Probably Bob's most underrated song. Such a shame!
One of his best . Dreams Die Hard
Not to me one of my favorite freeway songs
Is "z mine and
His magnum opus.
So true.blending of his voice, instrument s fantastic
Singers may come and go, but story tellers are immortal. Bob Seger is one of the great American story tellers. There are very few Seger songs that don’t hit me right in my gut, reminding me of lost love, lost chances and youth that is now in the rear view mirror.
The Fire Inside
Great Song, and He's a great singer
Amen!
I hear that brother
Amen to that. Great comment.
One of my favorite Bob Seger songs, very underrated.
Yes!
Back in the 70s I got my first apartment it was a small apartment I had a record player playing bob Seger I thought I was on top of the world hanging out at the bars the greatest time of my life living during that time the seventies were the bomb
It's crazy good!!!
This should've been the lead single, not the boring "Real Love".
love the video. filming it in black and white was such a nice touch.
You will never understand the power and beauty of your youth...til it's gone
You are so right !
It isn't gone, but just tucked away for safe keeping. It always exists.
Very true words ....life and youth goes all too quickly
No one can still your flame when you're the fire
I'm 65 and when I hear this song I feel tge fire in my belly and a blood rush into my muscles and for awhile I'm 25 again and it gives me reason to keep fit and healthy!
A 30 year old masterpiece that speaks to the superficiality, loneliness and constant battle for meaning that defines our existence.
💯 I’m steaming all of Segar Christmas Eve 2020 and forever will
@@crystald8029 I know you enjoy every minute
Agreed in full
Deep🤔
You absolutely nailed it
My favourite Bob Seger song, There's nowhere you can hide.
you cant have a fav Bob Seger song
I just found this song at 46...what a masterpiece
I still think Seger is one of the most underrated songwriters of his generation. This song is moving. The lyrics paint a lonely picture of being single while managing dating and career in a city. Just wow.
@@teddieturner6222 And yet many people who have heard of Bruce Springsteen don't even know how to pronounce his name. He is not the household name he deserves to be!
If I could have but one man’s genius, I’d take Seger’s.
@@suprchickn7745 I'd take seger over The Boss anyday!!!
@@shakespeare_hall4788 They all admired each other. That's Roy Bittan on piano.
He is also in The Songwriter's Hall of Fame.
Bob wrote many, many great songs, and this might be the best of them...Jesus, those lyrics! Pure poetry, man...
Faking a smile, hiding the pain, never satisfyed...
I'm 33 and Seger was my first CD I ever owned as a kid. This is my favorite Seger song. My favorite line in any Seger song is "dreams die hard and we watch them erode, but we cannot be denied the fire inside." It hurts, haunts, and motivates all at the same time. I hope everyone out there is doing well, and if you aren't, pick yourself up and remember the fire inside.
Nice comment! I'm 68 and grew up listening to Bob's songs, still am enjoying his great ballads and rock 'n roll today! Hope
all is going well for you too!!
@@GothlindReiss I appreciate that! Life definitely has its ups and downs for all of us. Sometimes music is what gets us through the day! I'll listen to Seger until the day I leave this earth.
YES! SAME! I'm 32 and that line is seriously the most EMO line in any non-emo song I've ever heard and I'M HERE FOR IT 😍🤩
Great words yourself . Put it in song !
Interesting fact . The only person he let put a song together with himself was Glen Frey .
His most underrated song.
My absolute favourite
Bob Seger is simply amazing! One of the best Classic Rock singers of all time
Funny as all get out with closing comment at his concert....OK Boyd you can thank me later if you get lucky tonight....almost choked!
Played this at hubby's funeral. I said no but he wanted it. Miss you so much love you always 😘😘❤️
When I was 17 I was in a band in Saginaw MI where we had a chance to open for the Bob Seger System at the Saginaw Auditorium. I was just starting my junior year in high school. This was the late '60's and even then Bob was known as a hard rocker. Backstage he was one of the most cool nicest guys I ever met. I remember while we were on stage I looked over and there he was watching and tapping his foot. later backstage he came up and talked to us. I'm 67 years old and I still remember that show. Back then his best known song was "Heavy Music."
Jim Vandemoter WOW- what an AMAZING MEMORY!!!
Lucky fuck you experienced something that i would do just about anything for great memory for you
Something that you will never forget that will be passed on to your children and thier children, because BOB SEAGERS MUSIC WILL NEVER GO OUT OF STYLE! MUSIC THAT WILL BE DISCOVERED BY ENDLESS
GENERATIONS.
HE IS A ACTUAL LIVING LEDGEND
AND WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN,
Now that's a Fine Memory. Sad that you weren't able to get a picture together, but it wasn't like today where everyone has a camera via their phone. Still, memories and the stories that go with them are better than any photo that supposedly is worth a thousand words. 🎸
@@stevenself687 He is the most underrated musician, ever!
As you age you realize what it meant when your elders used to say “youth is wasted on the young “!
Thanks 🙏 for keeping me young in my heart ❤️ Bob
Thank you for being the soundtrack to my life. My husband and I raised our son and daughter on Bob Seger and Silver Bullet. The highlight for us was making our kids first concert experience to be Bob Seger and Silver Bullet while they was still in high school. I have been widowed for 8 years now but when I listen to your music memories flood my mind. It’s a wonderful feeling to be able to go back and remember younger years and happy times. ❤️
I'm a 3rd generation Seger fan.
Cindy Ousley I also had the pleasure of taking my daughter to her first concert and it could only be Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band. She was also raised on his music. We have great memories of cruising with Bob on many rides. Great music.
i did the same . im an old rocker and raised my kids on classic rock and seger was one for sure. life is short but fun and music is one element.
“The soundtrack of my life”, that pretty well sums it up for me as well. I feel so fortunate to have been born and raised in Michigan (still live here), grew up in the 70’s, graduated from high school in ‘81. Bob Seger’s music is part of who I am. I finally got to see him in concert. It was his second to last show at Pine Knob. 2 1/2 hours, every song was a hit and the crowd sang along with every single song. What an experience.
I have seen him 4 times in my life 1983 the last time was 2009
Never fails to bring a tear to my eyes, the truth in these lyrics is painfully raw for a whole host of the lonely single people among us. Thank you Bob for being the backdrop to my youth and now the companion in old age. Not many about now with his level of song writing and delivery.
Nice 2 meet another soul that clings 2 the good life!Kudos
@@joycehoward5193 I find so much to lift up the mood in this guys music, another of the great story tellers from an era of many. Hope life is being good to you and the fire still burns inside.......
Especially in the later part, where the girl moves to the window and has her own personal thoughts about it all. very pointy and moving
@@MagnusHaensler That image is indeed very poignant and brings the whole song into stark reality, strangely more so as I have gotten older than my younger days. Does it mean we are more caring or is it that we have experienced that bitter sweet feeling for our selves?
DAMN THE BESTEST SONG EVER!
Nothing is more American than Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band.....nothing......
Yes in your heart this song is American. But in my heart it's youth love freedom and carefree joy. From an Aussie to an American brother. Take care out there. We are thinking of you ❤️

God, forgot how killer this is. Great Song.
I really appreciate your love and support towards my aspirations, how long have you been my fan

The lyrics of this song are incredible.
Yep, but really kind of a Seger thing, right? The man can tell a story with music along for the ride.
I think they're the best lyrics he's ever written.
Seger 's music has so much power, pain, passion, and truth!!! When listening I have tears , goosebumps and feel so much emotion, no matter how many times I have heard the song. If in my car, I cannot get out until the song is finished. If I'm shopping, you will find me singing along and dancing in the aisles. Thank you, Bob for giving us so much beauty!

I agree 💯 goosebumps and emotion. He touches the soul for sure.
This was an epic Seger song, surprised it wasn't a hit. He was 46 and I guess his pop stature was eroding with younger people. Still a great song though.
Bob is one of the best artists of all times. This song never loses it's magic!
Bob Seger hits my heart with a cannonball....
Yes it does!! Thank you Bob! You touch souls.
This is one of Bob Seger's most underrated songs! I love how he was able to have a driving rock sound without an electric guitar, and using mostly acoustic instruments, save for an electric bass and a Hammond organ. According to the liner notes of Seger's Greatest Hits compilation, the musicians on this track include Roy Bittan on piano, Jai Winding on organ, Steve Lukather on acoustic guitar, Bob Glaub on bass, and Russ Kunkel on drums. The "driving rock" sound without an electric guitar, was created by other prominent parts. From Russ Kunkel's hypnotic drumming, to Roy Bittan's *very loud* piano part, from Jai Winding's screaming organ work, to Bob Glaub's powerful bassline, not to mention Seger's belting. Interesting fact about these musicians, is that they all began their careers playing with other artists. Roy Bittan is best known as the pianist for Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, Steve Lukather is best known as the guitarist for Toto, Russ Kunkel has always been a popular session drummer, Jai Winding began his career as the keyboardist for Jackson Browne's touring band, Bob Glaub was (briefly) a bassist for a band called "Journey". In addition, Bob Glaub's bass credits are insane: his most notable basslines include Jackson Browne ("Here Come Those Tears Again"), Stevie Nicks ("Edge Of Seventeen"), Mary Chapin Carpenter ("He Thinks He'll Keep Her") and The Calling ("Wherever You Will Go"). Quite a lineup on this song!
Great point. ...as All of Us Seger "Fan's" would agree. Yeah, Man. ...
Worthwhile comment thank you.
That part where he sings about the car pulling away, and you lock the door when he is gone for good..
You go to the window and you stare at the moon, riding high and lonesome through a starlit sky...
Those lyrics are epic!!!!
Then it comes to you how it all slips away...that last verse is awesome

I remember this song coming out when I was around 10 or 11 years old and it got frequent air time on the FM stations where I grew up. I rediscovered it a few years ago in my late thirties and the last verse verse hit me on a personal level as I had spent the better part of my adult life chasing a career I wasn't too excited about all for a false sense of security. Now that I'm entering my fourth decade this song has taken a special place in my heart. My fire inside got reduced to smoldering embers but I'm gonna turn things around...

"Dreams die hard and we watch them erode but we cannot be denied." That line makes me clench my fist in pride!
Very Springsteenesque , its wonderful.
E Street Roy Bittan on piano 🎹
This is my favorite song ever because of how the song flows and the non repeating lyrics (other then the chorus). The constant drum and piano are outstanding.
“Non repeating lyrics apart from the chorus” ... just like pretty every other popular song from the last sixty years then.
Roy Bittan on piano, Russ Kunkel on drums.
Love Bobs piano I could listen all day to him play that piano
Sounds a bit like Bruce Hornsby
@@shakespeare_hall4788 Bob is seen playing the piano part in the video, but it's Roy Bittan (also a member of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band) playing in the piano part in the audio. Pianist Roy Bittan and drummer Russ Kunkel are both really good musicians.

In a treasure trove of Seeger anthems, it's hard to pick a favorite, but this just might be the one.
Ship if fools is hard to beat but this is also a mastepiece!
This song is my favorite of all Seger's songs. You have to turn up the volume, get a little wine buzz and close your eye's. Such a talented singer.
A typical scene in most towns and cities at the weekend. Great song.
I'm 36 years old. I've spent most of my adult life (really since age 17) in big cities, including a couple years in New York. The older I get, the harder this song hits. Especially the last verse.
I had this video on my "FAVORITES" playlist for years, and it suddenly disappeared about 3 years ago, deleted by youtube/google. God knows how many views were deleted along with it. These comments only go back 2 years. Glad to track it down again. Gonna save it this time, somewhere safe!

Bob Seger, such a sweet, wholesome man. Nothing ever pretentious about him.
This song is a hidden gem if ever there was one. My old man fell in love with it in short order and played it for my mother once. "I don't like it; it's too depressing!" she said. To which he replied "That's the point!"

Bob Seger is a master at creating music that everyone with a heartbeat can feel and relate to...I have loved his music since the moment I listened to his live album, "Live Bullet" back in 1976...The icing on the cake is that his live shows are heaven on earth. Along with Bruce Springsteen, he is at the very top of the list of iconic storytellers in rock n roll history....
I had tickets to see him in Montreal in 1977. Got sick. A shame. He's amazing. Fabulous lyricist and that great voice. Pity you don't hear that anymore. Rick and Roll if it's not dead is on serious life support. Need a hot young band that plays it to bring it back to life. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

American balladeer ❤
here's a hard moon risin' on the streets tonight
There's a reckless feeling in your heart as you head out tonight
Through the concrete canyons to the midtown lights
Where the latest neon promises are burning bright
Past the open windows on the darker streets
Where unseen angry voices flash and children cry
Past the phony posers with their worn out lines
The tired new money dressed to the nines
The low life dealers with their bad designs
And the dilettantes with their open minds
You're out on the town, safe in the crowd
Ready to go for the ride
Searching the eyes, looking for clues
There's no way you can hide
The fire inside
Well you've been to the clubs and the discotheques
Where they deal one another from the bottom of a deck of promises
Where the cautious loners and emotional wrecks
Do an acting stretch as a way to hide the obvious
And the lights go down and they dance real close
And for one brief instant they pretend they're safe and warm
Then the beat gets louder and the mood is gone
The darkness scatters as the lights flash on
They hold one another just a little too long
And they move apart and then move on
On to the street, on to the next
Safe in the knowledge that they tried
Faking the smile, hiding the pain
Never satisfied
The fire inside
Fire inside
Now the hour is late and he thinks you're asleep
You listen to him dress and you listen to him leave like you knew he would
You hear his car pull away in the street
Then you move to the door and you lock it when he's gone for good
Then you walk to the window and stare at the moon
Riding high and lonesome through a starlit sky
And it comes to you how it all slips away
Youth and beauty are gone one day
No matter what you dream or feel or say
It ends in dust and disarray
Like wind on the plains, sand through the glass
Waves rolling in with the tide
Dreams die hard and we watch them erode
But we cannot be denied
The fire inside

I love this song. I walked those city streets--shown in the video--back in the early 90s. I lived on Staten Island and commuted to The City every day. My office was located on 34th Street between 8th and 9th Avenues. Many things in this video, sadly, are long gone: the W.T.C., the Cheyenne Diner, the old Staten Island Ferry boats that carried cars, just to name a few. Things change. But they were glorious times to be young and working in NYC. I'll never forget them.
