ML has had an interesting history. Mainly because it began one of the biggest niches we have right now: the super SUV. 1997 saw the first ML introduced in that Dinosaur movie, the lost world, as a bit of advertising for the new w163 “M Class” as it was originally known, the new luxury successor to the G Wagon.
A huge sales success, shortly after Mercedes allowed #AMG to get their hands on it and in 1999 they made the ML55 AMG, about 20 years ago! This had new independent front and rear suspension, a revised ESP, and more crucially a 5.5 litre V8, it was a modified V8 from the S Class with performance camshafts and other tweaks linked to a 5-speed auto, and it produced 347BHP, 0-60 in 6.7 seconds. 🤯
It was one of the first cars ever in the Performance SUV market. Well before things like the Range Rover Sport, a whole 10 years before the X5M and predating the Cayenne too: it was one of the pioneers of this huge market we have today. A true trendsetter, and the daddy of them all really.
The next version came in the w164, this time with our favourite #MercedesAMG engine ever: the M156 6.2 V8 from my C Black series, the SLS #supercar etc and so was born the ML63 AMG!! And what a beast it still looks, looking similar to the mad C63 w204 with its blocky front end and fog lights. We had adaptive dampening in the air suspension now, a better 7-speed box, and the engine gave us 510BHP and a damn fast sprint of 5.0 to 60! It sounded amazing, drove better than the last car… but by this time had stiff competition dynamically from Porsche. Though, in terms of emotion and design, what a thing.
Next came the W166, and the next rename to… GLE63. Now we have the loud one, the 5.5 litre V8 M157 bi-turbo. In its most thuggish form in the Mercedes SUV models, it was one of the first times you could order a performance exhaust. This brought a moderate power increase in gen 1, but gen 2 saw 585BHP, 768NM of torque and 4.2 0-60. So faster than the M4 of its time. And it wasn’t just the engine, it had adaptive anti-roll bars and ‘Active Curve’ from the S Class, and a 40-60 biased 4matic system.
The game has moved on very quickly after this car came out. Enter car’s like AMG’s own GLC63S, the fastest on the ring in class currently, Stelvio QV just behind it too, then the Urus. The first Super SUV. Signalling a tier above our old T Rex.
The RSQ8, based on said car, until recently the fastest on the ring… till recently thrashed by the new Cayenne Turbo GT. Yes, Sports SUVs smash ring records now, and are seconds away from track cars of old.
So our new GLE63S, has its work cut out. And it also has to differentiate itself from the very similar-looking GLE 53… Luckily, it comes from good stock. First the engine, the familiar 4.0 V8 found in everything from C63 to GT R: here it’s used in its first-ever hybrid treatment paired to an EQ Boost stater alternator as we’ve seen in the 53 AMGs. So while our combustion engine alone gives us a whopping 612BHP… the EQ gives us 22 BHP on top. And while the base torque is 850nm, it can call upon 250 additional when needed! Oh, and a 0-60 of 3.8 seconds. But we tested it quicker in the wet. Yeah.

This kind of engine emotion, CANNOT be replicated by an electric car. These are the things I will miss about them.
And cars like the S65 or cl 600 or SL73.... it's too bad
People were saying the exact same thing when turbocharged engines replaces the NA engines.
Also the same when DCT replaces manual transmissions.

I'm not sure I agree with that, tell you why.
If you have a smart phone with haptic feedback, it's all but impossible to tell that it's not a motor moving your finger in the traditional sense. With the advances in tech I'm sure they'll be able to replicate a 'real' car feel quite soon.
I’m not an suv guy. I like my bum to be nice and low but I have to admit that this is a beast . Probably the best choice for someone looking for a performance suv
3.6 seconds to 60mph! This car can literally outrun modern Sports Cars. It would be cool to see this race a Mercedes A45s to see which is fastest!

AMG V8 is unique. I miss my 2014 ML63 AMG. My 2016 GLE 450 isn't bad but it's a V6 bi turbo.
That feeling of 500+ hp of an AMG V8 is awesome. Drive safely.

The GLE 63 S is my pick of choice of the AMG SUV Range (not the GLC or GLS 63). The GLE delivers it all, and even the Coupe is awesome.
This is by far the best looking SUV
There's actually a difference on the side between the 53 and 63S that you can't see on this model because of the running boards. The 63S has a silver side trim piece along the bottom (gloss black if you get the night package). This side trim piece is always body colored on all the other GLE models. Not anything major but another small way to spot a 63S.

Great review. I have the same one and while very nice and more refined and spacious, I can’t help but miss the character and sound of the M157 I had in my ‘17 GLE63s.
I like your video, very informative and you let the car talk some of the time. Too many reviewers seem to think we want to hear them, not the car! This AMG63s is just a crazy ride! As fast as my c6z06 Corvette! I drove one a few days ago and was hooked. I placed an order for a brand new one yesterday. Can't wait!!

I just traded in my 2021 AMG 63 G Wagon for 2023 AMG GLE 63 S and am happy i did. I've driven G wagons foir a while and wanted something a little more - or a lot more - agile, faster, and more comfortable. This vehicle addressed all of this without question. Very happy I made the switch, and I still love the G's.

It does. Gle580 is quicker than the 53 but more for offroad purposes cause you can get e active body control suspension
The M class did not come out a decade before the original X5.
The M class was first on sale in the UK in 97/8 , and the X5 in 98.
The first performance X5, the 4.6 iS came out in 2001.

This one has a far better element of duality than the competition. This is also quite good offroad. An aspect not covered in this test.

As far as I can notice, but it seems like you measured 0-60 down the hill. Still, it's an incredible result for a car of this size. On a straight track I presume it will be 3.84, as stated.

Am a big fan of rock/metal and underground rap/ Horrorcore rap and beautiful looking car. In these luxury cars I won’t go the high performance modes, Because am here for the look of the cars and the sound system

Today i went for a test dive on the GLE 53 and i was disappointed in the cheap quality interior and not enough power as i have the E 63S. Is the GLE 63 same interior quality materials?
My father has a 2000-2005 facelift w163 ML 400 amg with a deisel V8 with 250 hp and 560 torque and its sounds fantastic when you start it up and also its super quick.But you will be a little disapointed from the sound of the exhaust becase it sound menecing from the engine (front) and not so much from behind(even in very high RPM) and the same goes (a little) to the interior.Overall great car.

Well the look of the new generation GLE is growing on me yet I still think the previous generation looked simply awesome. I don't think that the panamera gril ruined the look, rather it was the lights. If it had the new grill with the old lights I think it would be fire.

I have the GLE53. I do love that it has the same styling except for a few minor details but it def does not accelerate or sound like this. It actually is very muted. I had a 2018 C43 and that sounded sooo much better and was more aggressive. The GL353 has lag
@@skrem23 I had to get used to it. I went from a C43 to this and I liked the 43 better for reasons we can’t control
1) The 43 gives you a more turbo KICK when you push the throttle
2) The 43 sounds great even for a V6. All new cars are muted nowadays for regulations
3) The 53 uses its electric motor in a way where I think they tried to reduce the dependency for the turbos so most of the time you don’t get the same sudden kick the C43 gave you
I have had to start driving in manual mode now when I want to drive aggressive because the automatic engine isn’t as responsive as the C43 was
Also on the C43 every time you down shifted it popped and banged. This does it a lot less
If you can afford the 63 I would get that.

I have a 2022 GLE63 S measured 3.71 with dragy which measures road surface flatness. I’m confident it can pull a 3.6 .. pretty close as it is.
Depress break pedal until you see HOLD on the dash, floor gas pedal while watching the boost gauge. When it gets almost full release the brake. Also, Race mode, suspension in comfort and hold sport handling/traction control button until it shows off on the display. If it’s not fully off any wheel spin can activate traction control which pulls timing and reduces throttle input. Even if slightly it will affect your time. 👍
Oh and Raz test car could be slightly faster if it had the Carbon Ceramic Brakes as they are 30% lighter. I got the CC brakes and 3D Burmester Sound System.

I would choose it over the normal cayenne turbo and rsq8
