Hajduks of Raška - Epic Slavic Music of Serbia
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 27 сен 2024
- Music composed by Farya Faraji. Next up in the series about the Hajduks (freedom fighters of the Balkans against Ottoman rule) is this one with a Serbian musical theme. The instrumentation harkens to the historical instrumentation that was present during the period of the Hajduks; drums, different Saz-type instruments like the Šargija, and the typical Kaval flute of the Balkans, as well as the gajda bagpipe, mostly associated with Bulgaria but also utilised by Serbs. The time signature is in 7/16, an extremely rare occurrence in world music outside of the Balkans, which is known for its asymmetrical rythmic structures. The melody imitates the typical folk songs of Serbia, such as Žali, Zare, da žalimo and others, and the instrumentation is heavily based on that of bands like Kulin Ban, who use an older, 16th to 18th century Serbian instrumentation compared to the more recent addition of accordions, clarinets, saxophones etc.
Raška is a historical and geographical region of modern-day Serbia which was conquered by the Ottomans around 1455, and liberated gradually starting from 1833. In the middle-ages, it was one of the central regions of the Serbian principality, with the important city of Ras which gave the broader region its name, and Rascia of was often used as the Latin exonym to mean Serbia in Latin sources during the Middle-Ages, pointing to the significance of the region.
The figure at the center of the image is Veljko Petrović, more commonly known as Hajduk Veljko, one of the most prominent leaders of the Serbian revolution against Ottoman rule. The lyrics are from an operatic-style piece by Stevan St. Mokranjac (9 January 1856 - 28 September 1914), a Serbian composer, and the passage these lyrics are from is called the Sixth Garland, Šesta Rukovet, and recounts the historical event in which Hajduk Veljko, during the Battle of Negotin, proclaimed "I'll give my head, but I'll not give Krajina!" (Krajina meaning the frontier, or the border). The battle ended with a victory and massive Ottoman losses, but Veljko was struck by a cannonball and died almost immediately.
Lyrics in Serbian:
Јер ти иде силна војска,
Силна војска, до три паше.
Одговара Ајдук-Вељко:
И ја имам силну војску,
Силну војску: три нахије.
Главу дајем, Крај'ну не дајем!
Xај, хај, хај, хај!
Jer ti ide silna vojska,
Silna vojska, do tri paše.
Odgovara Ajduk-Veljko.
I ja imam silnu vojsku,
Silnu vojsku: tri nahije.
Glavu dajem, Kraj'nu ne dajem!
Haj, haj, haj, haj!
English translation:
Because a mighty army is coming to you,
A strong army, up to three pashas."
Ajduk-Veljko answers:
"And I have a mighty army,
A strong army: three nahiyas.
I'll give my head, I'll not give Krajina!"
Hey, hey, hey, hey!

God bless you and your works! You are a very gifted and blessed man!
hajduk is a Hungarian term for a saboteur soldier, hajduks were from Slovakia, hungary to Croatia, Romania, hajduks arose in the 16th century in Austria-Hungary, hajduks and uskoks, and they appeared in Serbia only in the 19th century, serbians have no connection with hajduks from the 16th century ,ruclips.net/video/VRHPTYn7qY0/видео.html
it is interesting that at the same time the Ukrainian Cossacks appeared, the rulers of the wild steppes,
Minor complaints, not in the lyrics but in the performance, you read it "i ja imam silna vojska" instead of "i ja imam silnu vojsku" which would be typical of a different dialect than the one that the main work is written in.
Also, "i ja imam" would better be translated as "I also have" or "I too have" rather than "and I have"
And so Veljko Petrović indeed kept his oath.
@@sal6695 Yeah I noticed that it was written “u” but the original piece I took the lyrics from sing it with the “a” ending, you can hear it in the original recording at 1:30: ruclips.net/video/S3NYLBOjymI/видео.html&feature=shares
It did confuse me but I figured the composer must have had his reasons so I stuck with that since I don’t know much about the language

Slava to my Serbian brothers and sisters from a Bulgarian! We might have some quarrels and bad history, but the world needs more love, not hate, God bless!
Sadly, people forget the good history we had too cause of some damn quarrels. We may fight and an occasion, but at the end of the day, we're brothers 😁
We are not brothers with Bulgar-Tatars....never where never will.
@Зверь !!! I would argue with you, but the sheer fact you do not understand genetics shows me its worthless.
@@knyazvals4824 What is there to argue. The Shops are one only "Slavs" in Bulgaria, anything east from them are not even Slavic. You can tell by their physiognomy, traditions, traditional clothes and dances etc.Nothing to do with Slavs. Some may say "oh they mixed so much that now they are Slavs",in that sense Romanians would be even more Slavic then Bulgarians.Ottoman dogs, two times German bootlickers and Serb-killers will never be our "brothers"
@@TheDukeOfKnin All of that is just so wrong. Our cultures are similar i dont know how you cant see that like even the Hajduks on the very video, their clothes are super similar AND the music like seriously? Do you even KNOW ancient "Tatar" culture? I think not. We ain't some nomadic hunters who live in tents. Also yes Romania can be considered Slavic ethnicaly they just refuse to see it just like you refuse to be friendly to Bulgarians because of some history.
Also seriously, Ottoman-dogs.... Like we choose it... the rest is fair I suppose I will not say we are some perfect "friends" so I won't argue that.
But your country did bad things to mine too but I still consider you at the very least friends :/ Plus there was Slavs before there was Bulgars so really makes no absolute sense to call us still "Tatars" when we have nothing in common. I know we backstabbed you and I am sorry but are you saying Serbia would not? Because you have simple as and still continue to insult us and think of us as not Slavic but loveee Russia which btw by your logic is actually Nordic and not Slavic. :/ But forget it, to you I am some stupid "Tatar" so don't even bother replying I know I havent changed your mind even one bit.

My head - I will give you. My country - I will not give you. What an epic words!
Or maybe "I give my head" means "I swear on my head", like "Let my head be cut off if I ever break this promise"
@@Kosh998 It depends on the context really. In Serbian language, you can use "I give my head" in three ways: As a guarantee of a promise, as a guarantee of truth or as a denial. The first one is used as means to back up a promise that you make, for example "I will do that, I give my head". It may not make much sense in English but in Serbian it actually makes sense. In this context you are backing up your promise with ultimate guarantee - your life.
The second use is a guarantee that what you are saying is true and you are backing up your words with your head "That happened, I give my head that it did." You are swearing on your life that what you speak is true.
The final usage, as was used in this song is a denial. What he meant is a denial of a situation which is to give up his country and the context is "I would rather give my head (life) than give up my country." This way you are directly denying a certain, possible status of some thing which can be applied to any situation, item or person.
Којекуде...
What a masterpiece.

Hajduk Veljko Petrovic was one of the finest commanders during the First Serbian Uprising 1804-1813 against the Ottoman Empire.
