    Collection of all the promotional material I managed to find for the first installment in George Lucas' highly divisive prequel trilogy of Star Wars. In regards to my opinion on Phantom Menace, I'm in the camp of "it's bad, but it's got some enjoyable elements and performances". Especially Ewan McGregor as young Obi Wan. One of the best castings in cinema history.

    Love how the first thing is a film version of the trailer. It looks much more authentic than the digitized version. Wish they released a copy of the film like it.

      Sometimes they would release this kind of promotional VHS tapes for various films advertising the merchandise and commercial tie-ins. Jurassic Park also had one exactly like this back in the day.

    As much as I love this movie, I thought it was pretty good. I mean, that's one good opinion. Some people love it, some people hate it.

    I have a soft spot for this film. It was my first theatrical experience with Star Wars, specifically the 3D re-release in 2011, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. In fact, I plan on seeing the theatrical re-release this year too.

  • @BetamaxKing
    @BetamaxKing 10 месяцев назад +8

    Thanks for the mention.
    I might as well weigh in...
    Phantom Menace really isn't all that bad. I didn't bother to go see it in theatres when it released mainly because promotional material relied a little too heavily on characters like Jar Jar Binks which didnt sell it to me in a positive light. (One of the Harry Potter films did this as well, relying a little too heavily on moaning myrtle in one of the commercials) I opted to rent it on home video afterward and actually enjoyed it for what it was; another adventure in the Star Wars universe.
    There are a lot of people who hate this film but many of them are just parroting something that they've read someplace. I always use the pineapple on pizza example, people hate pineapple and pizza because the internet told them to, there's nothing actually wrong with pineapple and pizza either.
    "But the dialog is awful"... All Star Wars dialogue is awful, thats half the campy fun.
    "It doesn't tell a story"... Its not supposed to, its introducing a story already told with a bit of preface.
    "The writing sucks"... Every single film out there with the exception of maybe the Godfather trilogy could stand a writing improvement in some aspect. The issue with entities like Star Wars is that people are die-hard fans and they all feel that something should be done better because of how they envision it themselves. This is actually a fine example of this, even the original creator wasn't capable of satisfying that level of fandom. The reality is a thousand different versions of this film who wouldn't satisfy everybody And that's just the nature of Star Wars fandom.
    Food for thought anyway.

      Yo, was not expecting to see you here! I've started to credit my promo sources here on RUclips because I was feeling bad about how, from a certain point of view (no pun intended), it seemed like I was stealing the promos you and the other users had found to compile into these compilations, so that's something I wanted to correct so at least people know where they came from.
      As for your thoughts on Phantom Menace, I both agree and disagree. There are definitely hyperbolic extremisms when it comes to either loving or hating this movie (and the following prequels) and I roll my eyes at both. I don't like this movie, but definitely not to the level of disdain a lot of other Star Wars fans have. Heck, I genuinely hate the vitriol Ahmed Best and Jake Lloyd received for their performances to the point that it nearly ruined their lives (last I heard, Jake was diagnosed with schizophrenia which makes me feel for him). But I do believe there are fair constructive criticisms one can have with this movie that doesn't revolve around the same tired shit.
      All that being said, I still unashamedly adore Revenge Of The Sith and I will never stop.

    This year, they’re going to rerelease the phantom menace as a 25th anniversary of 1999 release. Anyway, I do remember watching the 3D version of the same movie back in 2012.

    • @mhoroky
      @mhoroky 5 месяцев назад

      The movie did NOT live up to the hype. I was a kid when the ORIGINAL TRILOGY was released. The trailers and hype for Empire and Jedi was so much better and the movies so much more rewarding. If only you Millennials were able to experience it back then, you would look at the Prequels the way the rest of us do.

    Man the level of hate here shows that people
    1. Dont understand Georges vision of Star Wars
    2. Are already hateful miserable people
    At least keep that stuff to yourself don't come on here attempting to make objective statements about something that is subjective

    Why are people pretending this movie is good? People hated it at first now they love it. Is it cus nostalgia has blinded them? I think revenge is in the top 3 best star wars movies easy but this one just sucks.

    • @Jurassic1993Park

      Because people have a difference of opinion?
      I'm on the same boat here, I don't like Phantom Menace, but if other people like it, I don't have any issue with it. That's why subjectivity is a thing.

    I’m sorry to say this, but I actually hate this movie. I know everyone likes this movie and the rest of the prequels, as they have gotten a following over the years. But, I’m sorry, with Jar Jar Binks, talk of politics, and tons of other stuff that makes this movie bad, I can’t ignore. I know this is an unpopular opinion, and everyone will hate me for this, but I really don’t like The Phantom Menace.

    • @Jurassic1993Park
      @Jurassic1993Park  10 месяцев назад +7

      That's not an unpopular opinion though. That was pretty much 95% of people's reactions once they walked out of the theater, The Phantom Menace was dowright obliterated by fans and critics. Unfortunately, it also revealed a toxic side of the fandom when unnecessary vitriol came towards Ahmed Best and Jake Lloyd's way.
      As for me, I don't like this movie either, but I also can't exactly say that it's deprived of any good aspect. For instance, like I said in the description, there's a reason Ewan McGregor is still revered today as Obi Wan, plus some of the concepts presented in this film (the Jedi order, Anakin's origin, Palpatine's corrupting influence) are good on paper.

      I’m glad someone else thinks this. Even though I don’t hate the phantom menace it’s got too many problems for me to say I like it. The only Star Wars movie I come close to hating is attack of the clones, there’s almost nothing I like in that one. And revenge of the Sith is pretty good, but still has too many problems for me to say I really like it, it’s definitely become overrated in my opinion

      It’s not an unpopular opinion, people nowadays are trying to convince you otherwise that it’s a good movie but they are blinded by nostalgia. Hell I’m blinded by nostalgia, the sequels were the ones I grew up with and I love The Force Awakens, but I do hate TROS.
