This progressed so quickly i have no doubt it was from the artists condition. Most common is from unclean surfaces and water *cough tap water*
The fact it was resistant to the fiest round of antibiotics she was given deffinetly makes it seem like she had developed cellulitis. Cellulitis is like an iceberg, however bad it looks uptop its usually much bigger underneath the skin.
A lot of people were saying its staph - but just to clarify saph is one of the main bugs that CAUSE cellulitis.
I hope this guy gets exposed, if these dudes have nothing to lose they will keep doing what they're doing.
Also you're right Lauren the markings is to track the redness if its growing or shrinking lol

I got cellulitis from an injection by a nurse in my hip, it was one of the most painful experiences I’ve ever had and I’ve had quite a few. I had to get IV antibiotics. I’ve had my large intestine, rectum, cervix, uteris, right ovary, fallopian tubes, appendix and hall bladder all removed, have had two ostomies (second is permanent), infection from a drain tube, internal bleeding, etc and cellulitis was worst than quite a bit of that. It was just a small area too!! I couldn’t move positions without intense pain. I even missed some of my sons baseball games which I never do.

From having infections before personally. From very professional surgeons- I’m talking some of America’s top surgeons.
I can easily say that whatever precautions they said they took… they didn’t. There’s no fcking way. That rapid level of infection I saw… from a viral infection that had to be killed with antibiotics that doctors are AFRAID of giving patients if they don’t have to. Like they genuinely would avoid giving if it was even remotely possible bc they could make it ten times worse and destroy your immune system. The fact that she had a fever and was throwing up makes me feel like she was already in early stages of sepsis. In 2018 I got cellulitis and sepsis from a cut on my hand. Within 12 hours of the injury my entire hand was swollen and extremely painful. After 24 hours I was nauseous, had a fever, etc. I started taking bactrim 12hrs after injury but it wasn’t working well enough. After 48 hours I went to the ER and was in full blown sepsis, hospitalized for two weeks then on oral antibiotics for two months after. I almost died. The oral antibiotics probably slowed the infection just enough for her to get to the hospital.

Why should he be in jail? She decided to get ot done, she called out 25 things before he started that said it was a badidea. She made a choice and these are the consequences of those choices. I'm sorry , people need to be responsible, people have intellectual minds, and cell phones , so the red flags and the fact she didn't even reseach the facts is a serious issue.
I'm am absolutely in terror for her. The problem is that it's not just his fault, it is hers as well.

@@beentheredonethat5908 I would love to hear this point of view explained to a lawyer lmao. yes, its still your fault if you give someone an infection. no it doesn't matter if they "should have known better." there's a _reason_ tattoo artists in most places are required to have a blood borne pathogens certification. I don't care if she signed a waiver, the duty of care was on _him._ he should know how to keep his setup sterile, how to recognize the symptoms of serious infection, and how to _put aside his personal pride and tell that person to get to the doctor before they fucking die,_ holy shit. he gave her incorrect medical advice that almost cost her her life
the victim blaming here is off the charts. you seem to think that people who aren't as perfect and clever and "intellectual" as you deserve to get hurt, and that if you are simply clever and worldly and intellectual enough, you _won't_ get hurt. but that's not how the world works. there aren't always red flags, there aren't always warning signs, and nobody, _nobody_ is perfect in making their decisions. just have some human fucking compassion, jfc. yes, it is the guy with the dirty needles' fault that she got sick

I've had sepsis and it's terrifying how FAST it comes on and how bad it gets so quickly. I felt ill the day before, though it was flu coming on. I was out with my mother in the afternoon when I started to feel really badly sick and needed to go home. Got home, crawled into bed shivering like mad. At about 5 pm the ambulance was called. The paramedic said had I just gone to sleep I wouldn't have woken up again. I was taken straight to a lovely room labelled "resuscitation" and spent the night in the ICU with a lot of tubes and needles in me. I mean less than 24 hours I went from fine to literally dying, that's terrifying. It got so bad so fast and the scariest bit is they never found the source of the infection either. Sepsis is so frightening, it'll kill you within mere hours.

This story isn't about a tattoo, but people need to be more like my cake lady that's making my wedding cake for July. 15 years ago (not a typo.. FIFTEEN YEARS) my best friend got married. They hired a lady to make their wedding cake and she FORGOT the cake entirely. My best friend's dad ran to the nearest grocery store and grabbed a standard cake. The cake lady told my best friend afterwards: "When you need a cake, it's on me!" And this lady has since blown up! Her business is booming and she only takes 20 orders a year, she travels for big events to supply specialty cakes, she doesn't take orders less than $2k... My best friend called her and said "my best friend is getting married. Can I take you up on your free cake offer?" And the cake lady said "absolutely!" and then burst into tears and told her that this has plagued her for the past 15 years, and she completely redesigned her business model after forgetting my best friend's wedding cake. She agreed to do my wedding cake for free! I didn’t want to take advantage of the situation and get a full cake, so I was thinking of doing a small cutting cake, for us and possibly our wedding party. At the tasting, she was absolutely insistent that she's doing a FULL cake for the entire wedding! I even asked her "are you sure??" And she was basically like "yes! You're not getting any less than that!" We all shed some tears at the tasting, and she even gave my best friend a few mason jars full of cake and continued to apologize profusely! That is the way to be! Do what you can to fix your wrong doings! Yes, I'm happy I'm getting a free cake, but I think I love the fact that this is providing closure more! ❤

I think the reason we're seeing more of this is because of TikTok's algorithm. It's really good at finding random people with interesting stories, and amplifying them to the right community. There's lots of dramas that used to be limited to niche forums, Reddit and (maybe) Twitter - that are suddenly going huge from TikTok and becoming very visible.
There's also a parallel trend of cheap imported tattoo equipment and lots of tutorials online - so people are also able to become self-taught "experts" without actually having the skills or knowledge to be safe/good.

I always take even small cuts seriously because my mom nearly had her leg amputated from a small scrape that got infected and started going septic. It's a lot more serious than people realize and can happen to anyone! It's so important to take care of any cuts/wounds on your body. This goes double for tattoos because you're literally putting foreign substances into your skin which increases the chances for infection via a number of different avenues. If you're ever questioning the cleanliness of a tattoo studio; RUN don't walk right out of there and find somewhere else.
It's terrible what this person has had to go through. She's lucky that it didn't end up worse :c

He would use pumice stone and things but then started clipping it away when he would clip his nails, once he cut it a bit too deep into that baby soft skin underneath. He didn’t think much about it, and went on a work trip. Came back sick as ever - turned out the cut on the foot and then using a hotel shower (the Dr believed) caused a staph infection/nearly septic to the point that they put in a central line and after 3/4 days in hospital sent him home with 2x a day IV antibiotics and a nurse came out every other day as well. Thankfully i’m a medical assistant and was able to help him with the IV and flush the line and wound cleaning etc! If he had been gone on the business trip one more day that callus may have killed him!

I think there are a couple factors at play. With algorithms marketing cheap tattoo machines to the public, we have lost some of the barriers that kept people from starting a tattoo career on a whim. In a world of “buy now” buttons, we are no longer weeding out the people who would have been discouraged by having to research a tattoo supply company, sign up for an account, choose a model, etc.
But I also agree that we are hearing more about these incidents because of an increase in social media use. I worked at a big box craft store from 2005-2017 and at least once a month I would get the question “where are your guys’d tattoo inks at?”
I would explain we don’t carry tattoo inks, and the customer would instead ask where we keep “the inks.” I would make a last ditch attempt warn that none of the inks are formulated for injection in skin, that they are not produced in sanitary conditions, and that use of any of our products in a tattoo could result in severe infections including sepsis. Hopefully I prevented some injuries and illnesses, but nearly 20 years later I still regret that I was not in a position to refuse to sell the inks based on my concern about what they might be used for.

I saw Markie’s video about this the other day, and when I first saw the photos my immediate thought was “that looks like cellulitis”, and the symptoms she described sounded like it too. Years ago, I contracted cellulitis from a spider bite on my leg, and my calf looked very similar to hers (minus the tattoo).
Edited to add that I just got to the part where you talk about the markings, and the doctor did that on my leg too. You’re right, it is to see whether the swelling and redness has spread or shrunk.
I was living in South Korea at the time, and I’d been hiking in the woods with friends when I got bitten. I didn’t think anything of it until I got home and felt dizzy and nauseous. I assumed it was from the heat, until I looked down and saw that the bite on my leg had spread. A few hours later, it had almost covered my entire calf. It was about 1 or 2am by this point and I didn’t know what to do so I called my mum in the UK (she’s a dermatology nurse). She’s always been the type of person to say “it’s probably nothing. See how you feel in the morning”. But in this case she said “that sounds like cellulitis. Get to a hospital now!”
There were no English speaking doctors available, but they gave me an injection (I assume it was some kind of antibiotic), drew around the swelling, then sent me home and told me to come back later that day.
The doctor told me it was cellulitis and that it was a good thing I called my mum, because it could have developed into sepsis if left untreated.

I got cellulitis and sepsis from a cut on my hand in 2018. I started oral antibiotics 12 hours after the injury but they weren’t working well. It took me a couple days before I went to the ER and I ended up being hospitalized for two weeks. A month later, some bacteria that was trapped in my ankle joint released and the whole thing started all over again. Sepsis, two week hospitalization and surgery to irrigate my ankle joint. I was so incredibly sick. There is truly nothing like it. I felt like I was in a dream.

Tattoo artist here - on the topic of Second Skin and reactions -
The adhesives in second skin and similar products can have a type of chemical reaction to the types of soaps used in some artists set up, for example I use green soap and if you do not clean the tattoo with rubbing alcohol (yes, I know that sounds awful but I promise the chemical reaction feels worse) before putting on any second skin or similar products, it can create a more severe red reaction around the tattoo (like the one on the right side of the second skin reaction photos - the olive branch I believe?) - BUT NEVER SWOLLEN LIKE THAT.
If it were the chemical reaction, it would be visible everywhere the soap was, and it wouldn’t swell like a golf ball in one spot. I’ve had this chemical reaction, the tattoo artist got distracted half way through cleaning the tattoo and it was almost divided in the middle where one side was cleaned before and the other wasn’t.
Just throwing that out there though in case anyone does get their own second skin, saniderm, recoveryderm or whatever else - be sure to wash well before you apply the bandage to remove any soap residue from the tattoo session, even in the areas surrounding where the adhesive will be! And ALWAYS DO A PATCH TEST! ❤️✨ away from your tattoo to make sure you aren’t allergic to those kinds of tattoo bandages!
And keep in mind if your tattoo artist says they don’t use it, you can ask why, or simply get your own, but there’s probably a reason!
P.S. it will rip your skin off and make it look like a peely sunburn for a few days if you use it on the wrong kind of soap! 😢

As someone who got a lot of blackout on a leg piece there were two things OTHER than "just" the sanitation that stood out too. I'm just sharing this in case anyone is wanting to do it.
They did this in one sitting, that's a lot of trauma to the body at one time. Literal trauma, the body has to clear out that ink and heal that area. My large lower leg blackout took 12+ hours, we did 3 sessions. After the third sessions it did hurt to walk on my calf for 2 days (sore not pain).
It wasn't bad pain but it was sore like i had a workout because that area had a LARGE TRAUMA. And i had a couple very small areas like on my femur where the ink didn't stay as well. These are normal. And this was discussed and of course any areas that needed to be touched up after would be touched up, not being offered as an "extra"!
And, this was not my first heavier black tattoo, even though i had never had anything like this. This is opinion: I don't think that this amount of blackout/black work should be given to someone who has so little tattoo work that the sanitation didn't throw up a flag. This is a painful experience that you need to be in tune with your body to get through. But GOOD ON THIS WOMAN to go ahead and call urgent care anyway because she knew that she was sick. Some people would not until it was much later and that can be very dangerous.
Also yeah with the bruising i bruise really easily and i have bruising usually where they hold my arm/leg/etc while tattooing somewhere else. I am sorry VERY pale so both myself and a couple friends are very pale so we get redness around the tattoo but even though the tattoo is red it's a more "evenly red" and not that big red patch. THOUGH if you see any redness please let your tattoo artist know and if you are not sure at all then don't be afraid to let your doctor know

@@Drummerchef13 I think people forget that on their own tattoos are wounds; even in ideal conditions your body can reject the ink or not heal correctly (I had to get a coverup because of this myself). It can hurt for a while if you get it on the muscle . You can pickup an infection for weeks from the public spaces around you (same freaking tattoo I got staph on a vacation). So if you have bad technique, bad product, and bad hygiene + who knows what else you've got just the process itself against you PLUS all of this extra crap.
It's not that they deserve it by any means but I think that we've made tattoos so common that the danger is downplayed

Make sure to move about a bit, as getting the circulation up is good for systemic health to filter the lymph and blood channels! (I never healed so fast as when bicycling everywhere year-round in the early 1980’s; having given up cars out of frustration and putting that money into…more tattoos…completely my bodysuit in 1986.)
By the way, my artist, D.L. Nolan, 1938-2019, termed my cats as “mechanical contrivances.” Nolan loved his award winning antique cars and modern motorcycles, but also applauded my bicycle use, putting a wee bike on a finger.

It is SO EASY to get a tattoo infection. I went to a lovely, reputable shop for the first time, but not my first tattoo. Excellent prep and sanitation. I used second skin for the first time and must've gotten a lil germ in there because I had an infection. The studio offered excellent advice and I went on antibiotics as soon as the red started spreading. The touch up healed perfectly. Be careful ya'll!

  • @aldergreen
    @aldergreen 4 месяца назад +24

People used to die from sepsis. The tings got better just after antibiotics were discovered.
To reinforce the "second skin sensitivity" issued by tattoer: the glue may give allergy and subsequent contact dermatitis, but those come in the shape of the object you glued on.
I get a band aid shaped red area if I use the wrong kind of band aid. This do not spread and heals in a short amount of time, in a similar fashion of a pimple: gets less red, may have a dry dry skin period, itches like hell, leave a darker mark for some time and at the end completely disappear.
Nothing of what happened to the girl could ever seem like a contact dermatitis from second skin.

The “semi-occlusive bandage,” which came to tattooing in the 1990’s from medical wound dressing of second and third degree burns…are unnecessary. Whether you use adhesive-bordered sterile bandages or simply plastic wrap, more people are allergic to the TAPE or the ADHESIVE than to anything else.
Tattoos are not burns, they are very shallow abrasions done with sharp, sterile “bug pin” needles. Our bodies have no trouble with multi-hour sessions of extremely shallow abrasions. Our minds get tired of the process of feeling (manageable!) pain for hours. That’s what gives some of us the tattoo “shakes” after completing three, four, five or more hours of (intermittently!) “continuous” work. The actual number of minutes per hour of needle-in-skin is minuscule; you can time it! Your body is completely fine with the abrasion; it’s not a burn, a break, a deep puncture or a laceration!! It’s our minds which have trouble putting up with the discomfort and remaining still on a table or in a chair.
Just take your time, don’t push the sessions so much that doing so “works against you,” and LEARN to RELAX!!
      It’s just a(nother) tattoo.
Don’t sweat the small stuff. Tattoos aren’t broken relationships, the death of dear pets, lost employment, major physical trauma, or mandatory. Pace yourself! Set some goals! Go on about your life!
Tattoos are the very least of the painful points in any human life!! Some people don’t even live long enough through childhood cancer to reach adulthood and get a tattoo! Keep that perspective!!
      I am Willie Snyder.
      I know.

I survived sepsis after a tattoo, and still love tattoos 😊
Mine looked quite similar unfortunately whilst infected and I was diagnosed with cellulitis plus tested positive for staph aureus. I was in hospital for a week after being rushed to ER (with intense fatigue, nausea, fever, full body aches and delirium that developed in 24-48 hours after the tattoo), but the tattoo actually healed up incredibly well in the end, which probably speaks to the skill of my tattoo artist. And yes, the doctors drew the dotted lines around my inflammation sites too 😂
I don’t know where it went wrong- there were a couple of potential contamination opportunities in the studio that I can recall, but my understanding is that staph can also be part of our skin micro biome that becomes dangerous if it enters the bloodstream. I’ve since tried to stick to artists and studios whose processes I have observed and trust; asking if they mind taking extra care with skin prep and cleaning at the end; and I also choose to use Chlorhexidine body wash or similar before going in to get a tattoo. I’ve been able to continue getting large and heavily coloured tattoos without any issues so far.
Just sharing my experience, and hoping this helps people find a way to balance their love for tattoos alongside making personal decisions for their own health and safety ❤ I’m also so grateful for the swift health care I was able to receive, which no doubt saved my life.

About second skin ,as someone who’s been tattooed for over ten years and has almost her full entire body covered , I wouldn’t recommend using second skin nor dermalize on the first day, it keeps the juices in keeping the skin overly moist which doesn’t help with pain nor healing, best to use a tattoo absorbing pad on the first night after a shower and air drying the tattoo and then either another pad the next day or dermalize depending on if there are still juices or not (there shouldn’t be much by now) or if it’s a very simple tattoo with not much colour you can just leave it be and then the day after that you can start applying stuff like tattoo ointments if you want but I don’t recommend cocoa butter because it causes painful pimples because it’s just too greasy and rich for silver skin/new skin

I met her at the studio and was immediately told I had to take my shoes off because of the snow outside and them doing Reno’s. The floor tiles were ripped up with jagged grout and bits of still stuck floor tiles…. I was barefoot in ballet flats. They were rude about me asking for paper towels. Told them it was not sage for me to walk barefoot around the place, and I’d dry my shoes to their satisfaction. They had not told my friend, so she was in her socks. They didn’t provide slippers or anything as a precaution. Then I watched as she was mid tattoo, getting her forearm done with it across the tufted pleather chair, no wrap down or anything. She was bleeding every so often…. The tufted parts of the chair thingy had reno dust build up caked into it… and her blood was mixing into it. I was horrified, and she was a nurse, and I was a hospital secretary. I couldn’t believe the health risks I could see that she was just cool with.
Needless to say, I never did end up risking getting a tattoo, because she was right, the place was a highly rated studio in our city, so if that was highly rated I was terrified to go anywhere and risk getting a tattoo.

I’m someone with very sensitive skin: I’m allergic to some brands of second-skin-type bandages, am prone to MARSI, and have even had mild allergic reactions to tattoo inks. So I feel pretty confident saying that while allergic reactions can be very serious and there is some crossover with the infection symptoms (dermatitis, itchiness, additional pain) there are a lot of differences and this person most definitely has an infection not a “reaction to the bandage”.

i think youre exactly right. before tiktok we didnt really have a platform for this kind of thing. we didnt have a platform for videos that wasnt youtube. vine was only 6 seconds, snapchat was only with friends, facebook posts could be public but rarely moved outside of friends, and instagram reels didnt come out until like 2020. we literally didnt have another place to make this short, personable videos. youtube maybe could have been used, but reach on a single video, from an unknown channel, wouldnt have gone too far.

The story of the shed tattoo studio reminded me of how my ex came home one day from work, saying that he will get a tattoo from his coworker, me knowimg more about tattoos than jim, asked him if he has pics of stuff that she has done, it was atrocious and i told him so and i also domt think she would have been sanitary enough but he was mad at me for telling him that her tattoos are bad and that I dont recommend him to let her do it. Like I get it, its cheap and easy to get but I dont think its worth it. He didnt end up getting the tattoo, at least not while we were together, dunno what hes been up to since xD

Yeah I don't mind private studios either. My current artist who's done about 9 hours on my arm operates out of a private studio and it's suuuuper clean. It was a renovated post office. He's moving to a bigger private studio and bringing in other artists and gutted the location to rebuild. It's prob the cleanest studio I've ever seen tbh.

I'm sorry, that price is insane!! I'm Canadian paying GTA prices (which I think are pretty similar to Vancouver) and I have two tattoos larger than that in a similar style that were $800 and $600... For that price I would have expected the absolute best quality, I'm so sorry she got THAT

It shocks me how badly tattoo artists can mess up.
I only have one tattoo, plan on getting more one day, and my artist made me feel so safe. He was careful, constantly cleaned my arm and once I had my second skin on, there wasn't a single puddle or blood drop to be seen, it truly was a perfect job.
And I have to add, it wasn't a small tattoo either, it's my entire forearm and has black coloured spots.
To see just how bad it could get makes me low-key nauseous.

I wouldn’t say that it’s a tattoo artist being careless, it’s a popular scratcher. It’s insane how many people go to people who just work in a shed/ have a friend do it in unsafe settings. Remember tattoos are permanent. Researching someone extensively helps your money in the long run even if it pricier.

like… touch ups are normally free for the first few months?? thats just normal protocol, not compensation. he should at LEAST pay for the medical costs incurred. it’s Canada, its not like they’re that extensive - meds, hospital transport, and time off would be basic respect imo. hell, my go-to artist comped my session (relatively short, but still $150-$200 including tip) because the shop manager called me a slur.

  • @jessd3012

I had a tattoo get infected once.
Now, it was definitely MY FAULT. The exposure happened after it was done, and came from my very elderly dog. I was feeling very ill after I got home, and my elderly dog climbed on me when I was too weak to fend him off. Definitely my fault.
But what got me was the artist's reaction to it...
I messaged him pictures of it being very obviously infected since he'd said to do so. It didn't look like this woman's tattoo, the scab of the tattoo was raised and you could see puss underneath. Like a giant ant bite or something. He was convinced it wasn't infected, and told me to leave it. I even told him I didn't think it was his fault, I thought it came from my dog who occasionally had staph on his skin. He still denied anything was wrong, and said to let it heal.
Yeah, I went to my doctor and had it cultured, it was staph.
I don't go to that artist anymore, needless to say. He's a great artist, his shop is clean, but if I were a person who doesn't have a regular GP and health insurance, it would have been very bad. That's what bugs me the most about the whole thing. I can admit that I did something really dumb, but for him to continue to tell me it was fine even after I had it cultured and knew it wasn't... that's dangerous. He straight up told me the culture was wrong because the tattoo didn't fall out...
I was on antibiotics for weeks. I was almost admitted to the hospital. Like... what???
I can't understand NOT saying, "Yeah, that looks a bit hinky. You have health insurance? Go see your GP or urgent care about that."
Why do you ask clients to let you know if anything seems wrong if you're just going to gaslight them? And I already had plenty of tattoos by this time, so it's not like this was my first rodeo and I'd be worried about any little old thing.
So, yeah. If you think something is wrong, go to a doctor. At worst, you're out $50-$100 for urgent care to say you're fine. I'd say it's worth it.

Every tattoo artist I've ever been to has put something along the lines of "if you have any health concerns following your tattoo, seek professional medical advice. Your tattoo artist is not a doctor" on their consent form/waiver. I can't imagine an artist being like "yep this is fine!" to this level of infection
