Do you make yarn cakes? And if so, why do you do it? 🥰 I know there’s a few reasons people wind up their yarn, so I’d love to know yours! 🙃 Alsoooo btw I put this on my Amazon storefront because I like it so far and so it’s easier for you to find just in case you’re looking for one too and it’s currently ON SALE and cheaper than when I bought it 🥲 just wanted to let y’all know in case you were thinking of getting one! It’s under “recommended materials” in my bio and then “crochet favorites” or here’s the direct link www.amazon.com/shop/influencer-5d85fa54/list/20D4QHPH1ZS7R?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_aipsflist_aipsfinfluencer-5d85fa54_VDWJQNSMDWHQCD731V05_1 disclaimer: this is an affiliate link which means I may earn a small commission if you use it to make a purchase but at no extra cost to you 🥰

i wind my skeins into cakes mostly for the GLORIOUS center pull, but also because they’re neater and more compact for storage
i also mentioned in another comment that when i get low on a certain skein i put it into a plastic bag so it doesn’t get everywhere. and then when im working with it i just open the bag partially and pull the tail end through so it stays neat even while im working

I usually don’t wind my yarn into cakes. I usually just keep my projects in their own bag, and leave the tangle of yarn at the bottom and unravel as needed.
But when I do cake, it’s because of many reasons. Mainly, I cake if I’m joining yarns myself. I like to mix and match different types of yarn for my projects, and caking them together as one yarn 🧶 is easier than trying to wrangle two (or more!!) bouncy baby floof balls. Also, I will cake yarn if it’s either a really difficult texture (hello, chenille) or if I buy a skein that doesn’t offer a center pull (why do companies even offer it like this 😭). Oh, or if it’s sock yarn. :3
My cotton yarn for my cable knit sweater is caked. My acrylic yarn for my first attempt at a raglan sweater is not. My merino yarn came in a nice, center pull skein so they’re fine. My chenille yarn from the dollar store is not center pull, so on the winder you go.
I’ve never seen an electric winder!! My boyfriend bought me a nice wooden one recently, much better quality than the plastic ones (I’ve already broke one hehe), but I love the battery operated one. Especially since it doesn’t have a cord to get your yarn wrapped in!

Try and keep a little more tension on the yarn, it gives you tighter yarn cakes that are less likely to turn into blobs. And you don't have to wait for them to turn into blobs! You can take it directly from a ball to a cake (its actually easier to do it this way because you don't have to worry about untangling it)

Just a PSA, depending on the type of yarn you use, you may not want to wind it in order to store it. Winding takes a lot of elasticity and “bounce” out of some fibers when stored that way for a long time. It is usually recommended to only wind when you are about to use it. I don’t think it is a big deal for all fibers but something to keep in mind when working with expensive and/or natural fibers

I didn’t know there were electric ones. I have a manual one you spin with a lever on the side. It works well, but it’s heavy and is inconvenient for large amounts of yarn. I usually wind by hand, but I like having the option of a winder.

I like a hand cranked yarn winder as I can crank at the speed I'm untangling the yarn.

Suggestion, put the yarn band in the middle as you remove the cake from the winder.

I do that as well especially if the yarn has a dye lot #.

@@ladyroseanne it’s good for stopping the inner windings from coming undone and tangling the loops! This winder leaves a big enough hole in the centre for a toilet roll tube, folded, naturally! It was worth the £63 I paid! I do find the tension wheel to be a bit ‘floppy’ and it sometimes just flips to the side, But it’s still a crackin’ piece of kit!

The one thing I don’t like about this winder is the tension is so loose the cakes kinda collapse on themselves

Option 3: Toilet paper tube, or get a nostepinne!
I wound yarn cakes by hand for years with a nostepinne, and it works great!
