- Do you know what the single most important piece of safety equipment is? Of course every piece of gear that you wear is important but if you answered ‘helmet’ then you are 100 percent correct.
--
So how many of you have ever measured your head to ensure that you choose the correct size? And once you find the right sized lid, do you know how to slip your head into it and check for proper fit? Not all helmets are created equal. Sizes and shell shapes can vary greatly between manufacturers and it’s important for you to select the right one. In this video from the MC Garage, Road Test Editor Ari Henning offers some helpful advice along with a few do’s and don’ts to remember when checking that fit.

For the first time motorcycle helmet buyers I would strongly recommend purchasing helmet at a brick and mortar store. You can take super acurate measurments and follow the sizing charts to the dot but it will not guarantee a best fit. I purchased my first helmet online and had it shipped to my workplace. Excited with my new purchase I tried it on right after signing for the package. Even though I measured and remeasured my head and followed manufacturers sizng chart the helmet was way to tight. It took me five minutes to take the thing off. Luckily nobody saw me because I don't know what I would have said.
BrokenFiddles Lmao
i had a salesman told me to wear a children size helmet (which was way too tight; starting to feel dizzy). the salesman told me (just by looking) that the helmet was still too big but asked me to dent the foam inside the helmet (damage the foam structure) to fit my head... i was like... ah... no, bye...
I used to beat a dents in the foam on my dirt bike helmets all the time. I got a long pointy head. Way back in the boondocks and your head is hurtin. Get desperate. I used a big water bottle todent it in .when I'm buying a high dollar helmet. It is a different story though.
Good pointers! I researched all of this before getting my MC license two years ago, despite having been an avid snowmobiler for 20+ years. Many of the rules are the same, but it had been a long time. It was worth it to do it right! I ordered a helmet (Bell Vortex) in one size, since I was between - but I went up. Too big. Sent it back, and the next size down (L) was better. So I'm glad you mentioned that part!
First off, thanks for the videos dedicated to us newbies, those are a lot of help! If I may, I could give you couple of more ideas for newbie riders, maybe you will find them interesting too:
1. how to park on incline (different scenarios etc)
2. How to climb up your bike on to the side walk (lets say you want to go the shop, and side walk is higher than a road)
3. How to ride on really steep downhills (breaking and turning advice )
Big thanks and great work!
Best channel on RUclips
Thanks for the tip keep up the amazing work have a nice day
straight to the point. thank you
Thank you so much mate great advice 👍🏼
great video, great advice
Great stuff. Actually what i need.
I've had few top end helmets and the one I like most is HJC RPHA-10 (formerly RPS-10 and now it's RPHA-11).... Got my RPS-10 and RPHA-10 for $200 each !
Thank you !
that poster on the wall.. kicks ass since years
Sometimes I watch RUclips videos and wonder how they got any thumbs down marks. This is one of them. Helpful and informative. Who would dislike that?! Lol
My first time experience looking at helmets was like this: *thinks my head is smaller and goes to try M, goes on head somewhat hard, tried to take it off was afraid i would break it.*
So i decided to try L and it was a perfect fit.
Some roll it front to back. Others roll it back to front. But using the D ring and strap to help spread the helmet is on point.
wow ty , i lost weight and was too cheap to invest... bought one on line just now because of this.. down to med
good job
does the full face with a flip up open face as safe as a full face, because had someone said the will come apart in a crash I own a skull cap but like the full face flip up to open face helmets
I have a 58,5 cm head, i tried the agv k1 large and it was comfortable but it feelt that after a while is gonna be loose thats a size 59-60 if am not mistaken, after alot of youtube research i went for medium large that is 58cm, it feels tight. My head doesnt turn red but is tight, also when i do the kissing movement with my lios i can touch the fron if the helmet... dont know if is the right fit.. what do you think?
I am about to the purchase my third lid... thinking arai... (topic for possible video...you give a lot of great info regarding to maintenance or up keep on the bike...what advice would you give to purchasing a used bike??)
Just got a new helmet online, same brand and same size but its way tighter than my old one
For me, the most important feature of helmet is the shape. As I have round shape head, there are not many models that I can choose. Oval shape helmets will put pressure on my forehead and two sides at the top of my head. So, first question I ask is, do you have round shape helmets?
Whoa, wait...I’m still looking for a floppy tape measure.. seriously tho: good advice. Succinct and brutally to the point. I need a new helmet and normally would always try on in the shop but Current COVID restrictions means I’m looking for an internet purchase. I wonder what the “returns” policy is if, once delivered, the helmets not such a good fit. Any advice?
I got a steelbird helmet recently. The size is S (560mm), when i first wore it my ears folded a bit & it's a snug fit. Should i get a M or overtime the inside foam will flatten abit?
My head size is a 59 should I go for a medium fit or large for a hjc i10 helmet?
That 'Don't do it' saved me ordering false size. thank you.
i guess im asking the wrong place but does someone know a way to log back into an Instagram account?
I was dumb forgot my account password. I love any tips you can give me!
@Milo Remington instablaster =)
@Quinn Marc thanks for your reply. I found the site thru google and Im trying it out atm.
I see it takes quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
@Quinn Marc it worked and I now got access to my account again. I'm so happy!
Thanks so much, you saved my ass !
@Milo Remington Glad I could help :)
I gotta question, so my helmet fits good i think but during high speeds now after break in i noticed it touched my nose yesterday. A small though gave me pressure points all over my head
I got a helmet too big for me when I first started riding. It would move around while riding on the freeway...
I have even seen some stupid people who say that your helmet does not match your vehicle color,it doesnt suit your personality or the combination of your helmet and your motorcycle does not suit..like example if u own a royal enfield u should not wear a ls2 helmet with it bcoz they dont match,u should wear only the military type of helmet which does not protect your chin and rest of the face....Nice video bro such an amazing info in such a short time..just loving all your videos...keep up the good job buddy...
There's nothing stupid about having a matching helmet and bike, but a proper fitting helmet should be the priority.
Cooool advice
My skull is long from ear to ear by short on fore to aft. Do major helmet manufacturers make this odd shape helmet? Finding a good fit helmet has been a trouble for me, even with Asian helmet manufacturer.
2 important points you didn't really mention:
1) Padding will settle over time so initial tightness will diminish.
2) Head shape. My helmet fitted great when new but now that the padding has settled a bit I notice it's too round for my head. This leaves too much space on the sides which are a huge source of noise.
If you are getting dizzy because it's'too tight after only 10 minutes it's probably too small. Have you measured the circumference of your head?
Check the helmet: either at the back above the neck if there's something about size printed there or inside behind the liner (sticker on the EPDM foam) for the manufacturer's recommended head circumference for that size. If your head circumference falls outside this range it's probably always going to be too tight.
Additionally, the cheaper the helmet the less shell sizes they make (to save costs) and they make up the sizes using padding. If need be, you could go up a size with only the padding later on. But again, if the small is the largest size for that shell size, it's likely just too small.
A new helmet should fit snugly and slightly uncomfortable (due to the snugness) but it shouldn't hurt (No pressure points anywhere) or cause dizzyness. That's a definite no-no. I suggest taking it back now you still can and do some more fitting. Don't be afraid to walk around a shop with a helmet on your head for 10 - 15 minutes. It's perfectly acceptable.
Additionally, if you ride mostly during the day or the evening I would suggest a helmet without an internal sun visor. They make helmet shells heavier and larger than they need be (and hence louder), aren't very dark and quite flimsy. A tinted visor isn't that expensive and looks cool. The absolute best option IMHO is a photo-chromatic visor, you might want to ask about availability of those for your chosen helmet. It's a visor that turns from clear to dark depending on the amount of sunlight. It's absolutely brilliant. A tad pricy, but you only need one visor ever (and 1 pinlock if you use them).
I hope you find your perfect helmet.
Oh and it's winter. Winter = discount time ;)
Thanks for this input
@@SnoopyDoofy thank you for your insight
Thanks for such a detailed explaination! I got a steelbird helmet recently. The size is S (560mm), when i first wore it my ears folded a bit & it's a snug fit. Should i get a M or overtime the inside foam will flatten abit?
I measured and still gave it an extra 2-3 cm. on the chart it said I was a medium but it's fits tight. I bought a shoei RF900.
buy the replacement foam pad that fit to your head. the problem is not on helmet, but the pad. the most annoying part of buying riding gear is the helmet, sometime we got the right size helmet, not to big and not to heavy, but the pad sometime not fit. I spent 1 hour just to pick helmet for my wife, when I pick S size it too small, when I pick M size it have gap, and I'm stuck for hour just to find the correct foam pad for my wife. and for goodness, try not buy helmet online, you must test feel it in the store before purchase it.
May I get chance to study with u as a motor cycle mechanic ... I have no idea about bike mechanism....
Highly recommend going to a store and trying on multiple helmets. According to HJC online measurements, I should wear an XL. In real life, I have a very oval head, and can't even get an XL onto the top of my head. I had to go to a 5XL to get fit that didn't make "hot spots" on my forehead.
Jim O'Rourke 5XL? You know they make helmets with different head shapes right? I bet if you bought an long oval helmet you'd go down in size.
That size difference is extreme and indicates some shape mismatch. HJC tend to have rounder helmets. LS2 have more long oval that could work better for longer heads shapes.
How tight should a motorcycle helmet strap be? I have an AGV K3 SV, and the buckle seems to stick into my adams apple a little... is that normal?
1. Put helmet on your head
2. Take loose straps, one in each hand
3. Give a good yank down- and forwards
4. Buckle up
It could be possible as well that you are wearing your helmet too tilted forward.
So I can put it on it fits fine.. but taking it off its very tight.. is it too small?
good tips, have just bought myself a Shark Spartan Carbon white, superlight, a bit tight on the cheeks but I've been promised it will wear in quickly, so I'm super excited to get it (probs early next week)
Morten Bakke just brought that helmet . Fit is good but very poor peripheral vision
Sizing charts can be way off. Your best bet is to try on the model locally and see what fits. By measurement I wear a size XL, I can barely get it on my head. The XXL fits like a champ, even though the chart says otherwise. Going smaller can be a mistake, but new riders may not know what is the right amount of pressure to expect orxwant, and walking around with a helmet in a store is just gross, do you want someone else's sweaty helmet?
Is it ok for your chin to poke out a little from the bottom
If you have prescription glasses do you take them off, put the helmet on and than put your glasses back on? Are there any other tips for those of us with glasses
There is no easier or safer way to do it. If you leave them on you risk damage to your glasses and even your eyes.
also modular helmets are way nicer for glasses partly to leave your glasses on but mostly because they generally have more room around the temples so they are usually more comfortable.
thanks
Francois Deshue any suggestions about how you can prevent them to fog? Even with my integral helmet open they fog when i breath :( i just bought it some days ago, and i cant drive without glasses
Francois Deshue i am from but i will try to find that in walmart, or something similar, thanks a lot
My helmet visor's antifog coating is wearing off(flakes) How to safely and completely remove the coating?
The best solution there is to get a new visor!
+Motorcyclist Magazine It's new 3months old, I was planning to wash visor in warm water
I have a scorpion exo 1200 air or somthing. Inside the visor there is another visor, which you can remove "easily" and put it in another visor (like a darkened one). Not sure how it is with other brands tho.
Anyways, the visor isnt expensive :P
I want that arai
I bought NHK helmet and read their size reference. I measured my head and falls at Large size. Now my order arrived and im kinda excited to try it. It fits too tight and kinda like squeezing my head. It gives me headache. i know helmet will loosen up from time to time but this one seems wont loose. I want to keep using it to expand the foan inside but it is giving me headache. :(
Did you end up using it? If yes did it losen overtime?
@@JA-ew5ov I let my wife use it and I use my old nhk helmet. It fita perfectly to her, but for me it's not.
How is the “crow” supposed to fit?
Is there any helmets for super long oval heads? Every helmet I try has my chin sticking out its weird
Or maybe you have a longer chin?
+Jay Antonio maybe
have you tried LS2 arrow?
does hair fall is true with helmate bro
PATTAPU NAGENDRA KUMAR try crashing without one, they will fall out for sure.
I went to a motorcycle shop when I first got my bike. I think the lady that helped fit my helmet. I think it's too big... It moves around easily
why do you need to roll your head in the helmet instead of just sliding it on over the top?
You will avoid hurting your ears. To know the pain, take the palm of your hand press it very firmly against your head just above your ear. Now slide your hand all the way down over your ear. Multiply the discomfort by two.
Ahh thanks! I have a helmet witch is a lil bit loose, but its not dangeours. Never had a problem with that
Apparently my helmets actually a size too small for me yet it makes me look like a bobble head, I just have a big head and tiny torso/shoulders
I see so many riders at events with way loose helmets. Even seen a friend riding with a snowmobile helmet... Cheap bucket for a cheap brain.
if its DOT rated, snowmobile helmet works. They're both tested the same way. Smart man = saves money and gets protection
Natural selection I guess^
@@Supernova12034 you do know that when buying a snowmobile helmet most if not all will say "not for street use".
Fun fact
The same goes for CE ratings.
Dirt bike rated gear is not the same as Street bike rated gear.
Buy the right gear for the activity you are doing.
@@benjaminjwilson6694 DOT only rated helmets are garbage anyway, I'd trust the average dirt helmet rated for MX over DOT.
I only wear ACU Gold helmets on top of the UK required ECE minimum so something certified for track use in tHE UK/any event run under ACU rules.
SNELL isn't a bad rating for the us but it has some issues but it's a good start.

Might need to return my new helmet. Puts pressure on my forehead and cheeks
the cheek pads should break in after a while, they're soft padding. The forehead though, might be that you got a helmet that fits a rounder head than yours, you probably being a more oval head than the helmet is made for. I think the most important part of a helmet that needs to fit properly is the crown "cup", the part that fits your upper skull, the rest can brake in or can be swapped for thinner padding, usually.
Hello . I'm a makeup lover. I love to wear a full face of makeup. I will buy a motorbike (125cc honda sport). It's 2017 so I saw the modular helmets protect the same as a full helmet. Someone help? Do you recommend me a modular helmet?xox
A full face helmet is the most protective. However, a modular helmet is a close second (by modular I assume you mean the full face helmet that you can lift the chin up before putting the helmet on, correct?). I hope you don't mean an open face helmet, I'd never recommend those. So, a good quality modular helmet would be good for you.
my 5x hjc would be more comfortable if I wasn't kissing the mouth guard lol
wow your size is small???
man he's hot
how to put on and take off various types of helmet properly
