in case anyone was curious about some of the terms in the second to last story:
Galifreyan: a written language from Doctor Who, very complex and circular
Sindarin: one of the elven languages that Tolkien created for lord of the rings
Haida: an indigenous tribe from British Columbia known for their art style, which often depicts local animals (such as orcas)
…so yeah, I can’t even imagine how strange that looked all in one tattoo.

Also, I'm fully with you re: the last story - I paid a lot of money to look like this, I know my tattoos are bright and colorful. As long as someone doesn't insult them, I'm always happy to talk about my tattoos and be polite/take a compliment. Like you mentioned re: the difference between a scar and a tattoo, I made the active choice to look like this, and therefore, I expect people will ask questions, and that's ok.

    • @anacsadder

Grocery store worker is NTA. They just asked a genuine question, and got a super rude response. People are seriously lacking communication/social skills or something these days smh. I've had some really nice conversations with completely random workers at retail stores, even on days when I wasn't feeling very sociable, and it usually leaves me feeling just a little bit better after having a nice interaction with a stranger.

  • @jchic1999
    @jchic1999 5 месяцев назад +8

If someone asked me "what do your tattoos mean?" that would be overwhelming for me. They're asking a stranger to stop and explain multiple stories while they're just finishing up their shopping. You don't just stop a person and say "hey tell me about 10 meaningful times in your life." To me, it's the same thing.
I've had people compliment my tattoos or ask if a certain one had a meaning, and I didn't mind those interactions, but the way this last AITA went, I know OP didn't mean any harm, but they definitely went about it the wrong way in my opinion

Hey, I saw the last story in the wild! A lot of the comments that I agreed with pointed out that sometimes tattoos represent traumatic events or losses, and people aren't going to want to talk about that with a random cashier. It's not a question I'd ask a stranger.
14:42 I'm hung up on the part where she's 17 and her "first real relationship in over a year" means she was 16 if not 15 when she was in a relationship with a guy that was mentally, emotionally, and sexually abusing her. It's sad when anyone goes through that, but I find myself feeling particularly bad for her going through that so young.

As a person who works in retail and have visible tattoos I get both sides. But there's really big difference in how you ask/compliment. I like to show off my tattoos because I am really proud of them so if anyone asks I am happy to explain. But since a lot of them are more to the anime side, I like when people ask in a way "Oh, is that pikachu?" because then I feel the conversation can be better if you find you have something in common with each other and it feels much better than "Hey, cool tattoos"

For the last one, I tend to get spaced out/disoriented if I've been out & about or running a bunch of errands so if someone tries to talk to me in a store I may not hear them or have the energy to form a response that makes sense. I can kind of understand not wanting to be asked about something where you really have to think about the answer and explaining it without going on too long, especially if there's a line behind you at the checkout.

With the last reddit I do understand both sides. I understand that the retail worker was just trying to be nice but tattoos can be very personal sometimes even connected to trauma which might not be something you want to open up to a stranger about. Also the fact that the question insinuates that tattoos should have a meaning. I just don't think it's strangers "right" to have an explanation why you got the tattoos that you did. Again, I get that the retail worker was just trying to have a conversation but starting it with a compliment that is more open to them talking about the meaning IF they want to is a better approach.

I think the grocery store worker just asked the wrong question to the customer. I often try to connect with patients in different ways to put people at ease in a doctors office. If they are wearing a sports team shirt or a music artist shirt, I’ll talk to them about that. And there are dozen of other examples. If somebody has an interesting tattoo, I’ll ask if they got the tattoo from a local artist and if so who. It’s then super easy to continue talking about tattoos if they are happy to discuss or just end it on that. I agree with the people that said it was just too personal of a question off the jump with a “what do they mean?”

I feel that adhd comment 😂 except for me it’s more with physical things, if I can’t see it it doesn’t exist in my mind! I’m good with appointments, time and such. But with how my brain can be and probably also because of anxiety, I’m so diligent about having my calendars and journal up to date with those things, both on my phone and in two journals; one small one for my handbag for quick reference and notes incase something happens to my phone and the other is a normal journal that is left at home.
Like of course I remember most things that I have but there have been many occasions where I’ve gotten up to get something I wanted to use/ eat and have sat it down on the counter/ table while grabbing/ preparing something else and then walking off without the first thing because I had my back to them or they were out of my line of sight thus wiping their existence from my mind, until I sit down, get all comfy only to then realise what just happened and having to get up again to grab said things 😅 I legit last week forgot a piece of leftover steak I had just got out of the fridge on the counter for like 10 minutes because I sat it down while making a bowl of salad and a drink to have with it and walked off eating the salad and sitting down, not remembering about the steak until realising that something was missing 😅🫣 Thank goodness it’s winter here now, live in a cold town, and don’t have a pest problem to worry about! But golly adhd brain really hits hard when it does. Like I can remember so many things, mostly useless or random, but then other things it’s a complete mind blank/ wipe until something makes them pop back!

The guy getting so many in a short time sounds like he's having some kind of compulsive behavior issue. She doesn't have an issue with him getting the tattoos, she has a concern with how he's acting, and that seems really reasonable. He even calls it an addiction.

The grocery store cashier isn't an asshole but asking people what their tattoos mean is super personal and weird, better small talk options are "I like your tatts" or "where did you get them done"

  • @hayunnie
    @hayunnie 3 месяца назад

That's such a weird store policy. I would hate for a cashier to randomly try and strike up an arbitrary conversation with me, especially if they started asking about something personal.
Then again, I would hate it even if, looking at the produce I bought, they asked me what I planned on cooking for dinner. It just feels intrusive and I'm not into it.
I love the self-scanning system at my local shop, I don't have to interact with anyone.

re: the first one, my mother's still a little mad at me for being the only person in the family to veto their idea for a family-wide group tattoo. they all collectively decided on anchor tattoos and got them before I was even old enough to get tattoos (I'm the baby of the family) but after I already had a well-defined theme in my head for the tattoos I wanted and an anchor does NOT fit into that plan anywhere. we've been at a stalemate of "if any of us can think of a design that fits in with the rest of the tattoos and does not elicit a single "ugh typical white girl anchor tattoo" I'll go for it." (I'm also the only one in the family who anyone would reasonably go "ugh how stereotypical" to about having gotten an anchor tattoo)

I've had my cat for five years, since she was five weeks old. I got a tattoo for her before I met my fiance. He has always known that I love her deeply, and that i would never get a tattoo for him even if I do have tattoos for my fur babies.

The dude getting tattooed too 'fast'; dude is 17, I'm going to presume the tattoo artist is around the same age. My concern is the vigilance with aftercare, whether the tattoos were done in a clean environment, if the artist was trained or had appropriate supervision, etc.

I also glad I only got a few tattoo when I was 18 than didn't for over 10 years now I got one for my son and getting a cover up and taking my time getting my first sleeve done by an artist I found and love all there work of.

Ngl I often compliment people I meet it goes from “oh my gosh I love that shirt!” To “ your hair looks amazing” or “ hey just wanna say you look so cool!” If it’s someone in they’re 60-80 I just say “ wow really you don’t look a day over 40-50”
I just get people men and women smiling and thanking me sometimes even tell me where they got something clothes from

Gallifreyan is a language from dr who, it's designed using circles and dots and crescents layered on top of each other. A stranger who is not familiar with what it is would look at it and not even know it's supposed to be a language, they'd think it's just a fun circle design... the fact it's a name of somebody who said not to tattoo it is really wild! But it's not gonna come across as a word to ANYONE except really really hardcore Dr who fans

I don't like being asked about my tattoos cus they're all personal, but I do get that not everyone gets personal pieces, so I do feel okay if someone instead said "I like them" versus "what do they mean."
as for all of these AITA, I think majority of them are a very progressive approach cus I also agree that people should do whatever they want with tattoos. My partner has felt the same way with getting pieces done without him knowing, but our compromise is that when it gets closer to the date, I say I have an appointment, and show them what it is. I also don't allow myself to be influence by their opinion on it cus I'd still be getting it for myself at the end of the day.
thank you for making these videos as always~

I have a few tattoos but only one visible one so make of this what you will. If I see a tattoo I like and want to chat with the person, I try to avoid asking about a possible meaning as the opening question. Usually something along the lines of "I like your tattoo, where did you get it?" "this looks awesome, any plans for more?" or if it's colorful and vibrant I add on "how old is it? It looks so clear it could be fresh!". That way it gives them the option to give lots of detail or minimal details. Of course I try to vary things depending on the situation and what the tattoo is. People usually love chatting when I start with questions like that. They tend to tell me the meaning on their own if they feel like talking about it but if not I totally understand and will move on to other topics. I don't think there were any a*holes in that last post. I'm guessing the poster was trying their best to find something that could easily make a conversation enjoyable for the customer and the customer may have just been having an off day. It didn't seem like there was ill intent from either side

With that last one specifically....like I sometimes have people come through the drive thru and they have gorgeous tattoos. I am not slow to point this out. But I keep it at surface level "Omg I love the colors of your tattoo. It's amazing." and leave it at that.
But I'm also a woman and when I'm being honest if a dude compliments me "Oh you're so sweet thanks." but if a girl compliments me, I'm kind of floating on air for a few hours. I can understand her apprehension. I do. He probably is being honest in that he wasn't flirting with her but she may have negative experiences in that regard.

I'm totally in the agreement of waiting to collect tattoos from various artists. I definitely wish I had went to more artists when I first started getting tattooed. My best friend (who did most of my early tattoos) often would make me feel like shit for going to someone else. Anddd despite what he thinks, he can't do every style lol. (Always always always go to portrait specific artists!)

when I was in college (10yrs ago) my (now) husband walked into a tattoo shop late at night and impulsively got tattoos with his drunk friends and I was furious. Not because I was anti-tattoo (I have them), or because I needed "permission" as a girlfriend, but because it was an impulse decision and we were a new couple and I thought it was a sign of high-risk behavior. They didn't have ideas, they didn't vet the place, and they didn't choose the art or artist. I was making a judgement of my partner simply because I didn't want to be with someone risky and impulsive. Obviously by the end of it, we stayed together, but maybe that's where that AITA boyfriend was coming from?

for the last post, i feel like it mostly depends on the way they asked the question, the intention/tone of the question matters. if it was asked in judgemental/belittling tone i would completely understand the tattooed persons reaction. although, i kind of doubt the worker asked it in this manner considering they said they were asking out of genuine curiosity and they were also working, so they have to be nice to the customers. if the tattooed person didn't want to talk about the meaning of the tattoos they could of just communicated that and said that they're are to personal to talk about or that they don't have any meaning at all and just like the art work etc. i can understand the point of not owing anyone an explanation or that maybe she had an off day, but i don't think this should be a full excuse to be rude to someone. there are better/nicer ways to diffuse a conversation you don't want to have. i personally think people were to harsh in calling the worker the asshole. i don't think the tattooed person is fully the asshole either, but it was a bit rude to respond to them like that.

For the last post, I understand both sides of the coin. My family has worked in customer service, retail ,and in the food industry, I haven't due to help concerns. But in that world, you be nice to customers and that's how you get tips or good feedback on surveys. I know I'm more willing to be like if someone treat me well and then there like "Can you fill out the survey?" I'm going to do it. Now as someone with tattoos and scars. I can understand not wanting to hear that question, especially relating to my scars. Most of my scars I've obtain due to my health, medical procedures, and traumas. So, I never appreciate anyone asking me about my scars. But I appreciate someone asking me about my tattoos. Because I use them kind of compensate for all my scars. Now if I had a memorial tattoo or an extreme personal tattoo I know some tattoo designs are used to represent other traumatic memories as they used tattoos to help them through that, they might not appreciate a question about that specific tattoo to a stranger

Talking about how the love from the cat is unconditional and he got upset because she doesn't love him this way is pretty weird to me because in my opinion love between adults never is unconditional
I'm not talking like super weird conditions but like setting boundaries and expecting some affirmation and encouragement to make a compromise are very reasonable conditions for a relationship
You can't expect that from a pet so yeah that's very different and very reasonable to feel/ think differently about it
