I found that after I prepared my apples by quartering them, I could freeze them for a day then put them in my press. This eliminated crushing the apples. Particularly useful tip if I am making gallons of juice for wine.
I’ve wanted to make my own juice for years but only had a press and not a scratter. Just juiced all our leftover apples by mushing them with a post as seen in your video. It tastes amazing, thanks for the idea.

Your video saved my day. Was having some issues with the included instructions for my press. Forgive my American measurements. I got about a gallon of juice from 20lbs chopped apple. Thank you!
I've just bought a press - just the 6L one, to press apples from my allotents. i was grateful for this useful talk through and demo as I wanted to see how to put the press together accurately and use it safely. The apple crushing bit with the fence post in the bucket was hugely useful as I didn't have a scratter (very expensive for how often you use it) so used two bits of 3 x 2 screwed together with a piece of broom handle screwed horizontally at the top and found smashing the chopped apples very theraputic and takes two or three minute as you said. i got two litres+ out of my first pressing. Thanks Huw, I'll be subscribing. Top video.
I remember back in the early 90s when they made it a law in Michigan that you had to pasteurize your apple cider and there was quite an uproar from the community.
Thank you very much for watching! Hmm I'm not sure but I don't think it would make it worse if you had a bit:) Thank you very much for watching and I'm glad you enjoy them!
That was a great video! Do you make enough to preserve juice? Or do you just make it fro fresh use? If you do make more than you need on hand for fresh use, how do you go about preserving/bottling the rest? Thanks for sharing!
Pasteurization, followed by bottling into sterilised bottles. Juice processed in this way is shelf stable at room temperature for about six months, more if you take extra care and store in a cool place e.g. cellar.
bharath Kachila You can grind it slowly. and then press it and take out the juices. That's fine. What should not be done is to use a blender or high speed centrifuge machine. because the blades oxidize the fruit with the air and kill the enzymes when they cut at high speed. with a masticating juicer of 80 RPM. yes. You can watch gerson therapy. To cure almost all diseases. This looks good this looks like apple cider or the treetop Honeycrisp apple juice I just bought. So what in the hell is that crap that is in the Motts bottle that looks like urine!? How filtered and pasteurized and processed is that compared to this?
Thanks John, this is the purest juice you can get however doesn't last long, but the taste is completely different to store brought juice, even organic!
This seems very harsh for people who have back and neck issues. Is there anyway to make it less straining to those who can't lift heavy things or bend over?
Depends on the varieties of apple used, it can be as much as 50% yield so 2 kg (4.4 lbs) could yield approximately 1 litre. An old fashioned orchard tree crop in a good year is about 250 kg, even a small garden tree can have as much as 70 kg of apples, so potentially 35 litres of juice could be realised from a backyard apple tree.
Uhm, well idk about in britain. But in the Us, all storebought apples are up to 15 months old and coated with tons of wax and stripped of essential nutrients so even making your own apple juice is not as good as real apple juice. but it is way better than drinking the nasty juices that all stores label as real juice, no matter what they say, it is all no good .. grow your own and make your own. I have made my own grape juice with a grape vine, it was so much different than all that junk at the store, even the stuff they call organic had no comparison. It was just that good. Don't trust stores people, lol.

Lots of different varieties makes for interesting colour. It is also thicker, lightly strained so it has more apple pommace in suspension, and it hasn't been treated yet. After it stands for a while the solids in suspension can drop down.
Nothing better than fresh unpasteurized fresh apple cider!
That is right! Thanks Luke :)

I love how you are showing us the old ways are the best ways.
Excellent video, Huw! Very clear instructions.
Woot
So you make non alcoholic cider? What is the difference between cider and juice?
Hello Ray:) In Britain apple Juice is non-alcoholic and cider is fermented apple juice which is the alcoholic, thanks for watching!
"That's cool and thank you for sharing this video with us," Chloe asked me to write this she is 7 years old and was curious about apple juice.
tysm for this me and my family grow apple trees and we no longer need to buy apple juice this helped so much.
Awesome. I can't wait until my fruit trees get going enough I will look to buy one of these juice presses forsure
Was just curious where you purchased that handle for your press?
I have a very old press like this and hoping to find a new handle.
Thanks

Excellent episode Huw! I am going to have to get a proper press for my brewing. I hand pressed grapes last night and it was a lot of effort!
Thank you very much Stephen! Yeah I recommend you get one 100% Haha I hope it was well for the effort:)
I'm sure it will be lol.
Awesome videos, that juice looks delicious! Thanks for sharing with us.

How do you pasteurize this?
Thank you so much for this video. What can I use for preservation for long time?
Pasteurization, followed by bottling into sterilised bottles. Juice processed in this way is shelf stable at room temperature for about six months, more if you take extra care and store in a cool place e.g. cellar.
Thanks huw❤
I used fresh picked and its made the best juice thus far..Hi from Tasmania! I am going to use a winch from my 4x4
Amazing process 💕
What is the make of the press, where do you buy it how much does it cost?
Don't bother taking the bugs and worms bits out, that's just extra protein in your juice :)
The worms and bugs can kill you.

Could you do the bashing in a food processor?
no. los blades oxidan con aire y matan las enzimas . con un masticating juiicer. si

It looks like great apple jiuce you have the Huw. Not like the clear over filtered stuff they sell in the shops.

You're welcome :)
Hi what litre is your press and what's the cloth used inside it? Will this probably come with a press if I buy one?
Cloth is muslin, often sold as cheesecloth. It is reusable if you clean it thoroughly.
Is that a pressure treated fence post??????
that is just what I was thinking I wouldn't put any wood treated with that stuff near my food
This seems very harsh for people who have back and neck issues. Is there anyway to make it less straining to those who can't lift heavy things or bend over?
You can use a juicer.
A good video.
But I would be a bit wary of using a fence post for bashing that is treated with preservatives.
This is an untreated post.

No juice tastes better than fresh squeeze apple juice. It's taste almost like if you were biting into a fresh apple!
That juice will taste like candy, although I don't think I could handle all that fructose.
Let’s be honest 😆 none of viewers here are using this for plain juice
