getting this one rebound.
I have the pocket version love it
This one is off to a rebinder, so it will get reviewed again soon!
Does anyone know someone who makes the original Douay-Rheims bible that doesn't have the Bishop Challoner revisions?
There's the original DR version published in 1635 (the publication year is written in Roman numerals). You can find it online at 'Internet Archives" as a scanned pdf document or a converted text document of the original. The typed version excludes the "summe and partition, the arguments of each book and chapter, and the apologetic annotations" found in the original scanned one.
Just a slight correction, in the Vulgate, the books we today call Ezra and Nehemiah are called 1 and 2 Esdras, and this is kept for the Douay translation. The apocryphal books you were thinking of, called 1 and 2 Esdras in editions of the KJV, are called 3 and 4 Esdras in Latin, and are not part of the Catholic canon.
Thank you. I have since learned this is such a confusing topic there is a Wikipedia page dedicated to it! :)
I think I’m going to go with Boronius Press edition instead, I purchased the Douay Rheims Bible from Saint Benedict Press but it has all sorts of formatting issues and errors in the text, the entire books of psalms are mislabeled and some aren’t labeled at all, verse numbers are off as well. Beautiful looking Bible but it just doesn’t feel right having a Bible with so many errors in it. Returning my copy and getting this edition instead.
When you ordered it, how long did it take to arrive? I ordered it on Friday
It took several days.
4:14 "I don't even know how to say that word" haha, that was funny for real! xD It means the same as "Chronicles"
🤣🤣🤣 someone tells me and I always forget when it’s time to use it.
Can you do a review on the pocket version
Right now with my schedule I only review what is sent to me. Can you give me more info and I can inquire about it. Blessings.
It is basically one I have been looking at and I want to get a good view of what it looks like in person and they aren’t to many reviews on it. It is the compact smaller personal size version but if you can’t do a review on it I totally understand
www.baroniuspress.com/book.php?wid=56&bid=7#tab=tab-1 This one?
Just got mine, its a good size to carry around or to read in bed compared to the bigger chunky study bible. Maybe a downside would be the small font for somep people. I myself don't mind it and i dont have good vision, but I have corrective glasses to fix that so I dont think its an issue, unless you very particular.
May I ask if you are Catholic? I’ve been looking into Catholicism
I am Protestant.
Hello ..could you say where it got printed and the year of publishing???
Printed in India in 2020.
@@anickelsworthbiblereviews thank you!!
Is the Bibles binding sewn?
Yes
@@anickelsworthbiblereviews thanks and God Bless.
What is the fount?
I’ve never seen the font size listed anywhere, I’d guess it at around a 9-10.
It’s pronounced “pahra leh pom in on” being as reading through the comments everyone told you what it’s commonly referred to but wouldn’t tell you how to pronounce it like you asked lol
Thanks! Ha ha.
Are Christ's words in Red in the Gospels?
I’ve never sssn a catholic bible with that feather. No they are not.
TAN book published in 1970 or 1971 a version of the Douay Rheims Bible that is an actual exact copy of the DR published in 1899 and then reprinted in 1914. If you find one it would make a great comparison video with this version by Baronius Press.
I really dislike Bibles who separate verse by verse. It makes me feel like I am reading a dictionary. For some reason all the DR bibles I come across are like this and I do not know why.
I like verse by verse as long as it is double column.
Umm ...so finding verses is easier. But paragraph bibles DO read more flowingly.
