    I just bought a 2500 last week. I was looking at a 3500 but it sold before a made up my mind. The 3500 has a much stiffer ride than the 2500. I hooked it to a 8000 lbs trailer and it really pulled it well. I can’t see needing a 3500 unless you are going to pull excessive weight,0ver 20,0000 lbs.

      Please respond to this: I have a 2500 Laramie with a Cummings. I’m starting to get lost on what I can tow, especially with the confusing tongue weight. I’m looking at a 8600lb travel trailer. The tongue weight is listed at 1020lbs. Will my truck tow it? I know I need weight distribution bars, but I cannot get an answer from anyone who is pulling 8K+ pounds in a 2500.

    I had a 2019 Ram megacab diesel with air ride. Keep in mind, the air ride has limitation sensors. They didnt kick in until i loaded bricks at ablut 3300 to 3500 pounds. Not saying you should, but the system is designed with a limit. It just isnt gvwr, its axle weight rating.

    The payload on Ram 2500’s is such a joke. Those trucks are for bumper pull trailers with small equipment like a mini excavator or skid steer, or even ATV/side by sides. I would however assume that they are the most comfortable 3/4 ton on the market due to the coil springs.
    Another thing to keep in mind is that an apples to apples comparison is only about a $400 (can $) difference in price. I had a 37’ bumper pull camper trailer with ~1050lbs hitch weight. I went to my dealership and built a 2022 Ram 2500 Big Horn crew cab short box 4x4 with the 6.4 Hemi. Once it was all completed I asked them to build the IDENTICAL truck in a 3500. Exact same options and it came in just over $400 (can $) more than the 2500. It was a no brainer for me and now I have 4000lbs of payload because my GVWR is 11,000# instead of capped off at 10,000# GVWR. The 2500 would have been ok for my trailer, but for a small price increase, why not.
    Payload is always overlooked and I’m so glad it being talked about more and more. Thanks for the video JB! Sending much love from Ontario 🇨🇦

    One of the things I hate about by 2019 2500 Big Horn; payload is 2,330 and towing capacity is 19,330; we pulled 30ft travel trailer from FL to Montana 2yrs ago and we were almost at payload max with family, hitch weight, and items in our truck bed; luckily for me, we are going to sell our camper and only be pulling horse and cow trailers.

    In terms of safety, not exceeding the axle ratings are more of an important issue than exceeding the listed GVWR. I have a strong feeling that the GVWR ratings have a lot more to do with local regulations than do the actual axle ratings. In part, due to the near 2k lb difference between the gcawr and gvwr on the 2500 series. That same difference is much less on the 1 ton. While I'm not trying to make a case for driving over the legal gvwr, but safety is paramount, with ratings taking a 2nd place - due to reasons such as this. Most of our local commercial transport safety crews (at the scales) seem to work off the axle weights and gvcwr...

  • @SurelyYewJest

    When did Ram increase the GVWR option to 12,300? That sounds like it happened recently. Cuz ya, that Ram 3500 long bed SRW HO Cummins + Aisin (looks like a Laramie?) and 31 gallon tank, it had a payload several hundred higher than I thought it would, especially considering the additional transmission and bed weight.
    I'll have to re-weigh my truck because I swear, with just me in it and full fuel and DEF, it weighs less than the difference between my rated payload and the 11,500 GVWR.

    Picking up my “new to me” 2022 Ram 3500 Crew Tradesman including HO/Asin with 12k miles Friday. 3940 payload on the sticker.
    Over kill for my current 6k travel trailer but after 6 years towing with my Tacoma, overkill will be perfectly acceptable! And who knows if there’s another trailer or perhaps truck camper in the future!
    Don’t care it’s not optioned up, got it for less than 50K and I wasn’t about to sink $70-$90K into a truck. That’s just nuts.
    Thank you for all the vids, they’ve been helpful over the past year deciding.
    PS: The way I look at it, my diesel will “offset” my wife’s Jag EV! 😂

  • @mkresser
    @mkresser 3 месяца назад +2

    There is another way to skin this cat if you’re willing to give up the Cummins… I have a 2500 Laramie crew, short bed with a Hemi and 410 axle and I have just over 3000 pounds of payload so I can legally approach the maximum trailer capacity. Not saying 18,000 pounds of trailer with a normally aspirated gas engine would be fun, but it would at least be legal!

  • @lonesonestarcattlecompanyj408
    @lonesonestarcattlecompanyj408 6 месяцев назад +4

    several things to consider. You cannot drive a truck plus trailer over 26,000 pounds unless you have a CDL license. The towing weight of a trailer is dependent upon the payload. In a gooseneck you want 20% of your weight in the bed and 80% in the trailer. Thus you may have something that says you can tow a lot but reality the payload will set you back or the weight of the truck will set you back unless you have a CDL license, thus a three-quarter ton generally is pretty perfect because it’s 10,000 pounds which means you can tow 16,000 trailer and tongue which means 3200 pounds can be on the bed itself

  • @DylanTheDriver
    @DylanTheDriver 8 месяцев назад +6

    Great video! The most important thing is to not be over your GVWR! As a truck driver I see people all the time with too small of a truck for what they’re towing, and that is not only terrible for your truck but extremely dangerous. For a tractor trailer the typical GVWR is 80,000 lbs without a permit. The legal numbers per axle are 12,000 lbs for the steer axle, and 34,000 lbs for both the drives and the trailer tandems. However, in my Cascadia I have a 13,300 lbs steer axle, and it’s almost impossible with full tanks of fuel to not be at 12,500 lbs on the steers. Luckily, as long as I’m not over the 80,000 lbs mark I’m legal, but that extra 500 lbs takes away from the weight I could have on my drives. The drives are rated at 40,000 lbs, but to go that high you need an expensive permit on top of a CDL.
    For the 2500 the GAWR is 6,000 lbs for the steers and 6,000 lbs for the drives, so in theory you could go to 12,000 lbs, but that is above the GVWR, which makes it illegal.
    I hope this explanation further helps explain the theory behind the rated weights.

    My F250 had plenty of towing capacity but the pin weight capacity wasn't high enough so I traded for an F350 dually and have plenty of payload and extra weight carrying capacity so I could add an auxiliary tank and be more picky where I filled up. We recently ran into a 50mph side wind while pulling our 5th wheel and was amazed at how the dually handled it. I think a 250 or SRW350 compare to each other better than aF350 Dually does to a SRW 350. I also found out in my research that an F350 Dually has more pin weight capacity than a F450 because the 19.5" tires on a F450 are heavier. The dealer I bought mine from tried to argue that point and lost. Although I admit common sense would dictate the F450 would actually be safer with a heavy load.

    2500 for TT camper hands down. My 3500 rode like a brick wagon. Most uncomfortable truck I ever owned. Keep the 3500 for commercial and construction. Family trips will be in my 2500 bro wagon. 😂

      If your not a commercial vehicle he can't give you a over weight ticket and it wouldhave to be a DOT officer anyway for a weight violation. Then he would have to have portable scales with him.or take you to a set of state certified scales and thats just for commercial vehicles. Reason I know this I have a Ram 3500 and a 32ft long tandem axle dual wheeled trailer I use to haul my farm equipment on Its a family farm nothing for profit only have small garden space rest is mostly hills need the equipment mostly to keep property cleaned up

    Ram keeps 2500’s as a class 2 truck (10k gvwr). Only difference between a 2500 and a 3500 is the rear suspension. Basically the number doesn’t mean shit it’s just 10k minus weight of the truck is your sticker payload. lol at all you who think a 2500 with a hemi magically can carry more in the bed than a Cummins 😂. Don’t be scared load it up it’s gonna be fine.

    Only one thing. Sales people don’t know squat about towing, capabilities, nor much else. Period. They are likely to tell someone their half ton can pull a 3 axle toy hauler. All they care about is making a sale.

    Added comment: If one tows most all of the time, the 2500’s RFE68 transmission clutches may start slipping a bit, from wear, as soon as 70 to 80,000 miles. If one tows all the time, the 3500/Aisin transmission will hold up.

      @@noneya61 I don’t know why you’re laughing unless it’s because you realized that you were wrong. This is straight from Ford if you still think we’re wrong.
      What is the curb weight of my Ford?
      Curb weight is the weight of the vehicle including a full tank of fuel and all standard equipment. It does not include the weight of any passengers, cargo, or optional equipment. Curb weight is considered the closest weight to the actual weight of the vehicle. The curb weight may be helpful to know when planning to ship the vehicle on a carrier or to tow the vehicle behind another vehicle.
      The actual weight of a vehicle can be precisely determined by weighing the vehicle on a large scale. Scales for cars and trucks are often found at truck stops or where cargo is loaded onto trucks.
      A way to determine curb weight is to calculate it. Curb weight can be calculated by taking the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) and subtracting the vehicle payload or passenger/cargo capacity from GVWR. The GVWR is printed on the vehicle’s compliance label (door jamb label). Payload or passenger/cargo weight capacity may be printed on the tire specification label located in a door jamb area. A 5280 pound GVWR with an 1150 payload or passenger/cargo capacity would be calculated: 5280 - 1150 = curb weight of 4130 lbs.

    Your math checks out. But reality demonstrates that numbers are simply just that….numbers. I see fat families towing large campers all the time. People will pull up to the gas station and 300 lb husband and 400 lb wife both step out of their 2500s to get their 64oz soft drinks. And I believe the towing rating takes into consideration the payload affect of the gooseneck and front end trailer weight.

    The payload is so low on ram 2500s that there is really no reason to have a gooseneck hitch. Pretty much any trailer with a load will overload it. I like the max tow option on the GM trucks.
