you probably dont give a damn but does any of you know of a trick to get back into an Instagram account? I stupidly forgot my account password. I would appreciate any tricks you can offer me
I had this a few weeks ago. Wasn’t brave enough to pull all the clutch apart so just chucked a load of wet chain oil under the cover. Seemed to fix it but I suspect only short term. Now I’ve seen this going to give it a full clean. Nice one!
great one Jim...(and Tod for the camera work )..and without sounding patronising, clear and simple instruction. and a great tip how to set up the clutch...thank you
Great video Jim and just in the nick of to time too, this happened to me just last night! I’d been cranking it up a steep hill in first gear and when I came to descend the gears weren’t working. Stopped, looked at the chain n it was all floppy. So I grabbed the mech with both hands and just pulled it back into place. As I did this, it just snapped back to normal position. Carried on riding n it was fine! Didn’t think about the clutch at all! I just sprayed a load of gt85 on it this morning thinking it was just the cage getting a bit sticky. Ill definitely take that cover off tonight and give it a clean out inside. Cheers! C’yas in 3 👍
Cheers lad. Might have just saved me a few quid here. I was going to get a new SLX 11 speed mech, but I have an XTR and XT with this exact issue, so fingers crossed two spares in the toolbox, less landfill and effectively £100 better off :)
@@PinnedTV i just had another one go and had to run it old school in the open setting for a ride. Still managed to get a 3rd over all on a well known Lake District track. If you are not tied into a wheel/rim sponcer then you need to get on the Zipp moto 3 rims. They are superb for enduro. I have recently replaced a set of SC Reserve wheels for them and my strava times have fallen on the technical tracks (13 seconds over 3:30 track).
Sorry Mate, but I don't think you made it work actually. A properly working clutch would only rotate one way with the friction from the steel ring. Then bounces back freely (clutch should not rotate in the ring). In ~7:20 your clutch is rotating both ways, meaning you have the same friction both ways... I believe something is wrong here in the clutch itself or between it and the axle.
Thanks mate 👍 yep bang on ...I take bike up the out back on fishing trips gets a hard time have to carry it across a few rivers etc. Just did what you said works great now Cheers 👍👍
Hi Jim, nice video, didn't see your video before I dissambled the whole clutch. Now I'm having trouble getting the chain stabilizer back on the axle. It seems to get stuck very easily. Just a few mm on the axle and it's hell to pull it off. Got a clue to what's wrong.
Inside the stabilizer there are 8 needle bearings that need to be lubricated, if they are rusty and if there are traces of rust on the axle, it need to be cleaned so that the axle is completely smooth. When you cleaned and lubricated stabilizer, it should go on axle very easy and should rotate only one way, if not than you probably need new stabilizer
@@tomaslovrek6670 thanks for the input.. I also discovered that the seat for the cam unit is broken, probably matters or what do you think? The bike is only 6 months old. The clutch box hasn't been opened before. Warranty?
@@mikaelgoransson6839 I bought it 2 months ago (XT RD-M8100 12 speed), did 550km with it when he got stuck, I opened it yesterday and found a lot of water inside, bearings of stabilizer was so rusty that i barely took it from axle. 2:48 do you intentionally abuse it? I sure did not, I cleaned it, greased it, but fo course I still wore it out eventually, so I had to swap for new, cus the clutch spring had a groove in there. so if doing a service does not work, that's the reason.
2:03 I have had bad experience with that rubber cover, it fell off, I bought a replacement, but it fell off in few weeks too, the rubber hole gets so loose it just falls off. So the solution was to put grease in there pack so much grease nothing came inside.
This is an in accurate “fix” the clutch is only supposed to move one way so the actual issue is the clutch bearing itself is seized on the shaft and either needs to be replaced or it sometimes can be removed from the shaft, cleaned and re oiled, all this video does is show you how to by pass your clutch.
That's correct. the video is inaccurate. The cylinder is the clutch bearing mechanism. In this video the metal band is being used as a substitute for the clutch. The real problem is that water ingress causes rust within clutch bearing, preventing it from operating correctly. Clutch bearings cannot usually be rescued. The remedy is to replace it. Water and other crud can enter the clutch enclosure if the plug which covers the adjustment screw is knocked off when riding - it is in an extremely vulnerable position. Water can also enter if the rubber seal is badly fitted. This clutch is a terrible idea which has been very poorly executed. Shimano need to either improve or drop this mechanism. I have had problems with these on two bikes.
Honestly why are people still using shimano in 2020? Just buy sram. Works so much better and actually lasts. Shimano falls to bits. If you keep buying it shimano won’t fix it and You’l still be buying the same tat in another ten years.
@@Error-hc7mp ok fine well enjoy your shitty brakes that leak all over your pistons and your random bite point and enjoy having the clutch fail after three months and all the pivots being loose and wobbly out of the box and don’t forget get enjoy your cheap plastic thumb shifters you can’t quite reach properly.
@@Error-hc7mp yeah I’ve run zee brakes with no problems ether. I think it’s more of an issue with the two piston brakes and the pad rattle because Shimano aren’t smart enough to make a wedge shape pad they use square pads with an expansion gap for heat so as the pads rattle over rough ground it’s ragging the pistons forwards and backwards causing them to leak. I’m using slx and xt brakes on some of my bikes. You have to keep them topped up to prevent the random bite point issue and even when they’re not playing up they’re not particularly good. They don’t have any power and they over heat ridiculously fast. I don’t know how much you ride but I get about 12 months out of an XT mech before it’s ready for the bin, my xt cassette is 12 months old and it’s ready for the bin as is my slx and both my xt and slx shifters have cheap plastic thumb shifters. Meanwhile all my Sram stuff works way better, needs less maintenance and lasts for years. My x01 cassette just hit four years and still shifts better than my xt ever did. Guide RSC’s just hit four years too and I’ve only had to bleed them twice. I’m done with shimano. I don’t care how cheap you can get it online. It’s a complete waste of money. You’re way better of paying the extra for sram and getting something that actually works and lasts.
3:18 why do you do it the complicated way? just lift the clutch off and this part follows off, then you can properly clean it, then you can open up the spring. you are making things more difficult than they actually are. 4:09 this part should come off easily. also it's not necessary to spray it, sometimes it might help, but for cleaning most of it you can just wipe it off. and save the spraying for the really nasty stuff that remains if that's needed.
