My top ten 1. Black Sabbath - Master of Reality 2. Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind 3. Judas Priest - Killing Machine 4. Metallica - Ride the Lightning 5. Megadeth - Peace Sells, But who's buying 6. Scorpions - Lovedrive 7. Mötley Crüe - Shout at the Devil 8. Motörhead - Bomber 9. Dio - Holy Diver 10. Grand Magus - Triumph and Power
Love your list. I am pleasantly surprised to see Lovedrive. Most people gravitate to other Scorps albums like Blackout, but I, like you, absolutely love Lovedrive. It was my first Scorps album and I bought it at Tower Records in SJ, and I got the German artwork version (which made my teenage heart skip a beat.) :)
10) Motorhead - Another Perfect Day 9) Sword - Metallized 8) Judas Priest - Screaming for Vengeance 7) Ozzy Ozbourne - Diary of a Madman 6) Slipknot - The Gray Chapter 5) Savatage - Power of the Night 4) Anthrax - Among the Living 3) Motorhead - Ace of Spades 2) Iron Maiden - Killers 1) Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell
GNR LOL... In no particular order: Stained Class - Judas Priest Powerslave - Iron Maiden Heaven and Hell - Black Sabbath Ride the Lightning - Metallica Reign in blood - Slayer No Sleep - Motorhead Metal Church - Metal Church Abigail - King Diamond Restless and Wild - Accept Hall of the mountain king - Savatage Decades - Nigthwish
That's a great list. I like your broad sweep of what falls into the 'Metal' genre. I started listening to Heavy Rock and Metal in 1978 or so and was of an age to really enjoy and be influenced by NWOBHM. It was just 'Heavy Rock Music' to me. So that's really what my list is and it would probaly offend Metal purists but these albums certainly contributed towards the many aspects of Metal that we know today. For me I would go with the following in no particular order: Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind, Deep Purple - In Rock, Motorhead - Ace Of Spades, Ozzy - Diary of a Madman, Van Halen 1, Rainbow - Rising, DIo - Holy Diver, Judas Priest - Screaming For Vengeance, Black Sabbath - Paranoid and Metallica - Ride The Lightning
Note: The following is in no particular order. Also, my choices vary from day to day. I tried to pick what I felt was best. In my mind, best doesn't necessarily equal popular. 1. Savatage - "Hall Of The Mountain King" 2. Iron Maiden - "Somewhere In Time" 3. Megadeth - "Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?" 4. Anthrax - "Sound Of White Noise" 5. WASP - "The Headless Children" 6. Dokken - "Tooth And Nail" 7. Znowhite - "Act Of God" 8. Ratt - "Out Of The Cellar" 9. Dio - "Dream Evil"/"Strange Highways" 10. Metallica - "And Justice For All"
Just to point out to the "That's not metal!" posters, back in the late 70s early 80s any band that consistently played loud distorted guitar and had a vocalist that screamed pretty regularly was considered heavy metal by the music press (and fans too, I guess). The crowd at an early 80s Kiss show was indistinguishable from the crowd at an early 80s Iron Maiden show.
Yes, I remember when I first started getting into rock in the 1980s, the likes of Guns n Roses, Iron Maiden, Van Halen, Whitesnake and even Bon Jovi were all described as “heavy metal”. The splintering of rock/metal genres and emergence of ‘classic rock’ happened later, labels have changed over time.
True. But this is 2021 and looking back, we can see that Kiss and Guns 'n Roses sound very different from Ozzy or Priest and we can trance what is currently understood as metal back to the latter and not to the former.
You probably dont give a damn but does anybody know of a tool to get back into an Instagram account..? I was dumb lost my account password. I would appreciate any tips you can give me.
I hate to be that guy and I’m sure someone has already mentioned but “fuel and refuel” is a mistake. I think you meant to say “load” and “reload”. Great list. Thank you for the consistent great content.
My current top 10, could switch around any time (one per band) 1. Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime 2. Fates Warning - Perfect Symmetry 3. Helloween - Keeper of the Seven Keys Part 2 4. Toxik - Think This 5. Blind Guardian - Somewhere Far Beyond 6. Black Sabbath - Heaven & Hell 7. Judas Priest - Stained Class 8. Candlemass - Nightfall 9. Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast 10. Metallica- Master of Puppets Like everyone here this is a hastily put together rankings based on what I listened to in those days with a genuine thought given to quality. There were many other cheesier albums that I liked and others that should be put on the list but my real list would be 90% Black Sabbath and Ozzy
Top 10 according to me! 1. Master of Puppets - Metallica 2. Powerslave - Iron Maiden 3. Blackout - Scorpions 4. British Steel - JP 5. Diary of a Madman - Ozzy 6. Holy Diver - Dio 7. Creatures of the Night - Kiss 8. Women and Children First - VH 9. Def Leppard - High & Dry 10. Tool - Opiate Maybe not in that exact order.

Interesting you list Ozzy's "Ultimate Sin". That's my favorite of Ozzy's solo LPs as well... withOUT Randy Rhodes! Yet Ozzy himself does NOT have too high an opinion of that album...!
1. Motorhead : ace of spades 2. Saxon : wheels of steel 3. Iron Maiden : Iron Maiden 4. Black Sabbath : Heaven and Hell 5. UFO: Strangers in the night 6. Ozzy Osbourne : Diary of a madman 7. Scorpions : Blackout 8. Rammstein : Mutter 9. AC/DC : highway to hell 10. Rainbow : Rising
Metal has never been my thing, but I always enjoy whatever you're talking about. I do listen to Deep Purple in Rock quite a bit. A friend had that album up at camp in '69 when we were 11 and I couldn't stand it. But he passed away too young and now I listen to it, and enjoy it, with fondest in his memory of the many summers we shared at camp.
Great list. Here's what I would posit. 1. Metallica: Master of Puppets 2. Iron Maiden: Piece of Mind 3. Black Sabbath: Volume IV 4. Mercyful Fate: Don't Break the Oath 5. Slayer: Reign in Blood 6. Pantera: Vulgar Display of Power 7. Black Sabbath: Heaven and Hell 8. System of a Down: Toxicity 9. Carcass: Heartwork 10. King Diamond: Abigail
Can't bring it down to just 10. I was born in '56 (same year as rock n' roll, baby!..;-)) and grew up with music from the fifties, sixties and seventies and beyond. Witnessed all of the bands in their heydays developing and becoming the greats they were. Alas, after about '75/6 it slowly dribbled away and limped into the 80s. Let's forget about the 80's as a favor to me, please...;-) I agreed with Ken Hensley when he said, "the heavy thing gets, well, heavy and you need something else." Another great review, dude. Rock on...;-)
1. Black Sabbath- Vol.4 2. Judas Priest- Stained Class 3. Ozzy Osbourne- Diary of a Madman 4. Iron Maiden- Somewhere in Time 5. Metallica- Ride the Lightning 6. Motorhead- Overkill 7. Megadeth- Peace Sells.. but Who's Buying? 8. Rainbow- Rising 9. Scorpions- Lovedrive 10. Saxon- Wheels of Steel
My list of 10 (subject to change) : 1) Black Sabbath: Paranoid 2) Electric Wizard: Dopethrone 3) Voivod: Dimension Hatross 4) Metallica: Master Of Puppets 5) Sepultura: Chaos A.D. 6) Godflesh: Streetcleaner 7) Neurosis: Enemy Of The Sun 8) Slayer: South Of Heaven 9) Mastodon: Leviathan 10) System Of A Down: Toxicity

Dream Theater: "Metropolis Part 2: Scenes from a Memory" 7. Megadeath: "Peace Sells..." 8. Powerwolf: "The Sacrament of Sin" 9. Judas Priest: "Screaming for Vengence" 10. Ozzy Osbourne: "Blizzard of Ozz"

1. Iron Maiden -- Killers 2. Iron Maiden -- Iron Maiden 3. UFO -- Strangers in the Night 4. Blue Oyster Cult -- Cultosaurus Erectus 5. Black Sabbath -- Heavy and Hell 6. Judas Priest -- Point of Entry
Hi, just discovered your channel, thank you for posting this my friend. It was very enjoyable, we both agree that the best Maiden album is 'Piece of Mind' & Sabbaths' 'Master of Reality' was their pinnacle. However if AC/DC are considered "Metal" then I'm going for 'Highway to Hell' and would remove Kiss and replace them with either Queensryche - 'Operation Mindcrime' or Faith No More - 'Angel Dust' Would also choose 'Ride the Lightning' over the Black album. Thanks again.
10. Tool - Ænima 9. Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss 8. Pyromania - Def Leppard 7. Human - Death 6. Arise - Sepultura 5. Screaming for Vengeance - Judas Priest 4. Metallica - Metallica 3. Tool - Fear Innoculum 2. Somewhere in Time - Iron Maiden 1. Master of Puppets - Metallica
Excellent vid. I do despair though that a gentleman THIS intelligent and THIS articulate even admits to the existence of the abomination referred to as Kiss. Still, a very informative video. My vote for #1 would go to Black Sabbath's debut. Side One of that Vinyl disc has not one single low point. Bill Ward shines especially on The Wizard. Cheers!
Great choices! I’m with you, I like a little melody in my metal. Here are ten of my favorite metal albums you didn’t list, in no particular order (and limiting myself to one per band): Ride the Lightning (Metallica) Countdown to Extinction (Megadeth) Symbol of Salvation (Armored Saint) (if I could only recommend one album from this list, this would be it - any metal fan who hasn’t heard this gem should definitely give it a few spins) Blackout (Scorpions) Mandylion (The Gathering) (not my favorite of their albums, but easily my favorite from their metal era) Holy Diver (Dio) Lightning to the Nations (Diamond Head) No More Tears (Ozzy Osbourne) The Unforgiving (Within Temptation) Number of the Beast (Iron Maiden) (though I freely admit I need to listen to more Maiden)
Top Metal albums 1) Opeth Ghost Reveries 2) Death Symbolic 3) Iron Maiden Piece of Mind 4) Candlemss Epicus 5) Metallica Master of Puppets 6) Judas Priest Painkiller 7) Slayer Reign in Blood 8) Megadeth Rust in Peace 9) Queensryche Operation Mindcrime 10) Dream Theater Images and Words
Savatage: Gutter Ballet Metallica: Ride the Lightning Metal Church: S/T Judas Priest: Sad Wings of Destiny Iron Maiden: S/T Savage: Loose n' Lethal Queensryche: The Warning Black Sabbath: Heaven and He'll Paranoid Saxon: Strong Arm of the Law
Enjoying everybody's lists! Iron Maiden: Iron Maiden Metallica: And Justice for All... Mercyful Fate: Don't Break The Oath Megadeth: Rust In Peace Black Sabbath: (take yer pick, I like Sabbath Bloody Sabbath) Pantera: Cowboys From Hell Slayer: Reign In Blood Death: Scream Bloody Gore Sepultura: Beneath The Remains Overkill: Horrorscope Hon Mention: Among The Living (Anthrax), Operation Mindcrime (Queensryche), The Real Thing (Faith No More), Handle With Care (Nuclear Assault), A Night at The Opera (Blind Guardian), Heartwork (Carcass)
1. Deep Purple - Burn. 2. Black Sabbath - Vol 4. 3. Iron Maiden - Powerslave 4. Judas Priest - British Steel. 5. AC/DC - Back in Black. 6. Porcupine Tree - In Absentia. 7. Queensryche - Operation Mind Crime. 8. Dokken - Tooth & Nail. 9. Van Halen - Van Halen. 10. Twisted Sister - Stay Hungry.
Appetite is Glam Metal, so I would include it. The bigger problem is Deep Purple (proto-Metal sure, but not Metal) and AC/DC (purely Hard Rock). I also wouldn't consider KISS, either. They may be proto-Glam Metal but they are still a Glam Rock band.
Some Miraculous Metal albums not mentioned : Black Sabbath - Sabotage Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath Black Sabbath - Mob Rules Judas Priest - Defenders of the Faith Blue Oyster Cult - Cultosaurus Erectus Blue Oyster Cult - Heaven Forbid Alice Cooper - Hey Stoopid Ozzy - No More Tears Ozzy- Bark at the Moon
In no particular order: 10 - Black Sabbath - Mob Rules 9 - Metallica - Ride the Lightning 8 - Dio - Holy Diver 7 - Judas Priest - Stained Class 6 - Savatage - Hall of the Mountain King 5 - Kiss - Animalize 4 - Motörhead - Bastards 3 - Megadeth - Rust in Peace 2 - Saxon - Power and the Glory 1 - Iron Maiden - Powerslave
I am not one to listen to music by categories and I never cared much about the "Heavy Metal" etc as genre BUT there are surely many bands that I love that fall into this direction more or less. I am a child of the time where this music was "invented" without the name still (although Born to be Wild had already dropped the phrase). Anyway: 1. Deep Purple - Machine Head 2. Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath 3. Alice Cooper - Killer 4. Motorhead - Ace of Spades 5. Rainbow - Rising 6. Clash - Give 'em Enough Rope (Most people put Clash into the "punk" bin, but the band has always been much more and on this album Sandy Pearlman made them sound like a classic Hard/Heavy rock band with great songs) 7. Guns 'n' Roses - Appetite for Destruction 8. Mountain - Climbing 9. Iggy & the Stooges - Raw Power 10. Uriah Heep - Very 'eavy Very 'umble
I would've put Queensrÿche's Operation: Mindcrime high on the list. I also would've included a Rammstein album, maybe Sehnsucht. And for something somewhat obscure, Cynic's first album, Focus, is incredible prog metal. Those would probably be my top three, in no particular order. Unless the This Is Spinal Tap soundtrack is allowed, heh. IMHO everything Metallica put out after ...And Justice For All sucked. Creatures of the Night is an odd pick too - I would've gone with Destroyer or Dressed to Kill.
10. Seventh son of a seventh son 9. Sabotage 8. Painkiller 7. Ride the lighting 6. Images and words 5. Rust in peace 4. Sabbath bloody sabbath 3. South of Heaven 2. Cowboys from Hell 1. Blizzard of ozz
Here are some of my favourites, in no particular order ... 'Wheels of Steel' and 'Strong Arm of the Law' ( both by Saxon), 'Give Us a Wink' ( Sweet) , 'Animal Magnetism' ( Scorpions) , 'No Mean City' ( Nazareth) and 'Thunder and Lightning' ( Thin Lizzy).
Good picks, though I feel "Appetite for Destruction" is not accurate here. It's not exactly heavy. My list: 1. Europe "Final Countdown" 2. Village People "The best of' 3. The Jackson 5 "Christmas" 4. Milli Vanilli "Girl you know it's true" 5. Boney M. "Take the heat off me" 6. Emerson, Lake and Palmer "Love Beach". 7. Bananarama "Please yourself". And so on. I'm too tired now to keep writing...
Believe it or not, Final Countdown (album not song) has some good heavy tunes, though more on Melodic Metal/Glam side of things In its place I’d propose you put in some Nickelback, who are the greatest atmospheric blackened death doom sludge post drone metal band of all time........... .......yea no
10. Scorpions - Love at first Sting 9. Black Sabbath - Mob Rules 8. Metallica - Black Album 7. Judas Priest - British Steel 6. Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind 5. Dio - Holy Diver 4. Saxon - Strong Arm of the Law 3. Shinedown - The Sound of Madeness 2. Ozzy Osbourne - Diary of a Madman 1. Pearl Jam - VS
1/ Maiden - Piece of Mind 2/ Sabbath - Heaven and Hell 3/ Priest - Sad Wings of Destiny 4/ Megadeth - Rust in Peace 5/ Dickinson - The Chemical Wedding \m/ nuff said \m/
When I was in jr high school,me and a friend skipped school to attend a recording symposium...the big album at the time was "Back in Black"....we were able to hear the isolated guitar tracks...everybody was taken aback at how clean the guitars were...a bit overdriven but not distorted....to this day ..I gotta tel my guitarists "less fuzz mate"....
Ok here's mine: Paranoid - Black Sabbath, Machine Head - Deep Purple, British steel - Judas Priest, Holy Diver - Dio, Destroyer - Kiss, Led Zeppelin II, Alice Cooper - Killer, UFO _ Phenomenon, Number of the Beast - Iron Maiden
Some of my favorites - Master of Puppets, Holy Diver, Mob Rules, Peace Sells, Dream Theater's Train of Thought, and my favorite......Firepower from Judas Priest
Fuel and re-fuel lol ok good ear I almost missed that. Instead of load and re-load. He gets a pass for that. This man has forgotten more about music then we will ever learn.
My Top 10 hard rock/heavy metal albums in no particular order: Paranoid, Black Sabbath Screaming for Vengeance, Judas Priest Piece of Mind, Iron Maiden Back in Black, AC/DC Van Halen, Van Halen Physical Graffiti, Led Zeppelin Animal Magnetism, Scorpions Shout at the Devil, Motley Crue Appetite for Destruction, Guns n' Roses and my favorite album that no one's ever heard... '''Sunrise on the Sufferbus, Masters of Reality!
On In Rock, I like Living Wreck. Hardly a world changing track but it just does something to me. It's one of those tracks that could be considered a filler but there are no fillers on that album. It's like everyone gets a gig on that track. It's a great example of a B side track excellence - the other B tracks not withstanding BTW.
My favorite Heavy Metal albums are: Megadeth-Peace Sells....But Who’s Buying. Pantera-Cowboys From Hell. Metallica-Ride The Lightening, Master of Puppets, and....And Justice For All. Anthrax-Among The Living, & Slayer-South Of Heaven.
some of my fav heavy albums megadeth - peace sells all though the final kill remaster of the first album competes metallica - ride the lightning or no life til leather Danzig 1, 4 or 666 Dri - thrashzone judas priest - british steel thin lizzy - thunder and lightning or renegade gwar - scumdogs , toilet earth or must be destroyed motley crue -shout at the devil nin - downward spiral pantera - cowboys from hell
Another entertaining video. Keep on keeping on! It's really hard to pick favorites among your most beloved children, but I threw together a list just for the hell of it (pun intended!). One can always debate where Heavy Metal begins and ends, but since you did it, I've included some proto-metal bands, but left out any Trash or Death metal bands as these are distinctly more aggressive and modern as far as I'm concerned, hence no Metallica, Megadeth, Opeth etc. 1) Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell (To me the perfect bridge between the 70s and 80s Metal by the most influential band of the genera), 2) Black Sabbath - Vol. 4 (To me this is the peak of their 70s catalog, and unlike their first three albums, this is one I keep playing and haven't tired of. Songwriting is killer, and the doomy sound is perfected. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is a very close second, but not as HEAVY in my mind); 3) Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard of Ozz (This band were also a phenomenal force and influenced the direction of metal in the 1980s alongside the NWOBHM bands. Most of all Randy Rhoads paved the way for stronger classical influences and professional musicianship in metal); 4) Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (I could have picked any of Iron Maiden's albums between 1982-88, but this is my favorite, probably because it's their most progressive effort, while still maintaining their trademark full throttle bass and drums, criminally catchy choruses and dual guitar solos), 5) Dio - Dream Evil (The greatest voice in Heavy Metal were never as good solo as he were in Rainbow and his first stint with Sabbath. Nevertheless, Dream Evil is in my opinion his best album, and nothing is more 80s metal to me than Dio); 6) Judas Priest - Stained Class (It's my favorite Judas Priest album. Maybe not full blooded metal, but I think they were at their best during the late 70s. Their songwriting was stellar, Halford's voice supreme, and the "dry" clean sound is to die for), 7) Dream Theater - Awake (When heavy metal as we knew it faded from the headlines in the 90s, Dream Theater were on of the few bands with strong 80s metal influences to gain success with their uncool high pitched vocals and over the top guitar shredding. Awake is their magnum opus in my opinion, striking the perfect balance between 1980s melodic metal and progressive rock as we knew it from the most virtuous bands of the 70s, ELP, Yes and Rush especially), 8) W.A.S.P. - The Crimson Idol (Blackie Lawless did shock rock like only Americans could do it. Glamourous, yet horrifying like a John Carpenter movie. When the autobiographical Crimson Idol was released heavy metal was in decline and the grunge era sadly on the rise. That might be the reason why WASP and this album never achieved iconic status, but to me it is on of the best metal albums, and concept albums, ever made); 9) Budgie - Never Turn Your Back on a Friend (Almost unknown outside of nerdy metal circles, Budgie was one of the earliest metal bands, playing fast paced proto-metal somewhere in the landscape between Sabbath and Purple. This album from 1973 is by far their best and has kept a place in my Top 10 for a long time). 10) Symphony X - The Odyssey (Might also be too progressive to fit, but in my opinion, SX is the peak of traditional heavy metal. Their neo-classical metal, drawing heavily on the style of Ritchie Blackmore, Randy Rhoads and Yngwie Malmsteen, is a potpourri of everything that came before. Catchy songwriting, progressive influences, masculine vocals with growling lows and screaming highs, blistering fast guitar and keyboard solos, and an intense rhythm and bass section).
10. Mercyful Fate - Melissa 9. Metallica - Ride The Lightning 8. Slayer - Show No Mercy 7. Motörhead - Bomber 6. Saxon - Power and the Glory 5. Accept - Balls To The Wall 4. Anthrax - Fistful of Metal 3. Dio - Holy Diver 2. Judas Priest - Screaming For Vengeance 1. Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast
Yes, much of what was called heavy metal in the old days is now called hard rock. I do not think some younger people understand the changes that happened in metal music in the 80's. How that changed how we even see what is metal. I remember thinking Ozzy and AC DC were definitely heavy metal back in the day.
I agree. Back in the mid 70s the terms meant the same but I learned from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal onwards that metal was too much for me. I was never a Sabbath fan and things just got more intense as metal split into multiple directions.
They still are metal. Just cuz there's heavier music now doesn't mean that the definition changes, or that they get to change it. They just need to suck it up and quit whining.
@@paulsimister944 I like some of the heavier stuff. Being a christian, I was never into Black Sabbath until recently. I akways knew the so called satan worshipping bands were always appealing to a gimmick but I still did not pick up an listen to that kind of stuff too often. AC DC was risky enough. Anyways I like them now. The old stuff. I am not really into thrash metal but like some of it. But a lot of what was once considered heavy metal is now called hard rock.
@@independenceltd. I tend to agree. It dos not really bother me what you call music as long as it is good. AC DC, Ozzy, Rush, Van Halen, etc. all made some great music. If some want to call some of their stuff heavy metal or hard rock oh wll. It is still great music. I guess good definitions of genre really help when people are discussing the music and the influences and what it influenced. Personally I would say VH and Rush are in differently subgenres of hard rock while Ozzy and AC DC should be in some subgenre of heavy metal. But if you want to call AC DC hard rock then that is fine. Ozzy seems to be HM just like Sabaath.

I know I’m late to comment, I just wanted to say this is the first video I’ve seen from you and as a younger Metalhead I find it interesting how differently we view the term “Heavy Metal” to those who were around at the time it was emerging (not saying anyone’s right or wrong just that I find it interesting) and also that I admire how articulate you are in describing each choice. Here is mine (from a younger POV of the genre), some aren’t even from the 20th century: 1. Judas Priest - Painkiller 2. Black Sabbath - Paranoid 3. Iron Maiden - Powerslave 4. Judas Priest - Defenders of the Faith 5. Motörhead - Inferno 6. Judas Priest - Firepower 7. Iron Maiden - Brave New World 8. Saxon - Lionheart 9. Heaven & Hell - The Devil You Know 10. Savatage - Hall of the Mountain King Since imo Metal lists should go up to eleven... 😁 11. Grim Reaper - See You in Hell
When I was kid bands with long hair and loud guitar based music was deemed heavy metal. Believe it or not, Status Quo were classed as metal. I think all the different sub genres of metal weren't even discussed until post-Metallica when the term 'thrash' entered the lexicon.
Alternates to some on your list.. Judas Priest - Stained Class, Ozzy - Diary of a Mad Man, Metallica - Ride The Lightning, AC / DC - Highway to Hell , Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast, Black Sabbath - Mob Rules
Great video. Thanks. My definition of "heavy metal" is somewhat narrow so I don't include DP, LZ, AC/DC, Van Halen, and a few others. Hard to shrink it to just 10. 10. Shout at the Devil - Motley Crue 9.Creatures of the Night - KISS 8. Peace Sells But Who's Buying - Megadeth 7. Diary of a Madman - Ozzy 6. Heaven and Hell - Black Sabbath 5. British Steel - Judas Priest 4. Black Album - Metallica (agree 100%...it's commercial but it's my favorite Metallica album) 3. Powerslave - Iron Maiden 2. Paranoid - Black Sabbath 1. Screaming for Vengeance - Judas Priest
In no particular order : Reign in blood- Slayer, master of puppets- Metallica, operation mindcrime- Queensrhyche, number of the beast- iron maiden, appetite for destruction- guns n roses, blackout in the red room-love/hate, peace sells but who’s buying- megadeth, gutter ballet- savatage, beneath the remains- sepultura, badmotorfinger- soundgarden

I really have to highlight the point you made on loving melody in your metal. Absuloutely no way a contradiction in terms. People forever asked me why, with all the rock/metal/thrash that I banged the drum for, why I wasn't nearly so taken with Prodigy and punk in particular. I guess it comes down to that M word with me also at the end of the day. No more oxymoron than it is an Oxo cube. Can't agree more too with your reference to Maiden's use of literature and history to act as a storyboard. Not surly dirges on the greasy pole of teenage angst, but instead timeless themes that struck a chord with me through Seventh Son, in much the same as Rush's Necromancer and even Clanned's The Hooded Man did to my younger self. Overall, much to agree on as a bloke banging on the door of 50, and much to conscientiously mull over that hasn't graced my record player in quite literally decades. Good stuff!
Really interesting video. For me there are so many genres & sub-genres, but thanks anyway! Here's my top 10 1. Judas Priest - Sin After Sin 2. Iron Maiden - Powerslave 3. Blue Oyster Cult - Fire Of Unknown Origin 4. Scorpions - Intrance 5. Black Sabbath - Sabotage 6. Budgie - Night Flight 7. The Michael Shenker Group - Assault Attack 8. Torme - Back To Babylon 9. Alcatrazz - Disturbing The Peace 10. Motorhead - Ace Of Spades
I'd completely forgotten that Ace was on the cover of Creatures of the Night. Saw them on that tour with Vinnie and always thought of him (is it her now?) as the principal six-stringer on that record. And my word, I've just read that Robben Ford plays on it.
In no certain order... Slayer - South of Heaven DBC - Universe Voivod - Dimension Hatross Megadeth - Rust in Peace Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss Death Angel - Act III Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime Watchtower - Control & Resistance Seiges Even - Steps Danzig - Danzig
Interesting list, not typical, which is good. I personally think 'Diary of a Madman' is underrated and is better produced, with more variety and better songs. Bob Daisley was the man.
Great choices classic album review 1)Guns n Roses: Appetite 2)Slayer: Reign in blood 3)Black sabbath: Sabotage 4)Metallica: Ride the lightning 5)Iron maiden: Power slave 6)Megadeth: countdown to extinction 7)Alice in chains: Dirt ( I know, grunge if you want to split hairs ) 8)Slipknot: debut 9)soundgarden: badmotorfinger (same as 7 but it is heavy🤟) 10)Rainbow: Rising
Love your reviews - so thoughtful and eloquent
My top ten:

Staz Johnson Good list. Not a bad one amongst them.
Killers is possibly my favourite metal album apart from Reign In Blood, it depends what mood you're in!🏴
You mean "Hell Bent For Leather", and it needs to be #1
@@michaelsteven1090 No, in the UK the album was called 'Killing Machine', apparently that title was deemed too much for the US market.
My top ten
1. Black Sabbath - Master of Reality
2. Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind
3. Judas Priest - Killing Machine
4. Metallica - Ride the Lightning
5. Megadeth - Peace Sells, But who's buying
6. Scorpions - Lovedrive
7. Mötley Crüe - Shout at the Devil
8. Motörhead - Bomber
9. Dio - Holy Diver
What is " Killing Machine" by Judas Priest?..never heard that album.
@@michaelsteven1090 It´s their album from 1979, think it was called "Hell bent for leather" in the US but "Killing Machine" in Europe.
@@Krautline yup, it was "Hell bent....." in the US..Thanks for clarifying..(btw, one of my all time favorite records)
10) Motorhead - Another Perfect Day
9) Sword - Metallized
8) Judas Priest - Screaming for Vengeance
7) Ozzy Ozbourne - Diary of a Madman
6) Slipknot - The Gray Chapter
5) Savatage - Power of the Night
4) Anthrax - Among the Living
3) Motorhead - Ace of Spades
2) Iron Maiden - Killers
1) Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell
Powerrr
Ha, Slapknuts, hahahahahaha
GNR LOL...
In no particular order:
Stained Class - Judas Priest
Powerslave - Iron Maiden
Heaven and Hell - Black Sabbath
Ride the Lightning - Metallica
Reign in blood - Slayer
No Sleep - Motorhead
Metal Church - Metal Church
Abigail - King Diamond
Restless and Wild - Accept
Hall of the mountain king - Savatage
Decades - Nigthwish
I agree except with the Judas Priest one. Painkiller is brutal. Metal churches 1st 3 albums are some of my favorite albums ever. One of my fav bands
1. Savatage - "Hall Of The Mountain King"
2. Iron Maiden - "Somewhere In Time"
3. Megadeth - "Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?"
4. Anthrax - "Sound Of White Noise"
5. WASP - "The Headless Children"
6. Dokken - "Tooth And Nail"
7. Znowhite - "Act Of God"
8. Ratt - "Out Of The Cellar"
9. Dio - "Dream Evil"/"Strange Highways"
Your are absolutely correct.
@Cohen Harley Instablaster ;)
Rocket Queen is the best track on Appetite For Destruction for me... a fantastic song and a brilliant ending for a brilliant album !!
It absolutely is.
I hate to be that guy and I’m sure someone has already mentioned but “fuel and refuel” is a mistake. I think you meant to say “load” and “reload”.
Great list. Thank you for the consistent great content.
My current top 10, could switch around any time (one per band)
1. Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime
2. Fates Warning - Perfect Symmetry
3. Helloween - Keeper of the Seven Keys Part 2
4. Toxik - Think This
5. Blind Guardian - Somewhere Far Beyond
6. Black Sabbath - Heaven & Hell

9. Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast
10. Dio - Dream Evil
1. Deep Purple - Come taste the band
2. Rainbow - Rising
3. Point Blank - Airplay

5. BTO - Freeways
6. Jethro Tull - A
7. Uriah Heep - Fallen Angel
8. Nazareth - Loud 'N' Proud
9. King's X - Dogman
10. Kansas - Kansas
Black sabbath heaven and hell is my fav heavy rock album.
A genuinely classic album that was superbly recorded.
Dio’s vocals and lyrics are sublime
Love your comment on the Back in Black cover, "... a blank canvass on which the band forge a new manifesto for moving forward.".... very well said.
Nazareth's "Hair of the Dog" was a surprisingly great "Heavy Metal" sounding record from a band not typically associated with "Heavy Metal"
Nazareth yeaaahhh perfect
Love that album! I have "Whiskey Drinkin' Woman" engraved in my brain... it just won't leave (thankfully) : )
Mine
10. Scorpions-Virgin Killer
9. UFO-No Heavy Petting

5. Ozzy-Blizzard of Oz
4. Black Sabbath-Paranoid
3. Van Halen- Fair Warning
2. AC/DC- Back in Black
1. Metallica- Master of Puppets
Like everyone here this is a hastily put together rankings based on what I listened to in those days with a genuine thought given to quality. There were many other cheesier albums that I liked and others that should be put on the list but my real list would be 90% Black Sabbath and Ozzy
Top 10 according to me!

4. British Steel - JP
5. Diary of a Madman - Ozzy

10. - Quiet Riot - Metal Health
Interesting you list Ozzy's "Ultimate Sin". That's my favorite of Ozzy's solo LPs as well... withOUT Randy Rhodes! Yet Ozzy himself does NOT have too high an opinion of that album...!
Rainbow Rising is my #1 - Not sure if they are metal or not. I also like 2112 anyday...
Rainbow Rising pretty much invented power metal, awesome album.
There's a Dio singing, nothing can be more metal than that.
All 3 studio albums by Rainbow with Dio are great \,,/
Rainbow’s Rising is Power Metal & Rush’s 2112 is Progressive Rock.
STARGAZER !!!
1. Motorhead : ace of spades

1. Metallica: Master of Puppets
2. Iron Maiden: Piece of Mind
3. Black Sabbath: Volume IV
4. Mercyful Fate: Don't Break the Oath
5. Slayer: Reign in Blood
6. Pantera: Vulgar Display of Power
7. Black Sabbath: Heaven and Hell
8. System of a Down: Toxicity
9. Carcass: Heartwork
Rock on...;-)
1. Black Sabbath- Vol.4
2. Judas Priest- Stained Class
3. Ozzy Osbourne- Diary of a Madman

Another great list, I definitely need to check out some of these album's
Thank you for the inclusion of Creatures of the Night. It's one of the most criminally overlooked rock albums of any genre, IMHO.
Totally agree with your choice for # 1. Iron Maiden leaves a lot of metal bands in the dust in terms of instrumental chops and breadth of ideas.
10. Tool - Ænima
9. Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss
8. Pyromania - Def Leppard
7. Human - Death
6. Arise - Sepultura
5. Screaming for Vengeance - Judas Priest
4. Metallica - Metallica
3. Tool - Fear Innoculum
2. Somewhere in Time - Iron Maiden
Here are ten of my favorite metal albums you didn’t list, in no particular order (and limiting myself to one per band):
Ride the Lightning (Metallica)
Countdown to Extinction (Megadeth)
Symbol of Salvation (Armored Saint) (if I could only recommend one album from this list, this would be it - any metal fan who hasn’t heard this gem should definitely give it a few spins)
Blackout (Scorpions)
Mandylion (The Gathering) (not my favorite of their albums, but easily my favorite from their metal era)
Holy Diver (Dio)
Lightning to the Nations (Diamond Head)
No More Tears (Ozzy Osbourne)
The Unforgiving (Within Temptation)
Number of the Beast (Iron Maiden) (though I freely admit I need to listen to more Maiden)
Top Metal albums
1) Opeth Ghost Reveries
2) Death Symbolic
3) Iron Maiden Piece of Mind
4) Candlemss Epicus
5) Metallica Master of Puppets
6) Judas Priest Painkiller
7) Slayer Reign in Blood
8) Megadeth Rust in Peace
9) Queensryche Operation Mindcrime
10) Dream Theater Images and Words
Yeah, thanks for your time. Very close to my own choices and glad to see Piece of mind in the first position.
My pleasure!

Metal Church: S/T
Judas Priest: Sad Wings of Destiny
Iron Maiden: S/T

5. AC/DC - Back in Black.
6. Porcupine Tree - In Absentia.
7. Queensryche - Operation Mind Crime.
8. Dokken - Tooth & Nail.
9. Van Halen - Van Halen.
10. Twisted Sister - Stay Hungry.
Would've said 'Appetite for destruction' was a rock rather than metal album, but however.
GR, KISS, DEEP PURPLE, AC/DC all no Metal. Good Rock and Hardrock Albums. But all Albums Top 10?
In the 80s no one ever doubted GnR were metal
Pop.
Some Miraculous Metal albums not mentioned :
Black Sabbath - Sabotage
Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Black Sabbath - Mob Rules
Judas Priest - Defenders of the Faith
Blue Oyster Cult - Cultosaurus Erectus
Blue Oyster Cult - Heaven Forbid
Alice Cooper - Hey Stoopid
Ozzy - No More Tears
Ozzy- Bark at the Moon
In no particular order:
10 - Black Sabbath - Mob Rules
9 - Metallica - Ride the Lightning
8 - Dio - Holy Diver
7 - Judas Priest - Stained Class
6 - Savatage - Hall of the Mountain King
5 - Kiss - Animalize
4 - Motörhead - Bastards
3 - Megadeth - Rust in Peace
2 - Saxon - Power and the Glory
1 - Iron Maiden - Powerslave
1. Iron Maiden: "Piece of Mind"
2. Megadeth "Peace sells..."
3. Helloween "Walls of Jericho"
4. Savatage "Gutter Ballet"
5. Scorpions "Animal Magnetism"
I am not one to listen to music by categories and I never cared much about the "Heavy Metal" etc as genre BUT there are surely many bands that I love that fall into this direction more or less. I am a child of the time where this music was "invented" without the name still (although Born to be Wild had already dropped the phrase). Anyway:
1. Deep Purple - Machine Head
2. Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
3. Alice Cooper - Killer
4. Motorhead - Ace of Spades
5. Rainbow - Rising
6. Clash - Give 'em Enough Rope (Most people put Clash into the "punk" bin, but the band has always been much more and on this album Sandy Pearlman made them sound like a classic Hard/Heavy rock band with great songs)
7. Guns 'n' Roses - Appetite for Destruction
8. Mountain - Climbing
9. Iggy & the Stooges - Raw Power
10. Uriah Heep - Very 'eavy Very 'umble
Great list! 🦾
Kiss are awful, Operation, Mindcrime is a masterpiece
Great video!!!
Great list!
We definitely need a video for ranking Beatles albums
10. Seventh son of a seventh son
9. Sabotage
8. Painkiller
7. Ride the lighting
6. Images and words
5. Rust in peace
4. Sabbath bloody sabbath

@@classicalbum already did that. Your videos are great, keep going! 🤘🏻
I thought it was just me in the world regarding those two 1980 Saxon albums.
@@mjp8648 Denim and Leather is also a great Saxon album IMO and the other albums featuring Quinn and Oliver contain fine heavy songs.
Good picks, though I feel "Appetite for Destruction" is not accurate here. It's not exactly heavy.
My list:
1. Europe "Final Countdown"
2. Village People "The best of'
3. The Jackson 5 "Christmas"
4. Milli Vanilli "Girl you know it's true"
5. Boney M. "Take the heat off me"
6. Emerson, Lake and Palmer "Love Beach".
7. Bananarama "Please yourself".
And so on. I'm too tired now to keep writing...
Believe it or not, Final Countdown (album not song) has some good heavy tunes, though more on Melodic Metal/Glam side of things
In its place I’d propose you put in some Nickelback, who are the greatest atmospheric blackened death doom sludge post drone metal band of all time...........
.......yea no
@@ironhide8491 I'll consider it, thank you. Now I'm into the heavy side of Spice Girls.

I love fuel and re-fuel as well??? His memory remains him not that well
Fuel and re-fuel lol ok good ear I almost missed that.

My Top 10 hard rock/heavy metal albums in no particular order:
Paranoid, Black Sabbath
Screaming for Vengeance, Judas Priest
Piece of Mind, Iron Maiden
Back in Black, AC/DC
Van Halen, Van Halen
Physical Graffiti, Led Zeppelin
Animal Magnetism, Scorpions
Shout at the Devil, Motley Crue
Appetite for Destruction, Guns n' Roses
and my favorite album that no one's ever heard...
'''Sunrise on the Sufferbus, Masters of Reality!
Thanks for sharing the observations. I like the Metallica Black Album as well.
Did not expect Creatures! well done.
some of my fav heavy albums
megadeth - peace sells all though the final kill remaster of the first album competes
metallica - ride the lightning or no life til leather
Danzig 1, 4 or 666
Dri - thrashzone
judas priest - british steel
thin lizzy - thunder and lightning or renegade
gwar - scumdogs , toilet earth or must be destroyed
motley crue -shout at the devil
nin - downward spiral
pantera - cowboys from hell
1. Number of the Beast
2. Killers
3. Maiden debut
4. Brave new World
5. Piece of mind.
is my bias showing?
Ritchie Blackmore, Roger Glover, Jon Lord, etc have all admitted that the Black Night riff was borrowed heavily from Ricky Nelson's Summertime.
Piece of Mind was my first Maiden album that I bought. Totally agree it's the best
1) Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell (To me the perfect bridge between the 70s and 80s Metal by the most influential band of the genera),
2) Black Sabbath - Vol. 4 (To me this is the peak of their 70s catalog, and unlike their first three albums, this is one I keep playing and haven't tired of. Songwriting is killer, and the doomy sound is perfected. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is a very close second, but not as HEAVY in my mind);
3) Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard of Ozz (This band were also a phenomenal force and influenced the direction of metal in the 1980s alongside the NWOBHM bands. Most of all Randy Rhoads paved the way for stronger classical influences and professional musicianship in metal);
4) Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (I could have picked any of Iron Maiden's albums between 1982-88, but this is my favorite, probably because it's their most progressive effort, while still maintaining their trademark full throttle bass and drums, criminally catchy choruses and dual guitar solos),
5) Dio - Dream Evil (The greatest voice in Heavy Metal were never as good solo as he were in Rainbow and his first stint with Sabbath. Nevertheless, Dream Evil is in my opinion his best album, and nothing is more 80s metal to me than Dio);
6) Judas Priest - Stained Class (It's my favorite Judas Priest album. Maybe not full blooded metal, but I think they were at their best during the late 70s. Their songwriting was stellar, Halford's voice supreme, and the "dry" clean sound is to die for),
7) Dream Theater - Awake (When heavy metal as we knew it faded from the headlines in the 90s, Dream Theater were on of the few bands with strong 80s metal influences to gain success with their uncool high pitched vocals and over the top guitar shredding. Awake is their magnum opus in my opinion, striking the perfect balance between 1980s melodic metal and progressive rock as we knew it from the most virtuous bands of the 70s, ELP, Yes and Rush especially),
8) W.A.S.P. - The Crimson Idol (Blackie Lawless did shock rock like only Americans could do it. Glamourous, yet horrifying like a John Carpenter movie. When the autobiographical Crimson Idol was released heavy metal was in decline and the grunge era sadly on the rise. That might be the reason why WASP and this album never achieved iconic status, but to me it is on of the best metal albums, and concept albums, ever made);
9) Budgie - Never Turn Your Back on a Friend (Almost unknown outside of nerdy metal circles, Budgie was one of the earliest metal bands, playing fast paced proto-metal somewhere in the landscape between Sabbath and Purple.
I was waiting for MAIDEN!!!🤘
Appetite for Destruction is in my opinion, not a heavy metal album.
GnR not heavy metal. Neither is acdc, deep purple and motorhead....
@@dietersmit6639 Deep Purple and Motorhead are absolutely metal. Agree on G&R and AC/DC. Hard rock.
It's pop with guitars.
@@dietersmit6639 motorhead is heavy metal idoit
@albatrossus albatrossus I wouldn't go that far. It would classified as hard rock, imho.

Here is mine (from a younger POV of the genre), some aren’t even from the 20th century:
1. Judas Priest - Painkiller
2. Black Sabbath - Paranoid
3. Iron Maiden - Powerslave
4. Judas Priest - Defenders of the Faith
5. Motörhead - Inferno
6. Judas Priest - Firepower
7. Iron Maiden - Brave New World
8. Saxon - Lionheart
9. Heaven & Hell - The Devil You Know
10. Savatage - Hall of the Mountain King
Since imo Metal lists should go up to eleven... 😁
10. Shout at the Devil - Motley Crue
9.Creatures of the Night - KISS
8. Peace Sells But Who's Buying - Megadeth
7. Diary of a Madman - Ozzy
6. Heaven and Hell - Black Sabbath
5. British Steel - Judas Priest
4. Black Album - Metallica (agree 100%...it's commercial but it's my favorite Metallica album)
3. Powerslave - Iron Maiden
2. Paranoid - Black Sabbath

6 Iron Maiden: "Killers"

Savatage - Hall of the Mountain King is my favourite.
Back to back killer tracks. Highly underrated album.
I've been searching for a key to Iron Maiden. Thanks.
great job....our list are highly correlated...subscribed
Here's my top 10
1. Judas Priest - Sin After Sin
2. Iron Maiden - Powerslave
3. Blue Oyster Cult - Fire Of Unknown Origin
4. Scorpions - Intrance
5. Black Sabbath - Sabotage
6. Budgie - Night Flight
7. The Michael Shenker Group - Assault Attack
8. Torme - Back To Babylon
9. Alcatrazz - Disturbing The Peace
10. Motorhead - Ace Of Spades
The first 7 Black Sabbath albums are the best! The greatest Heavy Metal Band ever! IMO
I'd completely forgotten that Ace was on the cover of Creatures of the Night. Saw them on that tour with Vinnie and always thought of him (is it her now?) as the principal six-stringer on that record. And my word, I've just read that Robben Ford plays on it.
Robben Ford played on kiss Creatures LP. Really ?..
In no certain order...
Slayer - South of Heaven
DBC - Universe
Voivod - Dimension Hatross
Megadeth - Rust in Peace
Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss
Death Angel - Act III
Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime
Watchtower - Control & Resistance
Seiges Even - Steps
Danzig - Danzig
Interesting list, not typical, which is good. I personally think 'Diary of a Madman' is underrated and is better produced, with more variety and better songs. Bob Daisley was the man.
Bob Daisly was definitely the man. The man who wrote all Ozzy's great lyrics.
